The bakery came highly recommended by our Airbnb owner and we happily obliged to try it out. As soon as you open the door, the whiff of delicious goodness that is pastries welcome you with open arms. I am super indecisive when it comes to pastries for I just want to try everything. Our first visit, we each walked out with few things we wanted to try. I had ham and cheese croissant (AHMAZING! Juicy slices of ham between buttery cheesy layers), Almond Croissant (the first taste was the citrusy cream which I found very unusual for an almond croissant but it worked! So so good!), and I spotted these clusters thingy called Chapeau so had to get it as I had never seen anything so cute and it's got strawberry jam (oh my word.. the most delicious thing! The cluster is made up of bits of croissant and strawberry jam to hold them bits together. We're talking crunchy bits on the outside and soft sweetness inside, to die for!). The other gals each got the cheese and chives danish things and they both loved it. The chives and cheese perfectly complement each other and the aroma was some culinary magic level. We also got some cookies to munch on after dinner. The Rosemary and Lemon butter cookies was my favorite. My iced chai was made perfectly just the way it should! I also got a honey cinnamon scone which was baked perfectly and hit the spot! We also got the mini banana cream pie pastry which..holy cow was it delicious! Big enough to split with another person. The freshness of the bananas and the pudding was just an absolute delight. I wish I lived around here so I could get this treat more often! My friend got the Thai iced coffee and she was very disappointed as it just tasted like a regular iced coffee. Birchgrove Baking is the only things on this planet that reminds me Montpelier, VT even exists. Driving home from Stowe, there's not enough Dunkins or Starbucks to my left and right like how it is down in CT. We had to improvise if I want to enjoy my Sunday with a Mocha Latte. I somehow stumbled upon Birchgrove Baking on Yelp and decided to give it a try. This area was practically a ghost town until you get to Birchgrove Baking. It was thriving and there were plenty of people waiting in line. Well now I know why! Their Mocha Latte and Chocolate Chip Cookies were made with love. Absolutely delicious and I always love it when they add that little design in my coffee. But their Chocolate Croissant....that was more than love. It was next level. Set the bar for me in terms of Chocolate Croissants. It was fluffy, chocolaty and oh man what is this delicate, light, flakey, borderline crunchy texture on the outermost layer? NEXT LEVEL STUFF RIGHT THERE. It changed my life. I never in my life thought I would be wanting to go back to Montpelier when I first drove through. Nothing wrong, just nothing for me. We love coming to your place when we are on vacation from Houston. Our son is coming to your area without us this summer and we've already told the people he's going with that they ALL have to go. They are looking forward to it! The best pastries and coffee we've had. We travel often in the states and it's the best! The space is charming and the staff is so kind. My son has a severe nut allergy (peanuts, pistachio, cashew, macadamia nut) and the staff is always so great about pointing out what is good to go, and things he should stay away from. We saw the line out of the door while driving through town and decided at the last second to pull over and stop in. We couldn't be happier that we did! This place is such a gem. The interior was beautiful, the line moved quickly, and they replenished pastries that sold out. The malted cardamom latte was something I've never had and was delicious. We also got the maple lattes which were perfectly sweet. It was a Sunday so there were homemade donuts, they were still fresh and warm. We got the maple, browned butter and chocolate sugar. Wow, what a gem! We randomly stopped by on our way out of town and couldn't be happier. There's street parking in front of the store but a lot of people were dropping by Monday morning! They kept bringing out small plates of new pastries as we waited in the line. There was some lovely drink specials for fall so I ordered the buttered brown sugar latte. It was fantastic! Gently sweetened and smooth. We also ordered the everything croissant, blueberry croissant, passion fruit croissant pastry (which in our opinion is their version of a cronut though they never called it that), banana bread, and pumpkin tea cake. All of it was great! I especially loved the passion fruit croissant pastry because it had an amazing flavor (but definitely on the dessert side rather than morning pastry side). Both everything and blueberry croissant had some filling and were flaky. The everything had cream cheese inside! The banana bread was soft and had a rich taste to it, and the pumpkin tea cake was surprisingly soft inside with a nice pumpkin flavor! If you ever been to Birchgrove you know the treats are sweet, but the counter staff is far less so!!! But this lack of a welcoming atmosphere reached a new low today - I am writing to share what happened. A little background first... I have been a patron of this business from day one. Bought as many things as possible during the pandemic to support them, including two special order cakes for birthdays for our little family even though the smallest one feeds around 12 people. Apparently this customer loyalty means nothing to John, the owner, nor does helping out physically challenged people... I am currently disabled from a terrible injury and have a metal device surgically applied to my leg and so I can't wear a shoe on this foot (just a slipper) and this makes getting around in winter in Vermont is pretty difficult. But sometimes you just need a little pick me up.... Like I recently craved from Birchgrove. Not wanting to venture out if they didn't have a specific confection of choice - I called ahead to see if they had what I hoped for which they did! I shared my particular roadblock and asked to have the dessert put aside, but was told by John that they don't do this under ANY circumstances. It didn't matter to him that getting around is a bigger hurdle for me - he was completely unsympathetic regarding this and the challenges it poses. Still wanting my treat, I moved as quickly as possible to get to the store only to find what I had hoped to purchase was bought literally minutes before I arrived. I was super disappointed as getting there was quite challenging. I was not obtuse regarding my feelings about how this all went down - the counter staff responded by not even looking at me - shunning me and rudely asking me to step away from the counter. What would it have taken to help out someone who is disabled? The real kicker is I had also just special ordered cupcakes the night before for Valentine's Day. Being treated so badly at the store, I couldn't let this order stand. When I called to cancel I again got John on the phone and reiterated my disappointment in how I was treated. He was again unapologetic stating said that he "treats everyone the same". But ya know, not everybody is the same. Some of us need help and accommodating - this idea and any compassion for physical challenges is not a value of this business. And so I am NEVER buying ANYTHING from Birchgrove again as their "everybody is the same" policy flies in the face of equity for those who are not able bodied. I remain completely gob smacked by this incident and Birchgrove's lack decency... totally shameful... read more

Their coffee specials always offer something delicious! Pastries rotate daily with some favorites appearing every day. I've really enjoyed every one of their baked goods I have tried. I come to Vermont twice a year for residency and always have to make at least one stop at Birchgrove Baking. They have amazing mini cakes and pastries, that never disappoint. I've had smores tarts, pumpkin tarts, caramel bars, and my favorite...coconut cake. If you like coconut cake, you must try Birchgrove's personal sized coconut cake. It's amazing, never dry and just the right level of sweetness. Birchgrove also does excellent espresso drinks including soy lattes and tons of flavored drinks. If coffee isn't your thing, try one of the many hot teas. I see new items all the time and love the variety of each cake. Definitely a must visit if you're passing in the Montpelier area. Our yearly trip to Vermont is always fun. Montpelier is our favorite place to visit. Our Aunt always throws a birthday party for the kids and Birchgrove is always a part of the celebration. Last year's creation, a pyramid was awesome! We did not want to eat it! The cake was moist and delicious. This year, the theme is the Hobbit and the cake, Smaug is truly the center of attention! I haven't tried their homemade ice cream yet but I've got a feeling it's criminally good. Way to go creating such an excellent niche in this town (and not trying to be Gesine II who had awfully big shoes). Why four stars instead of five? One nit picky caveat: Twice I have been there before closing and the staff has closed before the listed closing time. Once time a staff member literally closed the door and locked it in my face 7 minutes before they actually closed. Another employee or possibly the owner came by and very sweetly rectified the situation and we were given our coffee in a most peaceful and kind manner. BUT then I watched the same employee do this to someone else on another day. I just thought it was a bit weird. Best scone I've ever had. My sister and I both got the savory scones this morning, and were amazed with how much we enjoyed them. The flavor was cheesy and cracked peppery, but not overwhelming, and the texture was everything a scone could hope to be. Denser than a biscuit but not dry and brittle, as so many scones are. We literally ate every crumb. Our coffees were great, the atmosphere inviting, and the service friendly. We couldn't have asked for more. read more
