After in-depth discussions with Kira about various options, what the options would cost and how the choices would affect my biking experience we made a plan to move forward. We came into REI after we had dinner next door. We just came to walk around. We have never been in this REI before. The place looks nice. It has every outdoor thing you are looking for. They have camping gear, hiking, biking, clothing, etc. They have a wide variety of equipment. We were greeted by a staff member and he explained their one time fee REI program to become a member. When you are a member, you get discounts, free shipping on orders, and 100% satisfaction guarantee. The membership is $30. The store is clean and well organized. The staff are friendly and willing to assist customers. They have a recycle area of gently used sports equipment for resale and an area for returned items for resale. I would shop here if I need something for my outdoor active and take advantage of the membership if I shopped here often. read more

I came here to buy shoes and patiently waited for an employee because he was already helping another customer before me. I even left my husband there so he could ask for my size while I continued looking around. When I came back, he still hadn't been helped, but I noticed the employee assisted another customer instead. What disappointed me most was that we were never acknowledged. The employee could clearly see and hear us, but never once said, "I'll be with you shortly" or anything similar. I even purposely said a little louder to my husband that I needed a size 7, hoping for at least some acknowledgment. I eventually looked for another employee, who said he would find someone to help us, but no one ever came. By then, my husband was already irritated because we had been waiting for about 15 minutes. I understand employees may be on lunch break and that the shoe department can get busy, but a simple acknowledgment and better customer service would have made a big difference. This is actually my second time here, and almost the same thing happened before -- we had to ask multiple times just to get help. I don't know if it's because I'm Asian, and I'm not trying to be overly sensitive, but it honestly crossed my mind because of how ignored we felt. Unfortunately, this experience was enough for me. A new addition to the neighborhood at least to me. This wasn't here when I use to live in the Sacramento area. I like that Elk Grove got an REI. It is a decent sized one. Medium size, not the biggest but not the smallest either. The staff were friendly and helpful. Plenty of parking in this center. read more

I signed up as a member but fell ill for a couple of months. I was finally able to return to the store after a friend was kind enough to come with me. I had a $30 , 'courtesy card' that was supposed to offset the price of my membership. It sat in my wallet for a couple of months while I recovered from my illness and hospitalization. Apparently, it expired on March 30th. I was told it was good for 12 months. I had no reason to believe otherwise. Unfortunately, they refused to extend it or honor it. I will not return to purchase anything from REI online or in the store. I was treated as though they had my membership and nothing else mattered. They're way overpriced and overrated. read more

I've been meaning to get some new biking gloves and a helmet for the longest time but kept putting it off until I finally decided to get it done today. I have to say I'm very impressed by this store with it being my first time visiting. I was immediately greeted by all the staff members who were near the entrance. One of the associates, Renee, asked what brought me in and I told her. She kindly walked me over to the biking section of their store showing off different items. She then asked if I was a member and proceeded to explain membership benefits after I informed her that I didn't know what the membership entailed so their service is excellent. Everyone was kind and informative. They have an extensive selection of outdoor sporting goods accessories and clothing. I thought the membership was a good value since it's just a one time purchase at $30 and they had a special where if you spent $50 in addition to joining you'd get the $30 back in a promotional gift card so I bought my helmet and gloves in addition to a membership. While I'm glad I joined and enjoyed their selection of items they had on clearance, I will admit that their prices can be on the higher end. That wasn't something I was expecting to see even within their clearance and slightly used items. I'm sure the quality is definitely there but those prices caught me off guard. However, even with those unexpectedly higher prices on merchandise, I still felt like it was worth shopping there due to their excellent service, membership perks, and higher quality products in comparison to other retailers that might offer lower prices but you'll eventually pay for that with poor service and quality. New REI in EG! REI had their Grand Opening event July 25-26th. They had vendors out front (9am-5pm) and some fun giveaways/games. Located in the same lot as Best Buy off Elk Grove Blvd. Good selection. Store is clean and organized. Friendly staff. Glad EG is now home to an REI to meet our outdoor-gear needs (but doesn't have as wide of a selection as the Sac location by Arden). read more

My wife & I were lucky to be present for the grand opening of a new REI retail store in Elk Grove... The store is very nicely displayed with all of the apparel available. Large selection of sizing and colors. I found my favorite branded clothing here at the REI store so I can shop locally which is nice!!! This store is a great place to get all your hiking and camping gears. They have a lot of different outdoors brand like Arcteryx, Patagonia, North Face, and more. It's a big store and very organized. Their bathroom is also extremely clean. Workers are nice and helpful. read more

It's nice that we get an REI here in Elk Grove. I would say it is on the smaller side for an REI, but it's got the high yield items you would want for camping, hiking, biking, running. I noticed they did have some clearance items and second hand items already, which is nice for cost conscious customers. The store is pretty organized and very clean. Can't say much about the service, as I didn't buy anything on this trip. Plenty of parking as this is located in a large plaza. read more

01.25.2026 - REI - ELK GROVE, CA - An excuse to buy my hiking shoes new laces. I was delighted that REI is now in Elk Grove. Walked right in and saw it appears a little smaller than the one near Arden. But I'm not very good with my spacial perspective. It's winter late January so of course you don't see a lot of the fun stuff like kayaks and stand up paddle boards. But they do have camping gear, winter clothes, sleeping bags, and more. I love going to REI during the spring time when they start showing off their outdoorsy sport equipment. There were also bikes too. I came here for new laces for my hiking shoes. My cat love chewing strings for some reason and he loved chewing my hiking laces. So I went to the shoe department. There was only one woman working in the department. She appeared busy. When she returned with a shoe box in her hands, I said lightly in her passing by me, "How do you decide how long your laces should be?" She said she acknowledged my question and politely said, she will be right back. She was able to multi task and returned within a minute and said, "Well it depends on you. Some people love long laces so they can make more support or some don't care and just get the standard 60 inches." I said ok that sounds good. She sounded like she was in a happy mood. Which was very helpful on a day that super cold outside. She was very pleasant. I shouldve remembered her name. She was great. She also asked if I had an REI membership number, and I told her yes. She said, If you dont like the length when you get home, you can always still return them and get a better length thats right for me. I was happy to hear that. She was pleasant and wonderful! I bought the longer laces that is at 74 inches. I got home and tried out the laces. It was great! I can tuck in the laces or tie it again twice. It was perfect. I made the right choice. This is a great REI store. read more

Glad there's a REI now in EG! Their selection seemed a little limited, but regardless, it's closer than driving to Arden or Roseville. It's not as big as Cal Expo, but slightly larger than Roseville for reference. Ample parking lot and easy to access. read more

I came here with my dad, an REI co-op member of many years, on 11/29 to return running shoes after purchasing them 3 weeks ago. He was denied a refund by the cashier, Chelsea, because some mud was present on the bottom of the shoes. This was questionable, as he had returned items with visible signs of use before at the Sacramento location with no trouble, and had seen shoes in the used gear section in worse condition. He had only used the shoes twice; they were still in very good condition and were "usable for someone else" - per the manager's requirement for a refund. At this time, a different cashier told my dad to go home, clean the shoes, and come back. He went outside, knocked off the dirt, then went to the bathroom and rinsed it off. When he came back to the counter, Chelsea ignored my dad, stared at the shoes, and walked away. Chelsea brought over her manager and told my dad they cannot accept anything wet, in contradiction to the other cashier saying my dad could rinse them off and bring them back. The manager told my dad that if he is going to return something, he needs to make sure all the dirt and mud are off, but they'll "make an exception this time" - only after my dad had to dispute his refund. Clearly, this is not a consistently followed rule, as the attached images show shoes on the used gear rack that still have mud present. Why were these shoes accepted, but my dad was denied? If the rule is that items cannot be accepted with any visible signs of use, that's okay. What is not okay is picking and choosing who you accept used gear from. The arbitrary application of these rules makes me wonder if the fact that my dad is Mexican had anything to do with this. I didn't think racism was what the "spirit of the co-op" meant, but I guess I was wrong. read more

Not a true REI! No snow sports, no boats, & most importantly NO product knowledge. I asked a hostess about new raincoat technology since I have an old gore-tex jacket. No info about H2No, Pertex, or OutDry; she just led me to the rain gear and said here they are & proceeded to walk away. If you are truly into outdoor adventure, take the time to hit the REI at Cal Expo. Employees there know the products & actually use them.
