Ethical and green company, makes you fell better even if not lower cost than some! Cons: Prices can be a bit high, great equipment but unless on sale do not expect a deal. REO brand are always a good deal. Sales are great, membership is worth it. RC is not the largest store and missing some sizes and selection that say the Portland store has. I am sure there is an REI store in heaven! I am old enough and wise enough to give up my Macy's and Hollister addictions and spend all my shopping time with my hubby in REI. Now we are avid backpackers so naturally we love REI. This store has everything we need and everything we don't! We have been to quite a few REI stores. This one is actually decent size. The Henderson, NV store is smaller and Berkeley has one of the biggest REI stores evah! Anyways, they have a fantastic return policy. Basically if you are not satisfied return it. I just returned a Gregory Diva backpack from two years ago because it cracked at the waist belt. This was a known issue with this pack. They returned it no questions asked. They pretty much carry anything you need for backpacking in the store, and if not, they carry it online. From boots, to packs, to water filtration, to food, they have it. All the sales people are friendly and know what they are talking about as they all are outdoor enthusiasts themselves. They have a nice selection of clothing by North Face, Mountain Hardwear, Patagonia, etc. And a few times a year they send out a 20% off one item coupon. Believe me you need to use that on something special as you spend quite the bucks at REI - well we do! It pays to be a member as the dividend once a year is a nice surprise. read more

I've been shopping at REI stores since age 12, so around 35 yrs. I am very happy w/ my local store. I can't always afford what I want when I want it, but it's quality gear when I can. Good sales, incentives, and return policies. REI stands out in their field, and I believe they always will. Personable employees goes a very long way with me. I like customer service that is helpful but not overbearing and intrusive. Friendly and encouraging seems to be the order of the day, and employees have good general knowledge - not just about products, but also about the outdoor lifestyle. In other words, it not "just a job" for them. Respect. I could only have a brief conversation w/ the cashier I checked out w/ this morning but in that short time there was an exchange about similar goals and life changes. Healthy food choices and personal determination/goals to regain health after serious challenges is what I am all about, and it was so nice to make that connection and see someone else doing the same. I appreciate that employees are able to discuss not only their experiences w/ hikes, camping, and various sports when it's easy for them, but also when they have had to overcome similar physical limitations to what I have. (Me: Systemic Lupus, Fibromyalgia, Raynaud's Syndrome, dysautonomia, and a heart condition - try planning hikes with all that going on. lol) That brief moment this morning was motivating. This is probably one of my most visited places in the city. The location is convenient with light store traffic most of the time I went. Store is decent sized and feels like a wonderland with camp site displays and other outdoor information. Unlike similar displays in bass pro shop or cabela's, REI's are well designed and items used are very well represented, making the wants feel like needs. The store carries most outdoor brands and its own REI brand merchandizes with very limited varieties representing each brand and category. The online channel REI.com has much much more selections therefore shopping on REI.com becomes an extension. Having a local store makes the shipping and return easier and allow you to explore online and try brands you never had before and surprisingly find those ones you love. I would say the REI buyers have good picks on the merchandises they choose to carry. They will not disappoint you every season. The store does provide services like measuring and help picking hiking shoes and backpacks. Some of the store employees are knowledgeable. read more

If I could leave 0 stars I would .. hate to do this because my bf and I are avid rei shoppers and come here for everything we need. We absolutely loved the company. Horrible customer service at the rancho location. The manager who "helped" us was at least nice, but l the young woman who helped us before him had an attitude right when she walked up. Rolled her eyes and seemed to hate her job. Purchased nearly $400 hiking boots and on the very same day I got a coupon in the mail for 20% off any full priced item. Went in to return them to repurchase to get the $75 off which is a good chunk considering they're shoes.. they wouldn't let me do it whether I paid with the same card, another card, cash or open a new membership.. no matter how to spin it. That's a pretty messed up "policy" considering they have full 1 year warrantee on all their items and stand behind their word. They could have helped out a member but instead didn't and the girl stood behind her manager with this i-told-you-so-type of look. And the best part was when the manager asked "well how long have u been a member?" Why would that matter if I had a membership for 2 years or 10 years? Will u be more accommodating then? Doesn't make sense. We spend THOUSANDS on this place and a little good customer service never hurt anyone. Will not be coming back. read more

So I was so super exhausted looking for hiking shoes after sliding all over Etiwanda Falls this weekend in my Under Armour shoes and I really get anxiety looking for sports shoes. Then came Tony! He actually makes you feel like he not on cares about you getting the right shoe but makes sure you understand WHY you're purchasing the shoe. I have been an REI member for several years. I have patronized many different REI stores in California. The Rancho Cucamonga store is getting one star today because I couldn't give them no stars. I walked into the REI knowing exactly what sleeping bag I wanted. I checked online to ensure that they had it. I went to the sleeping bag area and waited for a few minutes... sure it's Christmas season I get it. I flagged down a female employee who just helped another customer... I asked her for help with a sleeping bag and as she walked away without slowing down or breaking stride she said "I'll send somebody over to help you" as she strode away looking over her shoulder. I waited patiently by the sleeping bags watching employees help other customers even walking up to the customers asking if they needed help. After idly standing there for a few minutes I started my stop watch and after another 7 minutes had passed I had to use my cell phone and call the REI and ask them to send somebody over to help me. Finally they dispatched somebody to help Me over their two way radio system. As the male employee went over to look for my sleeping bag a cheery female employee came over and asked if I needed anything.... I told her no, everything wasn't right and her smile turned to a frown and she walked over to run the registers after a half hearted attempt at an apology.... The Rancho Cucamonga REI customer service is absolutely horrible! I have never ever experienced this level of non-service and indifference. Marina, Arcadia, Huntington Beach, and Tustin definitely outshine the Rancho store.... What an embarrassment to the REI. Zero customer service, non-sincere apology.... when in the Rancho area I will be going to somewhere like Bass Pro Shop where customers are appreciated. Great customer service! I ordered a pair of boots online, but they didn't fit! So I brought them back to this REI to return them. The girl behind the counter looked a bit tired but she took care of my order immediately and ordered in for the right size of boots. Any outdoorsy person must respect the infamous recreational equipment inc. REI stores are not only fully equipped but far and few between. We all know what demand does, it makes us want it that much more. I get the hype, and they back it up. They have a lot of things you may need for camping, biking, kayaking, paddle boarding, HIKING, and many other outdoor sports you love. The location is good. Very visible from the street and right next to bevmo which makes this a treasure in it's own ;) So why only three stars you ask? Well I will tell you. This store, although awesome is awesomely over priced. It's obscenely over priced. They have all the great brands from the north face to their own signature brand at full cost. Even the clearance racks are $50 plus. As great as you are REI I would have to say I would pass on most items. I can find most items lower priced or not name brand for 2/3 the price. If you want to window shop or if you are making the big bucks this is the place for you. For me I enjoy because I am a dreamer. At these prices you kinda have to be. Other than that the staff is super nice, store is clean and presentable and they have all the bells and whistles a very rich outdoorsman would love! read more

I'm a hiker...I will camp on occasion but I'd rather trek the outdoors and then come home for a beer and a nice long hot shower. That being said...I like to be prepared...I like wearing and carrying the proper gear. The staff at rei always has been able to offer advice and suggestions on what I should carry on me when I'm out & about in the local mountains. While most people complain that rei is expensive and for snobs I beg to differ...I've bought two tandem kayaks, a raleigh road bike, camping gear, footwear, hiking gear...all kinds of stuff and I've found the prices to be comparable....and the quality superior than places like Big 5, Sport Chalet. What sets rei apart is their customer service. Only downfall is that this location is one of their smaller locations. read more

You can tell by my profile picture that I'm a dog. That being said, I'm not allowed in the store because I'm not a certified service animal. But, I know that REI is a reliable outdoor/adventure gear retailer and I know they carry dog accessories, I just know it. The staff in Rancho are prime. Carl reminds me of a war elephant who has crossed the Pyrenees Mountains in the 3rd century Punic Wars; just so sturdy and dependable when it comes to facing mountainous trails. Tony works in footwear and is the epitome of an REI steward. He's a legend for helping out anyone pawing their way along trails, bike lanes, rock walls etc. I appreciate REI's commitment to customer satisfaction. read more

Went in to distinctly buy a product that I have bought a long time ago and I couldn't find anyone in the clothing section to help me. I went and got someone (lady from the fitting rooms) to help me and instead of honestly saying she didn't know and getting someone, she BSed me around the clothing... Then some guy (rei sales guy) came to us and he also started BSing about the clothing offering me worthless knowledge about heavyweight material even though I had told him I wanted this to play sports in the sun... The one On my way! Wearing is spf 50 which is an Rei branded shirt... The he said... Well can you tell the difference between 30 and 50... Like a smart ass... Pissed me off so I walked away and didn't buy anything... I've been a member since ~2005 and have only encountered this type of worthlessness once before. read more

I had to go to this REI after my local one sold out of the bicycle I wanted. My local REI (Arcadia) was extremely helpful, answering questions, giving suggestions, letting me know shout discounts etc. I called ahead to this REI saying I was picking up a bike and please hold. They held it, but buying the bike was a terrible process! The man that helped me didn't explain anything to me at all. Asking questions, it was like pulling teeth. I did a test ride of the bike, ( which I had to ask if it was ok to do, whereas the other one was encouraging me to do so). They took my license and never gave it back! I live an hour away and have to go back to get my license. I take some of the blame for forgetting it myself, but days went by before I noticed it was missing. They never contacted me saying they still have it, in fact when I called they seemed surprised they had it. Anyway, the guy didn't explain their return policy or anything of that nature. They didn't explain all the paperwork involved in buying the bike, just basically handed it to me without a word. Then gave me an envelope with stuff inside, including two plastic tools that I still don't know what they are used for. No explanation, just handed it to me. Didn't even say thank you, no indication the transaction was even finished. I had to actually ask if we were finished, at which point the guy asked another guy if we were going finished, at which point I left and went to my local REI for the rest of the equipment I needed. To be fair, they were busy, BUT I didn't feel that was an excuse enough for such poor customer service. read more

I still spend obscene amounts of $$ at this store, but I've taken my business to other stores due to customer service issues. It's a hit or miss. Half the store is genuinely happy to work there and you have the other half who is obnoxious when you make a return (for valid reasons; no, it's not for something I used for three years and returned). Sports Chalet is a good alternative. I get the big ticket items for my yearly dividend, unless I encounter the snooty associates, in which case I've had no issues going east on Foothill to Sport Chalet or online to backcountry.com. read more

We've purchased everything here from bikes, shoes, backpacks, snowboards, jackets, nalgene bottles, all of it! We've even rented kayaks from them. Where do I start? We stopped by REI some months ago hoping to get advice about hiking gear for an upcoming hike. While there were a few associates around in the store, we got no assistance. Even when we went to ask for help, we were told to wait in a specific section for someone to come--and that took forever. And the advice we got was not helpful. He seemed like he didn't want to be there. But I assumed it was a fluke and didn't come to write a review. Fast forward to today, the REI garage sale. We'd been waiting for this event and were excited. We arrived around 9:15am to get our wristbands. The way it works is you choose one of four colors, and then when everyone gets their bands, they start a random drawing to determine the order. That lottery system makes sense and is fair, so props to them for that. However, things soon went downhill. After they drew the first color, they realized that about 5-10 people hadn't gotten their wristbands. So they gave them the wristbands and reset the whole drawing. Which was ridiculous. When it was our turn to enter the sale, they didn't honor the original return time (off by 20ish minutes). That's fine, though. What wasn't fine was the remainder of the experience. Oh, and they didn't even check our wristbands...so what's the point of the wristbands?! Here's what our experience was like once we actually got to enter the sale (which, we were warned by the kind announcer coordinating the sale, was smaller because of the post holiday season dry spell): 1) The whole sale takes place at the back of the store, next to all the dumpsters. So you get to shop while inhaling all the lovely rotting garbage surrounding you. 2) Inventory is messy...clothing hung on three racks and everything else pretty much in boxes so customers can rummage and dig through them like animals :/ 3) I know that some of the gear sold is used/returned, but some of the merchandise is just unacceptable. Needless to say, we came out with nothing. We even went back into the actual store to browse, but nope. Pretty disappointing for a high-end ish place. REI, please step up your game! read more

HORRIBLE SERVICE!!!! We stood in the backpack section for 50 minutes and no one would help. We asked for help and the guy said when he was done with the couple he was helping. He never got around to us meanwhile there are other employees just standing around. We ended up leaving without buying anything and we really need stuff for vacation. I will never come to this REI again!!!! With online buying, businesses should keep their customer service up to par. They lost customers who would have spent a lot of money in that store. read more

REI has the most helpful & knowledgeable staff. While their prices might seem expensive, they sell good products & the employees know how to use the equipment they are selling. They will go out of their way & take their time to help you. They also have a really good return/exchange policy. I had to return something (can't remember what), & I couldn't find the receipt for the life of me & I keep receipts for everything for years.
