I love this place! I drive all the way from Olympia to visit this cafe. The vegan waffles are even more delicious than the traditional ones, and the coffee is always great. My daughters and I have been to Red Elm a few times now and each time is the same - awesome! The owners and workers are super friendly, food comes out fast, it's a friggin bargain and it tastes great. Our favorites are the grilled cheese and tomato soup, the waffled mozzarella, the breakfast sandwiches and the cheddar/bacon waffle. I'm not a coffee drinker but their hot chocolate is on point and clearly had homemade whipped cream on it. The inside is welcoming too. Love this place! read more

A welcome addition to the Tacoma coffeehouse scene. Great interior, great location, great service. A couple suggestions: 1. Limited menu: expand the menu a little. The waffle dog is great but more options are always nice. 2. Limited seating: add a few more tables. There's room, without causing cramping. Having less than 10 tables in a place this size doesn't make sense. 3. Limited hours: stay open a little later. If you expanded the menu somewhat, you might get a decent "light dinner" crowd in the evening. read more

My new favorite place to read and drink coffee - friendly, comfortable, and with a great vibe. I especially love their dedication to good, affordable food - you can get a great waffle here or a breakfast sandwich or fresh baked good for very reasonable prices. Since I had to stop eating wheat I had to start eating at a lot of fancy places, and I LOVE that I can come here and eat an actual delicious gluten free waffle without paying a million dollars for it. I had high hopes for this cute little cafe. Looking at the menu everything looked delicious. I was hoping that the food would be great as they are a little hole in the wall place. Food was mediocre at best. Their "grilled" sandwiches are barely warm, just enough to put marks on the bread, didn't even melt the cheese. $5.25 for some spinach, Mozzarella, and unripe tomatoes. No thank you not again. It's a cute place but they really need to up their game on the food to be able to keep customers. read more

Who would have thought? MLK for a little cafe. Glad I stopped by. I got the grilled Chicken-Avo sandwich..which was pretty good. Wheat bread, pepper jack cheese, spinach and avocado! What else could you want? My friend and I also tried the waffle mozzarella stick. It wasn't bad but I feel the batter needs garlic added to it. Idk. Just a thought. Great little coffee shop, stopped in for a quick breakfast the other day and had the turkey sausage egg and pepper jack on sourdough and it was a good portion and filling and made fresh and hot!! Also had a cappuccino which was also very good I like the coffee they use, a quick look around and some some great products like juices and teas, yogurt parfaits and muffins for a quick pick up if you're in a hurry. It wasn't super busy which was nice and we didn't feel rushed. I want to go back and try the waffles they look yum!! Good prices and service! read more

First time here. Got there right at opening on Saturday. Had a latte and turkey sausage and egg on sour dough. It was tasty! Pretty reasonable price. Service was friendly. Nicely decorated cafe and family centric. They have a cute play area for kids. Good to see a nice business in this side of town. We love this place! Great coffee & tea, the waffles are the best around(even better than the new met-mart waffles) and the waffle-dogs are genius! My favorite part though is the staff. Everyone is so friendly and open minded. So many tacoma coffee shops feel "too cool" for me, but this one is different. Very welcoming to everyone, and still cool! This place is basic with a short menu of items. Refreshing place in the middle of hill top. Coffee is better than most places, and the waffles are great and fresh. Give it a shot if you're in the area. The only thing I've noticed is the staff is a little awkward or short at times. read more

What a great coffee shop/cafe in Tacoma! We were looking for a breakfast place and found their menu intriguing. Who wouldn't want a hot dog in a waffle? We ordered one waffle dog to share along with a turkey sausage breakfast sandwich for the hubs and chicken avo sandwich for me. We traded halves so we could try both sandwiches. The turkey sausage breakfast sandwich was good on sourdough and the chicken avo sandwich had a great avocado spread to compliment the chicken. We both loved the waffle dog. I liked it with all the condiments plus syrup, but my hubs liked it with just ketchup and mustard. The service was quick and very friendly. Would definitely go there again if we are in the area. read more

One of my favorite cafes! Wonderful atmosphere cozy enough for a breakfast date. The energy is very true to tacoma. The book shelf is great for when I'm alone and don't want to be in a phone. The waffles are good, but it is not worth the hype if you have to wait too long. If you can catch it when they're not busy it is worth a visit, but they have VERY limited seating and people sitting around just drinking coffee taking up some of the few tables. read more

The positive was a great space. Was not a fan of: Chicken and avocado on wheat was like sawdust, dry, dry, dry. Cheap bread, did not list items in the sandwich and when asked order taker ?, well lets just say she may have been having a not so great day. To me when it list avocado, you should get avocado and not an avocado spread. No mention of cheese on the board or when I asked about ingrediants in the sandwhich was there mention of pepper jack cheese. The cheese takes over and adds to the dry sawdust taste. My opinion is this, when I go out i want a meal i cant make at home. Something different that keeps me coming back. I hope they amp up their menu. Id rather pay a few dollars more for unique sandwhich. This was not the place for me read more

Wow! That is all I can say. This little coffee/cafe came as quite a surprise. The coffee is off the wall good, but the environment is created to be warm, inviting and create a space of quiet comfort . I was there so I decided a waffle must be eaten as well. This was a shot in the dark after finding it on yelp. My wife and I have tried many places since moving out here and finally found our favorite place. Everything about Red Elm is great. My wife, who hates eggs, loves them here. The chai latte was the best I've ever had, and her cappuccino was amazing- not too sweet and not too bitter. The food was great too.
