I worked here almost two years ago for just shy of a year and I've been a long time customer before (and after). As seeing what its like as a customer and as fellow staff, I can honestly say that despite it being a small REI, it has an incredible staff. From the manager down to the specialists, everyone is there because they are excited to share their knowledge and give you a great outdoor experience. Never climbed or backpacked before? No problem. This is a mediocre location for REI, in my opinion. Zero ski/snowboard stuff. I was there the other day looking at a knife sharpener. They had none in stock, but the display was there. When I asked to see it, I could tell immediately that it had been used already. Turns out, that display item was marked out of the inventory already. They checked other stores and found two locations with the item in stock. They don't do inter-store transfers. When I asked about the "used" look, the lady responded with "Most likely, we use it to sharpen all those other knives."....... HUH? So this raises a couple questions: 1. Why are you displaying an item when you are sold out of it? When I worked retail, our rule was to pull the display until we have the item in stock. 2. Why are you sharpening brand new knives? Just for fun? Does this mean some kid tried sharpening the display model knife I bought from you a month ago? Doesn't help that the lady tried to point out that I could just send my Benchmade knife to the company for a free sharpening, which I was already aware of. The point of this purchase was not because I was in desperate need for a knife-sharpening. I was in need of owning a sharpening tool. I asked her if they carried any other diamond stones, and she pointed me to another knife..... obviously not hearing my question at all. read more

Not the biggest store but one of my favorites. I've been here many times and spent some $$$$. The staff is knowledgeable and always helpful. You seriously can't go wrong at REI. It's unlike any other store.. they actually focus on camping and other outdoor activities such as cycling, hiking, cross country, skiing etc. I always find exactly what I'm looking for. The staff is generally pretty helpful they're always nice and experienced. It can get pricey, but if you come here with a list and research your options you may find everything you need at lesser prices than you thought. This location is always a pleasant trip. It's never too busy, but when it is it's not too bad. There's an upstairs and a downstairs. I've bought hiking and camping gear here and it's all held up pretty well. They carry the best products available. I have the membership card which pays for itself... I personally recommend it to those who are outdoorsy. It's basically a one time payment of $20 that gives you special discounts and let's you return items easily if they are not satisfactory. REI is a trustworthy brand, they are constantly restocking products and educating their employees on all the items. This is my favorite location, they also have one in Santa Monica that's very nice. read more

I meet Adam. Very cool and knows his REI product, plus in my book because time is money for both of us but all i could think of was traffic to be honest heading back to my neck of the woods. Adam like i say is friendly, knows what i need and looked in stock for my color and we were done. he did offer me products to go with my purchase but also gave me the pro/con of purchasing which i declined. i didn't need the extra care per Adam. Awesome store! Came in to this store for the first time to get some last minute gear for a hiking trip, now I'm hooked. I will only shop at REI for camping/hiking gear. I use to shop at Bass Pro, but REI is so much better it's literally night and day difference. I've recently purchased: hiking shoes, shirts, socks, pants, shorts, trekking poles, hydration packs, and a ton of miscellaneous stuff. No complaints on any gear purchased. The staff here is great too. Been here about 6 times now and they never let me down. They are super friendly and offer to help even if it is not their department. I really like how they do not up-sale me either. I actually went in looking for something I thought I needed, but after the woman showed me how it actually did not fit my intended purpose, I was able to put that cash towards something else in the store I actually did need. I bought the $20 membership and have made more than that money back. The coupons and rebates add up quick. I like how they give coupons after purchases or by email, I always forget something and use the coupons at REI.com. read more

This REI has been very well kept & organized. The employees are very helpful with finding & explaining items. I feel relatively safe shopping here during the COVID-19 pandemic as everyone is wearing masks & they sanitize the counter & credit card terminals between each customer. I also enjoyed their quick curbside service. Parking is easy here in this large shopping plaza (curbside shopping parking spots are directly in front). I normally love going to REI because they have an amazing staff that helps you with any questions you have. The second star is for the rest of the helpful and attentive team. However, yesterday afternoon, I came to return an item without my receipt that I purchased early last month. Justin, the sales rep, was rude and not very helpful. I gave him my membership # to look up my account, he questioned me multiple times about the item I wanted to return, and could not locate the item under the account. I did not appreciate his attitude while trying to look up my purchase. After going around in circles, he finally asked me if I have my credit card that I made the purchase on so he could look it up. If he asked me this in the beginning, this could've been resolved so much quicker. I get that he only had 10 minutes left in his shift (he was talking to a coworker that he's almost off), but I would appreciate it if he could be more attentive next time and help the customer that is in front of him. read more

My husband and I were at the REI in Northridge today. The man who was working at the shoe department didn't really want to assist us. Honestly, he was rude. When we brought up an issue, his reply was whatever. Here is the issue....when turning over the two pairs of shoes my husband tried on, we noticed that the soles on both pairs of shoes looked like they had been used and returned. The Hoka pair were the worst. This pair had even been worn in. The Brooks that my husband also tried had a cleaner sole but were still dirty. We were told it was dirty from people trying on the shoes and walking on the carpet. I would have walked out and not bought the shoes, but my husband is leaving on a business trip and needs a new pair of shoes. We took the pair we were buying and the two dirty pairs to the cashier. I asked to speak to the manager and showed her the shoes. I told her that if the carpet was that dirty, it needed to be shampooed. She agreed that the other pair looked like it had been returned and put back. I didn't get the feeling my complaint was heard. After many years of being a customer we won't be shopping there again. read more

In the pre-Covid times, I've loved REI and their helpful staff - but today's visit was odd and upsetting. I went to pick up an online order and upon entering the store, overheard a male employee at the front talking with a customer about becoming a member. The push to sign up for membership apparently had gone on for a while because the customer became impatient and basically said, "I've never even been to this store before - so don't yet know if I'm interested in becoming a member!" After the customer stepped deeper into the store, the employee radioed one or more people, described what the customer was wearing and stated he was not a member. As I continued to wait in the order pickup line, a couple entered the store and before they were allowed to proceed, the same male employee asked if they were members; they said they were. After they stepped deeper into the store, the employee again radioed one or more people, described what the couple was wearing and stated they were members. Maybe this is the new "normal" for REI - but it felt disturbing and overly intrusive, similar to profiling. If REI wants people to sign up for membership - this is certainly not the way to go about it. Prior to today's visit, I thought highly of REI as a progressive and mindful company - but it will be a long time before I order from or set foot in that store again. read more

REI in Northridge Because of covid its practically impossible to find a bike for sale that's not over priced, if you can find one. I decided to fix up my vintage Schwinn bike that had been sitting in my garage. Phillip and Kevin from the Northridge store could not have been nicer or more helpful. They were so thoughtful and careful because of my concerns with covid. Partial tune up, new tires and tubes My bike rides like new. I now have a bike from my childhood that I can enjoy. Masks and social distancing from employees and customers. Everyone I came in contact with in the store were super nice and considerate. Very nice experience. read more

Just cobbled together my REI advertisement back country top ten: 10. If you like sleeping soundly...don't bother or bring earplugs and ahandgun. You can get the former at REI. 9. Don't even think about carnal knowledge. After 10 miles of hiking, individual sleeping bags in 30 degree weather on wafer thin thermarests (carried by REI) setting up camp and eating cliff bars for dinner, I'm not down. 8. Don't forget your chapstick (loads of it at REI). Those guys that just smiled at you as they passed weren't trying to be friendly, they were amused with your girlfriend's hot hue of copper lip gloss that you desperately smeared on your dry, chapped lips. 7. Put your food in a bear barrel (thank God they carry those at REI) and don't cook in your campsite. That 500 pound black bear didn't mean to scare the poo out of you...he didn't even want to eat you. He was merely interested in the little bits of the last of the beef jerkey you horded and ate in your sleeping bag. Their sense of smell is one thousand times more sensitive than yours and mine after all. Or see #10. 6. Don't dunk your Nalgene in the river Homer unless you bring diapers. REI sells these rocking water filter pumps that clean up all that stuff that requires a dose of Immodium so you can make it home. Iodine will cover the rest. 5. Don't forget the BOOZE! No you can't bring your two gallon bottle of Patron, but you CAN put a couple liters in a collapsible bottle (REI) which will get smaller as you swill it. We misplaced ours on the second day...I thought my husband lost it and I was seriously considering putting some beef jerkey in his sleeping bag. Turns out it was just misplaced. 4. Put a roll of toilet paper in your backpack. 'nuff said. For the ladies; Freshette (REI)...look it up. You owe me. 3. Don't buy cheap ass hiking boots for kick-ass back country jamming. Unless you like having numb toes and skeezy toenails. If you go to the big REI sales, you can score barely used Asolo boots for $15. I kid you not. 2. Use checklist and pack with your partner side by side. There's nothing like sleeping in a tent with no poles. You can find lists on REI.com. 1. Bring your sense of humor. Cuz...trust me, something is going to go wrong. That two mile downhill you thought would be a welcome break will end up being the slog from hell and your toes might go numb, but so what. At least they don't hurt. Break out that collapsible bottle of Patron, zip your sleeping bags together and WooooHoooo! Oh...and I completely disagree with Nick B. It's a damned good idea to become a member. When it comes to REI, you buy their membership Once, yes just ONCE and you earn dividends each time you buy from them, and then at the end of the year, they send you the voucher t go redeem it at their store. I mean how cool is that???!!! You must be asking how much their membership is right? It is just pay $20. Yes just $20 until you are alive! It is just awesome. As an archaeologist, you may know that how much I am in need of camping gear before I go to the field for dig, so REI is a one stop shop for me to get everything I need just for that purpose. The customer service has been always good. Every time I need help, a friendly associate tries to help me. The associates never let you to wait in line for too long, they try to help you as soon as they can. I have to mention their one of a kind sales as well. I mean sometimes their stuff goes on sale for 50% off. If you haven't visited an REI store, you should. You will be amazed by the quality of the products that they offer. Yes, you might say you like sport chalet and sport authority better, but honestly and personally out of all the sport places, REI is my FAVE as long as my membership is active..:-) read more

My husband and I have never been into an REI and let me say we had a great experience here. The staff was extremely helpful and answered all of our questions to the best of their knowledge. My husband asked multiple questions about a backpack and the sales rep (I'm sorry I didn't catch his name) helped him find a backpack that best fit his body and made sure it was appropriate for our upcoming aventure. He really knew his stuff and gave us great tips and information. I also purchased some hiking boots and the sales rep ( of course I didn't catch his name either. I'm sorry guys!) was very helpful and informative. Both sales reps were willing to help and always with a smile. Great, well-stocked store with very helpful and informed employees. I went this past weekend and there were a ton of clearance items as well as a members-only garage (?) sale... so basically, marked down returned items. I didn't purchase anything from that sale, but it was just another reminder that it's worth being a member (and membership is lifetime). They have a FANTASTIC return policy. For the outdoor retarded like myself REI is awesome for getting yourself the gear you need to get into shape beyond the elliptical machine at the gym. That is a fair assessment of where I was before hopping on over here with my outdoorsman of a bf. I don't think I had ever stepped a hiking boot wearing toe inside one of these places before hand. Now not only am I am member (get 20% off any regular priced item when you join) but I was able to buy all the hiking gear that I need and maybe even look like I know what I am doing when I am out in the sunshine getting some exercise over the weekends. We went this past weekend for a used items sale and scored some awesome stuff at waaay cheap prices. rei brand camelback $20 vasque women's hiking boots $10 (exactly like the new ones I just bought weeks earlier for $125 hiking pants and a workout top $25 and not on sale but needed to get too: hiking poles w/ shock absorbers $75 I saved a ton at the sale and its totally worth it to be outfitted in the right gear so you don't get hurt while having some fun outside. Oy oy oy. I've gone to this REI a number of times, but most recently it was in March 2015, so everything written here applies to that date or earlier. The service here varies by department: -The shoe department was EXCELLENT. The girl who helped me find and lock down vegan shoes at a different location probably hated my guts for my crazy request, but she didn't show it at all! She was friendly and went way out of her way, which was awesome and much appreciated. Those shoes, by the way, are the greatest. I'm lucky enough to need to wear them often and I'm really grateful to have them. -Men's clothes was vacant of any employees and really frustrating to navigate. The time I went to buy a jacket, I eventually got somebody (who ended up being a rock star), but I think I missed a couple birthdays along the way. -Had help quickly around the tents. -Around the backpacking bags I got help right away, but the dude was annoyed as hell about being at work or something. His lack of enthusiasm was contagious. I still bought a bag, though, as I had a gift card to blow and needed one anyway. I ignored his advice about the type of bag I should get based on the trip I was doing and I can comfortably say, post trip, that I was right about not needing as much space as he suggested. He did point me to a super legit bag in the range I opted for, so thanks for that dude. They're extremely pushy about the membership, which is a major negative. Everything here is also typically overpriced. You can go buy the same non-specialty stuff on Amazon or at Target/WalMart/wherever else for a tremendous markdown (e.g., camping plates and bowls, cooking utensils, flashlights). However, they do have some products that aren't sold elsewhere and their sales people tend to be knowledgeable, so that can be useful as well if you don't know wtf you're doing. This store is on the expensive side in my opinion, but they have a huge selection of items. No other place prepares me for the outdoors more than going indoors to REI! I find EVERYTHING here! Sure, a lot of things seem like they cost quite the pretty penny. But they have A LOT of sales, my favorite one being the USED GEAR sale, where all this cool stuff that's still useable is being sold for dirt cheap. There's nothing a little laundry won't fix. Someone's trash might just be your treasure. From clothes to camping to rock climbing. They have it all. I buy a lot of camping gear here and I got a great deal on an "open-box item" camping roof bag. There's also a big selection of GPS for your next adventure and they even have spray that "re-waterproofs" your old gear. I've been to other REI's and this one seems to be my favorite one. I had quite possibly my worst retail experience here. You don't go to REI for the cheap bargains, you go for the quality merchandise and expertise, and I am sad to say, what was delivered was far below expectations. My hubby took me to buy a new pair of hiking shoes as a gift and was willing to invest a decent amount to get me a quality shoe. But not only was there no information to help me compare products, but the whole fitting process was a rather uncomfortable experience. It started with us looking around, and since there isn't a whole lot of selection in women's brands, it didn't take too long. We even had time to look at the clearance rack. Finally after waiting what seemed like ten minutes, I finally asked aloud, "Is anyone going to help us?" Now I am not one of those people that likes to be greeted and immediately catered to like a celebrity the moment I enter a store. I like to browse on my own before interacting with questions. But even Big 5 has sales associates standing on hand when you're ready to try on a size. The employee must have heard me and only then came up behind us to offer help, but by then, we had already gotten off to a bad start. No welcome, no greeting, no assessment of what I needed...fine, I wanted to try on a couple styles I liked based on appearance, and one that was on clearance since I had nothing else to go on. He was able to tell me the cost of one of them since it was marked on sale but had no price advertised. Everything is in the $100+ range except the discounted shoe which is still around $90. For that amount of money I'd like to know what I'm getting and why instead of going to the competing chain offering a sale for $30. There was no information on any of the shoe boxes and the fit, although comfortable at first, was, according to my sales associate, not right if my toes slide down to the edge of the interior on an incline. Don't all shoes? He couldn't adequately answer. Now, I will say being able to climb up a rock is a very nice store feature for trying on hiking shoes. But the salesman's solution was to go a half size up after only trying on one shoe. I've tried on enough athletic shoes in my life to know that every brand fits a little different. And since I hadn't tightened the shoelaces adequately for this type of rigorous test, I suggested we try that first. Well, tightening the shoe laces required an inordinate amount of effort and hurt my fingers which made me want to throw them across the room in frustration, but I'd rather that and have the accuracy. It didn't resolve his test, so he measured my foot. I could see it was exactly at 6, yet he still insisted I should try 6.5. I asked him how the sizing works. If it's different than standard street shoes. He was incapable of answering my question, giving a stock answer "we fit to the foot," which only served to aggravate my frustration. His other comment was that I have narrow feet. Well, no I have standard width, not wide. But I do have high arches. Now if he had said I had high arches, that would have instilled some confidence in his knowledge and capability in helping me assess and find the right shoe. I put on the next shoe, which even before I tried the rock was a bad fit, not contouring my arch in the right spot. Even though I know they do not fit right I climb up on the rock to see how they compare. He runs me through the same test which of course fails. I didn't want his opinion at this point, but I play the game. But by this time I wanted to just run out of the store. Only then does he try to assess what I want the hiking shoes for, to which I answer "everything". I have to spoon feed what I mean by that, since he doesn't know how to properly assess a customer's needs. I finally give him the head on the platter: "Anything from an hour hike to a 20 mile." Now, I know that many people who like outdoor sports have varying degrees of social skills, but if you are working in sales, you need to know how to deal with different types of people. My salesperson was apparently insensitive to a woman's reaction when you tell her she needs a bigger shoe, you better have a good reason why. So, as kindly as I could, I said I wanted to do some research online to get better informed on the brands and features (what I didn't say is because he had provided me with zero information on the latter). And to maybe come back. He then proceeds to tell me what brands not to buy (assuming I went elsewhere), one of which is a brand I've worn over many many hikes and actually liked...but with no information on why that brand would be inferior to what they were offering. If his sales skills were the equivalent of a commercial, I would have changed the channel in less than 30 seconds. Instead, I made as graceful an exit as I could, but almost felt like crying, leaving both my husband and I feeling pretty terrible. Unfortunately, this is the closest REI store to me, and it's a smaller one. Fortunately, this place is never crowded; and very easy free parking (compared to Santa monica, and the likes) I've never felt like I couldn't find someone to help me when I needed help, except once or twice at most. Each REI store carries different inventory, understandably. What I don't understand is why this location would carry less summer/beachy/ swim things than the beach locations. I think we're close enough to the beach to have similar inventory. :-) read more

This REI isn't as big as it seems. They have more attire than actual gear, which is a bummer because I typically want to go to an REI to get good quality gear. All of the items that we have purchased from this particular REI have stood up against the elements and have been well worth the (sometimes exorbitant) price. If you're a planner, be sure to look out for their sales that they have periodically. They post them at the store, or you can call and ask about it. They usually put seasonal stuff on clearance, and do them as needed. read more

Was here last night checking out their sleeping bags. I'm the kinda of shopper that likes to do all my research online, then go in the store and get a first hand experience. I was at a previous location and felt like I was being pushed towards their REI gear, and watched too closely by the staff, making me uncomfortable as I was browsing. I decided to check out this REI in Northridge, and felt my experience was fantastic. Every staff member that approached me was friendly and polite, while also not rushing me even though they were closing soon. I did my thing and checked out the items I was interested in while not being bombarded. Then when I had questions, the two guys in the department were extremely helpful, and knowledgable on their products, giving me first hand experiences and opinions on different bags they've personally used. I never once felt rushed, and to be honest, felt more like talking to friends here. While I have 2 REI locations closer to me, I will definitely be considering this location for my next need for camping gear. read more

5 peaks on the horizon... This is one of those reviews that has been a long time coming. I mean, just in the last few years, I've been to REI more times than I can remember. Whether it's to pick something up that I've ordered online or to browse their seasonal sales, REI has been the bees knees when it's come to outdoor equipment. Compared to the other REI's, well, with the exception of the REI in Santa Monica, this one is my favorite. The Northridge REI is located off of the 118 freeway at the corner of Reseda and Devonshire. Parking is never a concern as the store itself is planted inside of a huge strip mall. This particular REI is a two-story space and like all other REI's it can outfit most anyone with practically every outdoor need. You name the activity and REI more than likely has you covered. Cycling, hiking, backpacking, camping, rock climbing, etc., it's all there. Name brands at decent prices. Yeah REI might not be able to compete completely with the internet but their customer service, selection and brand lineup is a force to reckon with. As stated, I've been to this particular REI more than a few times and each time the experience has been perfect. A store this large can sometimes have issues with cleanliness and organization but that is never the case here. Items are always neatly organized and tagged accordingly...even during their seasonal sales. The staff is incredibly friendly though not pushy at all. You have a question and the staff is pretty knowledgable. Not just by coincidence but because REI hires people that are active and enjoy the outdoors as much as you do. It's a smart business model. REI's membership, as other yelpers have mentioned, is incredibly legit. The perks are worth it as well as the dividends your paid when you purchase new gear. I would give this store a 4.75 if I could. I am a member, and I like the dividend program. They have really well made stuff. There is a huge selection. i ended up getting some Vibram trek shoes here designed for hiking. Note: I live in Honolulu where hiking is usually in sand or dirt. Ok, so the only reason I couldn't give this store a full five stars was the uncomfortable feeling I got from the sales person. When I asked him if I could try on the trek shoes he gave me a free lecture on how they weren't made to wear on pavement - as if I were some kind of soccer mom who wouldn't be using them for their intended use. I told him I lived remote and planned on using them for hiking. He shrugged his shoulders and said "Well, you may not be used to having your toes spread out like that." To which I replied I am a yoga teacher and used to having my toes spread out. I felt like he wasn't going to get me the shoes to try on at all when he replied that the shoes weren't made for wearing when I did yoga (!) The problem was, the shoes were on sale, $69 for a shoe that is often sold for over $100, so despite his comments I insisted I wanted to try on the shoe. Honestly, this man never even met me before, I am sure I never met him - so I don't know why he assumed I wouldn't know what "trek shoes" are designed for - using them for yoga - sheesh!!!
