I was sad when it closed, but I'm super stoked to see this place thriving just as well as the Hoka Hoka Sushi location in Redondo!! Hoka Hoka Express's menu is different. It has a mix of onigiri, tempura, fruit/milk teas made and bottled in-house - but mostly bowls with fish and a base of rice and/or salad. If I remember correctly, you can even ask for half rice and half salad. These three bowls are my personal favorite: - Salmon - Eel & Avocado - 811 Very simple; very clean and fresh ingredients. Maybe I'll buy a combo by adding tempura and a milk tea the next time I visit. They have a bunch of other things in store too. Bags, stickers, ramen, all kinds of knick knacks that I haven't been able to explore nor purchase just yet. Overall, Hoka Hoka Express is a solid place to grab a filling, reasonably priced meal. I had no idea what to expect from the outside, but when I walked in, I was totally drawn in by all the really cute Asian merch they have plus they have a ton of convenience foods at the register. But once you browse the menu, they have amazing options! I went with the brussels sprouts to start and the Hawaiian Hoka Craft bowl. It was a perfect portion and the brussels sprouts were lighted flaking and just fit right in to all the empty spaces in my tummy. I really loved all the different textures and flavors. I'm starting to see the quality decline from the TikTok hype that it received a few months ago. The woman owner is not friendliest. The quality of the salmon has changed or they're just keeping it longer, so it's not as fresh. The real "crab meat" in the Onigiri has decreased, you barely get any meat. Also, they did give more salmon months ago, and that has also decreased. I get inflation, but it's just sad that consistency is always a factor with these type of establishments. My family and I were coming consistently on a weekly basis. We have decided that this will be our last visit for a while. It's a cute restaurant with modern decor and lots of cat themed merchandise. I got the salmon hand roll kit and it came with a small bit of salmon sashimi, some seaweed, avocado, seaweed salad, rice, and cucumber salad. I liked being able to roll my own hand rolls, but I didn't find the quality of the salmon that fresh. The avocado also had some brown spots on it. In search of a Japanese restaurant that offered a menu loaded with options and was both fast and affordable, we lucked out when we discovered Hoka Hoka Express. This place is everything Japanese wrapped all into one - food, beverages (leaded & unleaded), snacks, porcelain teacups, tote bags, cute collectibles, you name it! I can't say I've ever been to a restaurant that offered a menu item like the Normandie - salmon, spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, spicy ponzu, spicy mayo and served over your choice of base. I've always loved coming here and have been a regular because I genuinely enjoy the food and the experience. Unfortunately, my most recent visit left a really bad impression. I came in around 8:30 PM, only to be turned away by an older woman working behind the cashier who said, "No more orders, we are so busy!!," even though the posted closing time was 9 PM. I understand that restaurants can get busy and may have certain circumstances that affect service, but the way I was spoken to felt unnecessarily rude and dismissive. It's especially disappointing because I really enjoy this place and have always been happy to come back. Unfortunately, after this experience, I don't think I'll be returning. Wish I had known about this place sooner! Very cute decor, and good amount of seating to hang out with friends. Saw maybe three or four separate customers come in as I waited. Got a classic bowl combo consisting of a salmon bowl + takoyaki ($16.50), and added on a black sesame milk tea ($4) and a Shin Ramen cup noodle ($2), for a total of $22.50. To be honest I got the cup noodle to try out the ramen machine I saw in other reviews but I swear I didn't see it on the counter unfortunately. Nevertheless the food was delicious! Salmon bowl comes with rice/salad (I opted for just rice), salmon poke, pickled cucumber, and a generous amount of avocado. If you want other toppings you can add them on for an additional cost but honestly I think the cucumber and avocado are enough. Rice was hearty (like a brown rice) and pre-seasoned (with vinegar I think?) so personally didn't need any additional sauces. They gave a cute packet of ginger, wasabi, soy sauce, and to my surprise a hard coffee candy. Seems like a small detail but that amount of care definitely left a good impression. Was so excited to see takoyaki as a inclusion since most places tend to leave it as an a la carte item. Takoyaki was super hot. Wanted to dig in right away but had to hold off for a while so I wouldn't burn my tongue. Came with a tangy dipping sauce. Good amount of octopus. Alternatively you can get tempura, which is also a great combo option and what I'll try next time I eat from here. Also I was beyond excited to see that they offered black sesame milk tea because it's pretty hard to find. Theirs is so GOOD - smooth, nutty, and just the right amount of sweetness! They were super thoughtful and gave me a separate cup of ice on the side. The bottle it comes in is already handy so I was quite surprised and touched by the cup of ice. And the milk tea was affordable, what more can you ask for? Lastly service was quick and kind. Came on a Tuesday around 1pm and they got my order ready in about 5-10 minutes. They even brought it out to the table I was sitting at, instead of just shouting out my name, despite me ordering at the kiosk to-go. **July 2025: Sunday Afternoon Review** My friend and I were in the Torrance area and we wanted to grab something quick and healthy. Well.. I wanted something quick and healthy and my friend obliged lol. I found this little hole in the wall through Yelp and it was very conveniently located to our last destination. The shop is located in a small shopping plaza and they had a steady flow of customers even though we came around 2pm. They have several different rice bowl options as well as tempura and homemade drinks. I picked up the honeydew oat milk tea as well as a salmon sashimi bowl combo (w/ a soft shell crab) and boy everything reminded me of when I visited Japan. Everything came out quickly and everything was delicious. The salmon sashimi was fresh and the rice that they used was sushi rice and had a vinegary/soy sauce flavor which contrasted the salon nicely. It also came with a salad and avocado. The honeydew oat milk was also fantastic. It definitely tasted like honeydew and it was very creamy. Would definitely get that again! Honestly, if I lived closer I probably would come here regularly. For a small fast-food-like restaurant, it sure has a great menu of a variety of slightly Americanized, but still relatively authentic Japanese food. And their prices were great! For about $15 you could have a decent meal. Add a few dollars and you could have something that you would spend close to $50 in a nice Japanese restaurant. We ordered the Cali bowl, which came with two scoops of imitation crab salad, and a small plate of tempura of your choice-- from vegetable, shrimp, to chicken. We also ordered the spicy bowl, which came with two scoops of spicy tuna and a small plate of tempura of your choice. Both were decent, I wouldn't say they are amazing but for $15 you get rice vegetable, and a good portion of protein. The most interesting thing about the store is they also sell a variety of sundries, from toys to T-shirts to decorative Japanese household items. And they have a large selection of store made drinks, including nice Matcha. This is what gives you that " in a small town in Japan" type of experience. So while you're waiting for your food, which is made to order, you could browse the various merchandise in the shop and have perhaps an interesting time. The restaurant, like most restaurants in Japan, is exceptionally clean! This, to me, is another part of that Japanese experience. So for $15-$20, you get a decent meal plus a nice break from the busy Southern California life without having to spend hundreds of dollars and a long flight to Japan! Fresh, clean and tasty. This visit I got the Salmon Bowl with 1/2 rice & salad then added the Tempura Shitake Mushrooms $18.18. The lady that takes the order is the owner as well and she does a good job in explaining your choices when you order. I would recommend ordering ahead of time because it could be a bit of a wait when it gets busy. I'm not a big fan of their seatings as it's hard wood and I prefer cushions so we usually take it to go and eat it at home.
