For the last few years my husband's company has hosted the management team for dinner during the month of December. We all converge in the cellar of the Cafe and order cocktails, appetizers, and entrees, followed by dessert and coffee. The service is excellent and the food delicious. Not having to think about prices makes the meal taste even better. LOL We enjoy this venue for the annual gathering, having a space that is away from the regular restaurant crowd coming and going. The lighting is perfect and the space unique. My husband always gets Filet Mignon and someone in our party always gets shrimp and grits. I love risotto so that's what I usually order. We've tried all appetizers and especially enjoy the bruschetta and coconut shrimp. read more

We went for am early dinner on Friday, 8/30 at 5pm. No reservation so the hostess tells us that we can have a table for 2 if we can be done before 7:30pm for a reservation at that time. We said yes we will be done way before 7:30pm. 5-10 minutes later we were seated. This was our first time back since before COVID hit in 2021. We had a couple of fine dining experiences back then but this time was not even close to that. Our waitress had a slight attitude when I asked where the salmon was from. She said from the Ora river (as it stated on the menu). I asked where that was located and she I don't know I'll have to find out. By the time she returned with our drinks, I had already googled it and found out it is in New Zealand. Wife and I opted for the 14oz ribeye dinner instead. We ordered the bruschetta for an appetizer. Oops they forgot to put basil on the bruschetta. For those who don't know, crostini is very small toasted bread. We are used to bruschetta made with regular-sized sourdough bread so it was not very filling. Our dinners arrived shortly after we finished the brushetta and what a disappointment the ribeye steak was. It was only about a half inch thick and was tough and had a lot of gristle. It was cooked medium liked we asked but it just seemed like they went to Save Mart and bought the ribeye from there. Terrible quality and definitely not worth the $50 that they charged. Honestly, the best part of the meal was the seasonal veggies and the mashed potates. Like I said at the beginning of this review, this place was tops before COVID. Looks like COVID killed another restaurant. We left still hungry for more. Sadly, we won't be coming back here. read more

I don't know WHY this place has never come back on a search when we have looked for new places to try, but I'm so glad a friend recommended it because we will FOR SURE be back! We only went for drinks but ended up trying several menu items and all were fantastic! The coconut shrimp was cooked perfectly, the caprese bites were delicious and refreshing and the baked brie was melty and gooey, just like you want a baked brie to be! It was also served with a fresh piece of honeycomb, which is above and beyond in the presentation and added a sweetness that was excellent! Huge props also to the bartender on 5/19! We had a Gin Bath, a White Lily and he knew just how to make a French 75, something many bartenders either don't know, or just get something a touch too sour or sweet. This place is amazing! Who knew Modesto had such gems like Redwood Cafe! They are open for outdoor dining so we had a mom's night out and came here and I'm so glad we did. This place looks nice, they have a great drink selection and their food is top tier. Our table was seating outside towards the back where they have mini fireplaces and an umbrella ceiling type of covering. It was so cute! The ambiance alone made me want to come back. For start we ordered a bottle of LaMarca Prosecco which turned into two bottles by the time we left. I ordered the lamb lollipops and they were amazing!!!!! You get 3 as an appetizer and they aren't super small so it's enough to share. I ate them all lol. For my entree I ordered the halibut and had them substitute what it came with for their parmesan cheese risotto and I'm so glad I did because the flavors blended extremely well with each other. It was so good I was full and still tried to eat it all. The desert we ordered to share was the chocolate brownie which was supposed to come with berries but they had ran out. The brownie is served cold and that was a real bummer. I'd probably skip desert next time. Overall this place is stunning! Parking is crazy that's the only thing about this place that was annoying. Also there are so many places you can go which is wonderful but maybe have some signs or something put up so people know where they are going. Besides all of that great atmosphere our server was amazing definitely put in his work that night. We were a large party and showed up at different times and he was on it . VERY MID. Third time going here. First time had the pizza which was amazing! Second time chicken parm, also very good. This last time I got the salmon and this very expensive plate was not up to par at all. The fish was very salty and honestly not very great. Let me start off with our server, Deanna, was excellent! The drinks were decent; wine pours for the $ were small in comparison to other restaurants such as Fina in Ripon. Turley wine is highly over priced at $168 vs. 1/2 the price elsewhere. Portions of potatoes are HUGE, almost 1/2 of plate on the Spitznel and lacked sauce over it. The green beans were refreshingly al dente. The Lollipops (3) two were not overcooked and the one was well overdone. The bread was not bad. Hence, one star. What really bothers me was their indifference to my father's cut finger from a cracked glass which should have never been used. We were not looking to get anything for free which we didn't; a sincere apology not one you resent giving would have been sufficient. If you want "one kitchen" to cook food for weddings while you're in the restaurant, go ahead and take a risk. If you want better food for the price, go elsewhere. The parking for this place is horrid in this heat, you have to park quite far and then picked up in a golf cart. Forget trying to get a handicap space, a total of two are rarely available per my friend who recommended this place. Unfortunately, we will not be returning and I will let many others know about our experience. read more

I've lived less than a mile away from this place for almost a decade and never really had the chance to experience this place. First off, the parking situation is minimal, we had to park by the canal which was fine. We came early and checked in to see if our seats were available but as usual we waited. The hostess told us we can wait outside the lounge area......so glad we did. The ambiance and setting was so nice and tranquil. My kids ran around the event stage and enjoyed themselves. Then came back to sit down and had a splendid time. My wife and kids enjoyed every morsel of food that we ordered. The food was great, along with the servers. The music was at a right level and we really enjoyed our experience. Places like this is what we need more of in Modesto!!! I'd give you 11 stars if yelp let me. read more

We made reservations to take our family for a nice dinner while they were visiting town. We had made reservations a few days before and were only told that availability was in their outside tent. The tent which they have is not very nice and very romantic. I think if I'm expecting a nice dinner and paying the price I would like the whole experience. So we asked for seating inside the morning of, and they were not able to accommodate it, but they did get us to the garden. We were happy with the garden as it was nicer than the tent and decorated very cute. The service was phenomenal. Our server Chris was the best server we have had in the longest time, if not all time. The food was delicious as were the drinks. The bartender was also very knowledgeable. This is one of our favorite places in town so we will definitely recommend it. read more

Beautiful ambiance and seating inside the restaurant. The staff was very friendly and the food was prepared quickly and perfectly. I ordered the skirt steak plate with mashed potatoes instead of fingerling potatoes and it was magical! The vibes inside were very romantic and it was classy. I will most certainly be returning to this restaurant in the future. The only negative feedback I have is regarding the parking... the lot gets full fast and if you have a baby it's hard to navigate to the front door. We were able to get a reservation on a Friday night. They were very accommodating. My hubby has a smoky Manhattan while I had the rose champagne. We had the Brie wrapped in phyllo. It was a huge piece of cheese! We were pleasantly surprised. At other restaurant it would have been a slice. The appetizer was matched with sourdough toast, pecans, and apples. It's been 5 years since my previous review , so much has changed. I came last night for Mother's Day dinner. Before you could enter the restaurant from front door or the side door to where the bar is . That is no longer the case. We had to go to the side gate located in the parking lot . You go through gate and there is a hostess desk you check in at. I noticed right away how much different Redwood is. It was quite chaotic . There was tables all in the back outside. They also have opened a outdoor bar where there was a bunch of people. It looked like a bride kept running back and forth looking frantic. I was feeling anxious. I was told by the hostess that there was no clean glassware that's what was taking so long to seat me . When we were finally taken to our table I felt much better. It was a nice table that felt private even though you had people hustling back and forth. Right away my daughter told me that her silverware was dirty. She handed me a fork that had a good amount of food stuck on the bottom. I told the waitress and she brought me a new fork . Our server was a very nice girl and her service was top notch. Her name was Sienna. She was very attentive and always checked up on us to make sure we were good.The bread they brought out was great. We did not care for the weird honey butter. It had a odd taste. We started with the bruschetta that was $16. And we loved it . My younger daughter had a cup of minestrone soup that was $13. Was very good but horribly overpriced for the amount you got. My older daughter ordered a classic Margherita pizza for $17. First off pizza was very thin and not big . Definitely not worth $17. She did not care for the taste she said it didn't have enough basil on it and it tasted dry. My younger daughter and myself ordered The pork schnitzel for $35. We asked for Brussels sprouts instead of green beans. What a joke!! Portions were so unbelievably small. You got a very thin small piece of pork . With a few bites of mash potatoes, which were very good. And 3 small Brussels sprouts that were not cooked right. They were very hard and flavorless, we could not eat them. And I did not care for the gravy at all .We ended up leaving hungry!! My husband ordered the salmon for $40 . He said it was ok but not worth $40 . My final thoughts. I'm so incredibly disappointed with last night's dinner. We were looking forward to it greatly. Prices at Redwood Cafe are outrageous!! Portions are small. And honestly the food is not that great. You don't get a cozy romantic vibe that you used to while dining here . I don't mind paying high prices for food or for dining out when it's worth it. This was definitely not . I feel they have Bay Area prices for Subpar food. It's unfortunate because this is such a beautiful restaurant. read more

We sat next to the waitstaff prep are and it was slightly louder than usual, but not terrible. We could still hear each other. The crust on the Margherita pizza was perfect and crisp. The roasted chicken had a chili sauce. I'm not sure what I expected, this wasn't it, but it didn't disappoint either! The bread was hot and fresh! Anytime I have gone here, the food has been delicious. I've tried a lot of different plates and appetizers. My favorite is the spicy chicken pasta (extra sauce), coconut shrimp, and meatballs. Walked in at 5:30 pm at redwood cafe on a Friday 12/15/2023. They were fairly empty with plenty of room in the parking lot. The hostess lady at the front brownish blackish hair, mid to late 50s greeted us. She was less than pleasant. She was on the phone taking reservation for approximately 5 to 6 minutes while we were standing there, waiting for some sort of acknowledgement or signal. (if this was my business, and I was the hostess, and noticed that someone walked in. I would at least wave and tell them I would be just a moment.) she gave us zero acknowledgment, and looked right at us when we walked in. She told us that it would be a 2 1/2 hour wait. If we wanted to hang around. 2 1/2 hours is obviously not anywhere near reasonable to wait around for dinner. She clearly had an odd demeanor and non-willingness to have us as guest in this restaurant. a business owner, and would never want a representative like this gal to be the first impression my customers get. After she told me, it was 2 1/2 hour wait, I asked if there is bar seating. She did not know if there was bar seating available, and did not seem to care to guide us or help find out if there was any availability. We found plenty of open seating at the bar, but after sitting down and discussing our terrible first impression at this restaurant, we got up and left to another restaurant. All I can do is hope that their food is good enough to make up for their lack of respect for customers. Hope they can grow from this review. Two stars is extremely generous. read more
