Since when did hiding rotten brown avocado under garnishes become a thing? I mean, we all love avocado, and we all understand that bruised, yucky ones come along like 25 percent of the time, and have to be thrown away, as a minor sacrifice to our avo gods. I myself am not too picky! But the 'Famous' avo toast I received here had brown and yucky avo slices concealed under some salad items and it was too gross even for me. It wasn't just a piece or two- it was all the pieces. It was clear that this avo needed to be sacrificed and just somehow made it onto my plate anyways. I sent it back and they replaced the dish but I am having a hard time understanding how this happens, especially at a place that advertised its avo toast like it is the best thing since sliced bread. On the plus side, it's a fun vibe inside with board games, and the merch in this shop is pretty cool and they sell t-shirts for reasonable prices. read more

All towering over 2 slices of sourdough toast. The coffee and fresh pineapple juice were next-level, too. The space is funky--a motley assortment of packaged food, clothes, souvenirs and thrift store stuff adds to the eclectic atmosphere, while Hawaiian reggae plays. A wonderful spot for breakfast and lunch! Today we had The Islands Local Favorite and Chef Ariel's Famous Hawaiian Cubano. The Cubano was my favorite Cuban sandwich I've ever had!! All of the ingredients popped and combined for a wonderful taste explosion. It came with a delicious house-made tortilla soup. The Local Fav was also quite tasty. The pork butt had a wonderful, smoky flavor. The pork, veggies, and sauce combined really well. I also had an excellent Caramel Latte, brewed with the coffee from the plantation here on Kaua'i. We want to come back and try some breakfast food, as well as having another Cubano. read more

When I flew in on Thursday, my shuttle driver told me to check out Red Eye Snack Shack for the best Loco Moco on the island of Kauai. A previous love affair with the food had found multiple disappointing subsequent experiences, so I wanted 'the best.' This was THE BEST in all the right ways. Kealoha answered the phone even though she was technically closed for renovations and somehow I was able to convinced her to fire up the kitchen because told her I had heard this place was the best. Well let me tell you, after living in Oahu for 8 years and after 8-10 return visits since then...this was #1 of all time!!! We had the Loco Moco with kalua and Hawaiian fried rice (their specialty) and it was ONO-licious!! I recommend this place for the food and especially for the ALOHA!!! Abi and crew REALLY took care of us when we rolled up, a party of 12, including 8 hungry kids after a long morning at the beach. We came here to visit the Pineapple store and happened to stumble upon this breakfast place. The owner was very nice and welcoming. She cooked an awesome breakfast (the best breakfast we had on our trip). I had the breakfast burrito and my wife had the Avocado Toast! The food was excellent and chatting with the owner gave us some local insight on activities that we went through with on our trip! This is a new business (open for 5 months). We are so happy to have stopped in to Red Eye Snack Shack during our vacation on Kaua'i! The ladies there are so attentive and the food is so ono (that means so good if ya don't know). This review is for their stall at the Taste of Aloha at Restaurant Row on 5/10/25. Was looking forward to trying their Kalo Crunch burger, but what I received was completely different from the advertised pic on Instagram. Tomato was replaced by cheese, the thick "deep-fried" burger was a thin sauteed patty devoid of any panko and the "deep fried crispy rice noodles" that would have made this a stand out were replaced by 5 soggy fries. Gave it a chance because the flavor could still be good but sadly, that was also lacking. Vibe is chaotic and unorganized. One star for the friendly and apologetic girl taking the orders. Wanted to support them since it was their first showing at this food event but simply cannot recommend. read more

OMG! We tried to go Wednesday morning. Ends up their hours of operation are different dependent on where you look. As of June 2024, they are closed on Wednesday. I'm so glad we went this morning! Top 3 best brunches of our trip, in my honest opinion, but mainly only for the food itself. Maybe I'm just a dumb tourist, but the waitress seemed out of sorts, and the restaurant could do with a decent facelift. The place wasn't busy at all, though! In and out but wasn't rushed. Impressive portion sizes. Food was spectacular and fresh--definitely recommend their loaded avocado toasts, as well as the pancakes. Again, the restaurant area could do with some decluttering/reorganizing, as our table backed up to a dressing room/a bunch of random tote buckets and I definitely felt in the way of that. read more

What a great find! They're on a blind curve so if you blink you'll miss them. But if you do, definitely circle back. They are so nice and the food is absolutely delicious! We had the banana bread with nuts (to die for) and avocado toast with eggs and bacon on top. Sooo good. The banana bread is the only bread I've ever tasted that reminds me of my grandma's. Literally the best on the planet! Be sure and stop off here for a coffee and brekkie. You'll be so glad you did. read more

Found on a whim on our way to the hotel. Staff are so nice. It's a small hole in the wall but it's easy to miss. It's a pineapple shack on the side of the main road close to the airport. The smoked meat was standout. Other great choices are the huli chicken sandwich. There's a small market in the store that sells local fruits and goods. The ordering is done like your typical poke place, you tell the service worker what you would like and there's a small toppings bar at the end before the cashier. There was a small line when we went, and even with the line, it still only took about 5-10 minutes to get our food. There isn't interior seating in the restaurant though, you will have to get your food take out, or just eat in the parking lot. I got the 3 scoops of poke option for $15.25, and I think that this is a pretty solid deal for the variety of fish that you can try out! I think based on my personal experience on Kaua'i, it will be difficult to get food, especially poke at a reasonable price. But for this price, it's probably the best place on the island to get poke without paying $20+ for the same variety. The fish tasted fresh, and I am a fan of the selection of toppings they had. If you are in the Lihue area and looking to try some poke at a reasonable price, I would recommend The Fish Express! There seems to be a decent amount of other interesting looking options on the menu, and if I'm ever in the area again, I would totally give them a try!
