Our group of four came by for Restaurant Week, and it was such a great experience! It was probably one of the best SRW meals that I've had these past few years. Not only was the food delicious, the portions were HUGE, and definitely worth the $30 plus tax/tip. First of all, Red Cow is located in an adorable unassuming neighborhood of Madrona. It reminded me a lot of Portland or the Wallingford area because I had never ventured out there before. The decor was reminiscent of the usual Ethan Stowell atmosphere; open kitchen and concrete walls. Our hostess and server were both helpful and great. We ordered the foie gras to share, and that was very rich and creamy. They gave us more toast too which was nice. I started with the frisee salad with bacon and an egg; that was so good. Loved the freshness as well as the bacon. The chicken was my favorite though. There were two pieces of I think a leg and a breast. Super tender and moist. The potatoes were perfectly cooked and the kale added a nice seasoned crunch to the bite. Needless to say, I ate it all. The profiteroles were my dessert of choice; thinking they were some sort of cream puff. There were TWO of them. Oh my... I was pretty much full at that point, but the first bite was SO good. The taste of the coffee ice cream was pretty nostalgic; having had that a lot growing up in Hawaii. The puff pastry or whatever it was sandwiched by was tasty as well. Ugh, I ate them both, I'm so bad. But on the other hand, my friend who got the steak said it tasted normal, nothing special... but the frites were amazing. Went in for the first-time last weekend, very underwhelmed and unlikely to go back. I appreciate that coming out of the pandemic has made it tough for restaurants to deliver their usual service levels, but I expected much more. So far as I could see the restaurant was full, so if you're down on staff numbers, maybe don't accept so many reservations? We arrived at the time of our reservation, to be told that they were running behind and we'd have to wait - that meant standing outside on a cold February evening for 20-30 mins. Once seated we got starters and drinks straight away. Drinks were good, and reasonably priced. Starters were a bit meh - nothing special. Main courses took over an hour to arrive. As others have mentioned here, the Fries were excellent, steaks however were pretty ordinary, and in a steak restaurant, charging moderately high prices, that's just not good enough. If I'd gone to the Outback or someplace like that, I'd have been pleased enough with the food and service. Paying $100+ per person to be cold, irritated, and served food that I could have made myself, well it simply wasn't worth the effort of the evening. Overall - an annoying wait in the cold, followed by an annoying wait inside to get expensive moderate food. Dined here at Red Cow November 2018 during impromptu Thanksgiving trip to Seattle. The restaurant was simply decorated, nice atmosphere for dinner. Staff was attentive and friendly. Ordered mMarinated olives, mesclun greens, chicken liver mousse, Parisian gnocchi, moules frites (mussels), and steak frites. The cherry compote was the perfect pairing for the chicken liver mousse. Fresh mussels dish was delicious we ordered another. The steak (forgot which cut) was big and perfectly cooked. Since we were full, we shared the profiterols (gingerbread cream puffs) with pumpkin fillings. They did not look that pretty in picture, and the flavor was strange. Very disappointed and not what we expected. The service was less than average (attitude with tone and eye rolling), there is no atmosphere and the food is very overpriced for the quality. We were expecting a charming French bistro with a neighbor feel - with great food for a family dinner. The appetizer were all good, but the overwhelming number of fries really downgraded the fact that you were paying $60+ for the steak. Yes, you can replace the fries with a salad for $3 more. My bf and I have been meaning to try Red Cow for a while now and despite always going to Bottlehouse (which we love), we never have been able to get a seat at the Red Cow until SRW. We made reservations way ahead of time (like 3 weeks ahead) and grabbed an indoor spot on a Friday night. Parking isn't too bad, lots of street parking in the areas out back and on a nice night, it's very walkable and the area is friendly. The menu is still quite limited (probably given that Seattle is just opening up again) but that's okay, because we went for the SRW menu! For $35, we got a our choice of apps and entree. For apps, I got the terrine and and my bf got the cheese platter. And for mains, I got the steak and frites and he got the burger. And then the same lemon tart for dessert. For $35, it's well worth the bargain, lots of food and you don't leave hungry. I actually took the frites to go because it was quite a good portion (I wouldn't say large portion because my bf devoured his meal easily). The terrine was my fav - lots of fatty chunks and great portion for an appetizer. For the cheese platter, I think there's a great assortment, but presentation is probably lacking (but nothing to lose points over). We even got several cocktails to try and although pricey, all DELICIOUS and highly recommended. Steak and burger were well cooked, but I wouldn't say it's anything better than I can make at home. It was a lovely cut of meat though. Lemon tart was just okay... I didn't love the crust, it was quite hard. Service was excellent. I think our waiter was very attentive and always came by to ask us how we were. The only disappointment was that we noticed they gave our food to the next table over... lol. And that table actually took it and ate it (or already eating it) before our waiter came by and apologized... and kind of told the lady who gave them the food that it was the wrong table. Subsequently, we got our food delayed and late. Nevertheless, it was fine and they didn't take the food back and serve us half-eaten food. Overall, I thought it was great and I'd definitely come back to revisit. Prices are typically quite high so maybe a happy hour visit is better. Overcooked and tasteless hamburger with an outsized, dry inedible bun. $25 I substituted a basic lettuce salad, all lettuce and nothing else, for the frites, charged $3. The final bill arrives and an extra 4.5% charge on entire bill, including wine and cocktails, for procuring food. Does not go to staff, procuring food items! Surprised no one else on Yelp has complained about this. We have eaten at this restaurant before but it has been awhile. The food used to be good. My review is specific to the rockfish special - the rest of my family had steak and enjoyed it. The rockfish was tough, a very odd texture, and didn't taste good. Totally not impressed from start to finish. The host guy was completely rude from the get-go. When we arrived there was a problem with our reservation and they couldn't find it. So we asked if he had room for us, and mentioned it wasn't a big deal if not. He acted completely put out though, but did seat us. We settled in and he came back about 10 minutes later and wanted me to check my email to prove I made a reservation. I was caught off guard by this, and said, I'm not blaming you for this, these things happen, and admitted maybe I did it wrong. He looked more put out, so I asked him if he needed us to leave. Luckily our interactions with him after that were limited. The waitress was nice enough. We both ordered burgers. My friend asked for rare and no pepper. I asked for medium rare and no tomato. She received a well done burger and mine was mooing. We would have traded but mine had pepper. The burgers were actually pretty tasteless as well. The garlic fries were decent though. Great HH menu! Fantastic salad (a must with all the heavy, salty proteins available) and beef tartare. The burger was tasty, but the brioche bun wasn't hearty enough to support it. We ordered the coulotte medium, and it was perfectly cooked and seasoned. We also ordered the sauce sampler and figured out that the horseradish cream is the way to go because it provides some lightness, similarly to the salad's vinaigrette. Frites were excellent. Decided to take my parent's to Red Cow for their last dinner in Seattle after a LOT of research on what would make the best lasting impression. Easily made reservations on OpenTable, and found street parking relatively easy that night around the corner. The host seated us immediately at a cozy corner table. He got us some glasses of water and informed us of the 20% gratuity they automatically add to your bill, which is what I normally tip, so it didn't matter to us. Our waitress was honestly a little bit below par for us. She was slow. The host actually ended up coming to our table to explain the menu to us and to take our orders. At the end of the meal, another waitress came by and collected our bill for us. She was nice enough, but for some reason just distracted? My dad ordered a Coke which was flat. You couldn't see any bubbles that are normally rising to the top of the glass when you first pour a soda into a glass of ice. We informed the host, who told us that was so weird and that they pour it from a can they pop open. We got another one, but it was also flat. They were shocked that it was flat, but they could have tried it themselves to see how flat it was. At that point, we didn't say anything else again, because they seemed pretty adamant that it was a fresh can. Just a little surprised something as simple as a good soda was hard for them. I got one of the ciders from the menu, and it was amazing. A little dry, perfectly bubbly, and just the right amount of sweet. We got the bone marrow to start. I ordered the hanger steak (with fries), my dad got the filet mignon, and my mom got the mussels. The bone marrow was so well cooked. The bread was already dipped in olive oil (?) and pretty oily. But man it was good. The bone marrow was so tasty, my mom was scrapping it til the very last second. The hanger steak was a little tough, but that's also probably because it's the hanger steak and that particular cut of meat isn't the softest. It was still really tasty. You get to choose your own steak sauce, and I chose the red win reduction. So tasty and full of flavor. It gave the steak an extra boost. The fries are cooked perfectly, great texture. The garlic aioli it came with was delicious. The temperatures of our steak were spot on as well. Here's what boosted this place up to 4 stars for me: the dessert. We decided to split the pecan praline mousse and the seasonal sorbet, which was a pear coriander. It blew me away. The mousse was SO amazing, light and silky smooth like it should be. The pecan praline flavor was so prominent as well, I loved it. It came with chopped up pears in it, which only added to the flavor and cut down some of the richness. The moment we tried the sorbet, all you could hear at our tables were "wow...." it was sweet, yet tart/tangy. Amazing. Overall, we had a pretty enjoyable experience. Let me start by saying I love French food and Ethan Stowell. I also look forward to Restaurant Week to try places I haven't had time to try. Red Cow has been on my list for a long time. Unfortunately my experience was traumatic. When I sat at the table, Mason the waiter was making a joke while grabbing my upper arm. As a much younger woman, this was very off putting in general but especially during a pandemic. For the starters we ordered the Pork Pâté, which was overly salted and the Bread with Olives which had an overly sweet butter. Neither of these were terrible so we ate most of these plates. Then came our Entrees. My friend ordered his steak well done, but it came out so undercooked it was purple. At no point were we asked how the course was, so I had to flag down a busser to ask for it to be cooked further. I had order the burger as it is one of my favorite foods. It lacked any flavor. In comparison the side of fries had an overpowering rosemary taste. When the waiter came to clear and saw I'd only had two bites, he said "Can I get you a box?". I said "No Thank you". He curtly responded "you sure you don't want a box?". I confirmed "yes I am sure thank you" but was annoyed by the apparent judgment. Next came the dessert. We love profiteroles so we both ordered them! Unfortunately, one bite in and the ice cream was icy in the way freezer burned ice cream is. The puff pastry itself was chewy instead of the usual fluffy or flaky you'd expect. Neither of us ever bothered to touch our second profiteroles. When Mason checked on us we asked for the check and he cleared my plate. He then came back and said "I have to ask, was there something wrong with your meal?" I said "to be honest the burger was lacking in flavor and the ice cream was icy in a freezer burned way". His response was "Well no one else has complained. It's not like I can change your bill." I replied "You asked me and I am not going to lie to you. If you didn't want to know you shouldn't have asked. I came here knowing I was paying $50 and I did not ask you to change it". He then just left. No apology. No I hope we can do better next time. I have never been berated for an opinion I was ASKED for. I cannot believe how on top of paying premium for poor quality food I had to be treated rudely by a waiter that does not respect personal space. Insult to injury is an understatement. read more

What a fun little adventure for SRW! Made a reservation and promptly seated. We all ordered off the SRW menu (not certain if that was a requirement or not, but it's what we all wanted). Drinks were good. Service was excellent. Appetizer course was 5 items served family style for sharing. It included: Lamb Terrine - similar to a pate served with mustard, cornichon, and crostini. Personally not a fan, but my 2 dining mates loved it. Brandade - I had to look this one up but it's a cod and potato mixture with gruyere cheese and lemon. Tasty!! Baby Lettuces - with pear, blue cheese, and walnut vinaigrette. Really good. Winter Squash Soup - with fried sage and olive oil. Serve in little tea cups. Warm, wintery goodness. Fromage Frais - a very soft cheese with lemon, apple, crostini. To me it resembled a mild ricotta. Really good to me, but least favorite amongst my dining companions. For Mains: I had Sole in an herb brown butter with haricot verts and fingerlings. Good, not great. My friends decided to upgrade and shared a 16 oz Rib-eye for two including horseradish cream and red wine reduction served with pommes frites and aioli. Well cooked and delicious. We ordered all the desserts: Profiteroles, Pear Chiboust, and Blueberry-Tarragon Sorbet. The were good, but geez that tarragon sorbet was QUITE strong. Tone it down just a smidge. A French brasserie in one of my favorite neighborhoods in Seattle (Madrona)? Heck yeah! To top it off, Red Cow is an Ethan Stowell establishment, so you know it's gonna be good. We came here 15 minutes after happy hour started and already, the patio was nearly full. Fortunately, we took the last table, especially since we had our dog with us, which they allow on the patio. (Sooo another good reason to check out Red Cow!) The happy hour menu is solid, as it offers classic brasserie items, along with affordable boozy drinks, like $6 wines and a $7 cocktail of the day. We ordered the happy hour burger, moules, frites and wine. But really, you can't go wrong with any of the items here. Food comes out as its ready. Seriously, I loved it all. The burger on happy hour is only $10, and it was naturally juicy with a medium-rare cook on an eight-ounce, high-quality beef patty. It was served on a Columbia City Bakery potato bun with white cheddar, caramelized onions, tomato and a spicy aioli. It's simple but has some kick to it. The beef is what makes it memorable, as it should be. For any burger lovers, I recommend trying this one. The moules were also fantastic, as we chose to get it in the white wine broth, which was superb! I loved the hints of lemon and rosemary flavor in the broth and the moules were large and succulent. It's a great dish to share, and you'll want to especially soak up the broth with the side of bread you get with. OR, try it with the frites! The frites, which were perfectly fried, came with a housemade aioli; yet, I found myself wanting to dip them in the broth from the moules. Nom nom nom. It's one of my favorite happy hours in town, especially when dining and drinking al fresco. Though the brasserie itself is small in size, it's charming and has a casual, French vibe, with an exterior that fits with the neighborhood of craftsman homes in Madrona. Red Cow has shifted toward takeout beautifully during the pandemic. Their meals for two - the steak frites and hamburgers - are a value for the gourmet quality. And the fries! So good. Everything still comes out cooked perfectly, and it's been a step-up take-out treat during the quarantine. I also ate outside twice in the fall as dining was reopening and felt very safe. I have been to Red Cow twice now and enjoyed my visit both times very much. It is a quaint little restaurant with really good menu options, perfect for dinner with close friends or date night. The first time I went with some friends and we tried a bunch of their offerings and had a wonderful time and recently I went back with my boyfriend on one of our date nights. Food: 5 stars Housemade Charcuterie & Cheese - we tried a variety and everything was great. The chicken liver mousse stood out to me most and was very tasty. Frisée & Bacon Salad - this was one of my favorite salads I've ever had, the poached egg on top makes it to die for! Roasted Marrow Bones - takes a little extra time to prepare, but definitely worth the extra wait, rich and full of flavor. Tuna Tartine - on top of perfectly crisp baguette, the tuna tasted light and very fresh. This dish left me wanting more! Steak Frites - ordered the Ribeye and it did not disappoint, incredibly tender and juicy and the accompanying sauces available were all SO good! I especially liked the red wine reduction. Carrots & Fennel - candied carrots perfectly seasoned and cooked, I really enjoyed this veggie side This is definitely one of my favorite restaurants in Seattle. We came here for the first time last night and didn't realize it was restaurant week! It was actually really busy, I made a reservation for 8:30pm but called around 7:30 to get seated earlier. The hostess was so awesome and texted me when a table was available which was right before 8pm! Excellent service!! We had the restaurant week menu which started with 5 sampler appetizers. Yummy and we finished it all! The pate was good with mustard and the bread. I had the gnocchi and my husband had the rainbow trout. Then the lemon meringue bar and sorbet for dessert! Total came to $150 with tip and a bottle of wine. Overall great service and food tasted delicious! We plan to go back since we live so close. It's a hidden gem! The cocktails were good. All of the food were too salty. Many dishes like steak tartar, frisée salad, and mussels were too sour. I normally love salty and sour food. The mussel didn't taste fresh, we were concerned about getting sick from it. Based on the food alone, we don't plan to return. What's worse is the 4% surcharged which 100% goes to the restaurant, and not the staff. Seriously?! The restaurant already raised prices over the past year, so they could just incorporate into their pricing. The New York strip we ordered is $66, so not cheap. Better appetizers than steaks! We ordered four apps and they are all very yummy - then bone marrow is my fav. It is hot, fatty and messy but so so good! The chucks of bone marrow is much more than the typical kind you get. The steak tartar portion was big too! I do wish it had a more mustard kick to it. My husband got the filet and I had the burger. Both turned out the be a bit salty than needed. We both asked for medium rare and even clarified with the waiter that we want it on the rare side - but we both got pretty medium cooked steak/burger. It's the second day since they opened. I'm optimistic about Red Cow because they offer solid French-esque food items sans the uptight "oui oui" blowhards and obnoxious mustaches that come with French cuisine. You know, the mustaches that look like they have a dried turd permanently affixed to their upper lip. Red Cow is simultaneously casual and uninviting resembling an unfinished civil engineering project started by a moody, color blind 16-year-old. It's dark, weird, and screams itchy scarf and second-hand Chuck Taylors. I'm very particular about dressing for the occasion and for Red Cow, I would forego any variant of a thong. No sane woman likes persistent wedgies unless they're planning to get laid, which is not happening here. Aside from the conversation I had the misfortune of hearing at the table next to me where it leads me to believe the most exciting thing these women have done in their lives is tweeze their armpits, everything else seemed to be on par with Ethan Stowell standards. His menus are always reasonably priced while offering a generous serving of food. We ordered the New York Strip with the horseradish sauce, the Roasted Half Chicken with kale and potatoes, and the Beef Tartare. The New York Strip was just average but I've never found any slice of steak amazing. It's just fucking steak. Who is ever like, oh, honey, that overly chewy back of a cow that's 15 oz more than I should ever eat in one sitting and served off a flat-top unseasoned and unmarinated was AMAZING! Absolutely exquisite! Put a Zagat sticker on it! The best out of those three was the chicken because I was enthusiastic about every bite. They give you half a breast and a thigh that are both succulent, tender, and is roasted at a high enough temperature to get a nice crisp on the skin. I consider it a winner when paired it with nicely baked and crispy Yukon potatoes and baby kale. A good choice for any dining companion, even those who fall in the category of ironed granny panties vanilla wafer. The Beef Tartare feels more like something that was added on after-the-fact to appease all of the insufferable, whiny food crusaders. I enjoyed it but it didn't set off any fire alarms. The beef is mixed with dijon mustard, dill, onions, and enough miscellaneous crap that destroys the integrity of raw beef. I'll come back again because nothing about this place turned me off and it's a good place to hang. I suggest the seared scallops even though I've never had them but I saw another person eat them and they looked delicious. That's what I'm having next time. read more

BonJourno! When Red Cow first opened I was going here back to back on for Charcuterie, Ribeye and Frites. In the fall before it opened, I was highly anticipating Chippys, Noyer, and Red Cow to open in 2014. I love the casual atmosphere, the location isn't infested with a bunch of traffic, and it's a pretty good spot to grab Steak n Fries. Food: Charcuterie- My favs were the Chicken Liver Mousse very Smooth and almost like a Savory Dessert, Foie Gras was very Creamy and Rich in Flavor, Beef Tartare good but didn't like some of the ingredients like the mustard, and Pâté de Campagne was moist and pretty tasty. Ribeye- I am a huge Ribeye Fanatic and there is nothing I like more than a big fat juicy Ribeye. The Ribeye here has been Sous Vide before they cook it. This makes the Ribeye pretty tender and almost like a Prime Rib to eat. The Sauces are pretty good too! I always get the Bearnaise Sauce and the Butta! Frites & Aioli- I like the sizes that the Fries are cut up to not too thin yet not too thick, Crispy, they give you a good size portion so that you can pick out the Eye Candies and not waste your Stomach Space on the less desirable ones, and what goes better with Frites than Mayo! Within a week of Red Cow opening the buzz around it had me dying to go. I finally someone to dine with me three weeks after it opened. I made a Wednesday reservation Monday afternoon and the only available spots were 6pm, 8:15pm and later. I snagged the 6pm slot. We got caught in traffic and when I called to push my reservation back to 6:30, the lady was hesitant but said they could accommodate. The place was quite full for a Wednesday night, so I totally understood where she was coming from. Point is, they are popular. Make a reservation. We started off with a glass of red wine and three of their Housemade Charcuterie, Pâté de Campagne, Beef Cheek Terrine, and the Pork Rillettes. For $18, the portions were bigger than you would expect. Perfect starter for two people. They were also very delicious! Our favorite was the Pâté with the Prok Rillettes coming in a close 2nd. The charcuterie came with dashes of sauce on the side, pickled vegetables, and crostini. We both ended up getting the New York Strip. We asked the waiter for sauce recommendations for the New York Strip. He told us that the Béarnaise and Red Wine Reduction are the best for the cut. I ordered it medium rare more on the rare side with the Béarnaise sauce. The lightly seasoned steak came out perfectly cooked and the sauce paired great. My friend ordered his medium with the red wine reduction, which was also an amazing sauce pairing. If you like your steak cooked medium, they do it well here. But even my friend had to agree medium rare is the way to go with Red Cow's New York Strip! The frites had a yummy crispy outing and soft in the middle. They had a very rustic fresh out of the fryer potato taste. It was served with a side of aoli. It tasted like straight mayonnaise, but since that is my preferred dipping sauce, i wasn't complaining. I am just glad I didn't have to be the weirdo asking for a side of mayo this time! Neither of us were able to finish our dinners so we boxed the rest to go and skipped dessert. All in all the service was friendly, the ambiance was enjoyable, and the food was top notch. The place is small so it was pretty noisy. Can't wait to try their other hosemade charcuteries and possibly a different cut of steak! read more

Oh Ethan how you tempt me with the promise of steak. In his newest restaurant in his ever expanding empire Ethan Stowell promises nothing but steak and fries but that wasn't even close to the best part of the meal. Red cow is a very cute new place out in Madrona. I admit this was my first time in this neighborhood and it reminded me of a much more upscale Wallingford. The tiny restaurant is very sparsely decorated with high booths, and lots of exposed concrete. This leads to a noisy and bright dining experience. But it does give the place some fun character, however I wouldn't object if they threw some texture on the wall to quiet things down. The service is wonderful. Everyone was extremely attentive, quick, and charming. The hostess was polite even when we tried to sneak into the bar before our reservation. The only thing that was wrong with my evening was the bartender forgot my brandied cherry in my Black Manhattan... I know those things cost like 50 cents apiece and they are delicious! So that made me a little sad. Speaking of the Black Manhattan it was delicious, replacing the traditional vermouth with Averna gave the drink a herbal bitterness that toned down the overt sweetness Manhattans can have. We started our night with 3 samples from their charcuterie menu at $18. The portions were beyond generous! I honestly thought he brought us a double order and was going to charge us $36! Beef Cheek Terrine: Tender (Duh). The horseradish cream gives it some nice spice, which is good because in the quantity they serve it could get bland fast. Foie Gras: Unbelievable. Competes for the best I've ever had in Seattle (that's right Tavern Law). So complex. I tested wicked sweet hints of blackberries and honey. Creamy, yet dense. A absolute must try. Pork Rillette: AVOID at all costs. It was bland, even the fat on top was flavorless. It had a texture of pureed and thickened tuna. Nowhere near what I'd expect for this place. Ribeye (with Compound Butter) and Frites: Holy hell. This thing was huge. I'd say their 16oz estimate was silly low. The butter had a citrus component I wasn't ecstatic about and I felt it lacked salt. But I always feel that way. The ribeye was perfect medium rare, nearly fork tender. The meat had properly rested when I got it so it didn't leak all over my plate. The fries were great. I was hoping for them to be transcendent but that's on me and my lofty expectations. I will say the aioli they came with may very well be the best thing I've ever dipped fries into. Seriously it was fricken amazing. If I could do it again I'd stop by for the Charcuterie and fries and ailoi. Down a cocktail and maybe try the burger.
