I was very glad when I heard another chicken and fish place was taking over the spot of Crestwood's OG - King Edward's. Outside of the building has been redone and yes, the inside as well. While there are large screens displaying the menu and the place has clearly experienced some much needed face-lift, I was really hoping for food quality that would grab me and never let go. It is worth noting that the menu items appear to be a la carte. I love fried green tomatoes so I ordered that off of their appetizer menu and a buffalo chicken sandwich, no modification. My husband had the 3 piece fried chicken and a medium order of fries. My buffalo chicken sandwich was good but not exactly mind blowing. The chicken was lukewarm but perhaps because they were waiting for my husband's fried chicken? No, that was not it. I tried his fried chicken, it was okay and slightly warm. They could have benefited from a little more seasoning. The FGT were made of pickled tomatoes. I have nothing against pickles, I love them in fact but I like the traditional non pickled FGT. Just a preference and I don't remember seeing this noted as "pickled" on the menu. There are other things I'd like to try from here someday such as the fish and their collard greens side. My first time here. I love Buffalo sauce so I ordered the Buffalo Soldier. It was really tasty. It had a large chicken breast, lettuce, pepper jack cheese, pickles, and onion straws. He said it had just the right amount of ranch to cool off the buffalo. He really enjoyed it. I had the Filet-o-Grace, and it was a really good combination of flavors. We split a regular order of fries with a side of pimiento queso. Yum! The fries are well seasoned and don't "need" anything with them -- but the queso was so worth it. They have a selection of local soft drinks and alcoholic options and a few dessert options. They also have a space to get some sauces for your food. The latest location of Grace. Dangerous because it is so much closer to home than the location the The Grove! We tried a couple of different things, including the Cajun crawfish bread which was spicy and tasty! The chicken strips are always good and the sides were fresh and well seasoned! The rest of the menu seems to mirror the original location. Sounds like brunch is coming soon, but not available yet. Space is limited because of the space, but table emptied fairly quickly when we were there. Just be a little patient and you'll be fine! We wondered if because of the way the room is laid out, that they may try just having 3 long communal tables. The location is clean and bright, with minimal decoration. The ones that we saw had fun designs. A small issue, they do charge for sauce for chicken strips (my daughter got ranch for $1) but there's a station by the drinks where you can get your own cups for free. GCF has been unfairly compared to the beloved icon, King Edward's. GCF is not like KingE nor is it trying to be. King is delicious value indulgence while GCF is trying to put a spin on that traditional comfort food, so I will judge GCF purely on taste for this review. I stopped by on a whim when I saw the parking lot was less crowded. I ordered the cat nuggets and it was what I expected. Delicious lightly breaded catfish with corn meal. The seasoning was on the salty side (I have less tolerance than most in terms of salt) so I would encourage to order a drink to go with the meal. Three out of five for now as I want to experience consistentcy and other things on the menu on planned numerous visits in the near future. I struggle with this review because I really respect the OG location for everything the owner did for people during Covid, but I was so overwhelmed by this location and disappointed. I'll start with a positive, the entire staff was so fantastic and friendly and helpful. Even though you order out a counter, they still bring you your food and are attentive like a server would be in a restaurant. The location is good with lots of windows so you get the sunshine inside the restaurant. Now onto the negative. Unfortunately, all of the food we had was not great. I got the fish and it was so overcooked and unseasoned that no amount of sauce could save it. Considering the very high price point for the food, that was even more shocking that it was so poorly executed. For two small pieces of battered cod that barely cover a slice of white bread, it was $15, almost $20 after tax and tip. New location in Crestwood! They have a slightly different menu offering vs the location in Tower Grove, but all great options! I opted for the extra hot 3 tender meal with fries and a drink. They apologized and gave us a brownie to compensate for the lapse. Also had fries and cole slaw. The fries were good. Cole slaw was okay. Another in our group had the crawfish bread with fries. He said they were both good. The third in our party had fried chicken (legs) sweet potatoes and coleslaw. She wanted mashed potatoes but they only had the mashed sweet potatoes which she said were just okay. This establishment is close to home and was replacing the king Edward's chicken and fish establishment. I didn't order their staples, so I can't judge them on their signature dishes, but what I did get was still very good--especially with all the sauces (which I loved). We made our way outside to eat because the weather was fine. When they brought out the food, it looked sooo good including the collard greens. However, when I took a bite out of the greens, it was super-duper salty. Inedible salty. I made a sad face and paused my eating. I am not one to send food back, so I had my friend try it and she too felt it was oversalted so when someone came to check on us, we sent it back and asked for mac n cheese. Now THAT was delicious and not oversalted. I ate all my meal except the bread (I never eat the bread that is soaking up the oil). The fish was perfectly crusty yet tender and not over or under seasoned. I do not know what sauce I grabbed but the fish was good with that. Upon entering, I was greeted by CC who was pleasant and delightful to talk too. I was going to get my normal four wing platter when CC raved about the chicken and waffles, so I opted for the latter. I got home and opened up the catfish and I just couldn't believe the 2 pieces I got for $12. They were so small, like 3 bites and they were gone. The shrimp was fine as was the bird but at $18 the wing could have been a full wing and the drum stick was teeny. The taste was fine as were the sides. The restaurant was freshly painted and welcoming. The famous meals were pretty good deals.
