Stepping into REI inspires me to continue spending time outdoors, with their amazing equipment and clothing, and VERY knowledgeable staff. :) It's like a wonderland for the outdoor enthusiast, other than being outdoors, of course! The staff here always make me feel so welcomed. They always make the time to answer my barrage of questions, giving me amazing tips, especially as I'm about to embark on another one of my crazy Goonie adventures. They seem to have everything you could possibly need for the outdoors: backpacks, daypacks, other packs, sleeping bags, all kinds for clothing for all kinds of weather, especially the extreme kind. They have bikes, bike gear, kayaks, canoes, cooking equipment, MRE's, snacking food, hiking poles, tents, bug spray, bear cans, hiking boots, and other footwear. They have pretty much everything, even for your pets. They offer classes and even trips to far away exotic places. I mean they pretty much have everything! Well, except fishing poles and guns. I guess there are other stores for that. What makes me love this place even more, is their philosophy AND practice for environmental stewardship. Even so, they sell quite a few items made of recyclable and even reclaimed materials. Very cool! Of course, they have an amazing exchange/return policy. But because some (maybe a lot of) people have been taking advantage, if you NEED to exchange/return an item, it must be within a year's time (the new policy, still very awesome!). Also, you can't use the heck out of something and say, "Oh, can I get a refund or do an exchange?" Be reasonable, people! I will say that I had a water bottle for over a year that shattered on the bottom portion (total freak accident) and they let me exchange the item because it was a product defect. Something very cool for this location: The Gold line is projected to go through here in 2014, right NEXT to the Arcadia REI parking lot. Woohoo! That means I won't have to drive to the other side of the world to get here! Sure, Santa Monica is closer, but the traffic is killer worse going west from my LA neighborhood! Happy trails, folks! This is the REI I grew up with and I never realized how lucky I was to have one in my city until just recently!! I'm gonna give it a two star. I'm an outdoor hobbyist and maybe even minimalist. These stores are expensive. Crazy expensive. However. If you live outside, you may need what these people sell. It may be fantastic quality. But if you have your own products with your name on it one the clearance rack, it better be dirt cheap. read more

I stopped by this REI last night in search of my firsr pair of climbing shoes - i have always rented at a gym or borrowed for outdoors. I waa greeted by sara - she was such a pleasure to deal with and was beyond friendly and helpful. She patiently showed me a plethora of options of shoes, and really helped me feel comfortable eith my choice. Because of my poor guess at shoe size, she had to keep making exchanges in the back room. REI is my candy store. Could spend hours, and a fortune there. Fortunately they have great sales. And fortunately, if you're not happy with your merchandise, you can return for full refund. It's totally worth it to be a member. You get dividends at the end of the year. Plus member coupons. The staff is usually very friendly. Helpful. Tanner helped me today, he's wonderful. He brought clothes in my size, and things on clearance that might appeal to me. Often people drop you off at the dressing room, and say let me know if you need any help...then, they disappear. Leave you hanging in your underwear when you need another size. Our cashier, Chris W, was also great. Nice wit. Other times, staff has helped us with shoes. Finding the right hiking shoe is often tricky. So many choices, but if the shoe hurts, or doesn't fit, it's not for you. Once, an REI staff member helped me select the right backpack and showed me how to customize it for my body. Just wish they were bigger, carried more inventory. Often we see something online but it's not in the store, and you really want to try it on instead of sending back and forth. And of course, more sales. read more

This is a chain. They have several locations throughout California. The have almost everything you could need for the outdoors! (I went today to see if I could get waterproof socks and gloves which I swear they had before-but alas, they don't!). They organize local and far away excursions! They do bike repair and maintenance. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful. They have various sales throughout the year and coupons if you are a member (a one-time low fee, I might add). This shop seems to have a very comprehensive selection of products, and the staff is very friendly and helpful across the board (can't say anything bad about them at all). Parking availability appears to be ample. This particular REI retail location does not appear to stock any Surefire-brand illumination tools (at least, none that I could see), which is somewhat odd, as REI's online shop does at least offer a few models for sale. I purchased all my gear for a hike to the top of Mt Kilimanjaro at this REI store. I am NOT an outdoorsy person at all, so needed a ton of help getting gear for the hike. The staff here are great in that they are very knowledgeable and helpful, but there is a bit of a wait for available staff, since they do take their time with helping customers. The return policy is fantastic as well. A few of the items had to be ordered from other stores, so I was not able to try on certain items until I was actually on the hike. Certain of the items fit me very poorly, but I was able to return them - used - with zero hassle. I am slowly becoming more of an outdoorsy person, and definitely plan to continue coming to REI for my hiking and camping needs. read more

Hands down the best retailer to buy high quality outdoor equipment. Outdoor gear can be costly but worth every penny for the comfort. I bought some keen hiking boots from here. The sales rep administered a few assessments to better recommend the right hiking shoe. Her recommendation was excellent! Customer service here is friendly and always positive. I've been coming to this place for years, but i recently discovered the REI garage sale over in Manhattan Beach and found an item i had just purchased here and had not used yet. 5 stars goes to the 2 gentlemen that worked in the Shoe dept on 9/3/17 an hour before closing time. It was my first time buying real hiking shoes and both helped me tremendously in terms of what to look for, how it should feel, and was patient with my requests to get many pairs of shoes from the back. I had a huge stack of boxes that didn't make the cut next to me. One guy, I observed, went above and beyond his Shoe dept. He helped out a teen and his family while I was still trying on shoes, and he started teaching the teen how to tie his shoelaces so it doesn't choke the ankle. Thanks for the tip! He also asked the teen if he was going to bring a backpack on his trip, and that he'd be happy to see if it's the right one and check the fit. The family went to their car and brought back a backpack they purchased elsewhere and the guy helped him get the proper fit and gave more tips. I thought that was stellar customer service. Another guy, a hippie looking one, was insanely patient with my many try-ons and questions. I finally found a pair that didn't rub against my ankle bone! Although we didn't make a purchase that night because it was closing time, we did make a REI.com order the next night. Awesome service! read more

If you sign up for their $20 membership there are a lot of perks. I also got fitted here for running shoes and I loved how hands on the store associates are. I would give FIVE STARS but not right now. Firstly, I've been an REI co-op member for 10+ years. Generally I'm a fan and love supporting their company, however on rare occasions I'll run into awkward customer service from the middle aged (they look to be around 55+) women that work there. Today I visited the store to try on the Patagonia Radalie parka in black (that I will be using in the cooler months here in CA and to bring with me when traveling as an alternate to my other heavier and warmer down Patagonia parka). I saw online that they have the XS and S in stock and based on the reviews I read, this particular style runs small (I wear an XS) but the only way to find out is to try it on in person. The woman who came to help me was Kelly (Asian). I asked if she could remove the security tags on the parkas so that I could try it on in front of the mirror. The very first thing she said to me was "Oh! you're not buying it right now?, then maybe just try it on right here"...REALLY? If I'm going to spend upwards of $200+ on a Patagonia parka I need to try it on in front of the mirror to see how it looks, get a feel of how the shoulders fit and how it wears when I have layers underneath. She finally removed the security sensors and begrudgingly handed the two parkas to me. AND THEN...as I was trying them on she walks right in front of me and closed the door of the dressing room I was standing in front of! -- mind you I was looking directly to the mirror. How flippantly rude! Because of this, I have decided that I'm going to buy it elsewhere online where I can get 20% off, no tax and free shipping. read more

I cannot rave more about this place's customer service, and that only deserves 5/5 because that's so hard to find in retail. Service: Unlike most outdoor enthusiasts who come here, I'm still largely unsure of the things I need whenever I actually need it. Cue the knowledgeable staff members who patiently explained the different types of wool sock options available, thus saving my feet in Scandinavian winter. They're a bit understaffed for such a large store and their many customers, but when you do catch an employee, they're always great about patiently answering all questions or referring you to the right expert. The employees who man the cashiers also deserve a HUGE shout out! I've seen people (and am one of them) who need slow walk-throughs with the return receipts, especially because of the dividends, and employees have always been great about patiently explaining it and walking through the math. Is this a BAIT AND SWITCH? Two days after the 2017 July 4th sale begins, I walk into REI, excited about purchasing a 40 oz. hydroflask at allegedly, 50% off. I had read it in the mailer sent to my home. I was told by a sales associate that they took it off the market because sales were astronomical on this product. He continued to tell me the sale is basically for items that don't typically sell, with the exception of a few items. REALLY?!!! I'm no longer a fan! This is a great place to shop for all sporting goods and camping gear. The employees are also incredibly nice and helpful if they see you walking around like a lost deer. I purchased some chanclas here because they were cute AND on clearance so was pretty happy about that. I went in to get sized for a backpack. JP helped me and he was super knowledgeable and friendly. I let him know that I was planning on living out of it for extended periods of time and he helped me find the right fit for my needs. He also did this while helping two other people with pack fittings, but I never felt like my questions weren't being answered. The other staff members also seemed very knowledgeable even compared to other REI locations (which are usually pretty great to be honest). Usually I love the service and products at REI but a sales associate in the camping department at the Arcadia store told me she did not have a computer in front of her and didn't want to relocate or transfer me to search on the computer for Burbank REI inventory for a specific size of an item I was looking for. She asked me to go on my computer to look myself. This isn't the type of service I've ever received at REI, I'm disappointed and hope the culture does not change at a business I use to love. read more

Been coming to the Arcadia store for years and always getting great customer service! Probably bought thousands of dollars in gear due to being a Boy Scout leader. Just a little constructive criticism. Stop by today to ask if a pair of shorts I bought developed a tear after a few washings was eligible for an exchange. The guy kinda of blew me off, I understand he was busy but could have been more customer friendly. Don't want to get anyone in trouble but he was a short Asian guy who may need a refresher in customer service. On the whole, obviously an isolated incident and will continue to shop at this great REI store. read more

Though I was excited to see this retail store finally open again during the COVID-19 epidemic, I was very disappointed to learn that the dressing rooms are closed. Thus, you can't try on any clothes (not even shoes.) The sales people suggested buying the clothes, taking them home to try on, and then bringing back what doesn't fit. No thanks. read more

Great store! So glad to have this in the SGV. From the outdoor enthusiast to the hardcore adventurist, so many items to choose from. Employees here are friendly and attentive. If they're unfamiliar with a product, they're quick to direct you to more of an expert on the matter instead of fluffing their way through something or just reading a label. They offer a fantastic return policy (which I hope people don't abuse). Parking is ample and the layout of the store is easy to navigate yourself through. It's nice to see frequent sales since things are a bit pricey and the annual dividends are a nice touch. Happy trails! read more

I went in on a Monday, mid-morning to buy some shoes. I stood in front of a pair of QC shoes I was interested in, and waited for someone to come help me. There were two people helping others, so I figured someone would approach me and ask if I needed something. I stood there for a good 10 - 15 minutes, waiting. I even caught the eye of one of the shoe salesmen, but he avoided me. The second shoe salesman walked away to talk to another employee. It took me a second, but I realized everyone around me being serviced was white. There was another POC who approached the first salesman to ask if it was okay to try on some shoes before buying them. He looked upset, but said, "Okay." I was getting frustrated by this time, and I had to leave because my baby started crying (my mom had been pushing his stroller throughout the store to keep him calm). I was going to complain at the front, but my baby was so fussy, I left. After all these years of going to this particular location, I have never experienced such disregard / disrespect. I will be taking my business elsewhere. read more
