CHECK WHAT YOU ARE EATING! I have gotten the jerk chicken before and it was fine but my friend was in the mood for ox tail so I took her there. $80 for two oxtail meals two patties and two sodas. We sat down to dig in and we both realized it clearly was not ox tail. We did our research right there and realized we were fed kangaroo tails. We brought it to their attention. I wanted to find a local Jamaican spot that had a great and affordable lunch menu. I found it with Reggae Jerk. I stopped in and when I ordered, the cashier had no idea what the Yelp Check in of $5.99 lunch was. I had to show her several times and explain it to her for her to honor the price. It usually is $6.99 for a lunch plate and it comes with a bottle of water. A great steal! I enjoyed the curry chicken with white rice and cabbage. This is a very legit jerk joint. You can't use "shack" because that screams sand and ocean and this joint is miles inland in a strip mall. Most of the people that were coming in were Jamaican. Always a good sign when people come looking for a taste of home. The dining space is very basic fast food high-top. Clean but not attractive or inviting. Likewise, takeaway plates and plastics don't give staying in much joy, unless you don't live nearby. You want this food hot. Low top tables and even a plastic checkered tablecloth or two would help this place's dine-in mojo hugely. Service was very pleasant and kind. It's not like Althea's place, now long gone, that was on the 150 restaurants to eat before you die, that was nearby. It's very businesslike and arms-length. The meal comes with cabbage which is good but served room temp. My boyfriend ordered the curry shrimp and rice, it didn't come like the menu said, but similar and seasoned well. The real deal! This small unassuming restaurant is in a strip of stores on the east side of Jog road before you come to Forrest hill as you drive north. If you are a fan of Jamaican fare, you will appreciate how great they are. If you want to learn and sample the island flavors, come here. And in south Florida, we have a few favorite places that serve similar. They do a big takeout business. People were lined up to place orders, but not many tables were taken when we came by for a late lunch. We sat at the counter. The menu is on the wall and entrees are separated by the type of meat (chicken, pork, seafood, etc.). They also have soups, salads, and a few deserts. Soup of the day, too. There are big screen TVs on the walls and A British soccer game was in full view. That's the sports bar part of the venue... Help yourself to a drink from the cooler -- everything from ting to ginger beer. And place your order at the counter (for faster service). Because they assumed we were doing takeout, our food was served in a box along with plastic ware. I ordered their brown stewed chicken and peas & rice as my side. You also get a piece of fried plantain and veggies -- sautéed green cabbage mixed with a few carrots, peas, a green bean or two. The rice was mixed together with their "peas" (what we call red beans). The star of the meal was the rich brown flavorful "lick the plate" brown sauce covering the pieces of chicken. The chicken has bones, so you find your self starting out to eat with the fork. The chicken falls off the bones in shreds. And then picking up each piece by hand to get all the last bits of meat and sauce. It's a healthy size serving -- you won't leave hungry. Thanks Yelp. We never would have found this place otherwise. I have been to this location 3x, the 3rd visit will be my last. I stopped here on 4/17 @ approximately 10:05p The sign on the door was illuminated "Open" I interrupted this to mean they're open for business. I walked in, the lady (Ms. D) behind the counter had this look on her face, not a pleasant one at that. I asked what was available, she replied " we're closed, only oxtails are available". I decided get the oxtails for my aunt who was not feeling well & too tired to drive. I asked if plantains were available, (Ms. D) replied "NO, YOU DON'T SEE WERE CLOSED! I had to advise Ms. D the sign on the door says otherwise, if you're closed turn off the damn open sign & lock the door, simple! I also advise Ms. D that if I'm a bother or nuisance I can go elsewhere. She gave me this fake smile and said I'm not a bother, the food they have is limited at this time of night, which I understand. I guess it was a long day & her feet are probably tired & needed soaking from being on them all day. TO THE OWNER: This may or may not even be taken seriously, however; plenty of our small BLACK owned businesses go under when we don't support them, based on the treatment described above, I certainly understand why. I felt like I was cheating on Curly's Caribbean but I'm glad I did. The food in this place is really, really good. They offer fresh baked Jamaican patties. I'm telling you, once you've had fresh patties you can't go back to frozen. I mean fresh out of the oven, it's so hot you can barely hold it in your hand, melt in your mouth GOOD. They also offered peanut porridge which was a first and very delicious experience for me. Their ackee and salt fish was on point, the oxtail is out of this world. Be careful paying at this place. I was there May 20, at around 6.40pm and ordered a small size oxtail meal, nothing extra. He said $9.25 and I confirmed, gave him my credit card, which I always get notifications when I use my card. But I didn't have my phone with me at that moment. Once home, I ate, food was good though, but I didn't check my phone until 9pm and I was shocked to see a charge of $19.25 for that size meal. I would have never bought it for that price. I thought about going the next day to speak to manager, but then I realized I had no receipt to proof, and I remember the cash register isn't facing customers, I guess so we can't see what they charge?Lesson learned and i Will Never order from them again! We went into Reggae Jerk from out of town after finding out that the restaurant we wanted to go to wasn't open. We were tired & stressed & ready to be disappointed BUT WOW we're we surprised! My husband had the large oxtail & I ordered the large jerk chicken & then, of course, I spied the chocolate rum cake on the counter & insisted on a slice of that as well! We topped off our meals with a Red Stripe & Jamaican Cream Soda for my husband. We decided to eat in & found out that this was a good decision because the jovial atmosphere of both the staff & patrons watching the World Cup game (Iran v Morocco) put us in the relaxed mood we needed to be in for our 2 hr ride home. What a great group of people! We joined right in & felt right at home! Now for the food, it was nothing short of A-MAZING!!! The oxtail was succulent, the sauce was awesome & the portions were perfect for two people to share; just enough to share & take some home for lunch the next day. The chicken was also very good, cooked perfectly & the flavor was really impeccable both dishes were served with the traditional peas & rice & cabbage. So good!
