I really enjoy shopping at REI for their products have real quality build, for the items I've purchased at least. A few weeks back I went to get a wilderness pass for the Cucamonga Peak, they didn't have it. What's worse is that they tried selling me the adventure pass even after confirming with a few other employees that this was the pass that I needed. Okay, not so knowledgeable. No big deal, I can't expect everyone there to know all the facets of every sport they sell equipment for. Then I go to ask about upgrading my road bike (the cassette specifically) at the bike section of the store. The first person I speak with doesn't know much about the parts I need so he asks another gentleman who comes out from the back. I tell him what I'm looking for and that I am new to working on upgrading my cassette and drivetrain. He looks at me and says that I will need to upgrade a lot, crosses his arms, doesn't say anything more and gives me this "I'm smarter than you look." I was pretty fed up by this point I said okay, turned my back and thanked him as he tried to reestablish a seller's "helpful" dialogue. I've come to this REI on several occasions (weekdays and weekends), and the employees have always been super helpful. They are always very patient and make sure that they've answered my questions before moving on to help somebody else. I came in on a busy Saturday to try on some hiking shoes. There were several customers wanting to try on shoes and ask questions, but there were many employees in the area who were available to help out and answer questions. Ivan was extremely knowledgeable and I ended up walking out of there with a new pair of hiking shoes that I love! Extra notes: This location is one story and has fairly good stock of everything you need. Parking has never been an issue. There are usually at least 3-4 cashiers at checkout. read more

It's been a couple hours since my experience at this REI and I'm still kind of salty about it. Customer service didn't seem like a priority (from what I was able to see and experience). If you're down for a rant... keep reading. Popped in today to grab some Nuun tablets and an adventure pass. What I thought was going to be effortless and quick turned into frustrating and a waste of my time. I was lucky enough to be stuck (yes, stuck... that's how unpleasant my experience was) with a cashier that probably thought I was a waste of her time to check out. She was a little older; really wish I grabbed her name from her name tag. She was pleasant when I first approached her counter, but when I asked for an adventure pass as well... that's when everything went down hill. First off, I asked for an adventure pass - not a metro pass. Secondly, I'm not sure how many times I had to say "yes I'm sure" to her trying to get me to purchase an annual adventure pass. I only need it for a day, so no... an annual pass would not be worth my money. Secondly, yes I know about the REI membership, and yes, I still do not see the need for me to join. Now after a few minutes of what seemed like me shooting her down, it was just attitude left and right. Eye rolls and condescending tones were thrown at me any chance she got. She could not wait to get rid of me any faster and she didn't even bother to hide that. While I was checking out, I also heard her on the phone with someone trying to get a stock check. Steve at their bike shop is awesome. I got my bike at REI and had my complimentary hour appointment for bike advice and fitting and left extremely satisfied. Steve is very knowledgeable and explains everything patiently. He also made my bike fit perfect! I thought my brand-new bike was alright but after he was done with all adjustments it was superb. So I'm a lightweight in this place but they had what I needed. Things are a little pricy, but you do get good quality for the price. Headlight styled flashlight and taillight for my 10 speed and some mirrors, water bottle and holder all for just a little under a couple hundred dollars. I tried the shirt on at home as I didn't want to try it on there because it's COVID. I then found out I was allergic to the wool material. I then took my time to return it because it's COVID. Choosing the "store pickup" option for an internet order was a mistake. The staff in Arcadia lost my package in the chaos and disorganization of their back room. Or maybe it was never shipped to Arcadia, and their computer system was wrong when it emailed me to come pick it up. Waited in the parking lot for half an hour while they rooted around and gave up. This REI has been here for a very long time. I used to come here when I lived close by, but I live in the Valley now and do not find myself out in this neck of the woods. I like that this place is smaller and on one floor. You can basically find everything you are looking for. What really sets this place apart from the newer REI's is that since it's on the smaller side, you tend to get better customer service. I'm not saying that service is horrible at the other locations, but you don't have to go searching for a rep here. Both of our reps were wonderful. They did everything in their power to answer all of our questions and were not pushy at all. My wife and I came here looking for a big backpack for her 4 day backpacking trip coming up. We were met by Kat and she spent about 30 minutes assisting my wife with the correct backpack and made sure that she was comfortable with it. She packed the bag with 35lbs. to mimic the weight of what she will be carrying. She went through multiple backpacks. After all that's said, she recommended that we book a private session with an experience guide to get their feedback on what pack to get and how to pack for the trip. read more

Once upon a time, I was really turned away from REI because of their exceptionally anti-wallet prices. However, as I've delved into the world of bouldering, hiking, and other similar exciting activities, I realize I keep coming back to REI! They have rather quality items for the prices that you pay...and I think what really sets it apart from other places I go to is that their customer service is above the rest! The folks there really know their stuff (at least that's he impression I get)! They give good tips and suggestions, and they don't try to sell you on the most expensive, top-of-the-line, newest items they carry. I've NEVER been egged on to "Check out the NEWEST one that came in!" They also have the best Customer Satisfaction Guarantee policy! I've had items that I've work for a while and if there was something wrong with the item, they'll still either refund you or exchange it for you within a year! As far as items go, they don't always carry a large selection of certain things. For example, for climbing shoes, they may only have 20 different shoes, more or less, to choose from...this includes men's, women's and children's. But if you could find what you like, I suggest you get it! Also, becoming a member gets you a bunch of great deals during certain times of the year. It also is great if you tend to buy tons of stuff from REI to rack up points! So besides a smaller selection and high prices, I'm a huge fan of REI. They keep me coming back over and over again! And it doesn't help my wallet whenever major sales happen once in a while either. read more

The REI in Rancho is great with excellent service. I went to Arcadia to pick up a Patagonia Better Sweater XL....last one and I called to confirm they had it. When I tried it on it was definitely a women's XL but there was a made sticker probably due to it being a return or something. When ai brought this to the guys attention he explained different brands have different sizing which I understand but I pointed to the sticker and told him I am very familiar with Patagonia as I have a lot of gear. So he scans the sticker only to say sorry it didn't fit then goes and puts it back on the mens rack. Lol I shared with him that I drove 50 miles just for that sweater but he definitely didn't care nor did the manager lol. Customer Service has definitely gone right out the window. read more

REI is the best place on earth, it makes me happy. It takes me back to my childhood. Picture this, you're a child out and about with daddy, to the park with rolling hills, picnic on the grass (p/b&J, carrots sticks, as well as fresh squeezed lemonade made from the lemons daddy picked from the tree in the backyard just this morning), best of all, no ants at this picnic. Afterward you and daddy stroll down the boulevard and he says, let's go into this store, reluctant you are because it looks like a big persons store. He opens the door you step in and all of a sudden you feel your eyes pop out, your jaw drop to the floor and a feeling of warm fuzzes come over you. Although the above is all made up, the feeling I get every time I walk into an REI is spot on. On top of that the working crew are always so friendly and helpful, without the hard sell. Today was the day I walked into to REI for the very first time and it was a little anti-climactic. Details: I visited this particular store on December 26th to exchange a CamelBak that my nephew gave me for Christmas. It turns out Camelbak has specific models geared and fitted for women. The one my nephew gave me was a men's version and it didn't quite fit right in the chest area. Go figure. Before I drove to the store I went online to check out all the various models. I found out they do make packs specifically for women and they have some pretty color selections. I also decided I wanted more water holding capacity after having run out of water on my last hike. Yeah, I know that I always tell people in my hiking reviews to bring enough water, but on my last hike to the top of Mt. Lukens I totally blew it. Isn't the saying "Do as I say, not as I do?". After that seemingly long trek through the mountainous desert without a horse with no name I decided I never want to experience that feeling again. Spur of the moment and hiking trips don't go together. Be prepared as the Boy Scouts say. In the end I got a girly magenta colored pack with capacity to hold 100 ounces to be on the safe side. Hopefully, I'll never have to feel the pain of a raw throat again. Also, maybe search and rescue helicopters can spot me if I collapse on a trail somewhere with this borderline glow in the dark magenta hiking bag. Service 3/5 Stars: I walked in the store and I saw a guy in his REI vest so I asked him where the rest of the Camelbaks were located. He was kind enough to walk me over to the far side of the store and then left me there all by myself. No one was really available to talk about the various day packs, so I was on my own. Thankfully, I had done a little research online and knew what I was looking for. When I brought the pack to the cashier he asked me for my receipt which I did not have. My nephew said I could just return the pack to the store without a receipt. The cashier asked me for my nephew's phone number and then he was able to retrieve the transaction information. I would have rated the service a little higher if there was a little more assistance available if needed. Products 3/5 Stars: They had quite a lot of day packs, but I zeroed in on the magenta one that I saw online with more storage and water holding capacity. They only had one left on the rack and I have no idea if they stock more inventory in a store room. I didn't really explore the store, so I can't really compare their inventory with let's say Sport Chalet as an example. If I go back in the future I will explore a little more. Customer service is on and off here, but mostly, it is very unwanted and backhandedly rude. I cannot believe how much I dislike this branch. Every time I go to this REI, my experience gets increasingly worse. Don't get me wrong, REI is a great place to go for getting all the gear for camping, biking, hiking, mountaineering, climbing, etc. BUT some of the people that work here are just so rude, elitist, and provide way too much unsolicited advice. I came in here looking for gear for my hike. I was heavily warned of the dangers and that I need special instruction and classes before attempting such a thing. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for taking preparation courses, but before stores like REI and equipment, people hiked mountains and hills without all this gear. Jesus and his disciples traveled from Bethlehem to Egypt with sandals. So the employee proceeds to lecture me further about a really helpful book. We make our way over to the library of books where she proceeds to start reading the book herself while I stand there waiting. Perhaps I did not provide her with enough conclusory statements (get out of my face statements) like, "ohhhh, ok, thanks" or "well, I will have to decide that on my own." Another time I came here with my mom because she wanted to get Keen shoes because she likes the foot support. The employee working the shoe department blatantly ignored us and helped out these teeny boopers going to space camp. Luckily, the corporation has a pretty good online website and a great shipping policy. It's best to research the item online first then select in-store pick up. This will provide the least amount of annoying-employee contact. But sometimes, for me, I like to get my hands on the item to see how durable it is and that is when I have to endure the company of the employees who love to lecture about things they do not even really know much about. I love getting advice and personal input, but when I feel pressured to make a decision on my own behalf then please leave it to me to make that decision for myself. read more

Stopped in to buy my son a new bike. We were here to get sized and drop a grand but the service was really lacking. It appeared they did not have enough employees for the influx of customers. After about 20 minutes of trying to locate a sales expert, I found one waiting on another customer. I grabbed her when she was done with the customer, told what we were looking for and she promptly referred me to a bike expert. He was busy but helped us about ten minutes later. We told him what my son was looking for in a bike as he had just had his stolen a month earlier. My son test rode one that was not to his liking and asked to try two others. Of course my expert associate was off doing other things and we waited another 15 minutes for him to return. My son test rode two others but was looking for something a little more street, not mountain or race. This is LA and if you are going to commute on a bike everyday, you need to get the correct model. It appeared REI was a little to busy to provide the great service I am accustomed to and decided to go elsewhere. I will still be a loyal customer, just not at this store. read more

REi definitely backs up there products with a easy return policy of you are not satisfied. They also offer a wide selection of free and very low cost classes on a lot of fun and adventurous stuff, you can call and ask what classes they have going on for the month. I believe once a month they have a huge yard sale in the parking lot that you can get great deals at a low price, something thing new and some used/retuned. REI is awesome. Having one so close to me is even better! This REI is smaller than most REI's I've been to, but its still pretty nice. The parking lot has plenty of parking spaces. The store seem to be split into two sides, one being for males and the other being for females. REI's prices are a little higher than you can find in other sporting good stores, but the customer service here is great, and they have plenty of items in stock. Whatever I look for in particular, and I love doing research online for the "best" items, I'm always able to find at this place. They have a lifetime membership available for a measly $20. With the membership, you can return any items without a receipt, get 10% on all your purchase in rebate form (as long as you make one purchase a year), and you also get miscellaneous coupons and discounts. If you're buying anything here, the membership is definitely worth it. If you spend $200 right off the bat, you've already made your membership cost back. read more

I really can't figure out if this store is all about outfitting serious outdoorsmen (and women) with high quality gear, or just making affluent city folk look stylish on their timeshare trips to Mammoth. Ok, so you sell legit carabiners... And then you also sell a Marmot sleeveless teal vest that looks like Marty McFly's "life preserver" mated with a Miami Marlins catcher's chest protector. The top stitching really accentuates the "smart wool" lining, too. I like coming here, because instead of finding what I walked in to purchase (spoiler alert: they don't got it...), I usually find something else to at least consider buying. "I look good in a salmon colored compression shirt, right?" asked the rodeo clown with a penchant for flair... REI is like several small marginally-stocked stores under one roof. The cycling department has some simply adorable outfits, and two (count em!) two different types of pedal clips. If they're in stock. Good luck finding anything water sports related here... Except some stylish board shorts. This is a great store for a gift card... Because really, if I'm going to spend my money, I'm going to Cabela's or BassPro or Dick's or online. It's not that I don't like REI... It's a fun place. Hiking and wanting to do some backpacking recently and one store pop in mind to find all our gear. We had planned to hike down to Havasu Falls Grand Canyon and we knew we couldn't skimp out on some proper footwear. We spent literally 3 hours in the store, could have been more if it wasn't about to close lol The staff here are super knowledgeable, especially the shoe department. After trying a dozen or so pair of shoes, we walked out with some Lowa Renegades and some superfeet. Kid me not these are the best fitting boots I ever worn. Fits like a glove and made the 10 mile hike with no blisters! We became REI members that day, and with one year guarantee satisfaction returns, even if you wear them, REI can't be beat! read more

REI has a great business model (yes, you should become a member its totally worth it) and between online purchases and this store in Arcadia I have overhauled most of my outdoor gear. As with any specialty store, certain items can be more affordably priced than others. There are times I walk in here and encounter some serious sticker shock, but I've learned to game the system by looking for sale items, shopping online at the REI outlet, or loading up during annual sales for any big ticket items. I have run into some really great service at this location (special thank you to Peter who helped fit me with my Flash 45 pack, this man knows his stuff) and others who were just so-so. Depending on the time of year, the selection here can get quite scattered or downright non-existent, so a couple times I've had to purchase items online that I intended to purchase in-store. Just a minor inconvenience if you ask me. 2014 is a big travel year for me, I'm counting on REI to help me along with way ;) read more

I did some online Christmas shopping with them early December and their contracted shipping company labelled the items as lost about a week after. Immediately, I used REI's online help chat to find a solution. One of the items was no longer in stock, however, I was able to receive a full refund. For the rest of the items, they were able to create a new order for me and have it available for pick up to my local store. Wonderful saleswoman who knew her stuff and steered me towards a great pair of Merrell shoes. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. I went back today prepared to spend some cash on some biking gear. For starters I needed new bike shoes with cleats. The sales guy who looked hungover barely glanced at me, literally waved his hand at a display and said "This is what we have for women" and continued telling his friend (co-worker?) how he is soooooooooo ready for a weekend. The guy who works the shoe department analyzed her feet, was able to tell she had a past injury in one leg, and found great shoes with great support tailored for her feet. He ripped off tags, cut up insoles, and did whatever necessary for her to have the perfect set-up. He was also an awesome guy named Mike with Hawaiian Indian heritage, who gave her the native perspective on the dig site she is headed to.
