most delicious thai ever...even her Chinese food was fantastic...authentic and fresh! pad thai - so yummy and unlike any other pad thai around...made to order...it was devoured instantly vege spring rolls (fried) - outrageously tasty...nothing like the dense, soggy, tasteless ones from your local Chinese take-out place vege triangles - fun and tasty; reminded me of tiny samosas massaman (tofu) - fantastic tom yum - yum yum! one small criticism: dishes were just a tad too salty but this is still hands down the best thai I've had north of boston. read more

We wanted to try something new and local, so we picked the Red Sugar Cafe last night, based on their good Yelp reviews. It did not disappoint! At first, we drove right past it, thinking it would be closer to the main drag of Wakefield, but we were pleasantly surprised that its not. Its a cozy little place, presumably 100% family owned/operated, with only 5 or 6 tables surrounding the semi-open kitchen. Another pleasant surprise was that it is BYOB! I failed to see the "No Alcohol" mention on Yelp, and was looking forward to a glass of wine...but even better that it is BYOB with a liquor store right around the corner (within walking distance) ---turned that "glass" of wine into a bottle! :) Red Sugar does provide you with a bottle opener and nice wine glasses. We started with their Spicy Chicken Wings, Veggie Spring Rolls and Chicken Satay. All were out of this world, and would go back for those alone! Can't wait to try the Spicy Crab Rangoons... For the main course my husband got Spicy Thai Basil Chicken, my mom got Cashew Chicken, and I got Chicken Pad Thai. We all went silent and "ooh ahh-ed" as we ate the massive amounts of food on our plates. So good. SO fresh. And so much, especially for the price (average $10 per dinner, 5 per app)! All of us have enjoyed our leftovers for lunch AND dinner today! One of our favorite parts of the evening was chatting and joking with our waitress/hostess/(probably owner). She was so funny, attentive, answered all of our questions, and had great recommendations. Really glad we found this place. Perfect for date night (even when your mom tags along ;) or for dinner with a couple friends. Also saw a lot of takeout orders when we were there. The ONLY reason I did not give them 5 stars was because, like another recent reviewer, I used to live in California and the Thai food there was unbelieveable. Red Sugar is most certianly the best I've had in New England. If this were in Cambridge or some other trendy neighborhood, there would be a line around the block. Hmm, mixed thoughts about this place! As a Thai food lover, I am always trying to find new places and was drawn to this restaurant based on the amazing reviews. We also heard that the Tom Yum soup was bomb.com but...they were sold out! Bummer! We got the Tom yum fried rice and it was mediocre as well as the wing appetizers. The pad Thai was absolutely delicious, however, one of the best we have tried in the Boston area! I really wished I loved all the food but I can't say that I would ever feel the need to head out this way to eat at Red Sugar. Also, we sat right in front of the kitchen and were blasted with the strong cooking smells...we read this in another comment and thought maybe people were exaggerating about the strong smells but I will say that it was definitely strong! I was horriied. I don't get it - this place gets raves and I do not know why. Read great things about this place over the years, and never found it open. Finally ordered something and when I went to pick it up, I was shocked at how TINY it is - and a mess. The "kitchen" is a tiny stove top IN the area they seat people. Frankly I questioned how clean it was. As for best food around - huh? I ordered dumplings and they were in a packet that they order from someplace. They were then deep fried. Never in my life have I had deep fried dumplings, nor did I want them. The owner was very sweet, and I hesitated to write this - cause I don't want to unfairly influence people. But best place in town? No. Atmosphere? No. And everyone mentioned that you can't count on their being open. That's also weird. I will not be returning. read more

I ordered here after seeing all the fantastic yelp reviews. I picked up my order and brought home to eat and it was "fine". There was nothing wrong with it, but it wasn't excellent. I ordered the Pad See You, which is my go to Thai dish to try as a first at all restaurants and although it wasn't terrible and it may have been the best Pad See You I've had on the North Shore, it was still just ok. I will give Red Sugar another chance and try something different the next time. I will just adjust my expectations and then hopefully enjoy it more. read more

Omg BEST YELLOW CURRY in the area!!! Out in CA, I used to get yellow curry all the time, they generally use carrots,onions, and potatoes out there, but I've found that pineapple is common out here. The really sweet lady (I wish I had learned her name so I could properly thank her), let me swap out the pineapples for potatoes... and this may possibly be my favorite yellow curry of all time!!! Chicken is juicy, not dry, and the sauce is just the right amount of spicy... Definitely has a good kick but my mouth isn't on fire... Delicious and huge portion too. A group of 11 of us visiting from New York walked in. The waitress rearranged the tables in this tiny gem to accommodate us. Food was awesome! Prices reasonable. Portions huge!! Owner/chef came to check on us and chat, even thought to get us utensils for the leftovers when she heard we were staying st a hotel. We will be back next visit! read more

This food is the absolute best Thai food you will eat. The only down side is, the hours and the wait. I called on a Thursday at 5.. i was told 20-25 mins.. we walked in and was told they just started making it and it would be another 15.. we went back in 10 mins later and they told us another 10 mins.. we waited double the time of the food. It's fine if it's going to take a long time, she was initially alone but my advice is to just be honest and tell the customer it's going to be 40 minutes.. needless to say.. the 40 minutes was definitely worth the wait. The drunken noodles are perfectly made and i will def be back and hope my next experience is better! read more

This tiny little 4 table restaurant is kind of hidden behind a home improvement store, when I initially went in, I thought maybe they only did takeout. But I told her I wanted to eat there, and she brought me some silverware and water. She helped me pick a dish, and it was made very quickly, and presented very very nicely. The food itself was delicious, and a really decent portion. I had tamarind chicken, which i was concerned might be syrup sweet, but it was a sour tamarind, and nicely spicy - not sweet at all. Very nice selection on the menu, although I think the one online needs to be updated as I was disappointed to learn that they no longer do pho when I called in my order. I stuck with my favorite Thai meal (I can't handle spice as I'm a wimp so I don't try more of the cooler sounding dishes) and got the mango fried rice. They're in walking distance of my house so I took a nice stroll and picked it up. The service was super friendly and it looks like a really nice place to eat a meal. Got take out here Saturday night. Place is small, so I don't think I would very eat there. The Owner is at the register and was very friendly. Ordered Basil Fried rice which had just the right amount of heat to hit, was very good. Ordered the Pad Thai which also was good just a bit over sweet compared to other Pad Thai I have eaten and could have used a bit more peanuts on it. I don't get Thai food too often because I'm the only one in my house that likes it (I had to order chinese from another place for the rest of the family this night), but I would order again from here. This is a very small hole in the wall restaurant that I came upon by accident. I've been here for lunch on a few occasions and have been impressed each time. The service is friendly, the food is out of this world (you must try the crab rangoons) and I usually order one of their chicken dishes. I am not a huge spicy food person and they have plenty of choices for both the spicy lover and the non-spicy lover. In my opinion Thai food has to have impeccable sauces and they never disappoint. I would highly recommend to any first time Thai eater or a seasoned Thai eater. read more

Awesome! Absolutely amazing Thai place with authentic flavors of Southeast Asia. Even the whitey food like spicy crab rangoon is really good. The service is friendly and quick. The menu covers a good selection of Thai food so there is plenty to choose from. The kitchen is open so you can watch the kitchen work. There is deep rich flavor and spice in all dishes we tried. The best Thai in the area, bar none. In fact, the only better Thai food I've ever had is in Thailand. It's that good. Ingredients are fresh and flavorful, service is always very friendly, and its BYOB. The interior is small but intimate, with the kitchen practically being in the dining room (which makes for entertaining views) - this isn't a spot for candle lit dinners, but is a great place for a fun night out with a small group. Really like the food here. As we eat Thai food a lot we were looking for a good option after moving to Melrose, MA. This place in Wakefield is about a 15 min drive from our place and is worth the drive for either a sit-down or a to-go. It's a bit small to sit down if you have a big group of people though. We've had the pad Thai, cashew nut chicken, fried rice, noodles, red curry and everything is pretty good. The portions are bigger than other Thai restaurants too! read more

I recently moved to Wakefield from Quincy, where there was a great variety of Asian restaurants. I was a bit worried that I wouldn't be able to find a really good Thai restaurant in the area. Seems like a really good one is hard to come by. Red Sugar does Thai food perfectly. And you can tell they really care about the quality of flavors and utilizing fresh ingredients. I'm amazed to say that this is one of the better Thai places anywhere in the area. Its truly a hidden jewel in a small little space in Wakefield. A good test of a Thai place is the classical Pad Thai dish, which is done perfectly here. Flavors and texture is awesome. Red Sugar seems best suited to takeout, as the inside is fairly small, but it is still inviting to visit as it feels like a very family run restaurant/cafe. A few other dishes that I have tried and stand out to me: Spicy rangoon: the classical crab rangoon with some spice kick Red sugar wings: these are insane, like candy. Very Crispy and spicy. Drunken Noodle: one of my favorite dishes when not reaching for pad thai. Curry dishes are also well done. Everything is pretty much right on. read more

Those wings are fantastic (and the steamed gyoza was delicious too)! Service is so sweet and kind and they are very proud of their dishes (which they should be). My GF got the General Gau's and it was unique and sweet but very tasty. I had the Pad See Ew and was very delicious. You are not overwhelmed with the spices and flavors, which I love. We went to this place because we found it on yelp and then when we drove up we were a little skeptical. We ordered the crab rangoons because we were told they were the best and they were. I am a huge crab rangoon fan and these were amazing. We also order masaman curry and it was so flavorful and amazing. Everything we had was extremely good. This is a classic example of don't judge a book by its cover. Only problem was it was cash only and they did not advertise this anywhere. We were fine because the prices were so reasonable, but they should tell people before they sit down. read more

I'm always on the hunt for good thai food. When you walk in to Red Sugar, it's tiny, and you're wondering what they can do in such a small space. Let me tell you, they can wow you. The dishes are fresh, not bogged down in oil or too much sauce. I had the Thai Basil Chicken - it was perfect. Too many places don't give this dish any heat, Red Sugar did it without me even asking for it to be spiced up. I had lunch there, and boy was the price right. For $8, I had tea (wonderful by the way), seaweed soup, an app (crab rangoon, which was crisp and not greasy AT ALL), and a hefty portion of the Basil Chicken with rice. Excellent pad Thai and chicken green curry! The service was also great. Very friendly. When I walked in to pick up my takeout I saw them chopping up the fresh veggies to put in my curry. The curry was delicious and had big chunks of chicken in it. The pad Thai was equally as delicious! The shrimp in the pad Thai were also fresh and large, not the small frozen shrimp you get elsewhere. Great experience! read more
