5 stars for Sawmill BBQ Pub & Grill. We were originally trying to go to another barbecue restaurant but they ran out of brisket (WHAT!). Then I typed in some great barbecue restaurants on Yelp, and there appeared Sawmill BBQ Pub & Grill. It looks like just a regular bar with a music stage, but don't judge a book by its cover - the food is amazing. The portions are massive and the prices are reasonable, as are the drink prices. This is definitely more of a locals joint, but definitely worth stopping in for anyone if you want some St. Louis style BBQ. The brisket platter was the best - big portions, 2 sides and 2 pieces of garlic bread. The Jalepano Mac and cheese balls are awesome, so much flavor. The salmon platter was also very tasty and fresh. The live music is fun (but loud), and our waitress was nice. Overall, if you what BBQ and are in the area, this is definitely worth checking out. read more

Came here on a total whim for an outdoor lunch after checking out a potential boat purchase. So technically I was "doing research," but let's be honest, I was really here for the vibes and the food. The food was absolutely amazing! Very very busy place on this hott Saturday evening. We got here before the band started which is what I wanted. The service was by an older couple behind the bar! I discovered Sawmill a while back and when it was time to order for a working lunch at the office they were the first restaurant that came to mind. The catering menu is online and straightforward. There was a long wait at the Mexican restaurant nearby so my friend & I decided to give Sawmill a go last night after we confirmed they had a patio! We were pleasantly surprised by the large menu and had a hard time choosing what to get! So many of the sandwiches sounded great but we ended up going with platters because we decided we needed two sides (there were about a dozen to choose from!) The food came out within 10 minutes and our server was happy to bring us each a couple of the sauces to try. My friend had pulled pork with the sweet & spicy BBQ sauces and I had the brisket with spicy & Carolina mustard sauces. The brisket had good flavor and was pretty tender. I preferred the spicy sauce by a long shot. Baked beans were yummy and the japaleno mac & cheese bites with house made ranch are were one of the best deep fried snacks I've had out in a long time. From the outside, it looked a bit sterile. Yet, once we got inside, it was warm and inviting. Our party of 7 was seated quickly. Our waitstaff arrived, taking drink orders and delivered post haste. My Bulleit old fashioned was perfect. However, my sisters Jack and Coke was really made with Pepsi -- she didn't care for it. I ordered the smoked turkey wrap and sweet potato fries. It was not only a generous serving but deliciously prepared. I have enough for lunch tomorrow. My spouse got a pick 2, which was hotlink and brisket (sides baked beans and slaw). We definitely didn't mind and appreciated them working us in! This is a good place to bring groups, lots of table seating and open area. They also had live music which is super fun. Our waitress hates her job so thinking she was efficient she hurried us through out the experience. The food was also hurried and my fried cod was more Cod-Jerky than anything else. It has been a while since we joined the D's for lunch at a barbecue joint. We decided on Sawmill since it is close by in West County and neither couple had been here before. Mr D ordered a pulled pork sandwich, Ms D a Turkey wrap, Ms T a Turkey sandwich and chose a combo of ribs and pulled pork. We were underwhelmed. The barbecue mostly was not bad, but it needed a little help. So here it is in ascending order. Ribs - My ribs were nicely cooked, tender, but not mush. They came clean off the bone and were still moist. The issue is they had almost no smoke and what little rub they had was missing salt. I like that they serve them without sauce, good barbecue does not needed it. I suspect these are smoked in an electric smoker. They had no bark. They could have been very good with a better rub and some smoke. I would rate them a strong three stars, not bad, could easily have been better. Pulled Pork - The pulled pork was much like ribs, albeit a little drier. This is a case where, with some sauce on a sandwich, it would be greatly improved. It was not something to enjoy straight. Again, it really missed a good rub with some salt and more smoke. I thought of it as roasted pork, not barbecue. Thankfully it was not too dry, was tender and not stringy. This rates a weak 3 stars for both Mr D and me. Turkey - Neither Ms T nor Ms D thought much of the smoked turkey. I sampled it and agreed. In fact, it was simply bad. No smoke, no seasoning and extremely dry. It is not sliced (would be impossible), it comprises crumbles (like Lion's Choice beef). I found it inedible. It may have been bad, but they gave a huge serving on the bun. This needed a ton of mayo and sauce. Ms D said it was better on the wrap since they put some other stuff in the wrap that moistened it. Ms T rated it a 2, which I say is generous. As bad as Smokee Mo's is, their turkey was much better. For sides, I was reasonably happy with my slaw and baked beans. Both rate in the 3-4 range. Ms T and I took a lot of leftover meat home, chopped it all and will sauce it for sandwiches and it will be good. BTW, while I really liked their "hot" sauce, Ms T's sweet sauce was strange. We think it was over-seasoned with poultry seasoning or thyme or some such herb. It was definitely herbal and seemed inappropriate. We were in agreement that if someone wanted to come back, we would, but it would not be a priority. read more

First time here and I ordered the half slab of the baby back ribs and it comes with two sides. I chose the green beans and fried pickle spears. The meat fell from the bones. The meat was soooo tender. The ribs have a dry rub and they serve them with bbq sauce which I used and it made the meat even tastier. Another big hit are the fried pickle spears. They are served with an aioli sauce for dipping which added to the great flavor. If you like dill or dill pickles you should try them. The green beans were light on the seasoning so I poured a little of the aioli sauce on them which helped a lot. My server was Joe and he was very busy but he was on top of everything. Sawmill BBQ is located very close to our house, yet we've never tried it. Well, we just did the other evening, and LOVED it. Everything was bursting with flavor and the meat was beyond tender. Fantastic ribs, cold beer and outstanding service! This was my first time visiting Sawmill BBQ & Pub and I was not disappointed. They have a reputation for great ribs, and they lived up to that! We had ribs plus sautéed broccoli, and onion rings. Everything was perfectly done! I had sauce on the side that kicked the flavor with some heat and my friend had the rib plain. Both were wonderful! For dessert we split the coconut cream pie - OMG this was absolutely fantastic! All in all a great experience on a Tuesday night that set the stage for the rest of the week! Added some BBQ vinaigrette dressing and was very pleased. Actually enough for a couple meals. My wife had a pizza - bacon and onion. Sorry to say but it was disappointing. It had a crisp thin crust. Excellent BBQ! I measure BBQ by using Kansas City as a benchmark and Sawmill BBQ comes super close. The ribs were tender and juicy and enough for a hearty appetite with excellent sides. The service was also outstanding which was a very nice too compared to other places. Our server was outstanding and provided great recommendations. The pork steak was also delicious and prepared perfectly which can be tricky but Sawmill BBQ did it great. Sawmill just opened this year, in the same parking lot as the very crowded Rosalita's. Though I'm not a big beer drinker, I was surprised at how few beers they had available for being a pub. I treated myself to a filet mignon with sides of red potatoes, mac and cheese bites, and grilled bread with a cup of broccoli cheese soup. The broccoli cheese soup was thick and balanced. The potatoes were pretty dry, but the horseradish steak butter that came with the plate helped spruce them up. I loved the mac and cheese bites! They had some jalapeño in them which provided an awesome kick. I had some trouble with the steak though. I always order medium so that if I get either medium-rare or medium-well I'm still okay. However, while presented well (see photo 1), the steak was way over done (see the left side of photo 2). The server brought a new cut but the second one was rare. Nice grill marks and a juicy piece of meat with a great horseradish butter to put on, but I couldn't get the temperature right. Bonus points on Sawmill for attempting to make it right though. Overall, for a place competing with the nearby Mexican joint for customers, I would be willing to come back, if nothing else for those great mac and cheese bites! read more

Our server, Lisa, was so kind and was one of the best I've witnessed. Apps were the delicious garlic cheese bread and buffalo chicken strips. So good and filling! Timed perfectly, we got our meals right after finishing apps. I had the brisket platter with fries and corn nuggets. He had the 2 meat platter, with shredded chicken, brat, jalapeño Mac bites, and side salad (leafy). Pulling into the parking area we noticed a sign that said "no parking for Rosalita's" which is across the parking lot and had a pretty good sized lot of its own. I found it amusing, but now thinking it is probably a sign that we should have gone to Rosalita's. The restaurant appeared to be clean enough, but rather bare and uninviting. We were seated relatively quickly, but that's probably because it was not at all busy during this lunch hour. On the table there were only napkin wrapped utensils - no salt & pepper, sweetener for tea/coffee, no bbq sauce. Our server came by to take drink orders. My sister and I ordered unsweet tea. He asked if we wanted sweetener and we said yes. When he brought the drinks, he had a couple sugar and sweet & low packets crumbled up in his hands. Please invest in a couple of small dishes so you can either keep them on the table or bring them to the table in a nicer way than crumpled in a server's hand. We ordered: pulled pork sandwich with chips for my sister; brisket sandwich with potato salad for me; and brisket Philly with fries for my husband. We were asked what, if any, bbq sauce we wanted and we each chose one. Interestingly, my husband was never asked if he wanted ketchup for his fries nor was any brought to the table at any point for his fries. Guess they just figured the BBQ sauce was all he needed. The food itself was edible, but that's about as good as it gets. Brisket was dry. The buns, which the menu said we're grilled, had so much oil on them that it was all we could taste. (When you're grilling bread, you only need a small amount. I know - I do it all the time. And here's a tip - butter gives a much better flavor than oil when grilling bread.) My sister and I both kept the top off our sandwiches and just ate the meat out of them. My potato salad was decent. The server did tell us it was sour cream based, which I appreciated knowing. My sister's chips looked like they were the bottom of the bag - so many small broken pieces. My husband said his fries were decent, but nothing special. Could have been frozen fries for all we know. My sister did ask for a refill on her tea and when the server brought it, he just plopped it on the end of the table without a word (she was sitting on the inside of her booth seat by herself) and kept walking while answering the phone. Couldn't someone else have been responsible for answering phone calls if he was supposed to be serving? He did basically the same when dropping off our check, just dropped it off and kept walking.
