I love shopping at REI. There are so many cool things you can buy there. It's great to shop here when there is a sale. Because everything is kind of expensive. But the majority of the stuff is good quality stuff. Super great for hikers. Lots of great stuff for climbers. And much more. Although everybody tries to be very helpful in the store, once in a while, you will come across a person who had a bad day. Perhaps that's what happened to the lady who is helping us. It does not cost much effort and does not cost any money to smile at people. That's all we wanted. we know what we came for. We know what we are shopping for. I was returning a tent and exchanging a backpack and she made me feel so bad about it that I wanted to leave the store ASAP. Came In as an audit, to see if I would of been asked if I needed help. I've came in before for the same reasoning and wasn't asked if I needed help. Today, same issue. I'm sure this isn't the norm at Rei (right?) I wasn't greeted at the entrance and After walking back and forth near a huddle of employees talking about what they are taking on their camping trip, not one employee asked if I needed help. I was looking for small collapsible lamps which they didn't have in stock. Now again, I'm sure this doesn't happen to everyone, but when an Caucasian American walks right by them, the same as I did, and they ask if he needs help then that's how I knew it was because of my skin color. This is a horrible feeling but it's the truth from today and other times I've gone in. read more

It was my first time shopping at REI and I was impressed! I went in looking for a pair of Brooks Glycerin 18 as I saw online that they were available at this store. I was serviced by Rosa (hopefully that's the right name) who helped me select between sizes for my shoes. I am normally a size 6.5 in Brooks Glycerin, but the fit was a bit snug and Rosa advised me to try on a 7 with a runner's knot to help stabilize my ankle. Wow, as a runner, I never heard of that trick, but it definitely helped me with my fit. I decided to go with the size 7 and wow, no regrets in fit. I've been in love with my new shoes while running. I'm glad I sized up with the assistance I received here. Aside from shoes, they have great staff and organized outdoor gears. I did spend some time looking at their sale section and they had good stuff. I would definitely visit here again, especially for outdoor gear. You should come check it out! read more

I've always loved REI for the great outdoor equipment and knowledgeable staff. This also applies to their bike repair service. I've brought my bike here for a few years now. They can fix complicated problems in a reasonable time and simple fixes on the spot. I came in to the shop tonight about an hour before closing expecting to drop off my bike and pick it up in a few days. My bike tubes had popped on two consecutive rides so I knew something was wrong. That's when Aram stepped in, asked me what was wrong and checked the rim. He noticed that the tape that lined the rim was too thin in width. So he replaced it quickly and even checked my other tire (which was fine) just to be sure. I was on my way in 30 minutes. read more

Now let me begin by saying, I was definitely out of my element. I would describe myself as an adveterous/ourdoorsy kind of person, but not necessarily well versed in the language of gear. SO, I will say I was a but overwhelmed when I walked into this beautiful, yet massive, store dedicated to all your adventurous needs! We were immediately greeted by an associat as soon as we walked in. Fortunately for me, they have fantastic easy to see signage: that read *Camping*, as if to know my novice self would find myself in the land of bicycles ;) Anyways, they had a beautiful selection of sleeping bags hung so you can touch and feel and make the best selection. We found a super cute one that was on clearance for $44!!! Fantastic. The second item I needed, required some help. An associate was quick to show me in the right direction and hand me off to the person that works that area of their floor. Super helpful!!! Once we got what we needed we walked around to check out all the amazing stuff they have. Honestly, I know I'll be returning. Something tells me I'm about to tap into a new world of adventure! I usually love REI, though I think I prefer the other location to this one. Nevertheless I usually have good experiences whenever I go. Anyways, last time I went I went to go purchase a water bottle but then I started looking at some of the clothes. When I went to go ring up my stuff, I felt like the cashier (it was an older lady, don't remember her name) was side eyeing me the whole time and made some weird comment about how im only getting the water bottle and not the other stuff i was looking. Truly weird and rude comment. I'm not sure if she thought I was someone else or if she thought I was taking something but I didn't like the feeling. Made the experience uncomfortable. No, I just changed my mind, decided that the store is overpriced and all I wanted was my water bottle lol. read more

I have so many nice things to say about REI as a company. But today, I want to talk about my most recent visit to the REI in Northridge California. I had just blown out my bike tire on a long road trip down Reseda Boulevard. I was tired, hungry, really really frustrated, having to navigate LA's challenging public transportation system with a bike during the pandemic. I managed to get home after an hour and a half waiting for buses. So, suffice it to say, I entered REI a little wound up. Enter Michelle from The bikes department. She saw my quizzical look as I was comparing my camera photo of the busted tire to numerous boxes of bike tubes. I simply asked...do I have the right one? She proceeded to help me locate the correct tube, give me recommendations on weekly maintenance of my bike, recommend a portable bike pump (CO2 cartridges!), and answered a ton of questions about my bike I didn't realize I had brewing in my head until someone just asked! 30 minutes later I realized I had found a new bike shop. It has been years since I have purchased a bike and neither of us had any idea what we were looking for or what would be best suited for her needs. Curtis was very helpful, friendly, knowledgeable and patient. He showed us many bikes and really took time to explain their different features and functions. As a member for over 40 years it is sad to write a poor review but it has been earned by REI. I ordered two of the exact same items online during the black friday promotion. One item was shipped and a notice of an "issue" with the the 2nd item was sent two days later. Two days after that an e-mail of "order cancelled due to "a lack of inventory" was sent. I happened to be in my Outlook account at the time the e-mail arrived and opened it right away. I went to REI.com and checked the "issue item" and there it was, available for full price within 2 minutes of REI sending me a "lack of inventory" e-mail. I responded to REI and asked why there was an "inventory issue" with an item that is readily available on REI's website. Almost 10 days later, no response from REI. Really REI, this is your interpretation of customer service?? Sounds more like disservice to me. How very SAD!!! read more

I found this store recently while trying to find a new sling back pack. I don't camp or do those types of adventures, but I figured this is a cool store with travel gear since I do travel quite a bit and attend theme parks, conventions, etc. I found quite a few sling bags online and wanted to check them out in person, but the selection of certain items in store is pretty lack luster. Overall, the store is huge and has a ton of merch, but narrowing it down for my search there were only two or three bags. I went ahead and ordered a few online for free store pick up and my bags were ready in 4 or 5 days. One bag I ordered was more of a side/satchel and although it was a good bag, it wasn't what I needed. The second bag was almost like a back pack with a rectangular shape, so I figured I could also use it for my laptop on vacations. Sadly it doesn't expand very well so if I were to put in my laptop that's just about all I could fit, no cameras or other items. The associates are all great and prices are reasonable, in line with Amazon and Best Buy, but you REALLY need to look around to find what you're in need of. read more

Came out to look for specific sandals that per online, were in store. Didn't find anything I wanted but didn't have the chance to get some assistance because they were short staffed. Had the worst experience with a worker that goes by they/them. I forgot they name. They had freckles and short hair. I went in to buy a Patagonia jacket and she tried to upsell the REI membership. I let her know I wasn't interested, and she made the most ridiculous face and rolled her eyes. When I told her I wasn't interested she made me feel less than for not wanting to purchase the $30 membership or whatever. She really had the audacity to tell me you're about to spend $200 on a jacket and you don't want to pay $30 for the membership and continue to roll her eyes never will I ever step foot in this REI because of they/them. read more

Went in for some brakes and a tire onmy bike with the expectations of it taking 5/8 business days. the mechanic crew knocked it out out of the park adjusting my brakes and my derailleur and slapping on a tire like a pit crew. sooo stoked did not need brakes and derailleur issue was just an adjustment special thanks to Sara you guys are my go to for bike repairs. read more

Honestly, it was my first time at this store and my goal was to look for climbing shoes since I'm getting into climbing. I had questions and this employee was so knowledgeable and so helpful to me. She was able to explain so much, as well as personal experiences. From our conversation, I was able to get the perfect shoe for myself and what works best. Definitely would go back for her. Then there was help by someone else, but honestly he didn't even sound like he even cared or even climbed. Regardless, look for those employees with experience and who are excited to talk about what they know. But none the less, great first time experience! read more

REI is my FAVORITE toy store, and they never disappoint. I'm always pleased with how well each employee knows their stuff -- they seem to hire genuine outdoorsy people who are assigned to work the sections they know best. No random hires here. But what prompted me to write this review today was how helpful Michelle in the bike department was today. REI didn't have what I needed, but instead of just ending it by saying so, she directed me to a totally unrelated business who did, complete with address & phone number. Kudos to a store who didn't train their employees to push for a sale anyway, and kudos to Michelle who made my day-- and my trip. I have a special trip in 3 days that I needed an item for, and thanks to her suggestion, I have it in my hands now. Had she pushed me to buy something from REI that had to be shipped etc., it wouldn't have happened in time and I would have been disappointed. So despite me not purchasing anything from REI today, Michelle helped strengthen my long-term loyalty to REI and trust me... I will be back for more. read more

I love REI. This location is a little on the smaller side but is nicely stocked and always clean and organized. They have a lot of back packs and backpacking supplies. One thing to mention is that he staff is really nice. Every time we visit REI we always come out with something. What is really cool is the membership they offer. I really enjoy seeing all the hiking gear and outdoor gear they have for hiking, outdoor activities and camping. I look forward to coming to this store every single time. read more

Worst 99% white staff ever. Mechanic ruined a part on my bike. Denied it. Manager came out. I even showed her a picture i took before i brought the bike in and she said no we cant replace them. I shouldnt have to show her anything...i did and she still refused to replace them. Refunding for a broken part was not an option for this store. And they follow you around. And they ask you to be a member aggressively. REI is nothing now. Nothing. read more

I'm looking for someone who has a lot of money... Because I want everything in the store! Any takers? Are you a hiker, biker, camper, skier, fisher, rock climber or just active in general? This is YOUR store! I was ready to hike Yosemite but I had no hiking gear. I hike all the time but I might be considered more of an irresponsible hiker. I usually go on hikes with no water, no snacks, no headlamp, and not the best shoes. Most of the time I manage to remember to take my cell phone. However I knew I wasn't going to be able to get away with this in Yosemite. These were longer hikes (10 hours or more) and I need to get more prepared. I guess it's better to be safe than sorry. I can't depend on the Rangers always coming to save me like I am a damsel in distress. The first thing I knew I needed was some hiking sticks. I have bad knees and I needed something to save them. Last time I hiked Yosemite it was easy on the way up and horrible on the way down. If you ever go into a hiking store there are a lot of choices for hiking sticks and it can become overwhelming, especially because a lot of them are very expensive. They range from $35-$150 and I had no idea what the difference was between them. Jenna helped me figure out the best hiking sticks and what the difference was. She was AMAZING! If anybody knows me, I need someone who is patient... I've been known to be a lot. Since I had Jenna all to myself I decided do use her knowledge to help me find a backpack. I knew nothing about all these backpacks except that they were expensive. Thankfully, Jenna knew exactly what I needed. I ended up buying a backpack that was 25% off of $100 so I actually got a really good deal because when I went home and looked online they were all priced about $130. I got mine for $75. Steal! I also bought the best hiking boots. I usually want to look cute and find hiking boots ugly. However at Yosemite I had to walk through lots of water and snow and I needed my toes to stay completely dry. These boots did the job and my feet didn't hurt at all after 2 full days of hiking. Who knew shoes could be so amazing! Sometimes you have to trade comfortability for looks. When you become a member at REI you pay $20 but you're a member for LIFE! As a member you get all types of coupons or special deals. You also earn dividends with every purchase you make. At the end of the year you get a voucher to redeem at their store. Another cool thing you get as a member is an opportunity to attend their garage sales which take place on varies Saturday mornings throughout the year. This is an opportunity to buy items that have been returned for a cheaper price. Lastly, as a member you get discounts on different classes they offer. If you're planning a hike and you need more information or you're looking for help with buying the correct products or don't know what to expect you can take one of their classes. Mount Whitney, Joshua Tree, or Yosemite, they have it all. They help you get prepared by explaining what to expect and what is needed. REI sent me a coupon for 20% off so I decided to purchase a headlamp. Johnny was awesome and he showed me how to work the headlamp. I even took a video of him doing it so I would remember how to work it. He was another patient employee that could put up with all my questions. Everyone in the store was friendly and asked me if I needed help. It was refreshing to go into a place with such great customer service! Don't forget to buy all your snacks here. Just went to the bike department here after a lot of disappointing trips to other bike shops and their terrible service but not this place. The three gents working in that bike dpt were very helpful and specifically told me about the issues I was experiencing and how to avoid them in the future along with product suggestions and even took time to show me how to fix my own tire!!!! As seeing what its like as a customer and as fellow staff, I can honestly say that despite it being a small REI, it has an incredible staff. This is a mediocre location for REI, in my opinion. Zero ski/snowboard stuff. I was there the other day looking at a knife sharpener. They had none in stock, but the display was there. When I asked to see it, I could tell immediately that it had been used already. Turns out, that display item was marked out of the inventory already. They checked other stores and found two locations with the item in stock. They don't do inter-store transfers. When I asked about the "used" look, the lady responded with "Most likely, we use it to sharpen all those other knives."....... HUH? So this raises a couple questions: 1. Why are you displaying an item when you are sold out of it? When I worked retail, our rule was to pull the display until we have the item in stock. 2. Why are you sharpening brand new knives? Just for fun? Does this mean some kid tried sharpening the display model knife I bought from you a month ago? Doesn't help that the lady tried to point out that I could just send my Benchmade knife to the company for a free sharpening, which I was already aware of. The point of this purchase was not because I was in desperate need for a knife-sharpening. I was in need of owning a sharpening tool. I asked her if they carried any other diamond stones, and she pointed me to another knife..... obviously not hearing my question at all. read more

I searched high and low for a pack I purchased several months ago fro size comparison on a new pack. I was looking for a pack a tad smaller. Boo!!! I couldn't find it anywhere. Oh well, I found one and it was on sale. A sales associate (Alex) came by as asked if I needed any assistance. We started chatting about the differences between two packs that caught my eye. Strike 1: Then someone else caught the sales associates eye. After a few double takes, he excused himself to chat with what sounded like a former employee who transferred to the Maria Del Rey store. By the time the associate came back to me, I was a bit annoyed and had already made up my mind. I headed upstairs to check out shoes for myself as I'm overdue for a new pair. Strike 2: Holding a shoe in my hand, a sales associate appears from the back. I started to ask him for a size, but noticed he too was doing a double take to the same person that I lost the sales associate downstairs. I asked the associate if he was going to help me or talk to the person. Caught off guard he appeared not to know what to do, so I let him go. he seemed relieved and skipped on over the person where they chit chatted for awhile. Funny, when he was done chatting, he had the gall to come back to me and say ok, now you have my complete and undivided attention. Not sure if speaking to the manager about the situation did any good. the manager did agree that it was not go for the sales associate to excuse himself and then for it to happen again in a different department. I may head back and see if there's any improvement on their overall customer service. Or just continue to drive out of my way to the Arcadia or Santa Monica store where the customer service is always superb. In comparison to the other 5 REI's I've shopped at I really enjoy this Northridge location. It isn't the largest location I've been to but this spot does carry all the essentials I've ever needed from Christmas gifts to week long backpacking trips. Like most of my experiences at any REI's, the staff is friendly and knowledgeable in regards to the merchandise and my interests. I've camped out for 3 REI yard sales and I've been able to find great deals on stuff especially when I was in the first group into the sale (I had to grab my spot at 2am for the 9am sale). Occasionally you can plead your case on getting an additional mark down on the already discounted prices at the yard sale but that will depend on the person you talk to. Best part about this Northridge REI...there's a Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf in the same shopping center (wink, wink). read more
