Dinning at Red Rooster Overtown was such a delight. We are familiar with the atmosphere and food from the New York location and I must say the Miami location did not disappoint. Our reservation was at 8.30 pm and we were quickly seated before 9pm outdoor. The vibes inside the restaurant was very energetic, every table was grooving to the beautiful sounds playing in the restaurant. For drinks we had the Ole Uncle Duke (old fashion ) it was a smooth balance of everything an old fashion should be. Very well made! For dinner our table had a combination of food and all options was rated 10/10 across the table. We had The sour pig ribs, Conch Ink-Stained Tagliatelle, Fried Yard Bird, Charred Suya Octopus and Jerk sweet potato. It was easily the best dinning experience we had since covid. I have been to Red Rooster Overtown several times since it has been open. Every time I have gone, the service has been great. Last month, however, was the worst experience I have EVER had in any restaurant. Here's what happened... we ordered the fired chicken. When the orders arrived, the chicken was clearly burned. We've ordered this before so we were all familiar and used to the golden brown color of the chicken. When we alerted our waiter, he took the plates away and didn't say anything, nor did he come back. After waiting about 40 minutes one of the guests at our table flagged the waiter down and inquired about our orders that we assumed were being remade. He replied with, "the kitchen is closed." He never let us know that before and never came back to check on the table. Later we called for, Tyrese, the manager. He echoed the waiter's response, "the kitchen is closed." He did not accommodate us with anything to make the problem right and he even got irate with use when we questioned us about what he could do or how he could make things right. He then walked away and never came back. We sat there for about 45 more minutes wondering what was going on. No one checked on us. No one gave us a check so I walked over to the manager and said, "are we free to go because no one has come back to our table in almost an hour." He replied again, the kitchen is closed. So first off, I had reservations for 7 pm. The table wasn't ready. At 7:30 a hostess approaches me to say there are no tables. "But I have a reservation?!" She returns and apologizes, my table has been ready. No one had told me. First fail. We sit and the waiter takes our drink order. We also order oysters, half east coast, half west. My husband ordered a spicy margarita, $15 drink. It comes and it's not spicy. Not. At. All. We get the oysters. They all look the same. We ask. They're all east coast. We're promised what we ordered and move on. The food takes a long time to arrive. There's a HUGE LAG between courses. We order another margarita SPICY. We also ordered big eye tuna sashimi, the shrimp and grits and the oxtail for two. We get the tuna, there are literally 4 SLICES ($17)! Then the second round of oysters. It's all good the oysters are fresh and tasty if small. The mignonette is good. I get my shrimp and grits first after like a 20 minute lag. I look at it and the waiter also looked at it and SAW NO SHRIMP ($20) he took it back and then immediately brings it back and points out THE SMALLEST GULF SHRIMP I HAVE EVER SEEN! Again this is a $17 dish. After I'm finished with my food the oxtail comes out. It's delicious but it's not hot. Not. At. All. Like was waiting somewhere for a long-ass time not hot. Ok. This is a $100 dish! (OK we were charged $98 but whatever.) It's not hot. The waiter disappears for long moments and we're hungry and it's tasty. We ate it. The meal with drinks was $260. They charged us for two oyster plates. We did eat two but it wasn't because WE made a mistake. THEY DID! That's a lot of money for not hot, mediocre food and lackluster service. The waiter was a dear and we tipped him well, possibly better than we should have but it was poor quality food and poor service on the kitchen and bar end not the waiter. This was a well enjoyed date night! I was there for MLK day and they had a chef's special $55 for a four course dinner and WOW. First up was tuna and crackers, served really adorable in what looked like your average tuna can but oh so delicious! For appetizer we had a "baloney sandwich" .. it was really tongue beef though and probably my favorite part of this special. The main entree was a turkey wing over some sweet potato pie and greens.. probably the BEST greens I have ever tasted with chunks of meat . As much of a sweet tooth that I have .. I wasn't crazy about the pecan pie, but that's fine cause everything else was so great I could do without dessert. From the regular menu, we tried the Bigeye tuna crudo. Not your average tuna taste .. it's fused with a Cuban coffee flavor and threw me a off a bit, probably won't order that again. Ordered the BEST fried chicken I've ever had- crispy, hot and fresh, and so much flavor. I was delighted to have flavor in every bite of the chicken, not just the skin as sometimes happens in other restaurants. Side of Mac and Cheese was a great companion to this along with the baked peas it comes with. And apart from the food we enjoyed craft cocktails and listened to live jazz while we waited for our table by the bar. This place deserves a review, it's cool, decor is late 50s and the bar is awesome with big wide open windows. I liked the food overall but the flavors were just too bold! We loved nearly everything about this place. The vibe was cool and friendly and we loved the food SO much. We made a reservation a week ahead of time as we were celebrating my birthday. We found an excellent parking spot right out front and were promptly greeted and seated upon arriving. Let's start with the fabulous food! The cornbread was delicious, served warm with butter. It melts in your mouth. The ribeye steaks were some of the best we have ever had, cooked to perfection. Both of my sons ordered it and they were very complimentary. I ordered the grilled fish with avocado mousse and tomatoes and it was truly delicious and my husband raved about his orange pork ribs. The only disappointed party was our daughter who had the blackened grouper with sides she did not enjoy. The only reason we didn't give the place a 5-star review is that the service by our waitress, Diana, was erratic. She took a bit to greet us when we were first seated, and once she did, was very friendly and her service excellent up until our food was delivered to the table. Right after that we didn't see her much and felt ignored through to dessert and right up until we left and had to ask several people to grab her attention for utensils, dessert, the check and so forth. Our water was filled at every opportunity (by the manager and other staff) which to me is always the mark of great service, and the manager took great care to make sure our waitress came over to our table (after we waited a bit when we were first seated), and also made sure to check in on us throughout the meal. He was exceptional and honestly saved this from being a lower rating. Because we were there celebrating my birthday, my husband let the waitress know. We saw other parties receive dessert with a giant celebratory sparkle in the middle of their dessert plate and I got one too, except Diana just handed the sparkler to my husband apart from the dessert dish. He looked quite silly just holding it and so I placed it in the dish myself and made it work. We tipped her 20% regardless as we have high respect for servers in general but truly it should have been more like 15%. No matter, we will definitely return for the food and hopefully a more attentive server. All in all we loved the place. read more

So we made a quick last minute reservation and scrambled to Marcus Samuelson's place in Overtown. Not knowing what to expect and severely underdressed, our hostess, Blake made us feel extremely welcomed by saying, " Hello Beautiful People" we immediately knew we were in for a treat. Our waiter, Isiah greeted us with as big a welcome as did our hostess, ensuring us we would be very well taken care of in his competent hands. He suggested we start with cocktails, a Yes Chef for me, something like a Moscow Mule and a Old Uncle Duke for hubby, somewhat akin to an old fashioned. The Atmosphere very vibrant eclectic mix of Art Deco tossed with a Caribbean vibe. The DJ playing music makes for a lively dinner experience. We started our meal with a dozen sweet small oysters, the best part was the mignonette made with sherry wine, unbelievable! Next course we went with cornbread served w a rum butter, yum and the orange glazed ribs. Savory, melt in your mouth, delicate ribs served over a bed of red cabbage. This is where Marcus' Swedish influences first appear. Very reminiscent of a Swedish Julbord. We then ordered the whole Chicken for two. Served with macaroni and cheese and collard greens. They brought to the table a whole spatchcocked Chicken, skin roasted to a perfectly coffee colored brown, inside meat tender and juicier than you ever tasted. Has to be one of my top 4 best Chickens I ever tasted. However, it doesn't end there, the Mac & Cheese is perfectly done, crusty top and cheesy pasta underneath. Best part of this dish was the Collard Greens in which my husband showed no interest at first but ended up downing the whole side on me. No fears, I ordered another to go. When I insisted he taste it, he immediately got lost in his own grandmother's kitchen in Sweden at Christmas time. Highly recommend this place both as a restaurant and overall enjoyable experience. Marcus, what is going on at your restaurant?! I've been to your restaurant more than 1/2 dozen times and always had an amazing meal with great service! Today I brought some friends who were visiting from Jacksonville and I was disappointed. When we arrived at 11:40am, the ambiance was great, we were promptly seated on the patio and the bathrooms were immaculate. Unfortunately, our glasses were dirty and my plate had dried food on it! My food was ok but the chicken and waffles were unacceptable. The chicken was too dark and the skin was too hard to eat! When we mentioned it to the gentleman who brought our meal, he refused to replace the chicken unless the inside was dry! We should be able to eat all the fried chicken, not just the inside. We were surprised at his response! We expected golden fried chicken. And the bone was red indicating the chicken was not properly cooked. I'm glad this meal was removed from my bill. The chef's omelet was over cooked and a bit salty. The flies were annoying. We expected great food and consistently great service from a restaurant of your caliber. Went here on a whim on a Friday night. What can i say about this place? For starters the venue is impeccably created and so different throughout the several areas of the restaurant. The service? Fantastic! Across the board our guy was Isaiah this night and to say he was exceptional would be understated. Then there's the food. Great new place! The ambience and decor were the first welcoming indications this is a unique and special restaurant. We had to wait a little while but we had some great drinks at the bar while we waited. One of the bartenders had a bit of a bad attitude, but luckily another one took over who was wonderful. Our table was in their beautiful covered patio and they had a DJ playing. At first we thought the music seemed a bit loud but we were able to perfectly hear our conversation while enjoying the eclectic music. Our server (Adrian) and the Managed of Ops (Freddy) were both absolutely amazing. It's been a while since we experience such exceptional service in Miami. We even offered our compliments directly to both. The food was spectacular. Everything we had was unique, flavorful and so delicious. Nothing disappointed. Given it was only the second day open to the public and all the COVID challenges...the restaurant really did an overall amazing job. Allow me to start off by saying if I could give this 10 stars I would. My husband and I came in about a week ago and fell in love! The decor is gorgeous s/o to the owner for such a beautiful eye and our server Isiah was exceptional. He was very knowledgeable and nonetheless charming (ladies be careful) lol. He started us with a delightful caviar service which was really unique and flavorful. It featured some toasted cornbread and a sour cream spread and even paired it with a nice champagne. We then proceeded to our second course, the charred octopus...OMG this was the best damn octopus I've ever eaten. It comes with toasted peanuts and a smoky bbq sauce created from squid ink. My husband and I were literally blown away at how delicious and tender it was. Isiah also paired the octopus with a nice mellow Pinot noir. We concluded our experience with the oxtail and a glass of Chianti and man I must say it was definitely the best thing I ever ate and I'm sure my husband would agree as we left there stuffed and very satisfied. Very disappointed in food. Service was very good. Great looking location. We went for Brunch. Started with deviled eggs, they were okay, chicharron on top were stale. Chicken and waffles - - - chicken was VERY overcooked, tough & dry( it's hard to cook dark meat), waffle was soggy. Server told us the syrup was spicy, so little syrup there was nothing to taste. Also, tried Mama Epps' Biscuits & gravy - - Biscuits were gross so dry they were almost inedible, gravy was like paste, so thick it could not even make the biscuits moist enough to swallow, Oysters were fried nicely but all the batter fell off, so NO crispiness to them. Sat us down 25 minutes late. Told us they were out of an appetizer 15 minutes after we ordered it. It was a 50+ minute wait between our appetizers and entrees. Offered us a complementary appetizer which was someone else's canceled food and had sat for a while. We were told "the kitchen was backed up" yet we saw them playing around and relaxed every time we look over there. One of the cooks was also wearing his mask below his nose/mouth most of the night. To top it off, after waiting 50+ minutes, my entree was cold. Only the duck skin was hot which meant the dish sat under the heat lamps. I was excited to learn that a Red Rooster opened in Overtown because I had visited the one in Harlem, and I loved it. Boy were we in for a disappointing surprise. My date ordered the grilled whole fish at Market value ($90!) I ordered the grilled ribeye, medium (it was more medium well-$38)! The sides were a la cart, "jerk" sweet potato ($14 for just the half) which turn out to be a potato filled with red chilies; truffle mac and cheese ($14). The fish was burnt to a crisp, bitter. We returned it. When it came back a little less burnt, it was tasteless, minus the overpowering cilantro flavor. My steak had no seer, and topped with sautéed onions, no salt; no pepper. The melted butter it sat on tasted better. Here's where their staff and host shined: While we awaited for the second fish, the host and server brought other appetizers to appease us, chicken-fried green tomatoes (sauce too sweet, tomatoes rubbery) and their urchin butter seafood pasta (salty like the ocean and inedible). They tried. Not their fault. They're not the chef. The restaurant decor was nice. I loved the live jazz music. The staff, all nice. So I concluded this: the menu is pretentious. Once you've tried one of their craft cocktails (I had several Old Fashions), delicious Fried Yard Bird, and baked beans you'll be hunkering down for a long night of GVO! We also shared the Mac and Cheese, Collard Greens, Grilled Octopus, and CCC Fritters which were all unique takes on these classics. We came in early on a rainy Saturday night and sat at the bar. There is an outside terrace and bar that plays smoother music that's equally nostalgic. We ate recently at the red rooster in the outdoor dining area called the coop. The service is wonderful, the decor is beautiful, and the food is incredible. My husband and I had the shrimp and grits. We enjoyed it very much, there were layers of flavor and it was very delicious. My in-laws enjoyed their meal very much as well and it was a wonderful dining experience. My only suggestion would be an expanded drink menu including herbal ice tea. read more

I am a big fan of Marcus Samuelsson and was anxiously awaiting the opening of the Miami Red Rooster in Overtown. The food & service was outstanding and the vibe of the restaurant was high energy and fun. There is one aspect of the restaurant that needs immediate improvement and that is having security outside the restaurant to protect the customers who wait for their Uber Drivers and Valet parked cars. There is a group of homeless people that hang out in front of the restaurant without Mask to aggressively beg for money as soon as you walk out the door. Everyone in my group was very uncomfortable with this situation knowing the COVID risk. Marcus needs to do a better job taking care of the customers who come to spend a lot of money at his restaurant. read more
