This Thai restaurant is off the beaten path on Waialae Ave. we were staying in Waikiki but the drive was worth it. Upon entering the restaurant it felt cozy with low lighting. There was even a Buddha statue on the back wall that was very nice to see. We met friends for dinner and had a large table in the main dining room. There was also an indoor outdoor patio in the other side of the restaurant. The waitresses were friendly and the service was fast. We ordered multiple dishes for our group of six. I especially enjoyed the different curries. The green curry had a spicy kick and the masala curry was flavorful with a rich peanut flavor. The sticky rice paired perfectly with the saucy curries... our group ordered multiple servings. :) To end our dinner we had the mango with sticky rice and it definitely hit the spot! The mango was so ripe and the sticky rice was creamy covered in coconut sauce. Sooooo ono (delicious)! *Parking can be difficult when dining at this restaurant. We parked on a side street near the neighborhood housing.

*3.5* due to protein quantity Came here on the weekend shortly after opening, Not too busy. Service was friendly and fast. Had to order the special - appetizer which was more like a main dish size surprisingly - crispy fried rice salad. Sooo good. Crispy rice with a hint of citrus acidity mixed in at the end. Could do with more lime on top as well. crunchy texture pairs well. Also tried the evil jungle curry - with chicken - curry sauce was good with coconut milk packed in. not spicy at medium, would consider thai hot next time. very small quantity of chicken, but had other veggies in there. Would like to see more appropriate protein amount in dish. Lastly tried the pad kee mao - at first sight - the noodle seems more pale and bright then what I was expecting. However, the flavor was still there despite the color. Ordered with the shrimp - had maybe 4 pieces. Again should have more in quantity. Noodle texture was just right and bouncy and chewy.

I hardly if ever give a one star rating but the only thing I enjoyed about dinner tonight was the cute decor- service was alright. Soup lacked depth and flavor- Crab curry salty but lacked taste- pad thai noodles were stuck together and peanuts a but rancid but overall taste was subpar --

I thought that bad Thai food was like pizza... even if it's bad it's still pretty good? Nope. This was easily the worst Thai food I've had in as long as I remember. Maybe it's decent if you live in Kansas but this is Honolulu and we have so many great options. First- the parking lot is tighter than an 80's instructor's spandex. We literally had to move our car to be able to open the door to get out. The food- Papaya salad was crunchy as in hard as a rock in certain bites. Green papaya had turned to stone and I found an entire lime peel thrown into it! Like who wants to bite into that?! And there were entire chilis haphazardly thrown into it. I ate a few pieces that tasted like a cleaning rag. It was gross and pungent. The summer rolls were the best thing we got and usually those are the most boring basic thing on the menu but we were trying to be "healthy." The peanut sauce was literally brown water tho. It was actually pathetic. The green curry with pork was awful too. There was a lot of spice but it was so watered down all we got was heat and no flavor. It was filled with so many veggies and barely any pork or eggplant which should have been the main ingredients. I think they skipped using coconut milk and just used water with the curry paste. I don't know if we hit them on an off night or if they are really putting out such poor quality food on a regular basis but we are not planning to return. It was spicy but flavorless if that makes sense...

This is $17 ! I should've went to Kentucky or something.

I went to take out fried chicken and it only had 2 pieces in it and cost about $17 ?? On the menu it looked more and that's why I ordered but oh well...

Nice Atmosphere, But That's About It Red Elephant Thai Restaurant looked promising, but the experience fell flat. The place was nearly empty, yet the service was still slow. The only thing that came out fast was the spring roll--and it was cold, hard, and tasted old, like it had been sitting or possibly returned by someone else. I took one bite and had to send it back. Instead of replacing it with a fresh one, they just didn't bring another at all--no explanation, no apology. It was awkward and confusing. The Pad see ew and Thai fried rice were both bland and underwhelming. For a Thai restaurant, the flavors were seriously lacking. On the bright side, the atmosphere was actually nice and surprisingly peaceful, despite being right off a major street. But sadly, that was the best part of the visit. Wouldn't go out of my way to return.

Not sure why this place has such a high rating. Our experience fell way below expectations, just like another reviewer had mentioned. We ordered the duck curry ($25), which came with barely 2 tiny duck meat nothing like the picture on the menu. The curry itself was average at best, lacking the depth and flavor you'd expect from a Thai restaurant. It also didn't come with rice, which we had to order separately. At that price point, every other restaurant in the area includes rice, so this felt disappointing. Next, we got the pad kee mow and paid extra for chicken, only to find almost to none in the dish. Definitely not worth the upcharge. Service was also just average. I asked for a straw, and the server never returned. I eventually had to get up and go to their station to ask again, only to be told they had just one straw left. If she had come back and said that directly, it wouldn't have been an issue. Also, the serving plate was chipped. The outdoor seating area was nice, but there were a lot of flies and service was slow overall considering there were barely any customers (only 2 tables including ours). When it came time to pay, the server brought over the device immediately and stood there watching as I selected the tip, which felt pretty uncomfortable and pressured. Overall, I wouldn't return or recommend this place.

Very tasty classic Thai food with express pick up (drive through at rear) and awesome indoor dining ambience with lovely service. Had it twice this week because it's so good. Green curry was also good, but be sure to order rice with it.

Phone lines get very very busy on a Sunday evening at 7-8pm. Had to go to the physical location to order takeout. Very kitsch ambiance and vibe, with a lot of young diners. Parking entrance is directly to the left of the lit up red building, and additional parking at the Mathnasium building further left. Parking is tight.. Ordered the drunken noodles with shrimp, green curry with chicken and pad pring king with beef. Be easy on the staff - they were constantly running around attending to some service or another. Took a while for the food to be ready however staff were very kind and gave me a complimentary thai ice tea! Which was surprisingly very strong, not to sweet which was very much to my liking. Food was top notch, piping hot, and I inhaled it all! Had enough leftovers for another filling meal! Price points are a little high, but not terrible. The shrimp was fresh! As were the veggies. And the beef did not taste gummy at all. The beef stir fry had that smokey taste from the wok which was very good. One of the best Thai foods in town, very very high up!

5th star for the service and attention at the from of the house I've been here on a few occasions and never got around to penning my review. So here goes- Located at the north western gateway to Kaimuki is a red building, home to the Red Elephant. If that direction doesn't help you, then know it is on Waialae before you hit MacDonald's. If you pass Mac Donald's, you've gone to far. And if that doesn't help you, then know it is on the north side of Waialae Ave, across the street from the Kaimuki Center; where Times, Longs, Hi State FCU and other merchants are located. OK, now that we all know where they are located, let's go on about the food. Mild Medium and Hot are the levels for the sauces and curries. Portions are relatively large so you're better off going with a few and dine "family style". Fish patties and egg rolls are pretty basic at most Thai restaurants including the Red Elephant. If you're lucky enough to dine with those who know Thai cuisine then, you will be able to graze through their ethnic dishes with no problem (just remember! Mild Medium and Hot.... be sure you get that specified)

You see it, but yet you don't stop check what it is, not to worry i did it for you. Parking in the rear about 6-8 stalls and .2 on the side the building as you enter. Down home feeling as you enter the dining room area, Outdoor dining available as well, greeting with a warm smile and felt at home. Fish curry was not like the pictured displayed i like my skin golden brown, but it was delish to say the least plentiful portion of fresh veggies and fish curry. Beef salad ordered medium with plenty of onions and side of cucumber which i needed to scale back the heat, freshness is the key here and it shows. Corn salad blew me away, i hate veggies but this dish i could eat everyday, simple hand picked farm to table. Loved it read more

It's you're looking for authentic Thai food this is your place to go. Located right across the times on Waialae is where you would find This restaurant. You won't miss it because it's the only red building. The only down side to their location is the parking situation. Not quite sure if they have parking in the back but we were lucky to find a spot to the side of the restaurant. They have indoor and outdoor sitting. I think there is one table where you actually sit cross cross on a pillow. Very nice outdoor seating area with a tree going through the ground up to the roof. I love Pad Kee Mao and I would always try to find the best places on the island with it. I must say this is actually the best place you can get it. I've tried other well known restaurants but I don't get that full flavor and the aromatics like this place. Def a place to check out if you are in the area! read more

Soft opening for this Thai place that over the previous Thai place that was here. They renovated and looks quite lovely inside. The lanai area is decorated in a Thai style and looks inviting. The food we ordered was flavorful. Although because it's a soft opening they didn't have some of their more interesting menu items yet like the fried rice salad. Also there was a looooong delay to get our takeout food. But the flavor was good enough that I'm definitely gonna go back once they get their bearings. We got the crispy tofu appetizer with peanut sauce - the tofu itself is fine but the sauce was excellent; like a salty homemade chunky peanut butter. We got the pork spare ribs soup called Tom Saep Moo. This was good not a huge different from Tom Yum; maybe less sour and the broth was more meaty. Our fave was the cashew nut stir fry that we got with chicken. Flavorful and delicious. Got pad kee mao drunken noodles which was spicy but not overwhelmingly so and had lots of veggies. Enjoyed that a lot. Wanted to get deep fried fish with garlic but they didn't have. The hub ordered sweet and sour fish which was fine but nothing special. And in fact just tasted like regular sweet and sour anything. Which I actually don't like. Anyhow, despite the 1 hour wait for our food beyond the agreed pick up time, it was excellent. Will give them another chance once they get into a groove. read more

Finding takeout is always an adventure for my family. Especially when one of the five is vegetarian. Red Elephant Thai Cuisine has filled that options for us. Their menu has a variety of vegetarian and meat dishes to choose from. Although in the end we decided to order everything vegetarian. The phone call was a very pleasant one. She was very kind and professional and made sure our order was definitely correct. Her communication skills was very professional. When we arrived, the parking lot is located behind the restaurant and we had no trouble finding parking (around 2pm - weekday). The atmosphere of the restaurant was very clean and tidy. There is an option for outside dining along with inside but we were there for pickup. The food was absolutely delicious for my wife and I. But the favorites for my kids was the spring rolls which I thought was a bit on the "lumpia" style but still delicious. As for the noodles and curry, we enjoyed it - a robust of flavors. If your taste buds love spice, definitely try the Pad Kee Mao (S8). Give it a try if you're in the neighborhood!! read more

Service was a little slow but the atmosphere and food was great! Their papaya salad is especially fresh and tasty, and their green curry with tofu was heavy on the bamboo but I really enjoyed it. Really great ambience--it's a fun place to hang out for sure. Food is solid and the staff are really nice. I like their panang curry although it has a ton of green beans in it. But it has great flavor. The pad thai is fine but maybe a little greasy. Their Pad See Ew is really good. Overall, I've been pleased with the food, but the reason why I keep coming back is more because it's a really fun place to hang out due to their outdoor seating patio with fun seats and lights. read more

My boyfriend and I got take out from here on a busy Sunday (early) evening. We got the Fried Chicken, Evil Jungle Curry and an order of sticky rice. Everything was tasty, especially the curry! I haven't had that style of curry for a long time, so it was a nice treat! I'm not sure if you can choose the spice level, but what we got was perfect for me...not too spicy. Since it was a busy night, we did have to wait about 30 minutes, but it was understandable since they had a steady stream of people coming in and lots of phone calls for orders. Although there is the option to dine in, I think there was only one or two couples eating there. The inside space is deceptively bigger than it seems, but the parking is tight with about 5 or 6 spaces. I would definitely order from here again! read more

Great Thai food ! It's genuine Thai food not Chinese or Vietnamese style . Had number of different shrimp and chicken and tofu dishes and veggies dishes -- all were delicious as well as desserts too . Ambiance indoors is cozy and has many interesting Thai decorations . Only downside is their very narrow access lane to their very small (& limited spaces) parking lot behind restaurant. No street parking close by. read more

Pad Thai - perfect tangy boingy noodles and tasty, different tiny morsels...while not being greasy..yum! Curry mild is a little hotter than expected, but very tasty. Order non, if you can't handle. Love this Kaimuki Thai spot. Basil chicken or pork is my go to lunch option w Sticky rice. Definitely recommend the hot spicy, mild just doesn't hit the same. I probably eat basil chicken/pork 4-5 times a month easy. read more

My office has been coming here since they opened. They even called me neighbor when they saw me. PORTION CONTROLL!!!!!! Today we ordered the duck soup and Sa-teh chicken and the wings. The duck soup was basically duck skin soup with little to no meat at all which we can deal with but both of the chicken appetizers were like HALF what they should be based on the photos and recent memory. We called to talk to the owner or manager to get an explanation and they were too busy to talk to us. No call back. INCORRECT TIME QUOTE!!!! They are consistently wrong when they tell you how long it's going to take. They told us 20 minutes and after 20 mins I left to go pick up and had to sit in there for 15 more minutes. I don't know what's going on over there, I don't know if they just don't care anymore or if the cook is eating half the portion or what but we won't be coming back. I implore you to do the same. read more

The Steamed Fish in Chinese style was vey good! Fish was fresh and the vegetables padded under were also just rightly done. The rice was flagrant. The price in current time is unbeatable! The server was very friendly and polite: The ambiance was outstanding in presenting the Thai culture. There were two miniature red elephants on display inside the restaurant. Overall impression and experience were 5 stars. read more

Sometimes the staff don't notice me (or customers) coming into the store and waiting to be seated......but the food is amazing and their spice level was the real deal. Great service overall while dinning. The interior design is beeeaaaauuutiful!!! Lovely place. read more

Pay with cash and get a 5% discount. Not sure if this is a promo or here to stay but it's worth it to consider bringing cash for that discount. Food is consistently good. Each dish has fresh ingredients, is made to order, and it's a decent portion size to share between two people. For those who are used to getting cheaper Thai food, you may be surprised by the higher prices but the quality is worthwhile. The roti with vanilla ice cream is my favorite dish, though I have enjoyed all of the appetizers and main dish items I've ordered. read more

Always good food and good service here. This is my new go-to Thai place! I've tried the red curry with a side of rice, and also the pad Thai. Both great dishes! I feel like the noodle dishes are big enough to split with one other person, unless you have a big appetite! The staff is also very friendly and accommodating- we got seated one night an hour before closing when the waiter was already swamped. He still sat us, and was kind and patient and managed to get all of our food out. So hard-working and nice! I'd highly recommend this place. read more

Yikes. The pad thai tasted like something that was expired and pushed out of a tube. Didn't even taste like actual sweet and savory pad Thai. The crispy squid was unseasoned, just squid in batter. No salt or pepper or fried basil leaves like other Thai places. Pad woon sen was flavorless. Fish cakes were very soggy and off. They tasted like substitute fish or no fish? Pad see ew was only acceptable dish, interestingly enough they use both Chinese broccoli and American broccoli. read more

The Food and Atmosphere at Red Elephant is awesome. The dining room is charming and the pianist provides amazing music that adds to the ambiance and atmosphere. The pianist played beautiful music on a grand piano on the patio seating. Wow. What a treat! He was awesome. The food was good too. I ordered the pineapple curry and it was delicious. Food was just OK. Not a lot of strong flavors or spice, which is what I like. If you like less intense flavors this is probably the Thai restaurant for you. I liked the airy eating area in the front, but we had already ordered for takeout so we didn't get to enjoy that. The parking lot was extremely hard to turn around in. read more

Every time I come to Hawaii to see my family, it's a priority to come here. The food is always so fresh and delicious and the atmosphere is relaxing. I wish I had a Thai restaurant like this back home where I live. Service is always fantastic too. Highly recommend!! read more

Our meal was incredible; very delicious and fulfilling -- it does live up to its hype. The prices are actually very affordable and fairly priced. As someone who was drawn to red elephants by its popularity, I can't help but feel let down by the overall dining experience. Upon entering the restaurant, the atmosphere seemed promising, but unfortunately, the food failed to live up to expectations. Despite the restaurant's claim to offer authentic Thai cuisine, the dishes we tried lacked the genuine flavors we were hoping for. The taste was off, and it was evident that the food was far from being authentic Thai. Moreover, the prices were exorbitant considering the quality of the food served. It felt like we were paying a premium for a subpar dining experience. Service was another major letdown. It took an unreasonable amount of time to receive our orders, and the wait for dessert was particularly frustrating, extending well beyond what one would consider acceptable. In conclusion, while may be popular among some, I cannot in good conscience recommend it to others seeking an authentic Thai dining experience. From the disappointing food to the lackluster service and high prices, there are certainly better options available for those craving genuine Thai cuisine. read more

Came here with a couple friends for lunch. Two of us had traveled to Thailand before and the food here brought us right back there!!! Incredible tasting food, nice service and fun atmosphere. The Tom Kha was full of flavor with fresh kefir leaves and slices of fresh ginger. The Papaya Salad is offered in 3 heat levels and the medium still allowed us to taste the freshness of the papaya while giving us some heat. The Pad Thai was perfectly peanutty, Green Curry had a great coconut base and the Pad Woo Sen was equally delicious. All very fresh and delicious! The interior was bright, clean and cheerful. I had an amazing time at red elephant. The dishes were all so delicious and they also had vegan / vegetarian options! Service was great, attentive, and the food was amazing. The ambiance was very enjoyable as well. They do have parking in the back, but I ended up just parking across the street by times and walking over. I was only able to take pictures of the dessert, but the purple rice with coconut and taro was my favorite. I will definitely be returning. read more
