Hands down, top 3 food places we enjoyed while vacationing in Kauai. Located in Koloa on the 2nd floor, is a very un-assuming breakfast joint offering Ono eats, and a decor you did not expect when walking through town. Inside is very modern and chic, with terracotta tables neutral colors of black and gold, and perfectly matching pendant lighting. We won't let the service get in the way of this review, because everyone is bound to have a bad day that unfortunately spills into your work life. I heard another table complain about our server, and it only confirmed that when they took our order, they were very short and dismissive... like we were doing them a disservice. I know that's not the norm, and we wont let that get in the way of an amazing meal. The food was amazing. Almost everything we got was top notch. If it sounds good on the menu? Get it. In particular the pork belly bowl. I would honestly get it Tinono style, because the sauce options are just drizzled on top. Or possibly ask for the sauce on the side. Everything else was very, very good, with exception to the Bibimbap Kalbi bow. Tasted way too average to warrant the price tag. This is one I would skip next time. Located on the second floor of an open-air complex, Break + Feast is definitely worth seeking out. Make reservations if you can--it fills up quickly. We were lucky to get in early before the rush. Service runs on "island time," so don't expect mainland speed, but that's part of the experience. The modern decor gives the place a fresh, welcoming feel. As for the food--absolutely worth the wait. Everything we had was ono. The brisket benedict is a must-try. The brisket was tender and packed with flavor, and the eggs were cooked perfectly. I also ordered the loco moco, which ranks as the second best I've had (with one spot in Maui still holding my top spot). I tried the green chili and the lilikoi pancakes. If you like a sweet and citrusy flavor, definitely try the pancakes!!! Absolutely the best pancake I've ever had! It's crispy and soft and pairs perfectly with the fruit curd. The green chili was also great. The hasbrowns were crispy on top and soft underneath with lots of delicious meat and cheese and chili. My only recommendation would be getting the egg cooked over medium instead of sunny side up. There is already plenty of sauce from the chili, so you don't need to rely on a runny egg yolk for sauce! You gotta try Break + Feast. What a feast it is! I read over many of the reviews - there were an uncomfortable few that said the service was terrible and they would never come back. So I was leery of this. But most were saying the food was great, and the pictures seem to suggest that as well. Sooo, we decided to meet our local friends (shout out to J&E Lethin) here for lunch this week. Holy cow our plates were AHmazing !! If we were staying longer I'd be back for sure. But first things first: The service we got was top notch. From being greeted as we walked in the door to our table service. Our specific server was super on top of it, very professional and friendly as well. I have no complaints. I ordered the Green Eggs & Pork Belly - it was out of this world. The egg layed happily over its bed of rice and smiled up at you from between the zesty green drizzle and was accompanied by 4 sliced adobo pork belly strips. The rice was the perfect addition to the salty pork and soaked up the yolk as well making your bite absolutely perfect. The pork was crispy and at the same time had a good chew to it. I'm embarrassed to say I ate the whole thing! You've got to try the fresh brewed hibiscus iced tea as well - so bright and refreshing! My mom had the Pigs in a Blanket and though she was planning on saving half for later (doesn't eat much) she ate the whole thing! Haha I was super impressed with how they cooked the hashbrowns. We always order extra crispy anyway, but they were absolutely perfect. Our friends loved their plates as well, I heard no complaints. Great food + even greater company = a beautiful experience. We stopped by before heading out for a day of hiking after finding this spot online and thinking it looked promising. We ordered the eggs Benedict, the Kalbi Bibimbap, and the Mediterranean toast. My boyfriend enjoyed the eggs Benedict, though the portion felt a bit on the smaller side. The Kalbi Bibimbap was tasty, but definitely NOT traditional. We asked for an extra side of gochujang and kimchi veggies, which ended up being an additional $7.50. That would have been totally fine, but it would have been nice to have that mentioned ahead of time since the side of veggies was TINY. The meat was flavorful and overall the dishes were enjoyable, but that surprise charge left a bit of a sour note. It slightly impacted how we felt about the service. Food was excellent as always. I had the Benny with Portuguese sausage and was very good. Service was lacking though today. That is why I deducted 2 stars. Our waiter never came back to ask if we wanted another round of drinks or refill our waters. He did come finally come back around when we were almost done and said he would refill our waters. A popular and tasty stop for weekend brunch. We were looking for a nice local place to grab a meal that wasn't connected to a resort and this looked like a great option. There was about a 25 min wait for a table at 10am on a Saturday, would definitely recommend a reservation if you have a big group or aren't willing to wait. We got a small french press coffee that was plenty for two people. The lilikoi pancakes were the highlight with a generous amount of flavorful curd on top. Great place for a full service brunch in Old Kaloa (upstairs above the juice shop) Lots of hearty dishes to choose from. Green chile skillet was very flavorful with super crispy hash browns and a runny egg on top. Even my avocado toast was really good - I think because the butter and fry the top of the bread before adding the sliced avocado it adds an extra crisp to the bite, which should be done more !! My husband ordered the Moco Loco. He said it was one of the best he has ever had. I do not like breakfast food, so I ordered the hamburger with honey chipotle aioli. Mmmmmmmmmm!! I've had a lot of hamburgers in my life and this definitely ranks as the very best. It was cooked to perfection. That aioli sauce paired perfectly with the burger. Our server was so polite and friendly. The prices were so reasonable. We've eaten all over the island and been gauged. We will definitely eat here again before we leave. Have been at the old Kiowa Roots multiple times in the past and this is the next gen after that one closed. Up to lunch now but the menu is diverse with many things on the old menu on the new one as well. Food quality is great but with only one waiter things can be very slow. Wow--blown away by the flavors here! We arrived around 2 PM for a late lunch, and the only other table was just finishing up. At that time, they were serving the Deep Roots menu, which had everything we wanted to try. The restaurant was clean, modern, and inviting. The fried pork skins and wings were tasty, but the real star was the kalbi--tender, deboned, and sliced for easy eating. The crispy pork belly bowl was decent, and the pulled pork was solid. Service was friendly, but food timing was odd--we waited about 45 minutes, and then everything, including the apps, came out at once. At first looking at the menu the prices were a little shocking as it was more than we planned. The seating was community style or private table. They recommend reservations as it's on the smaller side. It wasn't overly loud but definitely little cold with the air above us. Our waitress was adorable and so helpful, funny and friendly. She definitely made the experience better and was informative and helpful. I ordered a lilikoi pancake for the table and there were zero regrets. The other reviews were not wrong. Also got a mimosa with lilikoi. For breakfast I went with the loco moco crispy ginger chicken with green coconut sauce and an egg and it was delicious. I ordered my egg over medium. I ate the entire thing it was so good. My friend has the pork special and took some home it was so good. My other friend had loco moco patty with peppercorn Demi glaze sauce and wished she had gotten the coconut. Other friend had the bimibop bowl and loved it. We asked for a recommendation in the area and this one was delicious! Everything we got was scrumptious! Between all of us, we ordered the banana pancakes, green chili skillet and the Paniolo sandwich. The crispiness of the hash browns in the skillet and the flavor of the pork and chili was amazing! Had an early morning breakfast after church as it was one of the restaurants that opened at 8am. Heard reviews from my cousin that it was a cute spot and that it gets packed. Luckily we were the 2nd set of people waiting in line. The male host asked if we had a reservation but we didn't so we joked around with him & he let out a big jovial laugh & was able to seat us. Probably the only negative was the wait time for your food, but the quality and taste were worth it. We're big fans of Kiawe Roots so had to explore the offshoot of Break+Feast on this trip over. The pedigree shone through as we enjoyed our evening in their new space in Poipu. The interior was modern, light and furnishing had clean lines that had a minimalist vibe. We were treated very well by the host and waiter that got us sat and drinks in hand efficiently. The menu had a vast selection and some carry over items that required us to order as the reference point. Our table had Caesar and Wedge Salads, Dads Fried Chicken, Prime Rib, Huli Chicken, Opaka Paka, Mushrooms, Mung Bean Mash and finally the pancake trio dessert. Everything was amazingly on point. The Caesar had mini croutons that were a textural delight and the dressing garlicky with a rich balsamic base. The wedge salad was crisp and offset with a hard boiled egg whose yolk was an amazing dark yellow in color. I picked Dads fried chicken and brussel sprouts for my entree and it delivered. The crunchiness of the coating was light, crisp and packed with flavor. On the side was a dipping sauce that brought heat! Opaka Paka was the daily special which was cooked perfectly. While the dish was delicious, the color of the plate sauce could be brighter. Prime rib was cooked to a tender perfection. Two sauces, horseradish and au jus came with the 16 oz serving. Huli Chicken was tender and moist with a charred skin. This was a hefty portion and could have fed two with plenty to spare. Dessert was just amazing and the proper end to a great meal. We had it with a French press coffee. We've committed to coming back each trip. Looking forward to our next meal. read more

Break + Feast is a nice restaurant in the heart of Koloa located on the 2nd floor on the main road. Elevator access and stairs access. After reading mulitple reviews and also reading the history of the business mentioning reservations highly recommended, we made a Saturday reservation at 8:30am. We arrived 10 minutes, checked in, and were seated within a few minutes. Other guests were already seated and enjoying their breakfasts, I would say the restaurant was beginning to fill up. Overall the food quality and taste were excellent. Our server was a nice gentleman, explained the menu well and provided suggestions. Our food came out relatively slow but when it came it was delicious. The reason for the low rating was one of our friends also ordered a macadamia nut pancake but somehow the kitchen missed the order. That being said, our server apologized and said the kitchen is making his pancake and it'll be out soon. Instead of waiting we all decided to eat and enjoy our meals while their hot. Fast forward now that we're almost done with our meals, our waiter came to apologize again and said the kitchen is almost done with the pancake. (How long does a pancake take to make? This was the burning question we all pondered?) Other tables were being served their meals but if there were a mix up in the kitchen and an order was missed, shouldn't that missed order be a priority? Our feeling was YES that missed order should've been a priority and maybe the manager should've stopped by and apologized for the oversight as well? Hospitality customer service 101. Our server offered to place it in a takeout container BUT since we were off to Hanalei for sight-seeing it wouldn't have made much sense, hence our reservations. I hate complaining or bashing a business but with such a high Yelp rating one expects better customer service.
