We visited Red Rose as our personal fave, Simply Khmer does not operate on nationally recognized holidays. I suppose you can say, they are more Americanized out of the bunch. We arrived shortly after 1pm, with plenty of seating available. Parking was also a breeze. Believe me, the lot can be a nightmare, as it's shared with other businesses in the plaza. The booths, I must mention, quite compact. Although a party of 2 can be seated comfortably, parties of 4 who are robust in size may want to choose the table option... On this encounter, I felt a bit rushed to place my order, nonetheless, service was satisfactory. They do provide two menus, one that contains pictures for reference, the other, a binder of their extensive menu list. A splendid array of food, you'll be pleased! Generally speaking, Lowell establishments have the most unsurpassed menu prices, with Red Rose as no exception. So, I opted for a Large Special Combination Noodle Bowl ($9.50) to share with my god-daughter. It consisted of beef flank, tripe, meatballs, and shrimp. A great bargain, as I did not have to pay extra for meatballs and shrimp. It definitely satisfied my noodle soup craving. My sister decided on the Regular Sized Phnom Penh Noodle ($7.50). If you're not familiar, this is the Cambodian variation of Vietnamese Pho. The major difference is the swap of pork components, with pork neck bone, pork butt, ground pork, and pork liver.. If you're adventurous enough, try it! Its really good! One issue I failed to understand is why basil and/or mints leaves aren't accompanied with bean sprouts. Isn't this standard? First and last time eating here. The beef lok lac was gross. The half of the meat smelt so disgusting I couldn't eat it (I mean why would I when it was rotten). We aren't regulars here but we stopped in for a change. I love that there is a menu with just pictures to help you decide on what to order (or useful if you aren't familiar with Khmer dishes) The noodle soup and porridge menu is quite extensive. You can get almost every noodle soup "Rose" style which is similar to "Phnom Penh" style with fish cake, minced pork and boiled liver. Of course, if that's not too your liking, you can stick with the traditional "Special" which comes with beef, meatballs, squid and shrimp. The "large" size stir fried noodle dishes are great to share. Hubby and I got Mee Ka Thung Special and we could have made a meal with just that one dish. Chinese broccoli and beef were plentiful (as most places usually skimp on that). Food was good and service was quick. The only downside is that parking can be tricky sometimes. Also, try to get a table away from the main door as it can get breezy in the colder months. The complimentary hot jasmine tea should warm you up if you don't have any other choice. read more

You get what you pay for here and in my opinion, you get the best out of all of the Cambodian restaurants in Lowell! I am a regular here and the owners and servers treat me well every time. Service: Always great. From the owners to the servers, they always ask if everything is okay with food and service. That is excellent customer service. Atmosphere: Nothing special, but who cares. And there's always some Khmer karaoke playing in the background. Food: The food is great! I usually order a Special Meekathung or a Kathiew Special with some fried dough. Price: The prices are higher than other Cambodian restaurants in Lowell, but it's pretty affordable still and taste great, in my opinion. Like I said, you get what you pay for. You're in the authentic leagues here. Waitresses who barely speak English, bare minimum decor, religious offerings near the front entrance--yep, this is a little slice of Cambodia. Since we overate at the last Cambodian place, my friends and I decided to get just a couple of big dishes to try. Chicken-fried Lort Noodles - Very tasty, though lort noodles have the disturbing shape of maggots. The accompanying hot sauce was fantastic, but overall, fried noodles (of any shape) don't really do it for me. Rural Sour Soup with Tilapia - No one else was very crazy about this soup/stew, but I. LOVED. IT! Lots of lemongrass, lots of delicious leafy green veggies (I don't know their English name) and a whole tilapia fish cut up and simmered til tender in a clear, tasty slightly sour (from the lemongrass) broth. This is among the top 10 best soups I've ever had and I am a soup FIEND who drinks soup everywhere from every place of every culture! That's how good this soup is. If you're not turned off by whole fish (scales and bones included) being used in your slightly sour soup, GET THIS! I think this place might have been a bit too raw for my friends, but I'd highly recommend it for those who are really, really adventurous. read more

Ok, so this place has been down the street from my house for well over 5 years now - but today was the day I decided to try it. Nothing prompted me to other than the fact that the nearest restaurant was equally far away. Serendipity, if it were. Food My brother and I had pork vermicelli soup and special pad thai. Both were large of course, because we figured we'd go big (and bring it home if we had to). The soup was very flavorful, and you could tell that the broth has been cooking for a while (as it should when it comes to asian cuisine). One thing to note however, is the condiments on the table. They don't use the conventional Sriracha (spicy) and hoisin sauce (sweet) here. So prior to putting it in your soup, you should check to see if it's to your liking. The spicy sauce has a less spicy burn, whereas the hoisin sauce has a garlic/peanut buttery taste/smell to it. I have tried pad thai in many different restaurants around Lowell, and I must say this has got to be one of the best. First off, the portion is huge. I'm talking about feeds-two-people-for-ten-bucks-huge. The flavor is just right where it should be with the slightly sweet taste. The money-maker here though, is the quality in which it was prepared. The pad thai here has a dry-stir-fry style to it. This means that it retains it's softness, but has a slight smoky flavor to it. The noodles are consistent, it isn't too oily nor is it burnt. Many pad thai places just get it all wrong, and it turns out to be some kind of oily fiasco from a chinese buffet. Atmosphere Not much here. You have an L-shaped restaurant with the front for casual dining, and the back for larger groups. There's a TV over the cashier that seems to be put to whatever channel the current guests like. I must note, that in the spring/summer this location is a hot-spot for people who use the park across the street. Every time I drive by, it's consistently packed (maybe that's why I was so hesitant to try it). Staff The staff is very accommodating, especially if you speak Khmer. They'll chat with you while they're doing their work if it's not too busy. However, I am not Khmer so I'm limited to the basics like water and getting the check. Final Thoughts I would definitely like to visit this place again, soon. However, I need to brush up on my Khmer because their menu doesn't have pictures. Came back here for a lunch with the family a few days back, having been coming here for so long with my family its only natural that I would end up back at Red Rose. This time around the place was exceptionally clean, spotless tables and chairs with no sticky spots anywhere. Had the Beef and String Bean stir fry with white rice and it came out hot and tasty with generous amounts of succulent beef in its own special gravy. Skeptic on my last visit I keenly looked around every nook and cranny of the food and beverages being served and to my surprise, no bugs! Looks like they did a good cleaning of the place. I would still give the place 3 stars from the shock of my most recent visit BUT 4 solid stars for the management. One patron that was dining at the table next to us had the Stir Fried noodles and a bowl of Kuy Thiev Phnom Penh, ( I was curious shoot me ) He took out his card to pay but the management took cash only, the man didn't have any cash so the man went about to find a ATM but couldn't find one nearby. If you're looking for authentic Cambodian dishes, Red Rose is a great place to find them. This restaurant has been around since I was a kid many moons ago and it's changed quite a bit. I remember it being a small place with only a few tables for seating, but it has since expanded to accommodate larger groups. I would suggest going family style here to truly get a good taste and sample of authentic Cambodian cuisine. I try to go with a bigger party and order a big bowl of jasmine rice to share accompanied by several stir fry dishes and soups. The fried rice, lemon grass chicken, sweet and sour soup (with pineapple, tomatoes, and chicken), and huy keoung (aka fried meat goodness/great alternative to an egg roll if you're wanting something different) are my staples when I visit. read more

Food was really really delicious. Fried squid appetizer was my favorite-not greasy, nice and light batter, with yummy hot pepper and lemony peppery dipping sauce. All the food was yummy and savory. Wait staff could have been more attentive, had to flag them down several time to get water, but then they brought a tea pitcher full of water to leave at the table. The main problem was when the bill came. All the prices were $1 or two more than listed on the menu. When we pointed it out we were told "oh, that was an old menu"....um, not really okay.
