We recently held both our wedding ceremony and reception at the Red Oak Room. (I will rate that process separately on the Cantigny Golf page) When we toured Cantigny, we immediately loved the red oak room. This location is nice because the patio connects right to the reception area. I found that helpful for guests so they didn't have to drive all over the place. We had the ceremony on the outdoor patio. We had about 100 total guests, and the room was spacious for that. Staff decorated the room to our liking. There is a TV available if you have pictures to display, and plenty of table space to hold cards, gifts, etc. The only downfall is that bathrooms upstairs are also shared with golfers. Bridal Party was able to use bridal suite downstairs. Beautiful venue! read more

I've been here for a couple of memorial services and a wedding reception on another occasion. It's expensive but beautiful, the view in any direction is of one of the nicest most elite golf courses in the Midwest. The food is good, parking is easy, but really the space is incomparable. If money isn't a real object, you can't do better for a special event. I could never afford to host here though. read more

We were invited to join extended family for brunch today at Cantigny's clubhouse restaurant, Red Oak Room. I've never been here before- Cantigny nor the restaurant. The grounds are beautiful. The restaurant was fine, just very, very crowded with loads of kids everywhere, tightly packed tables, quite loud, and servers running to keep up. We had 11:00 reservations, but had to wait another 15 minutes for a table. I'm giving it 4 stars as the food was excellent, lots of vegetarian options, fresh omelette station, and sooooo many fresh berries (raspberry, strawberry, blueberry AND blackberries!) that I think I ate $18 worth of berries alone. Bread pudding, Quattro Formaggi pasta, and roasted potatoes also rocked. $18 for adults, $11 for children 4-11, I think. So that's a really good deal for a brunch in the Chicago area! Full bar. Really nice restrooms and lounge area. Free parking. read more

Cantigny is a beautiful and expansive park in Wheaton, which includes a very nice golf course, with a pro shop and a clubhouse restaurant called the Red Oak Room. The only time I have visited this establishment was for my niece's wedding reception two years ago. The private banquet/event space and the grounds around it are stunning. But the food and service was even better. I think it was the best wedding reception I've ever been to. With around 150 people, the space was laid out with room to spare so it felt luxurious and not at all cramped. There was a bar with excellent bartenders, room for the dance floor to remain empty so no tables had to be removed after dinner. And the food! Guests had a choice from 3 entrees - filet mignon, salmon and chicken. Not easy to offer 3 different meals and get them all done perfectly. Both a soup course and salad were served (after the cocktail hour which had a variety of tray-passed hors d'oeuvres). The filet was at least 7 ozs of pure perfection with accompanying potato and veg. Champagne was poured for a toast and a choice of red or white wine was served throughout dinner. A wonderful dessert buffet was served in addition to the wedding cake. The service was also perfection capped off with coffee service with really delicious coffee. The wait staff was very pleasant and professional and made sure the dining experience was stellar for each and every guest. A great DJ had the crowd dancing for hours and later in the night, more food - Chicago pizza and Italian beef sandwiches with all the fixings for anyone who wasn't still stuffed from dinner and served with to go boxes to take some with you if you were still too full. It was a very nice venue with wonderful food and service - it was perfect in every way! read more

We had Sunday brunch at the Red Oak Room at Cantigny and enjoyed our meal and experience. If you've never been before, here's a tip: Red Oak Room is at the golf course, not the normal Cantigny grounds. With that, it's safe to assume that it is a bit upscale. I don't think you have to come in "Sunday's best" but you should certainly look presentable. Anyway, it's a big space with plenty of tables and ability to accommodate any size group you have. Most tables are located along the wall/windows and provide for an enjoyable view of the surrounding golf course. If you're lucky, you can snag a table near the pond... The buffet is set up along the opposite wall and easy to get to - additionally, given the size of the room it never gets too packed and we never really had to "wait in line" for any of the food. The food was pretty tasty (buffets are always tough) and they had a very nice assortment of the breakfast standards: eggs, breakfast meats, pancakes/waffles, pudding, pastries, fresh fruit. They also had a carving station and a made-to-order omelet station. For the price, what you get is pretty solid. We were content and left with full stomachs. The only think I'd like to see improve would be the service. The cooks were Johnny-on-the-spot with making sure there was enough food in all the warming trays but the "waiters" were tough to wave down. I am suspecting they were a bit short-handed the day we went but be sure to get everything you need when you (finally) get a visit from your person. The price was right (for the food and ambiance) and the staff attentiveness was tolerable. It was a nice meal and one we'd do again... after some time, however. I chose this location for a birthday brunch. It seemed affordable and had decent reviews. I was able to book a table easily a few weeks in advance for a large party. We were promptly seated, our table had some lovely scenic views of a lake and the golf course! Kids enjoyed seeing the wildlife (we spotted ducks, turtles, fish). It kept them busy throughout the brunch. They also enjoyed the outdoor balcony. It wasn't used for brunch the day we visited -- but I imagine it would be pretty lovely in the spring and summer. We were able to visit it and enjoy some fresh air though. The food was okay. Comparable to many golf courses or places like villa Olivia. They had a decent but very basic spread for brunch. Menu consisted of: Scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, penne noodles, bread pudding, a make your own omelette station, a few fruits, a very dried French toast, eggs Benedict, a yogurt station, and a few desserts like donut holes and danishes. Some stuff was cold but I noticed that staff would switch out dishes fairly quickly to avoid this. They also were constantly refilling coffee and water glasses and taking plates. Drinks were served to you directly. If you wanted anything other than water your server would bring it to you! They had sangria,mimosas, and bellinis and all sorts of brunch drinks. Around $7-$8 a glass. Nice strong drinks! The birthday girl got an ice cream with a candle which they lit for us and let us sing happy birthday. It was a nice bonus! I struggled with how to rank the Red Oak Room. I was there for the breakfast buffet with a group. The setting is lovely - there's a beautiful view of the lake at the golf course. The breakfast buffet is exactly as promised on their website. It has a little more selection than you'll get at a nice hotel - there's bread pudding and carved ham in addition to the usual cereals, fruit, biscuits/gravy, muffins, etc. and the hash browns, while pretty flavorless, included bits of onion and other vegetable. There's an omelet station and waffles. The omelet station offers more choices than one would usually get - notably, sun-dried tomatoes and fresh spinach are options. Ask for your omelet well-done - mine was underdone, with liquid egg in the middle, and so was someone else's in the group. The baked goods appeared to include some of the same pre-made options (powdered donuts, mini-muffins) you'd get at a Holiday Inn, which I found disappointing. Of course, you can't get a Bloody Mary or mimosas at a Holiday Inn. Price for the buffet is $13.95 plus drinks. I got an orange juice, which was nothing remarkable. Service was OK - it's a buffet and we were there starting at noon for a buffet which stops seating at 12:30. For a vegetarian, unless you're here with a group, don't bother. If the omelet station had produced a properly cooked omelet, this would be a solid three stars. Not a 5 Star Venue in My Opinion My son had his wedding there and unfortunately it rained that day. They still charged them 2500 for a "Rose Garden Ceremony" that wound up taking place on a open-air, covered back porch. As it was in the 30's, needless to say people were freezing (you could see their breath) despite their attempts at "heating" the space. I had called to request a 1,000 refund as there were other issues that day as well, and they were totally unwilling to negotiate. Very poor customer service. Would not recommend. read more

We returned to the Red Oak room for the Sunday brunch and thought it was very good as well as a good value. Mind you, it's not a brunch with dozens of items. But...t has something for everyone and everything I ate was very good. Standouts were the bread pudding and the veggie frittata. The Douwe Egbert coffee was excellent. Our server, Emily, was very attentive and constantly refilling our water and coffee. At $16 per person, I think this is a solid value. I would much rather enjoy a buffet with a dozen dishes that are prepared with care than an extravaganza where food sits for hours. I booked this place for my wedding reception because my wife and I wanted our ceremony at Cantigny gardens (which I would give 4 stars and definitely recommend despite the constantly awol planner), and this package allowed a solid backup site for our ceremony if the weather was bad (fortunately we had good weather). General comments: It was a good sized venue for 100 people. Hotels near I88 in Naperville/Warrenville are not far for out-of-town guests. None of my guests used the outdoor patio even though the weather was perfect. There is plenty of parking. There is no PA system, the DJ must provide it. The good: Price is competitive (def not "cheap," we are talking about a wedding here). It was cheaper than Morton Arboretum, which is probably its main competitor for outdoor venues in this price range. They were transparent with how 7.25% would be added to our bill for tax and 20% for gratuity. The drinks were surprisingly good. Surprisingly because I went with the cheapest drink package, plus $2/person more for an expanded beer menu. In addition to the beer, the cocktails were tasty and the bartender was efficient and professional. I probably would have given this place two stars if it weren't for the drinks and bartender. The chicken carbonera was also better than I expected. But perhaps my expectations were just low (see below). I was a tad upset they took my food away while I left my table to greet some guests (I wanted to finish it, dammit!) The bad: I was expecting a little more decor work than was provided by the planner. They provided a choice of tablecloth color (white or ivory i believe) but that was about it. A family friend (not Red Oak Room or Cantigny) did 90% of our decorating. The planner should have been more transparent about what they would or would not provide from the beginning. Communicating with the planner was challenging and is my biggest reason for not giving a higher rating. Emails and voicemails consistently went weeks without a reply, even after multiple attempts. For example, it took more than a month for me to get my rehearsal time planned because the staff was always unavailable and would never return my calls. If I asked three questions in an email, I would get an answer to two of them with the third completely ignored. This happened multiple times - almost to the point of becoming comical. Even paying for the damn thing was a struggle which required multiple emails and calls until I was finally able to get ahold of them. Overall, the vibe I got from the planning staff was "We do this every weekend and it's always oh so awesome and we get paid for it, therefore there is no need to go above and beyond and oh yea I'll just get back to my client whenever I feel like it- their questions don't really matter because I'm going to do exactly what I do every week anyway." I'm aware that this is not the Four Seasons, but still... if I'm paying someone $10k I expect a minimum degree of punctuality and professionalism. The reception got "taken care of" in the end but the planner definitely tested my patience over the months leading up to the the big day. The logistics of choosing a date, tasting appointment, menu, guest list and basic decorations should not have been as goddamn aggravating as it was. Despite my worries, I had an awesome time. I don't have any regrets. I'm willing to concede that a little stress is an inevitable part of wedding planning, but I believe the planning staff here exceeded a reasonable level. By no means am I shouting "stay away from this place," but 5 months after my wedding I believe the only value in this place for a wedding reception is it provides an inclement weather backup for a ceremony at Cantigny Gardens. In other words, had I known the weather would be perfect and that the planning process would be as annoying as it was, I would not have chosen Red Oak Room for my reception. I definitely would choose a ceremony at Rose Garden again though. TL;DR had a wedding reception here. was a grand 'ol time in the end but the planning staff was super aggravating. to me the only reason to have a wedding reception here is it also provides a backup in case the weather is bad for a garden ceremony read more

I am currently planning a wedding reception at the Red Oak Room and so far I have been extremely impressed with the venue, and the staff, save a minor hiccup here or there. I met with Patti, a food and drink manager who, despite not being the main event manager, was extremely knowledgeable, and helpful. She took a lot of time breaking down options, pricing, and weighing the pros and cons of each package with my mom and I. She did not seem alarmed at all when we informed her that the wedding was happening in 7 weeks - which was a welcome non reaction. I have found Cantigny to be competitively priced, and in my opinion offers a beautiful space for a wedding reception that does not feel like a reception hall - which I can't stand. I am pretty upset to write this review as I am looking into this venue for a potential wedding reception site. My boyfriend/soon to be fiance, family and I arrived at noon for brunch and no one was there to greet us or seat us. I had to ask another patron about what we were supposed to do, and after five minutes had passed, the PATRON had to flag down a server to find us someone. Turns out the hostess was hiding out in the back office even though brunch hours are clearly until 12:30 pm. The hostess did not apologize nor did she do anything to make us feel special. She took her time in setting the table for us so that we were finally seated around 12:15 pm. Again, brunch ended at 12:30 pm. Later on as I was taking pictures of the venue, I caught the hostess sitting at the bar in the back and not doing anything. I have to commend the server who flagged the hostess down who treated us respectfully. He promptly refilled our waters and my coffee. The food was not bad but I was hoping for more in light of the price. My favorite was the biscuits and gravy. Other offerings were fruit, mini muffins, pancakes, belgian waffles, hand-carved ham, made to order omelettes, bread pudding, fritattas and eggs benedict. I love this joint. It is like a refined country club but without the snobs and membership requirement. The chef always does a nice job. From Mothers Day brunch to the post golf burger, always A++ ! The servers are not adequately trained like a refund country club though. They seem to enjoy themselves. Check their phones, joke and laugh together, and linger. I was always taught "if you have time to lean you have time to clean". I see plenty of opportunity for improved cleanliness and attention to detail. Cantigny Golf is a fabulous place. On the expensive side, But it is tough to compete against Tax Payer supported places like Arrowhead and Village Links Reserve 22. We organized our daughter's first birthday party at Cantigny Red Oak room back in November 2014. From the initial visit when we met with Karen and went over the various options, she was extremely accommodating and helpful. Karen went out of her way to make sure that everything was taken care of right from the menu, the decoration, seating arrangement and set up for kids' games. On the day of the event, things could not have gone better. Our guests had a good time both kids and adults, the food (buffet) was outstanding, the sundae bar was a hit among both kids and adults. Our guests were raving about the tilapia and rice pilaf as well as the NY Strip loin. Overall it was a very important day for us, all the staff at Cantigny made us feel special and ensured that it was memorable for us and our guests. Karen was the difference between the Red Oak room and other places we looked around. She is an excellent planner, listens well, makes suggestions and made sure that we didn't get overwhelmed in the process. She was very creative in working with us to balance the budget across, food, cake and the premium open bar. My husband and I live in the city and wanted to get married there, but couldn't afford the prices. I was really bummed until we visited Cantigny. It was absolutely beautiful and reasonably priced. We chose to have the ceremony at the park in the rose garden and the reception at the Red Oak Room at the golf course. Unfortunately, mother nature had other plans. We had to decide hours before the ceremony whether to move it inside due to looming rain clouds. The coordinator, Karen, was really helpful and steered us toward the right decision. We didn't have time to get everything to the patio at the Red Oak Room, but we were able to move it inside in the visitors center at the park. I had never spent much time in the visitors center and was a little concerned about what it would look like. Fortunately, it was perfect. The room was decorated very nicely and the coordinator there (Megan, who I had never met) worked tirelessly to make everything happen. We were very happy with how everything turned out. Megan was also really helpful in taking care of a crying flower girl. The reception was equally great. Although it was raining, we had great views of the golf course, wonderful covered patio, and a beautiful room. I probably asked Karen a million questions over the many months of planning and she was very patient and responsive. Her answer to everything was "we'll make it happen." It really took a lot of stress away. I attended the once a year food tasting and wasn't very impressed. It tasted like generic wedding food. Again, Cantigny came through. The food was fantastic. We got rave reviews from the guests - everything from the soup to the 10:30pm sundae bar was a hit. I would also like to thank the staff. They were courteous, helpful, professional, and a pleasure to work with. We would also like to thank Pete the bartender for making us some seriously great margaritas for the night. C.R. found this place as a Brunch destination on our trip to Kane County. The setting is beautiful. The dining hall is made up of dark wood, and there was golf memorabilia donning the walls. The restaurant overlooks a couple of holes on the Golf course. All of this leads to a really nice atmosphere for a meal. I hate to say it, but the Brunch was pretty mediocre. They offered your normal brunch staples like Bacon, Sausage, Potato's and fresh fruit. All of these were ok. The Biscuit's and gravy were really bland. I guess I spent too much time in the south and have become a biscuits and gravy snob. The service was good and the setting was elegant, but they food really need to be improved. If I'm ever in the area or if I play the course, I would give it a shot again. I can't really complain, $14.00 is not a lot of money to pay to get your grub on, but considering the beautiful setting, the food was disappointing. read more

After reading how far in advance reservations are required for the Father's Day brunch, and reviewing the menu listed online, I decided that the Red Oak Room would be an ideal spot to take my husband and daughter for a nice meal on Father's Day. My husband has enjoyed golfing at Cantigny, so I thought he'd enjoy dining there as well. The setting was nice, and we had a table at the window overlooking the water fountain (this was worth the 1 star given). The experience went downhill fast from there. Immediately after being seated, a server approached and asked what we would like to drink. I asked for just a minute to look at our options, and she turned on her heel without a smile or saying a word. A little ruder than normal, I thought at the time. We each decided to just have lemonade which was refilled somewhat regularly but was consistently warm. Our plates would be taken before we were finished, along with our silverware which was never replenished - fortunately our original setting came with both a salad and dinner fork. Service was just not friendly, and they didn't have to do anything other than occasionally refill a glass or take a partially eaten plate away. When we received the bill that automatically added 15% gratuity - for a party of 2 (my daughter is only 1 year old and wasn't served anything), and for a buffet which apparently required no real interaction between us and the servers - we could see why they didn't need to be friendly or helpful at all. I don't see the need to add gratuity to the bill in that situation. Perhaps better service would have improved our overall thought of the meal. Now for the food. They offered three seatings for the day, and we were at the 3rd and final seating. We were there a couple minutes early, and I had expected that the food would be fresh for each seating. There is no way that was the case. Everything had a sort of film over it, like what you would expect late in the afternoon at a hospital cafeteria. The shrimp cocktail was peel and eat - and not de-veined - which was not at all what I expected at the price charged per person. The sushi was worse than what I'd find at a discount chain grocery store - seriously. The whole thing reminded us both of a low-end Las Vegas hotel buffet. Items that should have been cold were room temperature. Items that should have been hot were room temperature. Plus, there were things listed on the menu online that they must have run out of by our sitting because they were nowhere to be found. The entire experience was such a huge disappointment. We've thrown away $100 before, and unfortunately probably will again, but it certainly never feels good when it happens and that's the feeling we got today after this less than mediocre dining experience. read more

The view is spectacular. The tables elegant. The service is attentive. But this is not a "cooked" breakfast. It is a "heated" breakfast. I couldn't find hardly anything that didn't come from a can or freezer bag from a supplier like Sexton or Edward Don. The fruit was freshly cut but lacked anything like ripe flavor except for the pineapple. Made-to-order omelets are available and the only option I found acceptable. So $17 for Eggo waffles and freezer biscuits and gravy? You'll find much better flavor, and freshly cooked at that, at any of the local restaurants. read more

There was not one vegetable or salad bar for those who didn't want the carb/protein heavy offerings, but there were a few cut melons, berries and grapes. The "dessert" section didn't have even 1 homemade option. It all looked like (and tasted like) cheap ready-made pastries from Entenmann's, like 3 flavored donut holes, dry cookies, and cheap ready made danish dumped from the box onto a plate. There was a friendly young man carving the prime rib, but it was so fatty it wasn't worth the fight to try to enjoy it. My husband and I selected The Red Oak Room at Cantigny Golf Club for our rehearsal dinner, and let us tell you, it was incredible!! We had a larger rehearsal dinner with a lot of out of town guests and the night was a hit. We wanted a space with both outdoor and indoor space and The Red Oak Room was perfect. The views of the golf course are stunning and the string lights on the patio made it feel like an awesome summer party. We had food served buffett style (Italian theme and then mini chicago hotdogs and beef sandwiches) and they were a hit! On top of the venue being spectacular, our event coordinator, Taylor, was top knotch. Taylor was so professional, kind and responsive and made the night better than we had imagined! I've just had my wedding here. The Cantigny Gardens is just beautiful and allows so much opportunity to capture wonderful pictures. We were fortunate to have good weather for our garden ceremony which was very romantic. The Red Oak Room has a great view of the golf grounds which gave the room an open, nature-like feeling. The patio was a great addition for those who want to smoke cigarettes or get some fresh air. They have a nice little lounge when you first walk in, which the cocktail hour was served in. The food wasn't bad considering it was a buffet and banquet-like food. The managers even accommodated us by giving us a huge discount on the garden we wanted but wasn't in our budget, which was very nice! Overall in the end, it was a good experience. So why the 3 stars? Well to me, customer service is very important. The manager and assistant banquet managers were very hard to get a hold of which was very upsetting. I would literally have to call 10x a day to get a hold of someone, on top of emailing both managers. Sometimes they returned my calls at the end of the day, sometimes the following. For some people it's not a big deal but I was planning a wedding in 2 weeks and time was very crucial. They did not help with the nervousness I've felt. Don't get me wrong, they were very nice people at Cantigny. But the lack of customer service compelled me to write this review despite the good things. Don't let me discourage you though, this place is a beautiful venue to hold a wedding and affordable, just be patient with the managers. read more

My daughter's wedding reception was here. Some of the food was great, some not so much. The decor was beautiful. There are lots of rules and the waitstaff cut up and served the entire wedding cake, without saving the top tier - as is customary - for the bride and groom. We just had our wedding reception at the Red Oak Room at Cantigny. The event went smoothly, the food was wonderful, and the space was beautiful. The best part, however, was working with the event coordinator, Karen Elmore. She is organized, friendly, flexible, dependable, and creative. She took our ideas and ran with them. My husband and I came here for Sunday brunch. The food and price were both great and the service was wonderful, too. Very attentive staff. The biggest flaw was the country music playing. My husband and I both found it very odd for the setting and it seemed to not go at all with the atmosphere. Change the music to classical, jazz, etc and it would be a much nicer Sunday morning experience. read more
