Our shopping experience was phenomenal all thanks to the employee- Brendan in the shoe department. My Daughter's have been having a difficult time finding long distance running shoes. Brendan was patient, understanding and most importantly knowledgeable of what might be the right fit for either of them. He made our experience a super one! We became REI members all because of all the key things it has to offer and we might have not joined had it not been because of the detailed explanation given by Brendan. I volunteer with a youth group and we came here to get our youth members fitted for camping backpacks. The gentleman that helped us, Christopher, was knowledgeable and gave us all the info we needed. Stock was low due to a recent sale, but we were able to see examples of the kinds of backpacks we needed and how to wear them, and got info of what we could order online. Every staff member we encountered was friendly and seemed pleased to assist us. The prices are the only drawback--higher than I would have liked, but the quality of gear seemed high, too. Christopher was understanding, and tried to help us find affordable backpacks. I was looking for a dropper post for my MTB, found a good deal on PNW at REI online I opted for an in-store pick-up. Since the pandemic, I found curbside or in-store pick-up made it more convenient for me to spend as little time as possible at the store or none at all and just get the stuff I really need. So I went to here get my DP, a line-up of tables were outside for some reason, a dude told me to follow the marks on the floor for online order pick-up which I did, there was a little kiosk/counter for those picking-up.. I was the only one there, pressed the button to call an attendant but 5 minutes after, still no one, so I gave it another buzz until maybe 10 minutes later, someone came after I memorized the picture board right next to this counter. So I gave this young guy a copy of my online invoice, showed him my ID to prove it was me and not Batman picking-up the item, so another 15 minutes passed until he came out of the stock room... talk about expediting the the whole process, needless to say I was a little irked about the whole thing so I beelined out of there after getting what I purchased online. The product works great, it's awesome but most likely next time I'll opt for delivery for anything else that I might buy here. This used to be my go to place but their customer service is failing. FYI they don't allow you to have any kind of coffee at all inside of the store. And the woman at the front was incredibly rude. She singled me out I don't know if it's because I'm Asian or not Caucasian. And she reprimanded me and said "make sure your mask stays up". My mask was never down. Relax lady. On another note. They you happen to have almost everything that I need for my outdoor adventures. Whether you're on the water, land or in the air, there's always something at REI that you can use. Parking is always free at this location. The parking lot is absolutely humongous. Chris in the Bicycle department is a MIRACLE WORKER ‍ The Saris M2 trainer I purchased was missing the power cord, and after driving 1.5 hours from Hermosa Beach to Burbank to buy a replacement, I got home and realized it was the wrong one (100% my fault, not theirs.) Chris stayed on the phone with me for a full HALF HOUR to refund the cost of a replacement charger + shipping from the manufacturer so that I could get a new one in time for my team's triathlon training day. It's time to upgrade my running shoes to hiking shoes because of the many mountain trails we hike on the weekends. All these negative reviews are doing too much. Idk if these rei customers have a stick up their butt, but my experience with this staff was great. They're very chill and positive. Great vibes/service. They won't come up to you unless you ask them for help (I assume to give you space while searching for your items). They didn't offer me a bag which is fine because I prefer less waste. The other cashier however asked my bf and I if we'd like a box. They will keep asking if you're interested in becoming a member but that's their job. Overall satisfied. Will come again in the future! :) read more

Great store for any outdoor supplies. The staff here is very helpful and they are following every necessary protocol to keep their customers safe during this pandemic. I saw employees cleaning/sanitizing high traffic areas throughout the store and everyone was wearing masks. I have been here a couple of times and one visit was specifically for a return. The cashier was very polite and helpful in showing me different options that might suit my needs. I didn't end up buying anything but I enjoyed my experience and will definitely go back before my 2021 camping trip! read more

REI - Great selection here! - Outdoor Gear Near Me - Burbank, California

So I've learned a couple of things recently about the Burbank REI that I didn't know and have influenced this review (it was going to be a 3 star review), but these additional things have bumped it up to a 4 star. The first thing I've learned is that they have a bike shop in the store, which I didn't know, and is apparently a special thing that not all REIs have. That's pretty cool. The second thing is that apparently (although it doesn't feel like it) this is one of the larger REI locations in the Los Angeles area (more in this later). So, just in general let me say that I LOVE REI. I absolutely love this place. I love camping, hiking, etc... I love their clothes, love their shoe section. REIs are great and this place is no different. So why not 5 stars? Well there's a couple of reasons, all of which are going to build off one another (but I'll try to put them in order of influence). 1) Difficult to find staff members. One of the benefits of going to REI is that you can pick the brain of an "expert" on that new piece of hear you're looking at getting. You can get some input from someone who in theory at least knows more than you do. This is better than shopping online when you're looking at a sleeping bag and you want to know what it's pros/cons are, or if someone has a recommend. This advantage is negated when you can't find anyone that works here. Maybe they're reducing the number of employees due to COVID but I've had a difficult time finding someone to help on more than one occasion. NOW, when you do manage to locate a staff member they are USUALLY friendly and helpful. (With a couple notable exceptions). Which again is the reason you go to REI, right? As for the exceptions: I have interacted with two staff members at this store that were fairly condescending and I would say bordering on rude. One of them in particular after he was done helping my wife she said to me, "That guy was a jerk." I didn't think he was a "jerk" necessarily, but the feeling from him every time we asked a question was definitely that our question was stupid. In my memory he even rolled his eyes once or twice. Did that actually happen? Probably not, but that was the feeling I got. 2) Poor floor layout. I have been reliably informed that this is actually one of the larger REI locations. Which is funny to me because it FEELS small. Things are poorly laid out and it feels very difficult to find things. The tent section is split into two different areas which is divided by another section. There doesn't feel like there's any open floor space anywhere and I always feel like I'm tripping over something or someone. The one area this doesn't apply to is the shoe section, which is nice and spacious. I almost feel like they could take a little bit of real estate away from the shoes and give it to something else. The checkout line is similarly a nightmare. It can be very difficult (especially when they're busy) to even know if you're in the right line. 3) Limited selection. Now, maybe this is because they're such a busy store and they're always sold out of items? But if they're one of the larger stores they sure do seem to have a limited selection (especially in clothes I feel). There have been several occasions that I've gone into the store to buy something and then ended up buying it off the REI website. 4) Horrible parking lot. This parking lot is terrible. It's shared with the rest of the promenade and it's a nightmare to get in and out of. The total drive from my house to REI is 20 minutes and 8 of those minutes are just the left turn into the parking lot. And getting out isn't any better. 5) Bad location. This applies to the whole promenade but REI suffers as well. With the entire frontage of this location being up against the freeway there's only two ways in and out for ALL of the businesses. This leads to overly congested traffic and a difficult time actually getting to the store. These 5 items lead to a pretty stressful shopping experience, and who wants to be stressed when they're going to REI? For me? This is still the closest REI to my house so I'll probably end up here occasionally but I have now gone to the Woodland Hills REI (which is about 10 miles farther away for me) instead on multiple occasions. One last thing about REI: Get the membership. If you're ever going to buy more than one thing at REI in a year, GET THE MEMBERSHIP. It's incredibly worth it. read more

You can also get a lifetime membership for $20 and you'll receive a yearly dividend derived from items you purchased. I've been in this REI a hand full of times since they opened. I love REI's I'm definitely an outdoor enthusiast. Where can I run, where can I bike, where can I hike, most recently where can I skate (send me all the smooth surfaces please!)? We stopped in to check out the holiday sale and pick up a few items. They always have great hat options and water bottles. We picked up a few new Nalgenes and Hydroflask. My latest tip is shop in the kids department if you can. You can totally save some money. I found the kids hats to be super cute (pattern prints and multi color) and they are a lot less than the adult hats. I have a ton of hair and somehow still managed to get a big kid size to fit and saved maximum dollars. Also, if you have kids these hats are just so adorable. They mentioned being sold out of bikes at the moment, thank gosh we already have bikes and don't need them as they said it would be about a 2 week wait. There is an express returns line so by pass the lengthy line if that's all you're here to do. I also spotted a new coffee set up in the front. Genius!!!! I didn't see anyone working at it, not sure if it's open through all of this covid stuff but it's such a nice touch. Great service, fun items, I could literally spend hours in this store. REI had curbside pickup. I ordered a grounded travel chair. It was beige with blue online, however, they gave me a black with blue. I suppose for the park and beach, it'll do fine. It's low... What else? My leather sandals were somewhat scuffed but that happens with natural stuff. Maybe it should have been boxed, especially for the price. Everything else was in there. My camera wasn't working at REI, but worked in the rest of Burbank Empire Center. The REI parking lot was set up like a drivers ed course. The staff was masked, friendly and quick for great customer service. Saturday afternoon, I went to REI for a return. I bought a pair of everyday women's pants that were made of like neoprene. So, it's not actually everyday pants. Well, REI was open with many employees working (10am to 6pm) but the Burbank location is only dealing with curbside pickup. I love REI and have been shopping at so many of their locations for more than 30 years. It just feels so good to be inside an REI store--makes you want to do something fun and be active. REI is one of my main shopping stores. This was my first time at the new Burbank location. It's a nice store all on one level with easy free parking. Staff was very helpful. It's in a shopping center with other large stores like Lowe's and Staples. Some people think REI is expensive--put it's actually cheap. The quality of their stuff is so great it will last you many many years--maybe your whole life. I have some REI and Patagonia shirts from 1990 that still look and perform great. Much better idea than to buy all that poorly made crap on Amazon that may cost 1/2 the price but won't perform as well and you will need to replace over and over--end up costing you much more than REI in the end. Buy high quality is the way to successful financial management not trying to save a dollar and sacrificing quality. Check out this nice Burbank store. Now here is my REI tent story: 7 years ago REI held a tent sale so I bought a 2 person tent. I practiced setting it up and putting it away in my living room. My friend asked me, "David, why did you buy a tent--you don't ever camp?" I said everyone needs a tent even if you don't camp. Tent is very practical to have--let's say you want to sleep over someones house and they don't have a extra room--set up the tent in their bedroom. OR let's say there is an earthquake and your place falls down--set up the tent outside and get some sleep. OR let's say you are socializing with a bunch of outdoor type people and they are talking about camping and parks--you can just interject--"oh yea, I have this great tent from REI," and they will be immediately impressed. PS Don't come here a half hour before they close and expect to shop. With the Covid-19 rules you may end up on a long line (that I saw leaving) and get in right before they close. Come early--at least an hour before they close is the best way to handle things now. read more

The layout of this store is very poorly conceived. It is chaotic and it's impossible to find anything specific. There are no signs labeling any section (bike vs hike vs swim etc). This store still thinks it's 2020, half the employees are wearing masks. The greeter is wearing a mask , it's the most ridiculous situation imaginable, on top of that the selection of everything is lousy. Half the shoes are made from recycled materials, which might be ok if they didn't look and feel like they were made of recycled materials. I love REI and their sales, but this store had a poor reopening. The wait in line was about 40 minutes, and they don't ask you what you want until you get to the very end of the line. So, after the 40 minute wait when you're at the very front, they ask what you're buying and what section you're going to. If you're getting any footwear, tag on an extra 10+ minutes (which is why I originally went to REI - that is something that should be told when you enter line). Some people learned items were sold out (almost no bikes, limited supply of certain camping supplies like chairs/tents). I don't blame them for not being fully stocked considering it's a madhouse for anything in this covid 19 era, but customers should be told what to expect before they are subjected to wait. That being said, everyone was nice and helpful. And, of course, I love REI and their deals. They always have top quality gear, so I still managed to snag some good finds. read more

This is a REI coop store, located in the huge shopping center which also houses Target and Lowe's, off the I-5 at the Burbank Blvd exit. The staff are mega friendly and willing to help. This location has a lot of items. You name it, they probably have it. And probably too many choices and colors to make life easy. I can't say it's easy to find anything since there aren't any signs that point you in the right direction, but like I mentioned, the staff are knowledgeable and can point you in the right direction. So I made the error of arriving at REI to buy a Yeti thermos at 9:35AM. The doors were open, the close spaces in the lot were full up except for the four in the immediate front of the doors. An associate kindly called out me that they open at 10:00AM. Gosh, when I was a kid, I managed a retail business, and we ALL parked as far away from the doors as possible so our customers could have convenient parking. Not so here. Associates rule! read more

They just opened so the fitting rooms were spotless and so was the restrooms. Plenty of parking out front. Seating area outside the front doors & in the middle of the store. Can I start off by saying FABULOUS!!! I was able to attend tonight's soft opening of the store and was blown away by all of the sales associates and staff. I was greeted with smiles from start to finish. No question I had went unanswered, and if I couldn't find what I needed in the store, it was immediately looked up for online and made accessible to me. REI management job well done!!! If you can keep up this pace you're going to get 5 stars across the board from everyone.
