My brother, who lives on the edge of the park, and I, who lives across the country, had breakfast and coffee two mornings in mid-April. It was quiet but lovely. The breakfasts were very good. On one visit we had the "elder special" which was tasty and very inexpensive. The next visit we chose other breakfast plates. We enjoyed all the options. Coffee was good and I loved my lattes. The ambiance, both inside and out, was lovely. What a wonder park and cozy building. The fireplace was just magnificent. The young man who wore multiple hats at the counter and serving and stoking the fire was incredibly friendly and efficient. We had a wonderful visit. 4 stars for the food and 5 stars for the service and ambiance.

The folks who manage bookings are always friendly and communicative, and make an effort answer all of our questions prior to arrival. Be sure you have a clear understanding of check-in procedure because cell phone service will likely be limited or unavailable. There were no staff available both times I arrived to pick up my keys, so I appreciated having everything squared away ahead of time. Smith Creek Village is a remote area on the edge of Silver Falls State Park. It is a romantic, densely wooded enclave that is often enshrouded in fog during the fall and winter. I've visited in the spring and summer, but staying during the winter months is my favorite because it feels like you are at the edge of the universe. The solitude and relaxation are appreciated after a stressful week of work. Smith Creek Village has a variety of housing options, so be sure to check out their website to see if they have any accomodations that will suit your needs. I've chosed to stay in their one-room cabins each time I've visited. There is a sink and toilet in the cabin, but showers and dressing rooms are a just a quick walk away in a communal bathhouse. The Big Leaf Coffeehouse was a fantastic lodge style restaurant located near the main parking area where guests pick up their welcome packages, however as of October 2024 it seems to have closed "indefinitely." This has happened a number of times through the years, so I can't imagine it's a permanent closure. It really is a necessary amenity because many of the accomodations don't have kitchens. Silver Falls State Park is a beautiful destination not far from Portland. Be sure to check out Silverton, and some of the other attractions in the area if you are visiting from out of town. There is a lot to see!

DISCLAIMER: Yes, yes, I'm a pretty-active Mazama so I am obviously biased!…read more I have had many, many fond memories of staying here. I've taken all the Mazamas climbing classes and now I help with many of them. BUT, FEAR NOT, you don't have to be a Mazama to stay here, not at all (and you might even enjoy the experience MORE if you don't know anything about mountaineering). Think of this as your hostel on the mountain! You can get a bunk here for pretty cheap, probably cheaper than anywhere else in the area. The only catch is that you'll have to hike about 5 minutes to get to the lodge and you have to bring your own bedding. If that sounds too stressful for you, I'm not sure what you're doing on Mt Hood...I hear there are some nice beaches in Florida. There is a huge drying room downstairs, the main room has a rustic fire place, and the top level has all the bunks. You can see the summit of Mt Hood from the rear deck, you can walk to "down town" government camp if you want to experience some rousing night life, historical photos and objects adore the walls, what more could you want? The staff here works hard and is incredibly friendly. You can get a hot dinner or breakfasts and dine with the staff and the other guests; you can even get a sack lunch if you plan to be up on the mountain all day.

The front desk girl agreed to it but the manager moved me to room 119 right across the room where the staff does laundry. The old man working there yells at the top of his voice at other staff all day. I asked him to keep it down and his response is that he's deaf so he has to talk loud. I complained to the front desk and she asked him to stop the noise but he didn't care. All day staff hang outside my room door talking to the point that I could not use voice dictation. There is a stadium behind the hotel where fans are screaming till late in the night. The bedside power outlets don't work. The bedside lights are so dim, it's impossible to read. The AC doesn't cool the room. The TV remote has dead batteries. The coffee station in the lobby always has 3 jugs of coffee and tea bags but no hot water for tea. The hot water at the breakfast coffee station is always cold. When I requested hot water, server went in the back and never came out. I went to work without having morning tea. This is how they treat a diamond elite member. I don't know what they do to others. I will not be back here ever.

We were charged a $25 fee to check in early, but told that it would not be a problem because there was no one staying in our room the night before. (Then why is it not clean?) Check in was great despite the crappy sign in the lobby claiming that they were going to do nothing past the minimum, and you should not complain... We get up to the room and the toilet is filthy and the floor is disgusting, Next day, we didn't stick around for breakfast because if the kitchen is kept the same way the rooms are. Then breakfast will be nasty. Looking back at reviews... 8 years later the ice machine still doesn't work and the place is never cleaned past the sheets on the bed Bed was good and seemed to be the only clean thing in the place. Never saw one employee the entire time we were there other than check in. If you can stay in Gresham that would be better. Place is a pit!!!

We were lucky enough to stay for two nights at The DreamGiver's Inn, and I was so regretful for not making the trip a little longer. This place is truly a dream. The drive from Portland wasn't bad at all (under an hour!) and was really quite beautiful as we made our way. While driving the winding roads filled with fall colors, we spotted the Inn, thanks to its charming shade of red. We checked in around 4pm, and Grace was there to greet us and help us to our room. She was an incredibly welcoming host, and made the experience even more special. We stayed in the "Grace" room, and it was absolutely gorgeous and so relaxing. The room had a huge window seat, and the first couple of hours we were there, we sat there watching the rain and relaxing. Grace had all the makings for hot tea downstairs, which was a perfect match for the moment. We had so many plans that we canceled just so we could sit on that damn window seat and enjoy the view! Mornings at The DreamGivers Inn are the stuff dreams are made of. We usually wandered downstairs around 8:30pm to get some coffee and enjoy one of Grace's baked goods... she made the most amazing banana bread, lemon blueberry scones, and the list goes on. It's a perfect time to wake up slowly and soak in the views of rolling hills, vineyards, and trees. She had breakfast out every morning at 9am, and holy cow, was it amazing. We got to enjoy yogurt parfaits (made with the best local ingredients), egg scrambles, vegetables from the garden, and homemade jams. Can you see why we never wanted to leave? While some would shy away from going to Oregon during the rainy season, the weather ended up being a perfect match for the cozy atmosphere this beautiful sanctuary provided. I cannot recommend this spot enough! Thank you for a couple incredibly relaxing and peaceful days.

It's cozy with solid wood furniture and nice tile floors. Beds are comfortable, although one side is flush against the wall so a little inconvenient to get out in the middle of the night! The bathroom has a huge jetted tub and a cub space heater; water pressure was not as high as I'd like, but was fine. My only other critique is that they don't provide lotion. They have shampoo, conditioner, and body wash in pumps, which is nice in that it cuts down in waste. I also like that the sink is outside the shower/toilet space so it remains accessible to everyone. The room was very clean, also has a microwave, micro fridge, and Keurig type coffee maker. Outside there's a large courtyard with Adirondack chairs, picnic table, and fire pit. I would definitely stay here again.

At what cost?"), and I thought a long time about whether to leave this review. I was quite disappointed with the Lodge at Detroit Lake, because the website is so very misleading. I have traveled around the world and have stayed in all kinds of places, including barns, tents, eco-resorts, and many, many historic properties. I am not a particularly picky traveler. I was looking for a quiet and basically comfy place in a rural setting with a small kitchen and no need for camping gear, close to Breitenbush and local hiking spots. What I got was a very run-down and noisy roadside motel under active construction that didn't resemble the website photos at all. Please note most of the photos seem to be pre-fire (the log cabin rooms in the photo are no longer there). Visible daylight and air crept in through holes in the wall; none of the windows were locked until I thought to check them in the middle of the night; and the bed was wretched (again, not picky, but this thing was in a class by itself). The "community setting" that "promotes front porch sitting and evening gatherings around the campfire" was an empty weed-choked slab of asphalt with a port-o-let across the parking lot. None of the food trucks or restaurants seemed open and the traffic and owners' dog were too noisy to open the windows for fresh air. The check-in process was perfunctory and unwelcoming, and worst of all, someone began using an electric saw incessantly (and unapologetically) directly under my window at 7:30 AM. To charge $166/night ($500 in total) for this experience is appalling--even with west coast pricing and recent inflation, this place isn't worth more than $100/night at the absolute outside. They collect payment up front (and will charge your card even if you don't stay), which should have been a clue. I left after one night and used some Hilton points to stay in Salem for the rest of my trip instead. It was such a disappointment, since I had wanted to get *out* of the city and spend my tourist dollars in the fire-affected area. But, I felt uncomfortable and unsafe. I didn't feel good about leaving my belongings or food in the room, so I thought--why should I sleep here again? I will say the Lodge at Detroit Lake seemed clean and didn't smell of fire damage. While the room, furniture, appliances, and linens were extremely worn and old, everything seemed tidy and clean. The fridge and TV worked, and there was plenty of hot water. If all you need is a place to crash briefly while on the road, you could do worse. But do ask to see the room before agreeing to stay, check the windows before going to sleep, and leave early in the morning, before the construction starts.
