I had the pleasure of visiting this movie theatre for the Color Purple advance screening. It reminded me of a flashback from my childhood days going to the movies. The theatre is intimate with a nostalgic vibe. There's about 6 theatres with old school seats. The concession stand sells standard snacks to satisfy your appetite during the movie. Ample parking is available in the parking lot. I'm uncertain of the prices because entry was free for the movie screening I attended. The staff were professional and polite. Finally got to catch a flick at Regal Tara Cinemas 4. I was here for a free sneak preview so I didn't buy any tickets, but prices seem to be around $15 for an evening adult. I like the old timey feel of the place. According to its Wikipedia entry, Tara opened in 1968 and the name is a nod to Gone with the Wind of course. It feels cozier since there are a mere four screens total. The small size also makes it a cinch to locate the bathrooms and your theater. Tara is owned by Regal so it's not truly independent but feels more indie since it's an artsy film house. There's a concession stand that serves ever-popular popcorn as well as beer. The seats were comfy enough, though towards the end, I was getting antsy but that might have to do more with the quality of the film. I was concerned about being able to see since this theater doesn't have stadium seating, but the slope of the floor was enough so that I could comfortably see over the two women in front of me. I didn't have any issues with the screen or sound. The other patrons were pretty well-behaved though cell phones loudly interrupted a couple of times, sigh. Since Tara is in a shopping center, parking isn't really much of an issue. There's a Publix and a couple of restaurants nearby too, like Hajime which my dental hygienist recently recommended to me. I was interested in seeing Won't You Be My Neighbor? and Tara was the closest theater showing it. I purchased my ticket through MoviePass, its pretty cool that I can use the pass at Tara . So Tara is a vintage looking theater and I love the the interior/exterior look of the place, its faux art deco. Sometimes you just want to watch a decent film and you don't need all the frills. According to Wiki, The Tara Theatre is an art house movie theater. The theater specializes in the showing of independent films, the only theater in Atlanta to do so exclusively. It's located off of Cheshire Bridge in the Publix plaza so there's free parking. The lot isn't that large so I can see it filling up on a busy weekend night but I had no trouble midweek. It's a Regal theater so you can purchase tickets online and look at showtimes. read more

Quaint neighborhood theater hailed as the first in Atlanta to solely screen independent films (typically 3-4 at a time). I've lived in the area for quite a while now, so I'm bummed I hadn't visited sooner. I went to see the Last Duel on opening night...our theater had 4 other groups , so there was plenty of room to spread out if social distancing is a concern of yours. Masks are "optional". The Tara is an Atlanta institution. Even though Yelp has it listed as United Artists, it is now owned by Regal. If you go to the movies as often as I do, make sure to get a Regal Crown card and start earning points towards free stuff. This theater is where to go to see all the Oscar-nominated movies and independent films the mainstream multiplexes don't show. If it's not playing at Landmark Midtown Art, chances are you'll find it at the Tara. Yes, it's small, and old, but the restrooms are clean and most of the theater seats have been upgraded. So it's actually a bit nicer experience than the Landmark. Plus, if you're looking for dinner and a movie, there are plenty of hip restaurants in the area. (Woodfire Grill, Alfredo's, The Colonnade, Fat Matt's, Red Snapper, Taqueria del Sol, and many more. Something for every appetite and price range.) Traffic at the intersection of Cheshire Bridge and La Vista gets backed up quickly, especially during peak hours, but at least now there is a light near the Publix so you can exit the shopping plaza with relative ease. read more

Just down the road from us is this wonderful theater that features independent films.The UA Tara will often show the hit indy movies at the moment and I'm frankly surprised that they aren't more busy than they are. We have been to see "On the Basis of Sex" and "Yayoi Kusama." Both wonderful films and just a stone's throw away from our home. The Tara is located in a little shopping mall that includes a dance studio, Thai/sushi restaurant, ramen shop and a pet supply store (that is unfortunately closing). We like to get in on the evening show after grabbing a bite to eat next door (the ramen is so-so though). There's a small window at the front and you should remember to bring your Regal card (I forgot that UA is now part of Regal... or were they always one company?). It's a small lobby with a bit of an old timey feel. Each theater is equipped with tons of felt covered seats. Not only do I like independent films, but I really enjoy watching it in a theater like Tara which has the added bonus of being right down the road. I've only been to this theater twice. The first time was waaaay back in the 90s and the most recent time was this past Friday (August 4, 2017). If you had put me in a hot tub time machine and had me switch back and forth from the 1990s to today, I would've been hard pressed to notice any differences in Tara Cinemas aside from the prices being adjusted for inflation. It has that old school vibe, although it combines both the good and bad of it all. Tara Cinemas is located on Cheshire Bridge Road in between the Midtown and Buckhead neighborhoods of Atlanta. Cheshire Bridge Road itself is mostly known for adult novelty stores, lingerie "modeling" shops and foreign restaurants but it changes just a little once you're about a block from the theater. Yes, there is a massage parlor nearby but there is also a Publix grocery store, Wells Fargo bank, CVS pharmacy and an upscale apartment complex right across the street. The community is actually very free-spirited, diverse, busy and yet relatively safe as far as violent crime is concerned. Tara Cinemas blends right in with the area because it has it's own style. It is a four room cinema that mostly shows indie and foreign films. The kind of movies they show is really its main appeal. The movie I recently saw was "The Beguiled." Even though it stars such big names as Nicole Kidman, Colin Farrell and Kirsten Dunst, for some reason it wasn't being shown at the larger Atlanta theaters. I paid $14.20 to see the 4:50 pm showing. This is a Regal cinema, so the price paid for popcorn and Coke were pretty much the same as I'd pay at the much larger Atlantic Station Regal theater. But the popcorn was kind of stale and the Coke didn't have that kick to it. The people who worked there weren't rude but they acted like residents of a small, remote town who were trying to figure out what the new people riding through were all about. Now I know this theater isn't supposed to be like the fancy new ones that you see in Atlanta but the room I saw my movie in had a sticky floor and was kind of stuffy. The seats had cushions but since it was dim I couldn't tell how clean it was. I enjoyed the fact that there were only about 12 people (including myself) watching the film. The crowd was older and I was the only one there who wasn't white. I'm not complaining at all about that though; I'm just painting a picture for the readers as to how the demographics were that afternoon. The sound was kind of low but since it was a small room I could still hear the movie. Afterwards, I found the restroom (with its three stalls and three urinals) to be surprisingly clean. In fact it felt cleaner than the room I watched the move in. I'm not trying to throw shade at Tara Cinemas. I know two stars is a low rating but I'm doing so with the attitude of "meh, I've experienced better" rather than anything else. I would attend another movie here if it's not showing anywhere else though. But I still think that Midtown Arts Cinemas is a better place in Atlanta to watch independent and low budget movies. read more

One of my favorite theaters in the city. They show mostly independent films & I love the classic old school theater feel. The theater is 50 years old and cleaner than most new theaters. The only drawback Is that they have become part of Regal so for 3 adults it was $38 and a large popcorn was $8.79 & a large soda was $5.99. So If you go on one of those dates like in the movie half baked, you may want to pick somewhere else. I was on a date with two women, my wife and daughter. Had you going for a second huh. I've only been to Tara Theatre a few times but I honestly don't know why I'm not here a few times a month. Tara Theatre shows 4-5 movies at a time, but they are all top notch Oscar nominee quality movies. Most recently, I watched the Imitation Game here. The charge was a normal cost of a movie at any Regal Cinema. Bathrooms are clean! There's a large lobby area where you can drink water while you wait for your movie to start. We sat at a table which I don't believe is used often, if at all, and pulled out a board game to kill time. It was such a good idea, that even one of the workers came over to watch. Movie theater seats are plush and comfortable. Each theater is smaller than an usual individual theater. I wish the movie selection changed out more but that's my only complaint to this perfect little cinema. read more

My fiancé and I love to go see documentaries and art films at the Tara. We have loved it since we were teenagers. We haven't been there since the pandemic. Tonight we were to see Road Runner about Bourdain. We got there a little early. The movie was showing in theatre #4. Let me first tell you Yelpers I'm a severe Asthmatic. I'm on 3 inhalers and Nucala injection. My fiancé had gone ahead of me while I went to the ladies' room. As soon as I entered the theatre I was enveloped by the thick dampness and moldy smell like an old dirty unkempt house with a leaky roof but somehow worse! The air was so thick it was suffocating. We looked at each other aghast and we said we had to go. So we went to the concession and he asked for the manager. While we waited my fiancé said he could smell it on my clothes. I said to the staff mold is very serious and that they probably should not be working there. My fiancé asked Stanley (whom I presume is the manager) for a refund. He didn't want to give us a refund! He finally did... I am calling Regal Corporate on Monday. I hope people do take this seriously. Mold is no joke. read more

Tickets were expensive even for a matinee showing we spent $23 for 2 tickets. The theater is very outdated and has cramped uncomfortable seats. The staff was friendly and helpful but overall I can't suggest this theater when there are so many others that are less expensive and more up to date. I had a random day off, so I decided to #treatmyself and catch a matinee showing of Lady Bird before the Oscars this weekend. I always pass the Tara on my way home, but usually opt for Phipps or Atlantic Station for movies. I'm glad I gave this theater a shot today! It opened in the 1960's so it has a charming, old-timey feel. Despite this, it is very well-maintained and clean. It is a small theater- it has 4 screens, so only 4 movies will be playing at any given time. They usually show indie or critically-acclaimed flicks, so you won't find any crappy sequels or blockbusters here. I've noticed that sometimes they have special showings of older movies, too. It is a Regal theater, so they do take the Regal rewards card. I don't know how this place gets on a weekend, but it was pleasantly uncrowded on a Tuesday at 2pm when I went and had no lines anywhere. It's in a huge shopping plaza anchored by a Publix, so there are loads of parking spots available. As for the movie, the picture quality and sound were fine. The seats were nowhere near as comfy/cushy/reclinable as Phipps, but pretty standard and comparable to Atlantic Station. One thing I did notice was that I could hear the sound from the screening of I, Tonya (which is also a great movie) in the auditorium next door. Not the whole time, only at certain parts of the movie. It wasn't enough to ruin my experience, but was a bit annoying. Overall, I like the Tara and would come back for a chill, low-stress movie experience, or if I wanted to check out the latest Oscar nod. read more

This is an Atlanta mainstay... and regularly shows some of the nation's and world's best films in a capable way. We saw "The King's Speech" there over the weekend - it will win the 2011 Best Picture, no question - and we did will-call, waltzed right in to the theatre and sat down. The viewers were deeply moved and impressed; it was one of the few times I've heard an adult audience applaud afterward. As with all joints, they have their issues. During one screening last year my date and I were frustrated by irritating feedback and film irregularities - so they gave me my money back when asked. Very cool to make a bad situation at least a bit better. At "King's Speech," my bad audience karma was alive and well, with a flu-ridden, I'm-so-sick-I-can-hardly-walk viewer, coughing up a lung across the aisle (which turned out to be enough of a sanitary cushion). Too bad the theater can't do a breathalyzer on people who should be bed-ridden and not infecting other people! God only knows what they'd find. Theaters are not just a place to escape, they are a place to learn and grow - and Tara has a proven track record in bringing us movies that do just that, in a mature and predictable setting. read more

Interesting divergence of reviews here, leading me to believe the Tara experience is a bit schizophrenic. I hadn't been here in many years. 2 PM Saturday afternoon show for us - easy parking, pleasant staff, comfortable seats. Very comfortable seats, actually. However, I'll hold back a star. The potential for blocked views because of the limited theater floor slope worries me. Also, the sound is not the best and it was way too loud during trailers. I realize loud is the norm, but it seemed much worse here. My wife held her hands over her ears and I wished I had earplugs. Awesome environment for independent films. A group of 5 of us went to see Cartel Land. The seats were comfortable and the arm rests do move out of the way, unless you use the drink holders. This location is very clean and has a bit of nostalgia about it, which I love. The temperature inside the theater was a bit warm, otherwise I would have given it 5 stars. If you're like me you probably rode past this place a dozen times thinking it was either condemned or an undercover adult theatre. Well to my pleasant surprise, it is actually a really nice theater. Last Friday, I saw perhaps one of the greatest love stories of all time (La La Land) and thought the theater was a solid A-OK to see it at. Things to know: ***** I. LOCATION & PARKING: Using Google Maps, you should have no problem finding it. It's on the other side of the lot of Publix. Parking can be a pain on the weekends. But if you don't mind walking then you'll probably find a spot. II. PRICES: They have different ticket prices for adults, children, seniors, etc... For an adult ticket on a Saturday, 7:30 PM show, it cost $13.28. Compared to other theaters, it's slightly more affordable, but I wouldn't say it's a steal. They offer four movies -- which is not very many -- I strongly recommend to call or check out their website to see what's available before making a trek. III. FOOD & DRINK: Pretty standard movie theater eats. My lady bought us a medium sized tub of popcorn -- with extra butter -- and a box of Junior Mints. I wouldn't expect anything above average here. IV. THEATER EXPERIENCE: - We sat in the farthest room away from the lobby on the right side of the building. They do not have raised seats, so if someone is walking down one of the aisles like they often did last Friday, your view will likely be obstructed. - Seats were solid, but not overly plush or comfortable. They felt auditorium seats at a high school. - I could barely hear what Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling were saying in the movie. The bass was almost inaudible, too. These were my biggest gripes that would deter me from returning. V. OTHER TIDBITS: - The theater, including the bathrooms, were clean. - I had no problems interacting with any of their staff. - If you have a shorty that loves ramen, an easy date night is eating at Hajime next door and then catching a movie afterwards. I love the feel of this theatre! It's a bit old here and there, but there's not many theaters like this one. I enjoy all the films they show here and it's great to see the work of independent producers. Prices here I think are below average, especially compared to the usual big theaters in the downtown area. Facilities were clean. Seats were not bad and don't have many complaints for the place. I enjoyed the theatre layout cause it was very classic. Sound could be better for sure. Parking should be fine, it could be pretty busy given the amount of restaurants near the area. This theatre is cute with plenty of parking. It's def. not stadium seating and if someone is super tall and sitting in front of you, you might need to find another seat... This is easily my favorite theatre in the entire Atlanta area. It may not look like much from the outside, but the interior is just darling. A small theatre with only a few screens and a quaint walk-up window to purchase tickets. The concessions stand is standard, but the atrium is where the real magic is. The entire ceiling and upper part of the room is decorated with stars and scenes from Hollywood. Even above the doors of the bathroom it reads "Actresses" and "Actors" for the respective genders. Just loved this. The theatres themselves are rather vast, but they are not your typical, modern stadium setup. Nay! Laid out like a theatre from the 90's with only a slight slant in the floor. I actually really loved this. The staff was so nice and I love how dapperly dressed they all are. The whole experience was just wonderful. I love me a good arts cinema, and Tara fits the bill. No fancy stadium seating, just good quality flicks in a decent spot. On my most recent trip I fell in love with the woman at the concession stand. Not literally, but we no doubt bonded. She was hysterical and fun and all parts cute, while still being efficient: total awesomesauce in my book. The prices here aren't any more than other theaters around town and they're always playing a great selection of edgy documentaries you've never heard of and the smart blockbusters that everyone is talking about. I'm happy that Atlanta has an art theater as large as this, as it means we get some of the best of the best in terms of lesser known films. One of my favorite movie theaters in Atlanta. They always have an interesting mix of big releases, indie and foreign films on the marquee. The theatre here is clean, has comfy big chairs, just the right slant so the tall person sitting in front of you doesn't impede your view, clean bathroom and a friendly staff. The Tara is the best - if not the only movie theater in town to catch the latest independent or foreign movie release, in other words this is the theater to be at during Oscar season. Because the Tara is often the only theater to catch these limited releases, parking and tickets go pretty quickly - especially on the weekends. The best solution is to pick up tickets in advance - either at the box office or online - and to arrive early. This theater is also one of the smaller ones in Atlanta, even so it's one of the only ones with a waiting area, with two comfy sofas and a few tables; it's ideal for waiting for the rest of your party to show up! The auditoriums are also fairly intimate, but the chairs are comfy, and the seating is staggered so it makes it a lot more comfortable to sit towards the front. Of all of my years in Atlanta, I just now made it in to the Tara Cinema! I knew it was there but had never ventured in. The theater itself is old- no stadium seating, no reclining seats- but there is something kind of nice about seeing a flick in an "old school" theater. There's a sense of nostalgia involved. Tara is known for showing independent films and lesser known movies so you may not be able to find the latest Spider-Man at this theater, but sometimes it's nice to venture away from the mainstream. I particularly enjoyed that fact that there were no teenagers "hanging out" and disrupting the experience like there often are at some of the more popular theaters in town. The Tara is a great American movie cinema in my book. There are never more than 4 or 5 movies playing here at once. You can usually expect two big names feature films, one lesser known movie that appeals to a more independent clientele and probably isn't playing at the Mall of Georgia Imax (shivers) but everyone should see anyways, and one artsy film. I like the selectivity the Tara offers. The best part about the Tara is that the seats are seriously comfortable. There is so much cushioning in these little gems that you'll never want to leave. They don't recline nor is there stadium seating but they are my favorite movie theater seats in all of the land. The theaters themselves are really large for an "arts cinema". They actually seem larger than most movie theaters to me. I've been to see two movies here now- The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Silver Linings Playbook. Silver Linings was packed and during The Perks of Being a Wallflower, there were about 5 other groups. Like most theaters, Saturday matinees are insane and weekdays are basically empty. Parking is plentiful no matter when you come. Bathrooms, on the other hand, are not plentiful so you'll want to strategize your bathroom breaks. Of course the tickets will seem pricey and the concession stand will break the bank but hey its all part of the movie going experience. The employees are incredibly delightful. Many of them are older, probably retired, movie lovers who clearly love the environment they are working in. The Tara is overall a joy. read more

Don't be fooled by the outdated exterior, this is a really great theater. The inside has the feel of a classic movie theater that has been freshly renovated and includes a seating area with comfortable couches. The seats in the theaters themselves are comfortable, but not quite as plush as newer theaters. They also don't recline (which isn't a huge issue since there is not stadium seating). The real draw of this theater is the selection of independent films that aren't shown anywhere else in Atlanta. P.S. The Publix directly next door to the Tara is great for getting candy or ice cream to sneak into the theater....if that is your thing ;) read more

Tara is my first stop for top-quality foreign films, Oscar favorites, and limited releases. There are only four screens at Tara so, unlike the local 10/14/24 screen multiplexes, Tara literally doesn't have room to entertain struggle filmmaking. If it's playing at Tara you can almost guarantee it's worth seeing. In my 10+ years of going to Tara I've never seen a bad picture--from "21 Grams" to "Grand Budapest Hotel". Now I think to myself, "It has to be good, right? It's playing at Tara." If you're looking for amenities then you should look elsewhere. Don't go there expecting to see an IMAX-sized screen. Tara was built before stadium seating was standard and their screens and seats are from the pre-cell phone era. None of that bothers me much; I'm just there for the movies. Tara is your best bet for independent films in Atlanta. Showing only 4 movies at a time, this place is for movie lovers. We recently went to see "The King's Speech" which is only "mainstream" because it won the Oscar. All the other films are smaller, often foreign. The seats aren't stadium but they are cushy and comfortable, seemingly new seats in the old movie theater configuration. The place is very clean and well-kept, even the bathroom. This place has been around forever, which a) it shows and b) is surprising to me. Cons They don't have stadium seething. They don't have comfortable chairs. Not a great selection of concession food. Pros They do show films that most theaters don't. Convenient location. Recently the Commissioner and I attended a screening here and the drink machine wasn't working....... WAS NOT WORKING.... So he went over to Publix next door to get a soda. When he came back and asked for a cup of ice they charged him for a drink. Yes, you read that correctly. They charged him for a drink price ($5.50) for a cup of ice.................. bad business practice.... So if someone else goes and they show improvements let me know, but until then. "Tara, I want to go home to Tara." -- Gone With The Wind (1939) My how times have changed. I've been coming to this movie theatre for probably 25 years. I believe my first movie here was Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - odd since this movie theatre has been specializing in more independent movie for such a long time. In all my years coming here, this year has gone through a lot of iterations. Previously it was a Lafont, a United Artists and now Regal owns it. Through each incarnation, the theatres have always been smaller than most of the multiplexes around town, but bigger is not always better. However, I have avoided this theatre for many, many years because it was so outdated and the seats were uncomfortable (and squeaked when you moved). Not true anymore. Newer, cushier seats (with cup holders), a nicer and refurbished lobby and a great sound system really upgraded this theatre to compete. This time around was for a free movie screening (so already they get bonus points) and they handled it quite well. Filtering us directly to the house for the movie, our passes were scanned at the door and there was no mad dash for seats. The temperature was lovely, the sound was perfect and the theatre was immaculate. I will certainly be back again. read more
