    Nashville Hot Chicken
    Jennifer C.

Visited this Food Truck while at 9 Mile Garden. The Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich and Pork with Pimento Eggrolls had me intrigued. The sandwich comes with fries and is huge! Flavor was good, not overly hot, however the breading does fall apart a bit while eating. I found it to be a bit messy, so grab extra napkins. A cool ranch for dipping would set this sandwich off, but they didn't have any. The pork and pimento eggrolls were different in flavor profile but enjoyable. The pork was cooked nicely and the eggrolls were very rich because of the pimento. The dipping sauce was just OK as it was a bit too tart for my taste.

Nutshell: Great service, amazing fries (for those in the back, AMAZING), but needs some work on their flavor profile. I hit up the truck at the 9 Mile on a Friday evening and was really hankering for something spicy. I was really excited to see they had a Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich with fries. I ordered and stepped aside. I only had to wait maybe 5 minutes...even though there was a consistent line of folks on this particular evening. Service was friendly. I decided to take my spoils home, because I don't care for people. I started with a few fries. My Oh My! They are hands down in my top 3 for fries. They appear hand cut, chunky, cooked to perfection, and seasoning straight out of heaven. Where it fell apart was the chicken. It's a huge breast and was juicy, but there was just no flavor and no heat. I've had Hot Chicken both here and in Nashville and it's got to be flavorful and spicy, but I've had regular fried chicken from a VFW with more flavor. The slaw that comes on the sandwich likewise didn't taste like much. It bordered between creamy and vinegar slaw, but seemed to not know which it wanted to be. The pickles were good though. I'd take a jar of those. I'm not writing off Red Dirt just yet, because I know they are brand spanking new. I would however request they revise their seasoning profile and get a creamier slaw. My total was under $15, which for the amount of food was perfectly fine with me.

Food was phenomenal! Had the smash burger and fries! Fries taste fresh and delicious! And that burger... the "come back sauce" is genius. Customer service was fast but friendly!

Of course the inside is beautiful and spacious. The service was really amazing from my good friends that work there Bri and Jay!! Drinks: *The Cornbread Sermon - My favorite- definitely unique in a sense that actual cornbread was used in Woodford reserve. *Bayou Breeze - this was a NA drink. Floral forward. The thyme and elderflower you can really taste. Food: *Crab Beignets - AMAZING!! I wanted more than 3. Had a nice crunchy crust but soft on the inside. The lemon aioli was really good as well with it. *Lucy Q Big Plate - great way to experience trying all the meats they other. Only complaint was that the brisket was a bit dry. This also come with two sides which had that Mac n cheese and greens. The Mac was cooked right and very cheesy but to me it needed salt and pepper. The greens were really good. Dessert: *Salted Bourbon Caramel Cheesecake - ABSOLUTELY AMAZING - I wanted not a slice but the whole cheesecake! The cheesecake itself was soft and decadent but that salted bourbon caramel drizzle tasted really good. *Caramelized Banana Pudding Cake - this was a good dessert too. Very dense so I know I couldn't eat all of it but definitely tasted really good!!

Shout out immediately to the Drinks Menu which is very creative, tasty and with a kick! We started with the Bread service and Caesar Salad. The menu advises that the dressing is anchovie base and that drew me in but it was light to non existent, still a decent salad though. Next the Gnocchi was Soo rich and creamy and I would definitely order this again, it is reminiscent of Mac n Cheese but elevated. Onto the Crawfish Pie, was not really sure what to expect but it delivered! Handheld flaky crust pie packed with crawfish stuffing and served with a sort of stewed tomatoes on the side. The stewed tomatoes were definitely something I would not have ever selected but nice. Service was very attentive!! The menu is Southern eclectic bordering Tapas which I enjoyed.

The line wasn't too long, but I did notice it's set up a little differently than I remember. They now use more of the building, so the line runs down the hallway and loops into the restaurant, with two ordering counters available. While you're waiting, they have menus to look at and even a QR code if you'd rather pull it up on your phone. We ended up waiting about 10 minutes before ordering. Once we got to the counter, everything moved quickly. The staff member helped us right away and let us know they'd bring the food out to our table, which I was glad hasn't changed. One thing I did notice is that the original ordering/dining area is no longer open for seating, it looks like it's now used for staff and possibly catering/to-go orders. They have their drink station available for self-service and offer sodas and sweet and unsweet tea options as well as water. Luckily, there's still plenty of seating in the newer dining area, plus a good number of outdoor tables if you want to sit at a picnic table and enjoy the weather. Within a few minutes, we heard our names called and our food came out fast. And honestly, it was just as good as ever. I was especially happy with the sweet potato fries, and even though applesauce isn't anything fancy, it's kind of the perfect side for me at Pappy's. I ended up eating about half of my meal and boxing the rest up for dinner later, which is always a win. Overall, such a great spot, and I'm really glad it's so close to work. Definitely still a fan and will keep going back.

My research brought me here to Pappy's. I'm very glad it did. Ambiance starts with a line out the door, literally. You slowly shuffle down a long hallway full of Pappy's memorabilia. Then you make it to the ordering counter, order, and find a table. The dining room is huge, plenty of tables, with a full complement of sauces on each table. The service people at the counter were friendly, and so were the people delivering the food. The food came out quick and hot and delicious. We had baked beans and potato salad for sides, and they were pretty solid. Nothing show-stealing, but no complaints about them whatsoever. And of course, we got the ribs. Tender, juicy, a nice bite and chew, a decent bark, just a really wonderful rib. Better than any St. Louis style rib I've ever had back home in Florida. Other states, hard to say, the jury's out, but in that moment, I was eating a five-star rib. So good. We also got a 1/4 pound of the Burnt Ends. Usually, burnt ends are the king of meats, but I think we've entered the phase of America, where they're just another variety of meat and not necessarily upper echelon anymore. That being said, these were pretty ok. Should have gotten more ribs. Overall, Pappy's was pretty wow. Great local spot with a lot of pride and history, excellent ribs, I will definitely try to come back next time I'm in town.

Advertisements online talked about "rolling out the red carpet" for mom, including receiving a glass of champagne, a hand-selected personal gift from the team, and a special Art Deco Goddess coloring sheet for the kids. However, our Mother's Day experience was not special at all. I went with my husband, 2 young kids, and my mother. When the waitress greeted us, she wasn't very friendly and didn't even say Happy Mother's Day when there was 2 mothers at the table. She didn't mention anything about the free champagne...we had to ask for it. We did not receive a hand-selected personal gift. There was also no special coloring sheet for the kids - we were just coloring on the kids menu. Nothing about our experience was special. Next year, I will pick somewhere else to go for Mother's Day. I felt more like a burden here than someone to be celebrated. The food was still decent. I got the pesto chicken sandwich with the bird seed salad. The bird seed salad was the star. Loved the poppyseed vinaigrette dressing and the bruleed apple slice (never seen that before - how unique and cool!). The pesto sandwich was a bit difficult to eat - while the chicken was moist, the bread was very crusty and dry which made the overall sandwich very dry. It was kinda hard to get through. I ended up taking it home and reheating it in the microwave and it was a little better after doing that because it allowed the pesto to soak into the bread and moisten it up a bit. I ordered a scoop of Zanzibar chocolate ice cream with hot fudge and this was truly amazing. The kids menu could definitely use some work - seems more like an after thought. It isn't even posted online to view in advance. I can't remember all the choices, but it was limited. I remember 2 different peanut butter sandwiches available, Mac and cheese, and a "pizza" on focaccia type bread. I put pizza in quotes because most kids I know are picky and this isn't a traditional pizza so we couldn't order this because our kids probably wouldnt eat it especially if the bread on the pizza was as dry and crusty as it was on my pesto sandwich. We ended up ordering the Mac and cheese, which was actually really good and the kids liked it. Just wish there were more options. What was really disappointing though is they served apple slices on the plate with the core still in it...serving apple core to a child is a safety hazard and just plain lazy.

The owners are very approachable and could immediately recognize us as Filipinos when we were sitting and eating there. The restaurant reminds me of a "fancier" Filipino style like you see in big tourist spots in Boracay. I do admit, the wait is a bit long as we were waiting for almost 30 minutes for our food to arrive. However, I feel like the complaints about it from other reviews are ridiculous since this place isn't considered fast food, but cooked with love. I mean- when I was living in The Philippines, everyone has patience of a saint, especially when it comes to food so I do not see the wait time as an issue. It's not served immediately like karinderya style. I ordered the Filipino-style chicken BBQ and I'd like to say that it's so delicious and flavorful. However, it doesn't remind me of home. I do want to point out to definitely ask for tuyo kalamansi with chili for the dip if you're not a fan of vinegar. I was told it was homemade by the owner and it did not disappoint. The pork BBQ that my father ordered was a bit too hard for his liking, as Filipino meat tends to be on the softer side. The ube banana pudding is also yummy, however, it is way too sweet for our liking. I'd like to point out that Java rice is so good that I think that it isn't enough for a Filipino like me and I personally don't want to pay for another cup of Java rice. There were more sides than rice tbh. I was also a bit bummed that halo-halo isn't in the menu at all, With that being said, I feel like the food and desserts here are mostly catering the American palette, but it would be good for people who has never tried Filipino food.
