Review is location specific. Otherwise I adore REI as a company. Asked a specialist about e-bikes. Was prepared to spend $2k on a new bike. Right before handing over my cc I noticed the 'M' on the tag and asked to clarify whether that meant "Men" or "Medium." He said "medium" and I noticed the max recommended height was 5'9". So I asked why he would try to sell me an expensive bike when I was obviously about his height (maybe an inch or 2 shorter). He said his job wasn't to sell me anything. No but your job is to educate customers and help them leave the store with a purchase they'll be happy with. REI staff is normally great. One bad apple that could use some training here tho. read more

Wow! Had the absolute best customer experience I've had in my life here with JD - super knowledgeable and helpful both in and out of REI! My group and I were climbing over at Kraft Boulders, and I was attempting to set up a top rope on Plumber's Crack on Split Boulder to prevent the possibility of a 25 ft drop. Once I got up there, I realized that we didn't have the proper gear to set up an anchor. JD was also climbing the route and happened to overhear me yelling down to the ground, and offered us some of his own personal gear to set up the anchor. He sat at the top with me and chatted while making sure I was setting up the gear correctly, and left us with a bunch of his own stuff with the promise that we'd drop by REI later in the day and return it to him. After a long day of bouldering, we dropped by the REI and found JD to return the gear. He continued to be extremely helpful in the store, asking our many questions about camping stoves, how to start a sport rack, and what ropes to buy. After hearing about our plans to go lead climbing the next day, he even took the time to pull out some books and point out directions as well as some nearby bouldering areas. We ended up spending ~$500 in total to start our sport racks, and converted one friend to an REI Co-op membership. Everyone else in the store was really friendly and helpful as well! Neha and the other lady at the bike station are exceptionally helpful, and went above and beyond for me, trying to help me with my complicated situation over the phone. As for the store policies and prices, it's unclear how a full bike tune-up at $140 is more than each of the component parts. What I mean is, you can get all breaks, all detaileur, etc all tuned and it adds up to less than $140. I'm just not clear on what that extra price gets you. We were there last night looking for a hiking backpack or waterproof cover and didn't really know what we were doing. Jessi came over and helped us and provided the best experience! She taught us about the sizes, features, and measured my husband for the right size. Then she added some weight bags to the backpacks so he could feel what it would be like when it was loaded up. This location might have the best staff anywhere. We came here since we're new to town and started going hiking quite a bit. We needed a backpack, some clothes and really some advice on what to wear. We found an amazing associate who helped us with everything. He sold us on a lifetime membership which was easy but also helped us getting our items. They had a really large selection of hiking gear. My biggest complaint which also could've been due to the time of the year, for both of us (mens and womens) we couldn't buy our first choice of pants because they were sold out. They did offer to order and send to us, but we really wanted to try it on before buying it. Minimal thing, we ended up going with our second choices which were just as good. I have been a member for years and have enjoyed the culture of this company in every state I've lived in. This is a company that lives in a "hashtag" nation. The company itself spouts inclusion, all are welcome, they garnish buttons on their vests of pride and acceptance of all races, genders, and sexuality. The staff is encouraged to be unique and know they are in a safe space. What I discovered is that this mentality of compassion, understanding, and empathy only goes so far. Our state has mandated masks. I am not able to wear a mask. I was asked when walking in the door and I informed them that I could not. I was told that I could come in but to know "that you may not receive the level of service you're used to" due to employees not wanting to come in contact. Fair. I accepted the rules. The young lady then proceeds to get on the radio (which you can hear throughout the store because they are all on and I could hear every word). Telling the entire staff that a customer is here without a mask and "if you don't feel comfortable working with her, don't". I knew what I needed. Picked up my item and was there less than 5 minutes. I walk up to the counter to check out. We are separated by a partition made of plexiglass as well as a table they have put in front of the counter to create even more distance. The young lady backs up and refused to help me. She calls over someone else. This man looks at me and tells me to put on a mask. I explain that I've already had this discussion and the situation. I tell him it is super clear that I am not welcome in this store. And if that is the case, I am happy to leave and find my gear elsewhere. This was a very civil interaction. I spoke respectfully. There was such a thick air of discomfort that another young man behind the counter was clearly trying to make up for how awful that staff was being by offering more assistance. He was extremely kind and clearly uncomfortable himself. I was made to feel extremely unwanted, uncomfortable, and very discriminated against because of my personal situation. Where is the REI understanding, inclusion, and openness that is there for every other social media hashtag that's represented? This is quite obvious from the top down and an accepted behavior at this location. I was out of town and decided to bring the gear back to an alternate location. When asked why I was returning I took a deep sigh and shared my story. She was STUNNED! I decided I would just speak with my dollars. I was not going to say anything online but after speaking with the young lady at the other location, I felt I should share. There is so much more to this story and I'm not being as detailed or articulate as I am frustrated with how REI has handled this. If you are going to wear the cute buttons and create the hashtags, maybe you should SHOW up, do your best, be true to your word and operate with integrity. REI, you have lost your values, integrity, and grace when dealing with adversity. Apply that same love to everyone that walks through the door. You never know what someone else is dealing with. My first shopping experience at this store may have just made me a lifelong customer. I think I'd shied away from shopping here in the past because I thought it would be super expensive. Like most stores, REI has some items that, perhaps, you might decide to buy less expensive versions of on Amazon. However, the quality of REI's equipment, clothing, shoes, and gear is TOP NOTCH, and for certain items - you probably should buy the best version your money can afford (especially when your health or safety are involved, and you're planning to be doing a risky sport activity or disappearing into the wild for a while!) Also, the customer service is unbeatable. I'll speak to that more in a minute, but bottom line: this is the kind of co-op/store I actually want to give my money to. I recently went to the Summerlin location to shop for some things for an upcoming trip to Kauai. Ken was so sweet and helpful in the hiking shoe area and also let me know how the structure of the store works (no commission, REI members get extra perks, take my time and ask zillions of questions - I'm not bothering anyone, etc.) I really felt un-pressured, which was great because I'm someone who stares at items and compares them for a long time before buying them. In this case, I didn't even end up buying shoes in the store that day; I bought them from REI online the following day, to get the exact style/color I wanted. But I don't think I would have done that if I hadn't spent time looking at them in the store and having questions answered first. The gal in the clothing section was also awesome. I can't remember her name... I think she said she was from Serbia. Anyway, she helped me pick out the perfect hiking pants. And, whoever was introduced as the "mountain man" who helped me with the water purification systems and water bladders was so nice and knowledgeable. I ended up signing up as a co-op member (it's only $20 for a lifelong membership) and you get your membership fee back as a credit towards the store - so it's a win-win situation. Any REI will always have an awesome place in my heart. As you walk in you see the monthly display created by the the staff. Store is keep clean. Went to get some shock cord and went to check what was on display or what they sell. The floor models where missing. There where a few items that seemed like a gap filler. Jim who is an older gentlemen then me greeted me as we cross path and help me cut the cord that I needed. Talking over the company walkie that he will be helping me and won't be on the floor in his department. There was another person who help me with head lamps and answered my questions. With a smile and that made me feel awesome. As I soon check out female cashier seemed to over with the day and just wasn't having it with her co-cashier. I smiled and greeted her as I walk up. As I was doing my checking out process I selected email. Which I usually do now now that I have My two kids and myself in a members of the awesome REI. Frustrating time to buy bikes. Ordered 2 online both back ordered . My wife's bike delivered to store 2-3 weeks later but mine got cancelled within 30 days. However the same bike randomly showed up in my size online the same day my order was cancelled. I guess they don't ship between stores. My bike had to ship to home but I dropped it off at the store once delivered and they had it ready for me the next day. I made the mistake of tinkering with my bike the night before a big ride. Around 8 pm I realized that most bike shops were closed and then I remembered REI. I called and spoke with Andy and he said if I could get there by 8:45 he would be there and try to help me. Thankfully I live close and arrived around 8:15. Until closing Andy worked on my bike, explained what was happening, what he did and the steps I would need to take to get it back to where it was before I brought it in. I left confident that I would make it through my ride, Tour de Summerlin, the next day with no issues and I did. This was my first time in REI and I was really impressed! I was on the hunt for work shoes and was interested in Hoka shoes and this was the only place in town that had a lot in stock. I've loved REI since Cal days of road trips up to Mt Tamalpais and the relative ease of renting equipment for fly-by-the-seat-of-our-pants camping trips. Years later, my idea of lodging roughing it is more akin to a hotel lacking room service, but REI is still my outdoor sports supply Mecca. Their membership certainly has privileges and is pretty rad! The points/$ add up, they even send you reminder snail mail so you use and don't lose them! I've always found the staff super helpful and not up selling, rather assuring needs are met. Prices can be high, but their return policies are awesome. When they have the Semi Annual Garage Sale, I always find hiking gear, a new Camelback bladder, gels or a variety of things I'll use. I came here to pick up a new knife, but the staff said they couldn't help me, that I would have to use curbside because I didn't have my mask covering my nose. I have asthma, and wearing a mask makes it where I'm struggling to breathe within minutes. However, in trying to comply with the current times I wear a mask but keep it under my nose so I can still breathe. Not only is this against government mandates, it's against ADA laws. If you're a hipster with a Swiss Army knife keychain, a Northface tee, and a stand-up paddle boarding habit, this may be your favorite store. However, for those of us who merely entertain a seasonal interest in the outdoors, this place wasn't up to par. Considering the price point and specialized nature of the products in this store, I expected more in the way of customer service. As in I expected to get some in general but received none. I love combining hiking with water, and was looking into whether it would be worth it to buy my own kayak. Hung around the kayak section for nearly a half-hour, checked out prices, looked at straps to transport it, but was never asked if I needed help or had any questions. Kayaks, for those of us who didn't know, are generally about $400 here while stand-up paddleboards will apparently run you into the quadruple digits. Again, with prices like that, I shouldn't have to wonder if I can transport such a purchase on my own car, someone should have that info and be interested in sharing it with me. Did my own research here, and I'll likely continue to rent as needed rather than purchase, but even if I changed my mind I wouldn't be inclined to bring my business here. read more

Most people associate this place with camping, but believe me, I'm not a camper and I still find plenty of things here to spend money on for running, hiking, cycling, triathlon, and general fitness. What I like about REI: -Amazing return policy: If you're not 100% satisfied with your purchase, REI will take it back, no questions asked, within one year of purchase. If you bought something from them on-line and need to exchange or return it, you can do so at any of their stores with a receipt. Also, if you find an item on-line to purchase, you can save shipping costs by having it sent to the store where you can pick it up; an e-mail notice is sent to you when it gets there. I've done this many times and items are usually there within 5 days or less. -Although you don't need to be a member to shop here, there are benefits to spending $20 once for an REI lifetime membership. Reap membership rewards, namely an annual dividend check that equals 10% on purchases. Depending on if you spent a little or a lot the previous year, your check is a nice little bonus either way. I don't get a check like that from any other store and when it arrives, it's like Christmas in March. Members also get special deals, as well as discounts on their bike shop services and in-store classes. -Classes held at the store on a regular basis include Hands-on Bike Maintenance. I took this class a few years back and it was a great way to practice changing a flat tire as well as cleaning the chain, when to lube it, what to lube it with, and other basic bike info. Customers bring their own bikes to class and the store mechanics are the teachers. Other class topics can range from backcountry skills, mental prep for triathletes, to preventing running injuries and how to cook with a Dutch oven when camping. Check the store's website for current class offerings, many of which are free of charge. -I come here often for what REI calls "energy food." My go-to's are Clif and Hammer gels, Hammer HEED electrolyte mix, Jelly Belly Sport Beans, and Honey Stinger waffles. You can get 10% off when you buy 10 or more of items like these as long as they're not already on sale. The staff here is extremely helpful and the store is always in great condition. You can shop the sales racks for bargains on clothes, which I usually don't buy here unless they are on sale. I'm glad this store is located at Boca Park, because it's convenient for me to get to when I need an item or two before heading out for more fun in the sun. read more

I discovered REI about six years ago and immediately signed up for their Membership. (I was heading out to Africa and needed some serious supplies - they had it all.) When I moved to Vegas, I was glad to discover not one, but two REIs here. I love walking through this store - it can get dangerous though because I just want to buy random crap. (Y'know, stuff you don't need but think is really cool to have.) Things are a bit more expensive here, and sales can be just okay or really good. Their annual (or bi-annual) garage sales are definitely worth taking a look at too. I've spent a bit more time at this particular location and speaking to the staff - I purchased my first bicycle from them! I got measured properly to find my correct height and realized that a child's bike fit my stature better! (We spent the summer biking all around our neighborhood!) They have a really good group working there - so friendly and just eager to help out. Love that attitude! I also bought my first snowboard and boots from them! They also have various classes going on each month and I've managed to attend a few of them - quite educational and sometimes you get a little gift at the end! I also love their fabulous return policy, easy as pie! And they also allow you to ship to a store for free pick up, which is definitely a plus! Have not shopped here in forever. Maybe 5 years? It was always just so expensive. Okay, so it is pricey, but they sell high quality items. We are going on a trip to Alaska soon, and we needed to get some things for cooler weather. My husband is an amateur body builder of sorts...works out daily and has huge traps, shoulders and chest. We are in our late 40s though, and have our tummys that we would rather not talk about. What I'm trying to say, is that it is difficult finding clothes for him. Not here though. Clothes here fit better than most anywhere else we have found for his body type. We were able to find a lot of things on clearance for winter time, since it is currently 110 degrees here. Went there today to look for a bike for my son and some hiking shoes. The young man that helped with the bike was very kind and helpful sadly I didn't get his name. Then when I went to look for hiking shoes, I asked an older guy who I think was Asian for a size for two different shoes. He kept trying to talk me out of the shoes even though I said it was fine so I had to keep asking if I can just see the shoes. He even asked what I wanted them for. So ends up going to the back for the shoes and sets them down on a bench away from where I was and didn't bother telling me. He helped another family out and was very friendly with them. While I was trying on the shoes he made a comment about me and my boyfriend saying that we just don't understand (I'm assuming he meant about the hiking shoes) we ended up just leaving but it was very upsetting that he acted that way towards us. read more

REI is an amazing store! I wish more stores were run the way REI is run. Here are some of the highlights: 1. The store is beautiful and always spotless. No matter what department you are in, the displays are always stocked and well organized, so you can find whatever you are looking for. If you do need some help, an employee is never more than a few feet away to help you. In fact, you will probably walk out with extra stuff that you found and just had to have because it was so cool! 2. The quality of the items they sell. REI only sells the cream of the crop merchandise. You know you are getting great stuff, be it clothing, sleeping bags, binoculars, or whatever it is you are getting. In fact REI guarantees everything they sell and will accept anything you return, even if is damaged. We have bought all sorts of stuff from here and we have never had a problem with anything. In fact, most of our stuff is still like new, even after a lot of use. Yes, a lot of stuff is expensive, but you will only have to buy it once, so its totally worth it! 3. The staff. The staff here are the bee's knees! Everyone is super helpful and happy, no matter what time of day you go. Everyone is super knowledgeable and can really give you some good tips to make sure you get what you will need. I have never gotten less than 100% from any employee I have encountered here. What a nice change from some other places! 4. The membership club. REI offers a membership club that actually makes you a part owner in the store. For a $20 fee, you are a member for life! You get a dividend each year from a portion of the store's profits. On average, it is about 10% of your total purchases of the previous year. Not too shabby! The membership also gets you discounts and coupons that they send to you pretty regularly. Not too shabby! So...I'm not a camping kind of girl. I love my clean sheets and a hot shower, but what draws me to REI is more than a single outdoor activity...it's my life style! You can get everything you need for Yoga at REI: clothing, mats, props, et cetera...and all while preserving an inhabitable earth, with their earth-conscious and reusable items. I do also occasionally make it out for a hike on a beautiful day, and REI has you covered here and then some, with a variety of hiking shoes, protective gear, and even thermal clothing. Plus, if you want to deepen your knowledge about the outdoors/outdoor activities, they offer classes...some of them are free, while some of them have a small fee. Every purchase you make benefits you at the end of the year in the form of a revenue sharing dividend, provided you are a member. They even send you coupons for discounts just for being a member. The membership is helpful in other ways too...If you want to return an item without a receipt, they can look it up on your account and take care of it. There are many staff members throughout the store that will actively approach you for assistance, rather than waiting for someone to ask for help. When you consider the thoughtful manner in which they interact with customers, I find this customer service model to be quite superior to that of a typical retail store. Of course you can buy anything online these days, and REI has a great website, but you can't beat the experience you get when you touch and explore products with your eyes and hands before the purchase. I have always found everything that I need when I am getting ready to hike, swim, snowboard/ski (not that I snowboard or ski - Im just preparing when I do decide to snowboard), camp, etc. I know that they will have everything that I can possibly need. Or I would come here and give me ideas what I need to bring. However, would I pay for them? ehhhh - most of them probably not. Maybe just a few things & when I mean a "few things" i mean just "one or two things" hahahha. There is only certain things I would buy from REI since they do have a great a policy for returns and you know their products will last for a really long time. I was looking for a raincoat one time - OMG, $99-$150 for a raincoat I was looking at - umm i'll just walk away and get something similar online. I was able to score an amazing amount of clothing for a very reasonable price. The staff was super helpful in locating the items I was looking for.
