I've been getting more into climbing so I figured it was finally time to get my own climbing gear. The employees were super friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. The guy who helped me was very patient with helping me pick out my gear and was very passionate about climbing as he answered mine and my friend's questions. I signed up for the membership with a one time fee of $20. It was a no brainer since you get 10% back and I was able to use the 20% off members only coupon for an item which evened out the membership fee :) read more

Very friendly customer service! Purchased a pair of bike bags to attach to the back of my bicycle. After a few rides the spokes of the bike some how caught and damages the bags. I brought it back to REI and honestly explained to them the issue I had. The return guy was very good and helpful by accepting my return in exchange for another bicycle bags! I'm always impressed with REI. They have a great selection, everything is clean and organized well, and they offer lots of classes. However, what impresses me most is their employees. Everyone seems to be passionate about hiking or another outdoor sport, and they take the time to share their knowledge and experience. This particular location is no exception. The only downside about this place is that you can spend money quicker than you make it! We spent nearly $600 in one stop here. They have everything you could want or need. First and foremost - shoutout to the guy who "couldn't find the bike section for like, 2 minutes". REI is the best go-to shop for all your outdoor needs. Yeah, they may be pricey in some areas and you get what you pay for. We're talking survival here, don't settle for the bargain buy. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. This place can be dangerous in that I stop in for something specific and have to will myself not to buy 1/2 a dozen other cool things. They have a broad selection of all things outdoors and a super friendly staff. They're frequently not always the cheapest though. read more

I've been going to REI for a long time, and they've always provided High Quality gear and great customer service. Except this time..this time I met Bobby and some of his cronies. Bobby blew away great customer service and ushered in a new era called "Ultra Superior Customer Service". This guy talked on the phone with me when I was too lazy to come in, walked around the store for hours when I did, and did all this over the course of 3 days as I geared up for Iceland. At one point it came time for him to clock out, and at such time he did. Then came back in civilian clothes and proceeded to school me further until every need was met! Needed a new bike after I broke a pedal on mine and decided it was time to upgrade. I had done research on bikes previously but wants to ask the associate's, Zach, opinion on bikes. He lead me to what I had previously decided on based on the what I told him I was looking for in a bike. After a brief ride around I decided the bike was for me. Purchased the bike and was happily on my way. Until I couldn't fit the bike into my compact car. After 5 or so minutes of trying Zach came out to find me because I left my paperwork in the store. He helped me fit the bike into my car and I was on my way. Zach is #1 in my books. read more

Have to admit I love coming here to look around. Store is always very clean and they can have some really good sales. Definitely get the membership if you think you are going to shop here often enough as you get $$ back on all your purchases. However, the customer service is lacking at the store, if you can find help at all. Won't deter me from coming, but I'll do any research I need beforehand. read more

When it comes to the greater Sacramento area this is the best location. They carry more items than folsom or roseville. Use REI for what they are best for, their refund policey. Most people don't realize that just becasue REI doen't sell a certain item in their store or online you can have them special order it and get the same great 100% guarantee. Personaly I won't buy stuff anywhere else unless the item is way cheaper and I know that I will not have any reason to ever return it. read more

I have always had a good experience at this REI - from bikes to clothing, and checkout is alwaysgood. Tonight I went looking for a good running shoe, not knowing anything. Robin, the guy working that area tonight, was AWESOME. I have never had better service for anything anywhere. This is my first review on Yelp, he was that good. He was able to take care of me and 3 other customers simultaneously while being patient and answering all questions, offering help and advice, and being very open about shoe specs. I came in expecting just to get an idea about shoes, and left spending $300 on two pairs (plus socks!) and being very very happy. Hours later, I'm still talking to my boyfriend (who went with me) about how awesome Robin's customer service and knowledge was. I not only recommend this REI overall, but Robin deserves special commendation for being absolutely fantastic at his job. read more

The quality in their bike shop is far above most around. The staff is amazing given how friendly they are and how they go out of their way to help accomplish your goals. This REI is not as nice compared to some of the others I've been to. I went in looking fr cycling shoes, and couldn't find any help. When I did find help, the person I spoke with didn't seem to have a clue! I'm really not sure what I expected from a HUGE chain like this, but I don't remember ever having a bad experience here before this. read more

I had a Personal Outfitting appointment with Christa to help me go over my backpacking trip and if my pack was packed properly and my pack fit my body. As a female, it was so great to have someone who understood the needs of a woman in regards to keeping items to a minimum but still allowing for the most in comfort items. She gave great advice in terms of moisturizing wipes (this is important for women), keeping one's self healthy on the trip (going over what snacks to get rid of that weighed too much and provided minimum energy and what to replace them with), and other feminine needs I hadn't even considered despite being an avid hiker and experienced backpacker. When my pack was set she had me put it on and reset the straps so that the load was set and I would be balanced and secure. She even noticed that my chest harness was too small for my body and helped me change it out. My body feels so much better now. Christa even went with me around the store and walked around the items that I had forgotten about or that she recommended from her worldly travels. REI prices aren't cheap but they last. You get what you pay for. Anyone, novices to experts, should get a personal outfitting appointment. Women...I highly recommend requesting Christa. Super helpful and considerate of my trip, and I felt comfortable asking her all kinds of questions. read more

Maybe the prices aren't the best in town, but they stand behind everything they sell. I had a zipper break off some luggage I bought there and they happily gave me a refund 8 months later. Their shoe salesfolk are great and there's no better place to get camping/outdoor stuff in town. Wish they had easier to find sizes in the pants section though. I visited REI about a week before Christmas to select a particular gift for my outdoorsy brother. The prices at REI run high but they have a good selection and high quality products. The reason for my so-so rating was the customer service I experienced on this day. The item I needed to purchase was in a locked case so I ventured back to the customer service desk to ask for assistance as the 1 person I saw out on the floor was having a lengthy convo with a customer. The lady at the desk told me she would request assistance but since they also just received a phone call that required assistance, it may be awhile. WTH???? It's a week before Christmas and you only have 2 people to help customers? So I stood by the case for a few minutes and a nice gal was able to assist fairly quickly. Whew! Then comes the fun part....the line to pay. I was about 12th in line and there was 1 person working the cash register. ONE!! And because REI trys to upsell their "club" to every customer, each one takes twice as long as it really needs to. Eventually a 2nd cashier showed up, I bought my item, and was out the door. While I was pleased with my purchase and my brother LOVED it, the whole experience was rather frustrating. I've been to REI several times in the past for "brother-gifts" but I'm not sure I'll go back. 4 Stars for quality and selection, 2 stars for customer service. read more

I will preface this review by saying that I consider myself an outdoorsman and an environmentalist, and my family has used REI as a primary source of outdoor equipment for over 30 years and I even have a current wedding registry at REI. Now, however, I will drive 20 miles to the Folsom or Roseville locations whenever I shop at REI, and I feel that I am being quite generous by patronizing (no pun intended) REI at all. I bought a pair of Chaco flip-flops at this location yesterday. I wore them for much of the day, doing lots of walking at a classic car show. The strap chafed my foot so badly that it began to bleed. I brought the flip flops back today to exchange them for a different pair. At the customer service desk, the clerk, I believe her name was Beth, she was of average dimensions with glasses and graying dirty blonde hair, offered to help me. I explained the situation to her. In a condescending tone of voice, she said "Honey, we told you to wear these shoes around your house for at least three weeks so as not to damage them" (??? I was never told this, and who on earth wears flip flops around the house for 3 weeks to avoid "damaging" them). She then asked me if I was a member. I said no. She said "Well, make sure that you sign up to become a member now, okay?" (Yeah, right, like I'm going to give them any more money after she talked down to me like that, and the way she worded it sounded like some sort of threat). She then said "Look at these shoes....Next time please wear them around the house before demanding a refund. We don't want to add any more to our landfills. We are very environmentally friendly here at REI" I just couldn't take it any more and said "I am very familiar with REI thank you very much madam". She did grudgingly give me a refund, with which I bought a pair of Reef flip flops which I can already tell are much more comfortable and I have no intention of confining them to household-only use for three weeks. However, when I went to pay for my new Reefs, the cashier asked me if I was a member. I said no. Then she said "Are you aware of the benefits available to you through membership?" I said "Yes". She then asked "Then why are you not a member?". I said "Can I please just buy these shoes today?", she said "Yes, you may, do you have your receipts from your previous REI purchases?" I said "I don't know". She said "If you bring them in, you can get discounts from your previous REI purchases" (Didn't I already tell her I wasn't interested??????). I paid for the flip flops and left REI's Cal Expo location for the very last time. I felt that I was spoken to in a very rude and condescending manner and given offensively aggressive sales-talk after I politely said that I was not interested. I am disappointed and I will be taking my business to other locations, if not other companies. read more

Stopped in today, ready to drop some bucks on a high-end sleeping mat. EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED with the lack of customer service. Could not find my choice on the shelf. I waited, and waited, while a clerk went on and on to an older couple. Not once did he acknowledge me. Another clerk finally wandered over, and immediately started helping a large man who had just appeared. Am I invisible? Did I need to bring a man to be seen as a customer worthy of helping? The selection is good here, but the help sucks. Way too laid back - I do my research, and came In ready to spend. I'll spend my bucks elsewhere, and I urge you to do the same. read more

These guys are great. they really are. I came in, checking out road bikes...and they were so helpful. I told them up front that I wasn't ready to purchase yet, and it didn't change their demeanor towards me at all. They really took the time to show me how to check a bike for a fit, and to talk about what I need in a road bike, as opposed to what might not be necessary for a rider like me. 4/5 because sadly, they didn't have any bikes actually in my size. Walked in looking for a good deal on snow boots. Found a pair of Baffins with a 40% off tag. I then proceeded to ask an associate what is the price of the boots. Sales associate checked and said 89.99. Then another associate said it was 40% off of the 89.99. I then proceed to try on the boot and decided to purchase them. When I walked up to cashier the boot rang up 89.99. I told the cashier, younger blonde gal, that was the wrong price, but she refused to honor the 40% off and didn't even check with the shoe department sales associate who told me the price was 40% off of 89.99. I then asked to speak with a manager, so the cashier called up Ralph. I explained to Ralph the situation, that not one, but two so called shoe specialists told me the price was 40% off 89.99, which should be around $54 and that was the price I should pay regardless if they made a mistake. Ralph would not honor the price off the boot and told me the best he could do was $70. I was very upset and did not buy the boots based on the simple principle of REI not doing the right thing. They should've called up the shoe specialists to the checkout counter so they could admit the mistake and honor the price they originally quoted me. Too bad, they lost a lifetime customer over a $15 price difference; shame on Ralph for not knowing how to exemplify the customer service REI prides themselves on. read more

Very happy with the service I received, and hiking boots that I bought. The service was very polite. Demanding customers that thought they should be served before others, others just rude. Even myself, tried on 5 different pairs of boots and not a hitch. The staff was very patient and knowledgable. Needless to say I purchased two of the five I tried on! My wife was present and impressed with the whole experience. Wrapping this up, thanks staff of REI, we had a great time! read more

I have always been a fan of REI and am a member; I've never even thought about writing a review because I EXPECT good customer service given the fact that they are a co-op. However today I had an employee go above and beyond. Chris spent an hour with me looking for a backpack to hold a Camelbak 3L reservoir. Given my short stature I knew this would be difficult. We found one that didn't come with the reservoir but would hold one; given the reservoir is $35 I balked at the $90 price tag of the pack. He went to customer service and found out that last year's model was available online in a slightly different shade for $60!! And it could be shipped free to my home. I truly appreciate his initiative and great customer service!! He's a recent transfer from Fresno and I hope the Sacramento store appreciates him as much as I do! I only gave 4 stars because the cashier in the front who rang me up was not so friendly...maybe it was too early in the morning for him but he didn't give me any friendly vibes. read more

Buyer beware. REI does not back up faulty product. Poor customer service and very expensive as well. I bought an expensive pair of hiking boots a few seasons ago (LOWA brand) and they have less than 30 total miles on them. The uppers still look almost brand new and the tread has very little wear. On a short 3 mile hike earlier this week, both boots had the tread peal completely off. I had to hike out over rocking trails on what remained of the insoles....the tread was gone....ouch! I took the boots to REI today and they refused to offer me any kind of support. In fact, two rude staffers told me "Boots wear out, even if they are sitting unused in your closet....after 4 years, you need to buy new boots". REALLY REI? Of course, they tried to sell me a new pair for $200+. I found some Solomons that seemed good (not going to buy LOWA's again) and after getting the size and specs, I came home and ordered them from Amazon for $60 less. So, REI has become a place I check out gear, then I will buy it somewhere online. It will be less expensive, will come to my doorstep and they can't do any worse in terms of customer service. REI used to be my favorite store....but no longer. Did I mention that I bought over $550 worth of backpacking gear from REI last week.....this fact didn't move the staffers at all when I talked to them. It is sad for me to post this, but I think other customers need to know how poor the service has become at the Sacramento store and that REI is not the same place it used to be. Be careful. I took my new skis to REI to have the bindings mounted. They messed up the mounting, I complained, and they did the right thing by ordering replacement skis. That took forever but yesterday finally brought the happy ending. The replacement skis arrived at REI at long last and REI did a flawless job mounting the bindings. To my surprise, REI insisted on rebating me the mounting costs as a way of saying they were sorry. As a matter of customer service, they didn't have to do that, but it is very much appreciated. I promised to spend the rebated money at REI, thanked the staff and thanked the store manager. It wasn't REI's fault that the ski company made mistakes with the replacement skis. In my view, REI totally redeemed itself by owning the problem, fixing it, and making this customer very satisfied. I've been an REI member since the early 1970s and I'm an REI fan once again. read more

I'm a big fan of this store. We love going to their used gear sale. It's always well organized and a fun time. I buy nearly all of my gear here because we have the lifetime membership and earn some money back at the end of the year. Staff are helpful and knowledgeable and friendly. I don't ever feel like they are trying to up sell us either. The pricing at any REI is a little higher than Sports Authority, but you get unparralled service at REI and no questions asked return policy for anything you buy there in a lifetime. We have had a katadyne filter break. We were able to return it and get a better replacement for it and also learned that we need to pack a filter straw or tablets always (fortunately, we do as a back up anyway). It was an expensive product so it was nice to be able to return it easily and without its original packaging. When I did relief work for Hurricane Katrina, I returned a ton of unused gear that I needed for the trip. They were super helpful. My only complaint is that at least on every other trip there's at least one odd ball in the bunch. We have the strange shoe girl who says my hubbies feet are "bruised" because he wears flip flops and that's why the boots he tries on don't fit how he would like. I've heard her say weird ass things like that before to other people. Not bad things, just odd. Not even sure if she still works there. We both actually buy our hiking boots and athetic shoes from Sports Authority because we just like their shoe options better. Overall, I love REI and their satisfaction and quality guarantees and their wide range of pricing. They also have a place where you can rent equipment if needed. read more

I am so torn between about how I feel about this place. I browsed online to look for a new Garmin Forerunner GPS watch since I'm training for a marathon. Target had it for about $20 cheaper, but factor in the shipping and the time and it comes out to about the same. I called to confirm that they had it and drove over. I walked up to the case and saw it gleaming at me. I looked around for a sales associate. None in sight. I waited 7 minutes. Nobody even acknowledged me. I ambled around, and saw a customer service desk. Three workers were standing there talking to each other. I hesitantly walked over. "Um, I want to buy a watch." "Oh, I'll get somebody over there." I return and wait another five minutes. By this time I'm amazed at the fact that I have $200 dollars burning a hole in my pocket and no one will take it from me. Please, I just want to give you money and you give me watch. Finally a guy sees me while still helping someone else. After he started helping me my experience became exponentially better. Everyone was incredibly nice and quick. I suppose the workers don't get paid on commission. The return policy seems to be amazing from what the checkout guy told me. read more

I've shopped at this particular REI store on a few occasions: Once to purchase a gift card, once to find versitile pants for travel/hiking/casual wear, and most recently to look at bike helmets. There is a large selection of clothing to choose from. Specific to my needs, the type of pants I was looking for came in a variety of styles and sizes (i.e. I found some petite/short sizes that work for me). When I visited the store to look at bike helmets a couple weekends ago, I was disappointed in their limited selection (and high prices!) of women's helmets, so I tried on a few to try to gauge my size to purchase online from another retailer later. I figured while I was there I should make my trip worth while, so I took a look at the type of pants I'd purchased in the past (I've lost a little weight since my last purchase) and was happy to find a pair of green pants to my liking! I do feel that REI is overpriced, but they are all about quality and I know my pants will last a long time and be worth the price tag in the long run! The store was swamped on this particular day because of a 20% off 1 item sale for members, so I waited in a long line that surprisingly moved fairly quickly (10 minutes wait at most). The employee who assisted me at the register was friendly and informative and seemed in control in the busy atmosphere of the store at the time. I ended up signing up for a membership because my 1-time payment for membership ($20) was just about covered with the discount I received on my pants for my 1 item 20% off (about $16) - The employee was good about explaining this and selling the membership to me in a pratcical way. I've been shopping at REI for close to two decades now. They always have the best name brand gear in stock and on the floor. The customer service couldn't be better. Join their membership program and they basically will let you exchange, return, refund anything anytime. I went there early on Black Friday expecting big deals but walked away very disappointed. That's really the only con to this store. They don't have the best sales or prices. You're better off just shopping their outlet stores online if you're looking for a good deal or wait till the end of a season and then shop their main online store. Usually by the end of the season in store sales come around they are down to weird sizes and unwanted goods. I like the fact that they carry good brands, and that their in store REI brand makes great cheaper equipment as well. This is the complete one stop shop for any outdoor enthusiast.
