We went here Saturday night for my son's birthday. There aren't a ton of upscale restaurants up there. We started with the frites & brussel sprouts. Both of those options were great. I had the Bavette and the meat was just tough. The polenta had food flavor but it was lukewarm. I also had the beets & burrata. No flavor at all. For the cost of this meal...nearly $300 without alcohol, I expected much better food. The rest of the people in our party enjoyed their food. I am not the person that sends food back. We're new to Chico and really wanted to check out Red Tavern. We have heard good things and are used to high quality dining experiences. We decided to make reservations for dinner at 6:45 pm. I called to make reservations at the patio but called again a couple hours later and changed it to inside dining in consideration of my 80 year old mom because I didn't know how well heated the patio was and didn't want her to get cold. I was told that they only had a table for five available inside at 6:15 which was just fine. When we arrived, the hostess said our reservation was for the patio and when I told her it was for inside, she insisted that I must have made the reservation on line (I didn't!) because sometimes there are inconsistencies when making reservations on line (unacceptable explanation!). I explained to the hostess that each time I called I spoke directly with a person who answered the phone. The hostess went to speak with someone and took a while leaving us standing by the entrance. When she finally returned she informed us that they were going to sit us down once they were able to rearrange the tables to accommodate us and make a call to cancel someone else's reservations (!!!!). We were very put off by this. First, we DID have reservations and second WHY tell your customers that you had to rearrange tables and cancel someone else's reservations in order to accommodate them when it was the restaurant's error?!? This made us feel very uncomfortable and frankly unwelcome. Thankfully the rest of our dining experience at Red Tavern was very good, our waitress was VERY attentive and pleasant and the food was great! We will definitely return because they deserve a second chance and we're hoping this was just an isolated situation. Hopefully the hostess will be nicer... or it may be our last time there.... Only three stars because of the rude hostess.... Otherwise would have given five stars. read more

I've been going to Red Tavern for years and I've literally NEVER had a single bad experience. My first Valentine's Day with my college sweetheart was spent there. We sipped champagne while enjoying a beautiful rack of lamb, unaware of the fact that 7 years later, we'd be searching for a place to host our rehearsal dinner. Red Tavern quickly jumped to the top of our list. Rich and his team were incredibly accommodating in the months leading up to the dinner. I went back and forth a few times between wanting to have the dinner on the patio or inside and Rich was consistently patient and flexible. Ultimately we elected to eat inside. Our guest count was 26 but on the day-of, I texted Rich asking if we could add two more people last minute. With no hesitation, he assured me that it would be no problem and that they would make it work. Our guests had a wide range of palates (a couple vegetarians and one vegan) but Rich worked with us to come up with an exquisite menu of locally sourced foods that would appease everyone - the Goat Cheese Croquettes ended up being particularly loved. Over the course of the night, I can't think of a time when any glass wasn't full or on it's way to being refilled. The pacing at which the dishes were brought out was perfect. The servers were both polite and helpful. Honestly, I feel like I could just keep listing all the things that went right but for the sake of brevity, I'll just say that not a thing went wrong. Red Tavern is an absolute treasure. If you're looking for an upscale and affordable place to host your rehearsal dinner, seriously do yourself a favor and get in touch with them now. Beautiful setting and unparalleled service crippled by underwhelming cuisine. Flank steak - bland, tough, and lacked flavor. Polenta was cold. Why are they serving such a low grade cut In a fine dining restaurant? Chicken breast - salty and slightly dry. Pork appetizer - outstanding. Slow roasted to perfection, pickled veggies provided nice balance. I am a foodie from San Francisco, but not surprisingly the food did not ruin the experience. The restaurant is well laid out and the patio is well designed and romantic. Our appetizer was very good, the drinks here are right on target, and I have never received service like this in Chico. Surprised to find a bigger city style restaurant here, so extra stars for them. Under management, Red Tavern is a nice neighborhood restaurant with a pleasant and creative menu. The concepts are great, and the execution is usually quite good. The happy hour menu lasts until 6, I think, and is different than the dinner menu. They do a pretty good job compensating for gluten free (husband has allergies). The wine is a little hit or miss at times, but the selection is fair. read more

My boyfriend and I went last night for the live music on the patio. I ordered the salmon dinner and he ordered steak. The salmon was probably the best salmon I've ever had! It was served on a layer of creamed corn, side of squash, cooked perfectly. The salmon was moist and flaky and had a crusted layer on top. I loved e very minute of our time there. read more

I usually don't post anything on yelp, however, my husband and I had dinner here this past weekend and the service, the food, and the atmosphere was spectacular. We were able to book a same day reservation. My husband had the short ribs and I ate the pork chop. Everything was so flavorful and fulfilling. As an appetizer we wanted to be adventurous and tried the prosciutto plate with duck liver dip. It was beyond my expectations. I even asked for more bread to eat with the dip. We will definitely go back here again. I forgot to mention that the Pomegranate Ginger Martini was so good I finished it before I had dinner. It tasted like a fruity Moscow Mule. This place never disappoint. Been coming here for Sunday brunch whenever we come to town. It's a great place to spend time with family. They have seating indoor and outdoor patio. There have been a few times we went and they had a musician playing outside. The menu is always simple never overwhelming with too many dishes to choose from but they also have a speciality dish for the day. The cocktail don't disappoint. In the past we have loved Red Tavern, my husband has given them 5 stars in the past but unfortunately I feel like it has lots its gusto and fine dining experience. The menu is way less creative and to some degree boring and predictable. It seems like food is more driven by keeping food cost down and less about creativity and fine dining. Crème fraîche mash potatoes are included on almost every set. Nothing is creative and overall I am sad the service, food and overall experience is less special. Our salmon was incredible dry after being told it would be medium. The charcuterie looked like I could have purchased everything at trader joes. Let me start this by saying my dad ended this dinner by stating that this one of the best meals he's ever had. From start to finish it was perfect to him. My dad is a picky eater with high standards and when I heard him say that I was shocked but honestly I 100% agree. I cannot believe it took us so long to try this place out. I've brought family and friends here many times, mostly for brunch. Generally the experience has been 4-5 stars, but unfortunately today I had a very negative experience. I think they may be in the middle of hiring some new servers or maybe a chef? Our waiter (I think his name was Andy or Andrew) was very slow to bring us our bread, our bill, and never offered to refill water. Honestly I think he may have just forgotten about us because I saw him being attentive to another table (and it's never a good feeling to feel neglected). I've never had this problem before with the usual servers. There were just under 20 customers including us (party of two). Finally when Andy/Andrew came to take our order, I decided to try something new on the brunch menu and got the veggie scramble. The entire reason I decided to order was because it came with kale (as stated on the menu as of 6/2/19). When my order arrived, the whole thing was full of spinach. I asked Andy to confirm and he firmly insisted the vegetable was kale. Finally, after about 20 minutes of uncertainty, I asked Andy to check with the chef. At that very moment, Andy decided to have a change of heart and said he too thought it was strange that the vegetable in my scramble looked like spinach. OK. So why did he insist that the item was kale in the first place? It felt uncomfortable and that our waiter had lied to protect his own mistake misidentifying the ingredient. More importantly, shouldn't staff be well informed about what is going into the food? Once he comes back, Andy said that apparently the chef receives many requests for spinach substitutes for the veggie scramble, and that's why the swap was made (ok...but I didn't ask for the swap). Plus, the menu next week would be changed to permanently reflect spinach instead of kale (still doesn't explain why my order was changed). He then proceeded to say they would be happy to accommodate any changes to my order (um, but the meal is over? And you misinformed me about what was in my food? What if you swapped with something I'm allergic to?) Ultimately what bothered me was the poor customer service and lack of communication between the kitchen and the server. Our server was poorly informed about the menu, not attentive, and made excuses for bad customer service. There were no apologies for any of this from the restaurant. I'd be willing to come back to Red Tavern, but not if he is my waiter. I hope management takes this feedback into serious consideration. Thank you. read more

Ate here for brunch on a friends recommendation - I had the seasonal veggie scramble and my SO had the crab cake and avocado Benedict. It was really good! I asked for extra mushrooms and my SO asked to add spinach to his dish and our server (I believe his name was Andrew) was very accommodating. I'm a little overbearing about how many mushrooms I'd like to consume (what fun guy wouldn't?), always joking that I "need 5 times the amount that a normal human should consume".
