Got take out from this little hole in the wall. Service was fast and the place was filled. I ordered simple foods, chicken with veggies and crab Rangoon. Everything was fresh and delish. Their spring rolls are crispy and not at all greasy. You can tell they take pride in their prep and store. It's a family run business. Everyone from the cook to the waitress said hello to me when I was ringing up my food. Will absolutely eat here again and I plan to branch out a bit more on my food selection next time. read more

crab rangoon - amazing. flaky, crispy, and the dipping sauce is not just duck sauce.... it's some yummy house sauce. sweet/spicy wings - good flavor. cooked well. i'm just not big on bone-in wings. but for what they were, they were good. yellow curry - hands down the best part of the meal. perfectly sweet, tons of chicken, pineapple chunks... best yellow curry i've ever had! drunken noodles - also good, but SPICY. careful guys. thai iced tea - yum :) all that came to just over $50 which is reasonable i suppose... maybe a bit pricey. all in all i will continue getting food from here when i'm craving thai! read more

I can't believe I just discovered this gem down the street from my house! I had a thai craving after a weekend long camping in the wilderness but my go to place pad thai can be fishy sometimes. I decided to give this place a try and it was such a good choice. I ordered pad thai , thai fried rice, shumai & crab rangoon. An overdue ode to my favorite North Shore restaurant. I will try to not get carried away. My fiance and I moved to Stoneham last year, and we tried several Thai restaurants before we discovered Red Sugar Cafe. It doesn't look like much when you go inside, but it is clean and the staff is welcoming. There are only six tables inside - there are usually other patrons eating in when we're there, but they get a lot of take out business. This is a small, family run establishment - it is a husband and wife team, and the daughter is always there hanging out, or helping Mom (Sandy) with the register. Sandy is very attentive without being overbearing. The food is Outstanding. The prices are reasonable, and you get a lot for your money. Red Sugar closed for a month over the summer when they went back to visit family in Thailand - we couldn't wait for them to come back! I typically order Massaman Curry (tofu) - he usually orders Red Curry or Muddy Noodles (tofu). Always with a Thai Iced Tea. Great food, displayed beautifully. We typically eat there or at least get take out every other week. If we have friends or family in town, we usually bring them to Red Sugar, and they are never disappointed with their orders. If I could only eat one meal for the rest of my life, it would be the Massaman Curry from Red Sugar Cafe. Seriously. read more

It's a hidden Gem in Wakefield, Ma. It's a small place but a nice moody vibe. I think it's a mom and pop shop, hence, you can hear them yelling in their native tongues. The server was friendly and may our visit very delightful. And, the food are good portion for a good price. read more

i've asked for country style pad thai with tofu. it wasn't on the menu but the woman behind the kitchen understood. I prefer spicy pad thai but man, this was on another level. It was so spicy, I couldn't finish it. I don't know if this authentic, but it was too hot for my taste. My wife tried the basil fried rice. It was alright, but we've had way better thai food at Thai Moon in Arlington and J Dee Asian Bistro in Watertown. For us, we felt this place was a little overrated but we're willing to give it another try next time. read more

This place is super good. I got something called the P.C.U which is a mix of pad thai and drunken noodles. Its a little spicy and sweet mixed together. It comes with wide noodles, carrots, broccoli, and chicken. Super Delicious ! I also go the crab rangoon which was also good but it tasted onion-y and I don't really like onions. My wife and I were looking for a good byob option nearby and found this place...and we were glad we did! It's a little out of the way from Main Street, very unassuming. We made reservations on a Saturday night but it was virtually empty when we got there which was concerning at first, but once the food came out we were pleasantly surprised. The spicy rangoons were delicious as was mango curry. My wife's pad Thai was very good as well. Great, friendly service, excellent food. Seems like the type of place you go to regularly where you become friendly with the owner and staff. Really a good little find. Oh my giddygod. Red Sugar was so good! If you love Thai food and are in the Wakefield area, but don't want to shell out wayyyyy too much dinero at Duck Walk, then have I got a tip for you: Red Sugar. Come on, the food was better than Duck Walk's, and significantly cheaper. And they deliver, and it was relatively prompt! The spicy rangoons are the bombdiggity, and the (tofu) mango curry I had was delectable. Others in the fam loved the pad thai, yellow curry, and the house special wings. The chicken is too dry. The appetizers are too small. They do not have any fountain drinks or large glasses. Just small cans for a small establishement. A lot of other places have better value. I was expecting something more spicy based on the name of the restaurant, but it was a little bland and lacking. Most of all, the menu is very small. The Duck Walk is a better Thai restaurant. Ten dollars is too much for a less than mediocre lunch. I was the only person in the place at the time, and it just did not seem to have a good ambiance. Did I ever mention that I am a pad Thai connoisseur? Would've Pad Thai cravings strike, I am usually uneasy because I crave the authentic flavors of this delicious noodle dish and the places I've gone to are either good tasting served by rude people (including takeout), nice people who serves inconsistent tasting dishes hit or miss, and then just meh tasting. It was thebomb.com The chicken didn't have a chewy rubbery texture and shrimp was perfect. The noodles style was a little too skinny/narrow I'd prefer it to be a little wider. But the sauce is what MAKES this dish. A complete balance off sweet, salty and tart. With some crunch from the bean sprouts and a little dash of heat. So worth it. My hubby got the Tom Yum fried rice --- it was good and he liked it however I noticed him picking off my plate more than his own. read more

Horrible experience! Waited over an hour for food that was mediocre. The pad thai was too sweet. Udon was too salty, curry was too spicy when we ordered mild. When I spoke with the owner after the meal for some consideration on the bill for the excessive wait (we were the only ones sitting at tables but many people walked in for take out over the hour) I was offered a free small rice. When I put my coat on she threatened to call the police thinking I was skipping on the bill. I said I would pay the bill, but then she told me to leave so she could call the police. You get the idea, this is a horrible place. Another customer told me on the way in his food wasn't very good, I should have taken that as a sign. Avoid it like the plague. Absolutely the worst restaurant experience in my life...on my daughter's 14th birthday no less. read more

Here's a question to ponder: How is it that this restaurant has 97 reviews as of July 2016, yet every time I go past the place (I work and live nearby), it's nearly empty? You would think that with all of these rave reviews that the place would be packed all the time (and it's a very small place). Or...is it possible that these reviews have been bought and paid for??? (Now we know that never happens on the Internet....right?) The reason why it's obvious to me that it's the latter is because I've found Red Sugar Cafe's food to be forgettable at best, and lousy at worst. I've eaten there three times and never once had a meal that I thought was memorable. And that explains why I've never seen more than two tables full in the restaurant. The better question in my mind is, how do these folks stay open when it seems they do practically no business? The best Thai food in Wakefield is Phuket. However, their portions are small, and so I honestly go there less than I would otherwise because I hate paying good dollars to leave a place not full. I will say that Red Sugar Cafes portions are larger. But more, of less, is not exactly a winning formula in my book. UPDATE APRIL 2018: Red Sugar Cafe continues to be empty every time I drive past it, which is several times a week. How they stay in business is beyond my understanding. A few weeks ago while I was waiting for a haircut in Wakefield, one of the customers in the barber's chair said that he and his girlfriend went to Red Sugar Cafe and had a really terrible meal. That set off a lively discussion in the place, and of the people present who had been to Red Sugar Cafe, no one said anything good about it. Anyone who eats at Red Sugar Cafe based on the (current) 4.5 star overall ranking on Yelp needs to understand that probably the vast majority of those reviews are shills. I traveled to the Boston area weekly for work over last two months. Thank goodness I found this amazing Thai restaurant. Friendly staff, good food, and reasonable prices kept me coming back. I wish I could transplant this place to Chicago! My favorite dish was the Drunken Noodles (I had them at least once per week). They were moderately spicy and came in a reasonable portion. I also tried the Spicy Thai Rangoon after it was recommended by some locals. They were good, though the portion might be a little large for one person to eat with another entree. Prepare to be full. Just had a wonderful meal at Red Sugar in Wakefield. I was with two others and we ordered the Pineapple Chicken, Red Curry and Garlic Udon. A couple tips if you've never been. One, it's BYOB, so bring a bottle of vino. If you forget, there is a liquor store around the corner. Two, parking is a bit tough so you might have to park and walk a bit, just a heads up. Trying out the Pad Thai at a Thai restaurant is the like trying out the bread at an Italian restaurant. If either are bad, it doesn't bode well for the rest of the menu. The Pad Thai noodles were thinner than I am used to, but the flavor was amazing. The wide, "Drunken Noodle" dish had just the right amount of zing and the ground chicken dish was perfectly spicy. We used to say, "not bad for the burbs," about another local Thai restaurant, but Red Sugar Cafe rivals any Cambridge or Boston Thai restaurant. The Red Sugar Cafe knows the perfect balance of fish sauce to sweet. The Thai basil was perfect. Every dish we've tried has been great. The prices are great as well. They know how to cook Thai food, that is no joke. We've tried just about everything on the menu over the last couple years, never disappointed in a singe dish. My favorite Thai place! I have visited Thailand and had authentic Thai food and this comes pretty close. The food is always fresh, hot and very tasty. We are vegetarians and this place has more than enough options. Everything from soups, spring rolls and ALL curries are wonderful. I have had better pad Thai but I go here for their curries. Someone else commented that the place is always empty and so not good. But the place runs mostly on take outs. Anyone who has had good Thai food will know this a hidden gem. You just need to know what "Thai" food tastes like and it's not just Pad Thai alone. Must try and you will not be disappointed I also like that this a mom and pop place and their girls are helping out. Nothing like supporting local business especially if they are good and polite.
