I have been to Red Rooster in Harlem and had been impressed with the atmosphere, service and the cuisine. So I thought I would have a similar or aligned experience at Red Rooster Overtown. I was disappointed with the reception and service. The food did not disappoint. Let's start with the reception. When we arrived for our 1:30pm reservation, we were about 15 minutes early and thought we'd just grab a drink at the bar prior to being seated. Upon entering the restaurant, a young woman was at the desk whom we acknowledged with proper greetings to which she responded by turning around and walking away with a word or acknowledgement. (We thought, that was strange. ). Then about 5 minutes later, another woman appears and greets up properly and welcome us and seated us immediately. After being seated, we waited almost 15 minutes before someone came to even ask if we wanted drinks. Noticing that service was lacking, we decided to place drinks, appetizers and our main courses at once, as we didn't want further delays. We ended up waiting 20 minutes to get our drinks and appetizers and an additional 22 minutes before we received our main courses. The waiter was very apologetic. It was all confusing as the restaurant was not crowded. The drinks, appetizers and main courses were delicious. Yet the service sucked so much that I will not go back. To add insult to injury, the waiter comes with our bill and kindly informs us that a 20% gratuity was already added to the bill and we could decided on adding additional. I was offended as the gall of 20%, how presumptuous! The service definitely didn't warrant such, and I know the service staff do not control the output of the bar or the kitchen. Newer restaurant to the area, and they're still working some things out, but overall, off to a great start! Once they finish everything, this location will be just as great as Harlem's . A little pricey, but good, flavorful food. Some of the entrees don't come with sides. The cornbread is delish . I recommend that they add white meat chicken to the fried chicken entree, as not everyone likes dark meat. Disappointed that I couldn't try it, because of that. Staff is very attentive, and they care about service and the customer experience! The ambiance is nice (there are different sections), and the music was on point. Beware the make Cuban waiter. Our experience was memorable in that our out of town guests were made to feel humiliated for not ordering properly ("Jambalaya- not shrimp and grits"). The cornbread is decent however this restaurant fails to make the most basic food item out there. What a fantastic experience! Exceptional in every way! We booked a large party on the patio for appetizers and drinks to come together after a celebration of life service for a dear family member. Timing is always tricky with these things and as it happened we arrived early and expected to wait for our reservation time. When we got there the Ops Manager, Magnus, and the entire staff were so accommodating. They showed us to their beautiful patio immediately and were quickly able to adjust to our early arrival. Before we knew it we were sharing amazing nibbles (the cauliflower and madelines were exceptionally good!) and having a great time! Our party was enjoying themselves so much that we wanted to stay for a full meal, but we were worried they would not be able to accommodate our large party on short notice. Again, the staff handled it with no issues at all. We were quickly given a table and had an incredible dinner. Some of our favorites were the whole snapper, the fried chicken and the squash (soooo good!). I'm really looking forward to going back again! The design and ambiance of Red Rooster is just so cool. It's a place I want to spend time at again and again. All of the staff members were extremely nice and helpful and I'm still dreaming about the things on the menu I didn't get a chance to try. This was my first time experiencing Red Rooster and I must say I was thoroughly impressed by the atmosphere and delicious cuisine. Upon entering the establishment, you are immediately transported to an atmosphere reminiscent of the 70s disco/soul era with intricate details that recall Harlem's upscale bouncing restaurants. Marcus Samuelsson is the chef that brought this restaurant to Historic Overtown and did not miss an opportunity to center the areas beautiful people and talent. Our server Coco was extremely friendly and helpful guiding us through the menu and telling us about the restaurant and it's Jazz Night that happens every Wednesday night! I am a vegetarian and I was extremely happy (and grateful) that there was a main dish for me that wasn't French fries or steamed vegetables lol! Coco recommended the Faux-Lafel Waffle and it was one of THE BEST vegetarian dishes I've ever had! Not kidding! The meat eaters I was with even said it was the best dish on the table! MUST TRY. Went here for the first time last night for my cousins 33rd bday dinner, the aesthetics of the restaurant was nice, the Dj was on point with the music, however the service and food was horrible, took over an hour for food to be delivered, we spoke to a manager and he concur that we did wait long and that he would send a complimentary bottle to the table, finally food came out and it was cold, after waiting such a long this was very disappointing outcome, spoke to the manager again and they discounted the bill 25%. Went upstairs to the rooftop lounge and ordered a bottle of champagne and when they brought the glasses 4/6 of them were dirty, there was red lipstick around the rim of the glasses, we pointed it out to the young lady and she brought clean glasses, we weren't going to complain to a manager again because now we're going to look like we're being problematic customers. I usually don't write long drawn out reviews but after my experience here at the Red Rooster I felt compelled too. My wife and I had a reservation for Saturday and were expecting to order from the Miami spice menu but we decided to just do the normal dinner menu instead. We were not disappointed!!! We were warmly greeted before being shown to our table and the place was beautiful!!! Bar was packed and the music was bumpin!!! I was expecting to order traditional soul food, but was left speechless at the level of sophistication seen on this menu! My server Henry was welcoming, and meticulous in his service. He recommended the steak with shaved truffles and the Jerk sweet potato, WOW delicious! He carried himself with a level of confidence and poise I have rarely seen in servers, and his menu knowledge was impressive, all of his suggestions hit the mark! As my wife was fixated on the food and decorum, I was focused on the flow of the place, and my god did it flow. The managers on the floor were constantly visiting tables, running food, and even cleaning tables!!! I was blown away, all the servers were smiling at their customers, and at each other! This place is a gem, and the place felt like it had its own heartbeat. In the end Henry told it was a pleasure to have us, and We replied the Pleasure was all ours. The service is the only reason I gave it 2 stars, because that was great, but that's it. Drinks were terrible and the ribs were weird tasting like there was some rotten fruit used in the sauce. The beans were pretty good with the chicken but they were so smokey I'm pretty sure they poured a whole bottle of liquid smoke into the pot. I think my biggest disappointment is how overdone all the dishes were. I went there expecting some authenticity and instead was met with instagram-friendly oversauced food. Go back to the basics! Okay, I have been to Red Rooster 3 times. I love the vibe, the restaurant itself is beautiful, filled with fabulous amazing art by some of the worlds greatest artist of African Descent. There is a blue sculpture by Elizabeth Catlett that just draws you in; there's more, so much more. But this is a restaurant review, NOT art... I have had one night time event, one brunch and one early dinner (7), the latter made the cover of the NY Times as we are a group of "mature" women that had our shots and out dining. So I want to start with the service. Bar none, the wait staff knows the menu, inside and out. The best part, they know the nuances of the menu. They have been well trained and it shows. They know ingredients and tastes. I have had Richard, Joanne and the last guy I can't recall his name but the first two were killer. The Manager is Reggie and she talked us into having CordBREAD ICE CREAM; who does that??? My absolute highlights were the brunch dish that was called biscuits and gravy. I read that and went nooooooo, but then it said creamed Collard Greens but I ready, collard green gravy... AND they had oysters on top. Well, I am a sucker for friend oysters. They were okay, for my taste a tad too done but the flavor was on point. Each time I have been, had to have that jerk baked sweet potato. My last trip we ordered a ton of appetizers and had a great time. Sunday brunch had an awesome gospel group; there were at least 5 of them and they came with their own giant plexiglass screen. The music was amazing. Friday night's DJ (early evening, like 7) was killin' it. Love that brother and will go back. One note, my friend was served for a shot of tequila, it was very tiny.
