This restaurant gets a 1 star review for food and a 5 star review for ambiance. We ordered the Short Ribs and the Shrimp and Grits. The Short Rib dish was bland. The meat was dry and tasteless. The polenta was okay, but the dish overall was lacking any kind of depth in flavor. This was very disappointing for the price. I've eaten at a lot of very good restaurants and don't mind paying good money for good food, but this wasn't worth it AT ALL. When the Shrimp and Grits came out it smelled VERY fishy. I have never in my life taken food back, but the dish smelled BAD. I apologize to the waitress for causing her any inconvenience and told her the dish smelled and she took it back no problem. The manager came out and agreed that the shrimp was, in fact, on the verge of going bad and told us he threw all that shrimp away. We ended up getting a basic Cesar Salad because nothing else seemed too appealing after that. The salad was basic, nothing I couldn't have made at home. Later on in the evening we ordered the Creme Brûlée and the sugar coating was torched too long which gave the dessert an overpowering "burnt" flavor. This was my third time eating here in the last 8 years. Each time extremely disappointed in the food. I wait a couple years then try it again hoping they revamped their menu or got a new head chef, but nope. Still really expensive gross food. Despite the bad food, they offer a great dining experience with moody lights and modern decor. Their outdoor, modern garden is a beautiful, fun place to enjoy wine and live music. The outdoor garden is designed to feel like you're in a comfortable, modern backyard setting. It's not too big, which is great because it provides more of a comfortable, intimate setting. I will definitely come again for the drinks and atmosphere. Overall, the ambiance is amazing, but more attention needs to be given to the menu and quality of food. read more

This is amazing restaurant.. great service and the food is food is fabulous. However, last Saturday I had made reservations for dinner as soon as they opened at 5 pm. We arrived about 10 minutes early and absolutely every parking space was taken, even in the overflow area due to a wedding reception. I understand that catering a large wedding is profitable but since there was nowhere to park, I called and canceled my reservation while in the parking lot. We were disappointed that we had to cancel since it was for a birthday celebration. Perhaps when the restaurant is having a private function they should provide valet parking or least tell those who made reservations parking may be difficult. I recommend the restaurant just not when they have a private reception. read more

Their Customer Service attitude is top-notch and takes what is a lovely setting and place for dinner to the top! My girlfriend had asked for a table next to one of the flaming bowls; the Hostess initially sat us away from the bowls. My gf pointed this out to the Hostess, so she went and checked with (a Manager?) and got us re-seated as wished. What a beautiful and romantic place this is, wow! I'm so happy I made a reservation here for my mother's birthday and to see the results of this day makes this place a must have to comeback again only without kiddos lol. The food was good and the pizza shocked me on flavors, it was crispy and crunchy from the bottom, not burnt but perfectly made. The cheese was delicious and melting ever time I picked up a slice and the pepperoni super full of flavor, I recommend this place for a family dinner, for a date with someone very special or even your folks or girls night out chilling by the bar. We had my mom's surprise retirement dinner here last night. It was everything and more. We were able to reserve the wine cellar room. Which is beautiful. It fit 14 of us comfortably. The service was outstanding. Joel is the best and we all love him. He was personable and kind. He answered all questions and gave great suggestions. Joel you are amazing. The food came out promptly. And of course the food was excellent. Our group had the halibut, steak, soup, shrimp, pizza. Everyone loved their food. I highly recommend coming here for special occasions and any occasion. Hi Redwood Café, While you have a great setting and the majority of friendly staff, my wife, son and I endured an awkward and painful experience with Serena P. There were a few things we noticed about the way she carried herself: she seemed to be in a rush, didn't follow up with us much, and eager to pull a "drive by" in placing a spoon for ice cream desert, our drinks, and the bill--good riddance! It seemed like Serena P. was in a rush; it was obvious she didn't want to be there with little to no interaction; The busboy and waiter on the other hand were very kind and took the time to explain certain dishes and Serena took notice. Guys, thank you for being kind and giving my son dressed as Spider Man (he's 4 years old) a warm welcome! Redwood Café, you guys have a great place and menu, along with other nice and warm staff--the other staff were nice to my son as well as other clients catching notice! This place is boujee AF. Such a beautiful beautiful place to eat with friends and specially a date night. Can be very intimate with the low lights and the layout of the place. This cafe/restaurant is HUGE so many tables scattered throughout the whole place. You can honestly get lost. We can here for my friends birthday and we were seated in the back patio. Very spacious. Fun. Loved the layout The customer service was amazing. Everyone so polite. Our service and darn me for not remembering his name. He was SO SO SO funny. Hilarious actually. The food is very different. Fancy for sure. But if you're stuck on getting something. They have plenty of simple pizzas to choose from. I ended up getting the margarita pizza and it was delicious Also a big fat 5 stars to this place because i discovered the best wine I have EVER drank!! Jacobs creek moscato. I had the seafood risotto and my honey had the steak polenta with mashed potatoes, this place should have more reviews because hands down best food I've tasted out in Modesto!!! This time we all had something different to eat. Has Pork schnitzel, which was very good, filet mignon, good although medium rare did not have much h pink and the Brenzino-fish special. All 3 of us had a different dessert, chocolate flourless cake which was rich, dense and sweet, Ghirardelli brownie and vanilla Gelato. We sat in the back indoor patio area which was nice, not as quiet as the restaurant. Enjoyed our waiter, super friendly and great service. Very sad to hear they are re-locating at the beginning of next year and not re-opening until summer, I believe. Sounds like moving to Lathrop. I am sure we will visit before they close at the end of the year, 2024. read more

Came here last night. We are looking for somewhere to have a nice party and wanted to try this place out. 1) Service was absolutely wonderful. All staff were not only helpful but extremely friendly. 2) My husband had the old fashioned. It was too strong for me but he said it was really good. 3) I had the chicken Parmesan and my husband the skirt steak. I thought his steak was WONDERFUL. He said it was good but not the best he's ever had. I really enjoyed the chicken Parmesan but the pasta that comes on the side was not good. I think it was the Alfredo sauce that needed some salt and thickening. We both we're happy with the portion sizes however. Sometimes you go somewhere and get a tiny amount of food. The servings were the perfect size for a dinner entree. 4) We asked about a kids menu. Although they don't have a printed version they do offer pepperoni pizza, pasta and chicken tenders for kids. I really liked this because, again, at nicer restaurants they don't always give that option. That being said, this isn't somewhere I would bring kids to. Much more date night atmosphere. 5) We wanted to have our party down in their wine cellar room--as I saw pictures online and thought it would be perfect. However the room isn't wheelchair accessible..which we would need. It makes sense..since it is a cellar. I hadn't thought about it before and was a little disappointed. No fault of the restaurants. Ultimately we really enjoyed ourselves. I don't know if it would be a place we would make a point of coming back to anytime soon. This is a hidden gem, well the garden area not Redwood Cafe. From Wednesday through Saturday night you have live performance and all are good and different. I love coming to this place and sometimes I am here 3 times a week. The staff are my favorite part of going there. They make you feel welcome and comfortable. I wanted to find a nice restaurant to take my family after we saw a show at Gallo Theater. Redwood Cafe was perfect. We arrived around 5:30 pm. There were only a couple of other people in the restaurant. It'd probably be more fun to eat at a more normal time. The first batch of complimentary BREAD we were served at Redwood Cafe is in my top three breads served ever... one of the other best breads was from a Thomas Keller restaurant. The first batch of bread was better than the following batches of bread because it was baked longer and was darker. It had much more flavor. Hot, crispy, crunchy, and steamy and spongy inside. The rest of the food was good, the four of us split four dishes. I would probably avoid the Farfalle $26 because it was kinda basic, something I could whip up at home. We dined in for our anniversary and Scott, our server made our whole experience great. He was well seasoned- friendly, informative, and held great conversation without feeling as if he was bothering us. We are new to the area and wanted to try it out for a while now....let's say the reviews did not disappoint. We were dressed casually, and brought our 7 month old in a stroller with us, but it can easily be a dress up date night in the future. In addition, either the manager or owner, not sure which stopped by to ask if we were satisfied with our food. My fiancé ordered a lemon drop, and wasn't too impressed even though Scott recommended a signature drink. Scott went above and beyond and had the bartender make a blackberry lemon drop in place of the other and my fiancé said it was amazing he should have taken his recommendation from the start haha. We started with the scampi shrimp appetizer which has a little kick, great to dip your bread in the sauce! We also got the meatballs and chicken parmigiana that both seemed to be homemade. The appetizers were a little small on the portion size but the entrees made up for it. My fiancé got the ribeye and it was cooked perfectly rare and was really juicy, kudos to the chef. Scott offered a tour of the wine cellar since I am a huge wine drinker, but since we had the stroller we opted out and checked out the gardens in the back which is beautiful. We were a bit disappointed they didn't offer anything special for our anniversary (a dessert), as the tiramisu I was eyeing but I was too stuffed to try anyways! Lol. Probably one of the first places that comes to mind when I think "date night"! I feel like this is always my go to when I want to eat someplace nice that is local. My hubby and I loooooove the outdoor seating area, although the inside seating is pretty neat, as well! We have always received great service. The steak is always superb. I have tried a lot of their specials on different occasions and pretty much anything we get here is delicious. The steak or the risotto special (usually a different kind, each time) is probably my go to. For appetizers, the crab cakes and lamb lollipops are great choices! I'm absolutely obsessed with their "Spanish Flower"-- Campo viejo cava brut rosé, fresh fruit, lemon juice st germaine elderflower liqueur, soda water... SOOO REFRESHING! I crave this often. I'm not a big fan of gin, but I gave their "Gin Bath" a try (because it's just so pretty!) and ended up liking that, as well. Their Thistle and Thorn Cabernet is also one of my faves. read more

Alas it was beyond blah and I usually LOVE this place. XMAS dinner for my partners and I, place looked beautiful as always, service was good, drinks were strong. Salads for my party? TERRIBLE 13 out of 14 HATED them. Meal? Was decent but ALL our food came out warm not hot...Ever have a BARELY warm steak or warm pasta? Desserts? Chocolate cake was good, but many of us had the fruit olive oil cake...DRY as the desert and almost no fruit jelly dollop to kind of moisten it...Ever eat dry cornbread with not enough egg or butter? That was comparable. Since I set up the dinner for the party, I'm still getting cheap shots via text for choosing the restaurant and building them up to my friends. I was left embarrassed and very disappointed with the food. Only thing that saved it was the room was gorgeous. I would give them a 5 star if the menu had more options. They definitely have several items to choose from but it's a limited offering. It's not a coffee shop so expect a decent tag for the meal. The interior is really nice for my kind of taste & the service staff is excellent ...excellent!!! The food is incredibly good & tasty. Food was good which was to be expected since we have been there many times before. However, this past weekend we weren't able to make reservations so we decided to stop in at the bar and eat there. What was supposed to be a nice quite dinner with my wife ended up sitting next to a young man that clearly came in already very intoxicated. My wife and I were unable to talk to each other the entire night because this person wouldn't stop talking. It was very uncomfortable and many times I asked him to quiet down and clean up his language, but that went on deaf ears. This isn't an issue with the restaurant because the bar tenders that served us did an excellent job and like I said the food is always very good. Oh well, live and learn. Welp, I've been here several times through the years but it was pre-covid. Now that I've come here again for a special occasion, we were left pretty disappointed. First of all, there's no clear direction of how to get inside to the host area. It's a giant confusing maze. My husband and I checked in and were quickly sat since we had a reservation. We were greeted by our server pretty quickly. He was very personable and knowledgeable. We ordered drinks, I got a pineapple drink which was great! We ordered an app, that was really good. A bean soup which was ok, kinda bland. Also the spinach salad, very delicious. We both ordered the pork schnitzel which was previously our favorite. Unfortunately it was nothing like before. The pork itself was way overcooked, dry like cardboard. Didn't taste or look like it was freshly breaded, looked like a frozen product. The mashed potatoes were good, creamy and seasoned. The mushroom gravy was without seasoning, had no taste at all. It also came with green beans which were also very overcooked. We would have said something but we never saw our server, he never came back to check on us and he wasn't the one to bring our food. When we finally saw him again he was asking us if we'd like dessert. We ate what we could and just decided that things have changed here. They are not up to par anymore. For the price and reputation I expect an excellent dinner and we were left very disappointed to say the least. read more
