Such a great, community based cafe. It feels very cozy inside, with lots of seating options. I especially appreciate that they offer a gluten free version of every menu item, including waffles, grilled sandwiches, and breakfast sandwiches. They offer sweet or savory, stuffed waffles as well. There's a play area in the back for kids, and you'll often find moms frequenting this cafe with their littles. Just a lovely spot, and I'm glad Tacoma has it! read more

I rarely give 5 stars unless I got something free but I'm giving 5 for the price! I got a cappuccino, $3!! I recently paid for a $5 cappuccino that was tiny and not as good. I got the waffle and sprung the extra fifty cents for whipped cream (highly recommended!). it came with butter, maple syrup, and a strawberry jam. Everything was under $10! amazing and so yummy that waffle- YASS. The aussie toast is like $3 wtf! and the lady behind the counter was so sweet. Like she actually complimented me and had a conversation about my lipstick. Not the "Hi How are you whatcanIgetyou" everyday spiel. It caught me off guard - the world needs a little more human connection. anyways. yes. cute cafe. Kid friendly with a kids area in the back so I admit there are screaming children and some people may not find that to be the most relaxing atmosphere for a coffee. Fun quick breakfast place. Really only place open nearby while we waiting for the children's museum to open. Seating in front room limited, nice couches and hang out spot. Kids area. Food wasnt a big hit for me. Quick bites, stuff made in a griddle, and sandwich press. Not terrible, not exciting for me. Great crowd. They have only been open two weeks at the time I'm writing this, and they are doing a great job already! They are very brave to put everything into a new business, and in my opinion, their bravery has paid off in spades. I am so glad this area has such a great place to eat! The menu is great. Budget friendly sandwiches, waffles, womelletes, and my favorite.. the waffle dog. Get it with syrup for dipping! The "dog" inside is delicious, like a Costco dog. I've had the turkey sausage egg sandwich and the chicken and spinach sandwich and a blueberry muffin there so far. I plan on trying the whole menu :) When you go there, you will love the warm, relaxed, and beautiful atmosphere too. It's not a cold, clanky cafe, it's like going to your best friends house, you feel like staying a while. I love a place with a couch and a bookshelf so you can really get comfortable with your friends and your coffee. They have free wifi, and they are really fast bringing your food out too. We had 6 meals coming to our table and it was all delivered in under 10 minutes from the time we paid. Everything is under $5 by the way, kind of amazing :) We parked around the back, and there is a door you can go in on the back side of the restaurant. My husband and I came here while we anxiously waited to hear if we would be admitted to the hospital to be induced. The staff was SO friendly and were very excited about our twins. I found this by chance on my way out of town. What a beautiful shop - I had a breakfast sandwich and a coffee, fully intending to take them to go, but then a little loveseat beckoned me to sit a while. While I was here, I saw two of the citizens of the street welcomed kindly and respectfully, and they are now quietly sipping hot coffees as well. I dropped by to order a breakfast sandwich (the veggie one) and a hash brown. The people working were super friendly and service was very quick! The sandwich was nice and toasty with good flavor and the hash brown hit the spot! A great pit stop for breakfast after leaving a shift at the hospital. Red Elm floored me with their waffle+caramel sauce. I have never had such a delectably buttery caramel sauce on anything IN MY LIFE. I professed my love for said caramel sauce to one of the fine workers at this establishment, AND THEY GAVE ME SOME TO TAKE HOME. The staff at Red Elm Cafe was incredibly kind and passionate when we stopped through with a group of 11 on our way through Tacoma up to Port Angeles. I called ahead and was able to reserve their back room/meeting space so that we were not monopolizing the main room of the coffee shop. We sampled everything from their soup and sandwiches to their waffle mozzarella stick and waffle dogs. Additionally, I can only speak for their americano but their coffee was delicious! Everyone was satisfied and found something they really enjoyed which is no small feat for 11 people. Red Elm Cafe served as the perfect meeting spot to start off a girls weekend. If I lived in this neighborhood I would be a regular. The people are friendly, it's counter service, but I felt my needs were met. It is a comfortable open space to hang out in and there wasn't a rush. The food was delicious, we had a sausage stack, waffle and a breakfast sandwich, all we eaten to the last crumb. The coffee is also very good, hot, strong and not bitter. We will return. The whole place is neat and clean the only thing I would change is the strong smelling soap in the bathrooms. Stopped in Tacoma for one night and swung by Red Elm for breakfast on the way home. Updated menu includes a vegan waffle (and gluten free)! It was delicious: crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. Served with syrup and a strawberry sauce. There was ample seating and a children's play area. Small little place on the outside but quite spacious on the inside. A cross between a coffee shop and a quaint restaurant. Self ordering, self bussing of your tables so make sure you're okay with that before hand. Menu is simple so you can easily make a decision. We came for breakfast and tried Aussie toast - had on sourdough with avocado spread with feta. Quite delicious. We added a few sausage stacks and these were extremely well priced. Quite tasty as well but cooled off quickly with the tomato and spinach. All in all ordered five things including coffee and with generous tip/tax...$20 and comfortably full. Love this place: it sits well in the Hilltop neighborhood with a relaxed, easy, inclusive vibe. It feels like a community gathering spot. The food selection is good, with breakfast sammies that include vegetarian options (thanks).
