We were visiting family in Montpelier which was about a 10 minute drive to Red Hen Baking. It was so easy to order online and pick up the delicious food. The French Toast was so delightful. We took rolls and bread home to NJ and our family wants us to drive back to get more. It was so good. We had lunch at the Tap House in Montpelier and the bread used on the grilled cheese came from the Red Hen. i've always enjoyed stopping at Red Hen when i'm in the area. the food is very good and they sell mostly local items, which is something i like. I ordered a "custom" sandwich recently, and the woman was very kind and told me that what i wanted was similar to something they had on the menu. she added my extra ingredients and i ended up getting the sandwich for a little cheaper. nice environment. i think you should go at least once. some other reviews are complaining about the food they have for people with specific diet restrictions... i recommend going in if you are able to eat gluten.... read more

A little rough around the edges in terms of decor, this place has some of the best pastries in the area. You can go to Burlington or Montpelier if you'd rather, but this is one place not to miss! The pastries are fresh and I have yet to try something I don't like. They have chocolate snails and pannetone that's to die for! They also carry a small variety of wines and beers, some local. The staff are kind and attentive and there are some tables to sit at as well. Not recommended for groups larger than 3 or 4 to eat in. read more

In a cute little area off the highway, this bakery was calling me! I got an almond milk latte, which was ok (the espresso felt a little harsh to me, but maybe that's the way they make it here?). I think the real gift of coming here isn't the coffee but the baked goods. I had a delightfully chewy and crispy chocolate chip cookie - how is it possible to have the best of both worlds? They definitely mastered it. We also got some delicious wheat bread, and they sliced it for us! Not amazing but not bad either. Croissants were exactly as should be. Cream cheese and blueberry danish could have been sweeter but that may be my taste. This is an adorable little bakery with some really delicious food. We stopped here on a long drive for a mid-morning breakfast. Even for a random Monday (granted it was a long weekend) around 9 or 10am, the place was pretty busy! I had a breakfast sandwich with ham, and picked up a sticky bun and cookie for the road. The breakfast sandwich was amazing - hot and fresh, with generous filling. The bread was clearly high quality. The pastries were also excellent, even a couple of hours after initial purchase (and being squished around my bag for a while). But in addition to the normal selection of soup, salad, and sandwiches, there is also beer, syrup, jam, and breads. All the cottage-industry products you could hope for from an adorable Vermont bakery. I am not one to quickly give five stars to a place I have only eaten at once, but this food is fantastic. You should note, the sandwiches are more like paninis. That being said, get the whole sandwich or two halves. You will want the whole thing. The service is good but direct. The bread also looks good and is a pretty good price. Everything was prepared freshly and quickly. This is a place worth seeking out even if you are anywhere within half-an-hour of here. Red Hen has bread down! I grew up in the area and this bread was a staple in my diet. It's still as good now as it was back in the day!

By far, the best coffee place around. The bread and pastries are of really high quality, the staff is very nice and helpful. If you have children would really appreciate the books and games they have. I've visited the red hen almost every sunday since I moved to Montpelier and have a pleasant experience every time! I take home my bread for the week, waitsfield common and mad river grain are my favorites. read more

You can tell that take pride in what they make, and rightfully so. This cool bakery makes delicious bread, pastries and other baked goods. We ordered a delicious Cyrus Pringle, a delicious wheat bread named after a dead dude who was a wheat botanist, to go with the next day's breakfast. To satisfy my immediate craving I ordered a nice cayenne brownie with a maple latte. Both were fantastic. Additionally, there is a find selection of micro brews and artisan cheeses sold here as well. I have been stopping by The Red Hen since it has opened. The bread products are excellent. Prices here are higher than I like to pay, but I often buy lunch and the occasional baguette here because of the convenience (I work nearby). The indoor counter service (before Covid) was professional (but not overly friendly). The outdoor counter service is poor! The Red Hen should close until it can properly attend to it's customers. Charming. It was super charming and "cute" and "rural." Not the greatest place ever but nice. The proprietors are definitely making an effort. I actually feel bad that I am not giving them more stars now that I think of it...but I wasn't blown away by anything...and quite frankly the "local products" that they sell are a tad overpriced...very close to "tourist" pricing for. I find you can get a lot of the "locally made" cheeses, condiments and what-nots at the local grocery stores at lower prices (I spied a few items in their shop that I've seen at the local co-op in Montpelier at better prices). This place has breads, pastries and some prepared food (soups, salads, sandwiches). The soup is actually reasonably priced and a good value for lunch - generous portion of soup and large hunk of bread! We were there around 1:00pm on a Saturday and they had already run out of a lot of their soup and pastries...kind of a bummer but I'm not really sure how late people here like to do "weekend brunch/lunch." To me 1pm on a weekend was a bit early to calling it quits on your item availability. There was a gentleman performing live music. Nice touch. But it was a bit awkward since it was pretty quiet and there wasn't much of a crowd. Pros: Soup, freshly baked bread, local ingredients, clean bathrooms, near some other interesting shops (a chocolate shop, thrift store, art gallery), live music. Cons: Quiet atmosphere makes for awkward moments when people are not really that into the music being performed, they seem to run out of food kind of early. It was so busy in there for breakfast I asked for a breakfast sandwich with a croissant and they could not do it but they made every accommodation for me to make that happened. I haven't had anything 'bad,' and all of their baked goods are fresh. I am only reviewing now because I've noticed a marked improvement in the demeanor of their counter service. I've been in attendance over the past few years and have experienced a range of disaffected, socially awkward or frankly rude interactions with their counter staff. Sadly this seems to be a relatively new prerequisite of local coffee shops, and I just don't get it.
