(More than enough for 2 people, trust). The flavor? Excellent. The boneless curried chicken was juicy as they use chicken thighs and the spices were wonderfully balanced. The spicy pepper sauce they use adds a nice heat to the dish. I ordered the spicy pepper sauce on the side so I could adjust to my liking. The menu says the dish comes with aloo (curried potatoes) but I didn't taste any in the dish. This addition would have taken it over the top for me. Now, the double? The belle of the ball, the star of the show. One of the best I've had. So affordable too at only $3.50 My perfect bite was the curried chicken, rice, the zucchini side (I think it was zucchini lol), and a bite of the double. I was really disappointed with my experience at Curry Tabanca. They told me they would charge about a 4% fee for using my debit card. Debit card transactions are generally processed differently from credit cards, and many card network rules don't allow merchants to apply the same credit card surcharge to debit card purchases. To make matters worse, my partner placed his order over the phone, but when he arrived, he still had to wait for the food to be prepared. That defeated the purpose of ordering ahead. This cozy restaurant is located in a small strip mall off of a busy road so I was sure it would be busy, luckily when walking in, there was only one other person. The customer service could use improvement as there is a feeling of being rushed when ordering and being asked "is that it?" After each item. Ended up ordering doubles and the lunch special. Waited just a few moments and the doubles came out followed by the lo mein, rice and bbq lunch special. I first stopped by here about five years ago, and I've been hooked ever since. Not too big inside, about 5 tables, each with 4 chairs. I've never had to wait for a table but I imagine it can get busy. The doubles are my absolute favorite--I'll drive almost an hour just to enjoy them. This place gets 4 stars in food alone. It seems they recently redid the place and painted it a light baby blue and put metal chairs. That's it. Nothing else. No art in the walls, or lights to give you a cozy feeling. There is a long mirror along the left wall when you enter, that was there before they painted and that's it. It feels super bare. Plus, my husband always complains about the smell, which I don't mind, but I get it. It's like mistolin (a perfumey cleaner) and isn't conducive to being in a restaurant, instead it smells like a bathroom cleaner. With that said, the place is immaculate. I asked if it was under new management, they said no. There's an ATM machine in a corner. A guy came in and the lady behind the counter said, you don't need to use the atm we take cards now. Stopped in this awesome place to bring home some dinner. Curry shrimp with paratha and curried potatoes. It was fresh, delicious and filling. Unlike paratha from India, the West Indian paratha large and easily can fill you up on its own. Add in the amazingly yummy curried shrimp and potatoes and it's a tummy filling adventure of flavors. Out of this world! For non-Trinis unfamiliar with the Trini street food called "doubles", it's two pieces of fried dough the size of sandwich loaf bread slices filled with curried chick peas and an assortment of delicious condiments such as tamarind sauce, herbs, spicy cucumber and hot sauce to taste. I have been to Trinidad several times. My wife is from over there. Whenever I go to her homeland, I fall in love with the place over and over again- the food, the rum shops, the beautiful beaches, the chutney music and the Hindu temples. In my area of South Florida, there is a large East Indian population from Trinidad, as well as from Guyana. Consequently, several Indo-Caribbean Roti shops have thrived in the vicinity, serving up East Indian specialties, along with Caribbean- style Chinese cuisine. And Curry Tabanca is one of the stand-out locations for this type of South Asian style cuisine. Curry Tabanca is located in a small shopping plaza in Greenacres, Florida. The exterior of the restaurant is low-keyed and unadorned. Inside, the seating area is sparsely decorated with a few strings of festive lights, artificial plants and Trinidadian flags. There were big screen TVs playing lively and uplifting Soca and Chutney music videos. Unlike other roti shops I had been to, this place was clean and spotless. The people that worked there were very pleasant and helpful, checking up on us frequently, to see if we needed anything or if we were enjoying our food. We started out with a couple of classic Indian street food snacks as appetizers. We first had the doubles. These are two deep fried flat breads of flour, called Bara. In between the two Bara are savory curried chickpeas called chana, slathered with hot pepper sauce and tamarind chutney. This could be eaten as a sloppy sandwich, or pieces of the top Bara could be used to scoop up the curried chickpeas from the bottom Bara. Either way, it is delicious! Our next appetizer is one of my favorites and is related to the East Indian Samosa. It is called an Aloo pie and is a deep-fried fritter containing spicy potato, called Aloo in Hindi. The Curry Tabanca version was spicy and flavorful, and compared favorably to the Aloo pies I would enjoy while in Trinidad. Our final appetizer was the Chinese style shrimp wontons. These were fresh and hot tidbits of crispy wonton skins, fried to golden brown perfection, and contained tiny surprises of savory, succulent shrimp. These were so crunchy, and they paired exquisitely with the sweet and hot sauce they served on the side as a dipping condiment. By then, we ordered our main courses. And these were the rotis. Pretty much every roti shop has curried goat on the menu. And Curry Tabanca is no exception. The meat is slightly tougher than lamb, and bonier, but with a pleasant gamey taste. It is one of my favorite Trini meals, sided with curried aloo and paratha bus-up-shot roti. Slang for "bust-up-shirt," this flaky and tender flatbread is perfect for scooping up bits of curried goat, along with the savory and spicy curry gravy. As a side dish, we also ordered fried bhaji spinach. These were leafy greens cooked until tender and mushy and simply flavored with salt. These go perfectly well with the buss up shot roti. Another side dish was the curried mango. These were sweet and sour pieces of fresh mango, cooked in a light curry sauce and was meant as a condiment for the rest of the meal. Our last main course was the spicy curried duck. And I enjoyed my duck meat very much. The strong curry gravy was powerful and tasty, sided with some righteous curried aloo. For our flat bread, we ordered dal puri, a roti filled with ground split peas. My wife and I enjoyed our Trini meal there. The staff was very friendly and helpful, the food was excellent and authentic Trini, and, despite the lack of decorations, a festive atmosphere was created with the string lights and the Chutney music videos. We came for lunch and had a very good meal. It's really a 3 1/2 Star review, but because of its potential and my future "education" (see below), I know it will get better. This is a hole in the wall place. In a strip of stores on the north side of the street, you can easily miss it. There are only about a half dozen tables inside. Two of these are two-tops. You order at the counter. They started out bringing food to people on a tray, but as they got busy, they just called your name and you went up to the counter to claim it. And busy they were on a recent Saturday afternoon. Most of the people came and went -- doing takeout. We opted to eat in and after ordering sat down to hold the last available table. We've had lots of different Caribbean food all over the islands and here in Florida too, but not much from Trinidad. We took one of the 3 laminated menus to look at while we waited in line, but most of it was a blur. No idea what most things meant. As we were familiar with rotis, that's what we ordered. My husband got their boneless chicken and I got their goat. She asked if we wanted them wrapped or not and we said yes. She asked with it without and I had no clue what she meant. And when we asked, I didn't understand exactly the difference. So we just said okay m, one with and one without -- hedging our bets. I knew from experience that the goat would have bones. So I was prepared. And since I don't like very spicy and I love tamarind, I asked for that sauce. When our food was ready, they called our name. Each wrapped roti was huge! The "wrapper" was light and airy. I broke a hole in the middle. The meat and potatoes inside were in a delicious curry sauce slightly spicy and oh so flavorful. I dipped the meat in the sweet tamarind and it was delightful. Turns out I got the roti "with" -- this turned out to be a light dusting inside the dough of dried peas. I liked that part too. I broke off pieces of the wrapper and dipped it in the curry sauce. My husband liked his boneless chicken roti. It came with a small cup of hot sauce -- made with scotch bonnet peppers. He loves spicy things so this was perfect for him. He said it was one of the best rotis/curry sauce he'd ever had. They had a special of the day on Saturdays that looked amazing (if not messy) in the photos of "crab and dumpling". They were already out of it by the time we got there. It looks like blue crab in the shell in a sauce. Not sure what the dumpling part is however. They also have a few other days with different lunch specials each day. All meat if halal. And everything is made to order. So here's the "education" part. I plan to do some reading. What the heck is bake and buljol? What's aloopie? How about kurma? Or anchar? So, yes, we are definitely coming back. But this time with a little more knowledge of what I might like and what to order. read more
