I will never buy products from rei again. I bought a  alps mountaineering camp creek 4 tent in the Hope's that it would be the perfect tent for my camping trip. I was wrong, I bought it because it said it was water proof. It was definitely not. I do alot of camping so I do know how to put a tent together correctly. I bought this tent in Hope's to replace my old tent. Not not only did it leak it made everything that was in my tent soaking wet. Needless to say I am a very unhappy customer and will be making sure that my self and my friends and family will not be shopping at any rei stores. read more

So I went in a few weeks ago for the first time since November 2019 and was happy to get help from some old faces like Max, Bill and LeeAnn! But the store manger Matt was very rude to me when I asked him about a couple questions about returns as well some of the old faces who helped a lot but he called those who I have not seen and no longer work there losers. I saw Matt again recently and he was yelling at fmr. employee at another store. The whole thing horrified my grandma who remembered that employee who helped a lot and for being a big man a gentle soul. Since she was with me we went over and asked him if he was okay. And was okay and we told him we missed him at REI. So I hope the CEO of REI deals with Matt cause he will hurt the company if he is allowed to stay. read more

The prices age good at this store and salespeople are fair and do not preferentially recommend their own brand. The expertise in hiking and camping gear are much better than their competition and their return policies are currently the best in the business. If you have problems with an order, you can actually reach someone to talk to. read more

I try to avoid Alderwood Mall the way one would avoid a pack of rabid hounds, but necessity brought me to the REI this past weekend. All in all it was a quintessential REI experience...sure this might not be as big and comprehensive as the flagship megastore in Seattle, but compared to everything else in the area code (and certainly everything else in Alderwood Mall), this store is great. I was there to get a good pair of shoes for an upcoming vacation that will require more walking than a pair of Chuck Taylors can reasonably expect to handle. The store was pretty crowded but was also well-staffed and I had no trouble connecting with a salesperson who talked me through a number of options and was able to provide a lot of specific info about different shoes and the companies that make them. I was given plenty of time and space to try them on, and ended up with a really nice pair of Oboz for a good price and a good feeling about Oboz's business practices. Also, for a pretty crowded store, I got through check-out in a flash. Employee interactions were also hilariously fun. My vacation will be to New York City, and the salesperson said something about how the shoes I got might actually be okay for dressy places. I replied that I didn't really care about that, and the salesperson said, "Oh, you're just going to thumb your nuts at New York!" I'm pretty sure the intended phrase was "thumb your nose," but "thumb your nuts" implies an even greater sense of independent self-confidence in the face of other peoples' conventions. And I also learned that the cashier eats a dozen raw eggs a day, which hearkened images of the scene in "Napoleon Dynamite" where Napoleon gets a job at the chicken farm. Awesome. read more

We have been to this REI about 6 times in the last couple of months and I have to say, this place absolutely rocks! The customer service is beyond compare , all of the staff is knowledgable , friendly, and so willing to help out! My hubby is getting ready for his PCT hike & we had help with all of the gear .. from maps, stoves, tents, poles, food, shorts , rain jackets, hiking boots, backpacks.. we have experienced it all & every experience has been positive! shout out to Iris & Eric !!! This is my normal REI. It's a nice store but I prefer the location downtown on Yale. Still, this is nice for being at Alderwood. I bought my bike here a couple years ago and have bought many camping and hiking items and clothing at the store. They have good sales and coupons for members. Buying a bike here was awkward because there was nowhere to test it except behind the store in a little walking strip. Then when I bought it walking the bike out to the car and getting it loaded was kind of inconvenient. It's just not a great set up if you are buying something big. Customer service is great and the employees are always happy to help. read more

I am a long time member of REI and still have a hard time believing how badly I was treated at the Lynwood location. I live in Kitsap county so it's not convenient to drive to multiple locations hoping to find at least a smiling face at the counter. I had a pair of boots that suffered a severe materials failure, whatever was between the shoe and the sole was turning into goo. I brought the boots to the Lynnwood location and after a very brief look, the boots were put back into the bag and all I received after that was excuses/reasons why my situation didn't qualify for the alleged 100% customer satisfaction. I know I would feel different if there'd been the illusion of customer service- smiling, pretending to carefully look the boots over, even a coupon for another purchase. I received none of that. I contacted REI and my email was sent to the manager. I waited over a week and recontacted REI before I heard from the store manager. And then I got more reasons/excuses for why my situation didn't warrant any customer service. A quick look at my return history would've shown that I've never abused their return policy. Considering that REI charges for a membership, if customer service is not there, then I can certainly find products cheaper on the 'net. If you want customer satisfaction, be ready to fight for it or try other stores. read more

So I bought myself an awesome old fashioned cruiser bicycle. Problem is, it needs the spokes tightened, right? So I figure I'll take it to REI - easy answer. Well, I didn't really take into account the Lynnwood REI's change in location. The old place was great and huge and you could browse for hours on end in the spacious aisles. And there was always plenty of parking. The new place is in Alderwood Mall...so picture me trying to drive around with a bike rack, furiously searching for parking SOMEWHAT near the place, and challenging people to speed offs for the next available spot one aisle over. Eventually I found a spot and got my bike unattached from my car. I felt like a total IDIOT carefully pushing my tottering bike through the parking lot, across a crosswalk of patiently waiting cars, and past people chomping California rolls at Blue C Sushi until I finally got to REI. Alderwood Mall definitely is not designed with REI's bike repair in mind. However, once inside, the bike technicians were super helpful and understood that I had limitations in the amount of money I could spend to tighten the spokes and fix the bike up. I had the tires replaced (brand new sparkling whitewalls!), headset, brakes, and chain lubed up, and most of the spokes tightened. It was recommend that I will eventually need to replace the wheels, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. Overall, the repair was quick, easy, and fairly priced. The location is pretty much a joke. read more

In advance of an overnight backpacking trip in Olympic National Forest & Park, my wife and I stopped in to get rain gear (we're visiting from SoCal, and the REI stores down here don't carry rain gear, because it seldom rains here!). We had a great experience, and were treated very nicely, particularly by an older gentleman who had started as a sales person just the day before. He was very informative, struck up a conversation to get to know our needs more generally, then zoomed into my particular needs (great technique!), and as I was completing my selection, asked about our upcoming travel & outdoor plans, in the context of our common travel experiences. I went to REI on my way home from Everett for Camelbak and some other hiking stuff. The store is easy to find. If you can find where Alderwood Mall is, you can find REI. Plus, free parking is everywhere outside of the mall. The store is not bad! I'd say it's probably only one fifth of the size compares to the REI in downtown Seattle. Even though it's small, I still found what I need within 30 minutes. The staff is friendly. One of them helped me with what kind of trail pass I should get depending on it's owned by state or federal. I saw more selections of GU and the price is cheaper than Big 5. There were also a lot of selections of energy bars. read more

I like REI and all but this one's weird for me. The inventory is spotty and the staff can be weird at best. The nice man in the shoe department brought me a pair of boots and 10 min later, after waiting and hoping he'd check on me in one of his passes by, I had to track him down to tell him they didn't fit and get another size. It's a tough call but I prefer this store compared to the downtown location. As always, a rock climbing wall greets you upon entry. I've never tried it - I'd probably embarrass myself to no end. I love buying my rain jackets from REI. The last one I bought was their brand. I find the selection fashionable and practical for living in Seattle. The chance to grab goods on sale is always appreciated. Aside from rain jackets, we tend to get various shoes here - winter boots, rain boots, and more practical wear. I like having brands like Merrell and BOG to choose from for my family. The shoe section is fascinating for me since I've never been able to figure out why you would have a "mini-mountain" and NOT allow children to play on it. It's cruel. Other goods I get here are things like backpacks, camping gear, gloves, and hats. For the most part, staff members have been helpful and friendly. I must say, I have the occasional bad customer experience. For example, we had to flag someone down to help us in the shoe department this weekend. Yes, there were other customers there. Yes, we decided to stand directly in front of the stock area so we could catch a person who was available to help us. We got someone and we had to request to have my child's foot sized. As my child was trying on boots (directly in front of his chair) a sales person came and physically put his hands on my child and moved him. Again, there was room on the OTHER side of my child. It's hard for any parent to teach their child respect when adults have so little for them. Sadness. The good service far outweighs the poor for me so I still shop there. read more

Customer service earned this REI location 5 stars. I ordered a heart rate monitor online and was so disappointed that it wouldn't turn on. I ran down to the local REI and was promptly greeted and directed to the back counter to have the watch looked it. No need to wait in the check out line. The guy who helped me out a spare battery in the watch and it worked. I was sent a watch with a dud battery but the employee gave me the new battery free of charge. I'm a member. I like REI as a whole. REI in Lynnwood is a different story. A lot of the sales rep are knowledgable and friendly, but they are pushy about knowing if you are a member (and if not, convincing you to get one). If you are not a member, they will follow you around and list out all the incentives of joining. My thought is that their performance as salespeople are based on the number of memberships they sell, because by the time I've entered and walked up the stairs, I've been asked at least 3 times if I am a member (once more at check out). I hope this store focuses more on providing good service - even to non-members and others who don't want to join - and not just solely wanting to know if people are members or not. It also makes me feel bad for the sales reps. Aside from that, this store is clean, quiet, and small compared to the Seattle store. You won't find everything here, so make sure to double check online. Good selection on high quality jackets and gear. read more

Everyone knows that REI rules. Nothing can beat the Seattle store, but you'll find the same great gear and helpful service at the Alderwood Mall REI. I love my Osprey backpack, and I've used it in Europe, Canada, the NW Wilderness, and biz trips back to NYC. They have a great selection of snow shoes and their rental department doesn't disappoint either. Some of the best hiking boots I've ever owned were REI brand too, which surprised me. These big ol clompers I have are extremely comfortable and rugged. The Alderwood location has a mini climbing cylinder that is great for the kids while mom and dad shop. The checkout lines move quickly even during the christmas shopping madness, and the customer service is top notch. read more

I LOVE REI. From Denver, to SF, to Seattle, REI rocks in so many ways. I stopped by last week to grab some hiking accessories and a light/thin windbreaker for the weekend. I trek upstairs, grab a nice red jacket from the clearance rack (yay clearance!) and head downstairs to pay. Here is the conversation (loosely quoted): REI worker: Hi there! Did you find everything you needed? Me: Yep, I mainly needed a new jacket for the rainy hikes and I found one so I'm good to go. REI worker: Are you wanting to stay dry? If so, this jacket won't do it and I'd hate to have you cursing REI during your hike. Me: **laughing** Nice! I thought it was waterproof from the tag, but it's not? REI worker: Nope, check out the threads around the shoulder (she stretches the area around the shoulder and underarm). For it to keep water out, it needs to have the plastic-like shell and threading in this area and it doesn't. We have plenty of jackets that have the right design, so head back upstairs and see if you see something you like. I head upstairs and look in the area where I found the red jacket. I'm not seeing anything different, so just as I turn around to walk over to another section, the lady from downstairs in right there like I Dream of Jeannie or something. I couldn't find the other jackets, so she points to the same rack I pulled the red one from, walks over, and realizes the whole rack has the same jackets. She asks a coworker where the waterproof jackets are and he points to the same rack...the lady then explains to him why those do not keep water out. He looks at her like whatever and she walks away...I could tell he just learned something new cuz I sure as heck did. Another worker comes up and leads us both to another area with jackets that have the waterproof lining and stitching. I grab a black one...score! It was a little higher in price, but there was a clear difference in quality, yet a similar thinness so I was fine. She takes me back downstairs, rings me up (REI member points...woot woot), and off I go. Moral of the story: REI workers kick arse in customer service and in-depth product knowledge. There is always the one or two workers who could care less, but REI staffers know their stuff and they make sure you know it too. WOOOOOOOOOT!!! read more

Price: pricing isn't always the best here. Some things are a good deal while others you can find a better deal elsewhere (such as amazon). That being said they have a FANTASTIC return policy for boots and friendly staff, which should be taken into consideration. Staff: most are helpful and informative without being pushy which I really appreciate. Atmosphere: clean but overwhelming. Many things to look at and some in tight corners I would recommend going in there for specific things or you will be there all day. They offer classes (topics ranging from day hiking for beginners to avalanche awareness) some are free some have a small fee. I have not gone to any however. They have a lifetime membership for $20. read more

Store seems nice enough, with a big selection and good amount of clothing. Things look to be good quality. It's the vibe that threw me. After about 30 minutes I was totally frazzled and ready to leave. This place needs a major energy tune-up (I'd hate to work here). I also don't need my name posted on the dressing room door, or the door locked after me so I have to stand around waiting to get back in. I don't need 20 questions at the register (no, I don't want stickers or to climb your fake rock). The neurotic vibe in there makes me not want to return. read more

I was in REI over the weekend and I definitely had the best customer service experience. I had been fitted previously for a backpack and the pack was way too small. I took the pack back and got another size and the gal Kellie at the front desk returned it with no questions asked. She was amazing and had excellent customer service skills. read more

For a location in the mall this isn't half bad. I mean it seems smaller than the former location in Lynnwood that was AWAY from the mall. In actuality it's probably the same size. Deals can be found if you look hard enough, wait for those after season sales if you want a great deal. Selections seem fine, I mean it's not the downtown Seattle location with regard to size and selection. I do like the fact the crew is well versed in the products they offer. If they don't know they often will try to find someone more knowledgeable. Minus one star for being in the mall and the lack of parking during the busy shopping season. read more

So I go into REI to order something for instore pickup and first of all you can't pay cash when you do an online order for instore pickup. Why? I don't know so I have to buy a stupid gift card and then they use that to order the item. Lame. So I pay part cash and then the rest on my credit card and it's a card I rarely use. I specifically told the cashier that I may not have enough on there and if it doesn't go through I'll have to go to the bank and come back. I was waiting for a new debit card in the mail. She says it went through, gives me the receipt and says it should be there in about a week. I thanked her and left. It was a gift I was getting for someones birthday and so time was a factor. So I call a week later to see if it's in. REI tells me that it was canceled due to insufficient funds. I used the card after that day and apparently they don't charge the card until they fulfill the order. So you have to make sure you don't spend the money in there until the order is completed. So why didn't the cashier tell me that they just check the balance to make sure that the money is there. So I ask where is the portion I paid for the stupid gift card. (The only reason I can see that they wouldn't except cash is because they want you to buy a gift card so that your money gets trapped in their system and you either lose the gift card and they get off without having to give you anything, or you're forced to eventually use it at their stupid store.) so to make a long story short the person I was getting the gift for didn't get their gift and they sent the portion of the money that I had paid in cash for the stupid gift card to my email. Which unfortunately I didn't check, so I didn't know the whole time and then by the time I figured out what was going on what I wanted to get the person for gift was no longer in stock and now my money is trapped in a stupid REI gift card for some thing that I now I'm forced to buy that I wouldn't have bought otherwise and they've pretty much lost a customer for life. So if you buy anything from REI, don't use a gift card and if they won't accept cash get it from somewhere else. Buyer beware. I just don't understand what kind of a Mickey Mouse business gives you a receipt and says thank you very much. It'll be here on Friday and then you go to pick it up on Friday and it's not there. What a joke. If it's something you can get somewhere else I suggest you get it somewhere else because their customer service is terrible. read more

This REI is quite small and mostly focuses on clothing to look outdoorsy rather then gear to actually be outdoorsy. The employees usually ignore customers and are busy having personal conversations. Gear selection isn't great. Example: they have 5 ski/ snowboard bags. 2 aren't padded, 2 are useless (snowboards) and all don't have wheels. If you are going to have a small selection, make sure your selection is good. read more

We walked around the entire store trying to find someone to help us. When we finally did, the employee was helpful, but not quite knowledgeable on the product we were purchasing. It''s convenient because it is located at the Alderwood Mall and you can still get a lot of the equipment & save yourself the trip down to Seattle. For the most part, the employees are helpful & friendly, but the reason I am giving this REI only 3 stars is due to the poor customer service I have received at times. Granted the 'mall experience' customers are be rude and frustrating at times, but I have waited patiently in line to ask a question or solicit advice to be snapped at or ignored. Love REI, hate the shopping mall. While it is possible to enter this store without venturing into the mall itself, patrons must first figure out how to get TO the mall, and then deal with the ridiculous traffic and parking surrounding the complex. Once inside the store, you will find all of the high-end outdoor gear (with high-end pricing to match) that REI is known for. There are deals to be had when a sale is going on, but of course the crowd density increases proportionately-- and this seems to be even more of a problem at this location due to it's layout. I firmly believe that REI is a great business, selling quality outdoor apparel, gear, and other products and providing above-average customer service. I'd just prefer not to have to go to a full-blown shopping mall to get to the REI store. read more

Big fan of this store. Super pricey, but you get what you pay for, and when things need to perform, you need to pay for that reliability and performance. They are renovating a bit downstairs with some new displays, by the rock climbing wall, so it was a little discombobulated, but overall the store has a good layout and great selection. Smaller than most REIs, but still has what you need. People working there are knowledgeable and friendly, even though they didn't actually ask us if we needed help (we didn't look like serious shoppers I guess), but we did see them being helpful to other people besides us. Parking by Nordstrom and walking through Nordstrom to get to REI (which is right next door) seemed to be easy and stress free. read more

Don't advertise that you sell park passes and then tell customers you don't have any in stock when they ask to purchase one. Don't waste your time at this REI, go to the one in Seattle, better selection and customer service. They also have a ranger station, in house. read more

I've been looking for a new single speed bike for my fiancé. We decided to drop by REI as they have decent selection of bikes and a return policy that rivals anyone. After briefly looking around we found a perfect Novara bike in clearance that was marked down 55%. I asked to speak to a manager about getting it discounted even more since it was last years model and a little scratched up (hey it never hurts). So I waited to speak with the manager Gina who was very pleasant. I showed her the bike and the scratches but she assured me the bike was brand new and still has the warranty. She wasn't able to budge on the price but she was very pleasant to deal with and we bought the bike anyways. Great place with great people and still better prices then some local competitors (comparable bikes) read more

It's REI, what can I say? Other than guns, they have just about everything you need for outdoor recreation. They're the only place you can even find some things. Even though their prices are high, they frequently have great sales and if you're a member, they send you 20% off coupons several times a year . If you can wait until you get one of those, you can save big on expensive items. The people who work there are all very helpful and friendly. The Seattle flagship store has the world's largest indoor climbing structure, or at least it was last I heard. I love Cabela's as well but REI will always be my favorite read more

I was preparing for a trip to the desert and Leanne helped me with many details on what clothes are best and she even gave me many tips for a safe desert experience. She is very knowledgeable, kind and friendly. Then at checkout Laura was very friendly and sweet too. Overall I had a great, positive experience at REI. REI sucks! Use www.BackCountry.com, www.SierraTradingPost.com , etc. About all they are good for is if you didn't plan ahead and need INSTANT purchase so you can get the hell out of the city! As far as knowledgeable staff.... well, hit up PRO-SKI, Feathered Friends or Marmot Mountain Works. Finding a person who actually KNOWS what they are talking about at REI-stores is like a blind person trying to hit a pop-can with a .22Cal revolver! Do your research ahead of time if you plan to walk through the doors at these stores! The only PLUS about them is that they do have a great return policy provided you gave them your information when purchasing. read more

REI is pretty great! This location, now at Alderwood Mall, is pretty good for being right at the mall! It's not the behemoth of an outdoor shopper's paradise that the downtown store is, but it's pretty fantastic! I mean, come on... it is STILL REI! The service here I've received has been good and the staff has been knowledgeable. I won a free bike tune-up back during Ride Your Bike To Work Day in May and just recently used it here and the service and work was excellent! My bike is riding like a new one! The products here are good and you'll pay for good products here. Becoming a member is $20 forever, so it's worth it and you can easily get your money back on that with the first year's dividend, if you spend money here like I do. REI's store brand, Novara, has quality stuff that's priced pretty well and Novara bikes are priced excellently for the quality and the quality parts they use in them! If you like the outdoors like I like the outdoors, which is to say a decent amount I guess, you'll LOVE REI at this location, downtown, Redmond, all over! read more
