BUYER BEWARE Believe the negative reviews on: - defective products - ridiculous delivery delays and - the deceitful sales practices. Buying from Costco is a much better option. The Costco service and warranty are so much better. The Human Touch distributor is super accessible, very friendly, and they do in home service as well!. Here are the RTB People affiliated with the Menlo Park store. Note: They own the other 2 locations in San Mateo and Sacramento as well. Cody Paz (Store Manager) Robert "Rob" Walker (Franchisee) Juan Garcia aka "JG" (Delivery guy - not in store) In-Store (Scam Scene) Service at Relax the Back is deplorable. The sales floor guy (Middle eastern guy) completely ignored me when I walked in. The Store manager Cody came over to me, but as with all Sales professions, Sales people are nice and helpful right up until the money has left your pocket. Cody would be no different. I went in to Menlo Park to buy a massage chair on 10/28/24. I found one (The Human Touch) as soon as I walked in and was ready to take it home that day. Cody talked down about the chair's color (blue), which I didn't mind, to make me not like the chair. The chair was on sale, so he upsold me to a $11k chair ($10,911.41 total out of pocket), the Quantum Pro by Cozzia. The chair was $1,000 off online, but I didn't know this. Cody promised me he'd beat any deal online. He swore by the service, saying if anything was wrong they will right the ship. He was doing his job and selling me hard and fast. He offered me a $1,000 discount, free white glove delivery service ($650), and a free pillow. The catch: The chair wouldn't be delivered for 2 weeks. I asked Cody to confirm the delivery date. He said it would definitely be there in by 11/11. He said that I could come in daily and use the chair *WARNING: Here's the BIG problem I ignored. * Cody said there might be a problem getting the chair because he didn't see one in the warehouse. I offered to buy the chair he had on the floor, but he said no. He then said there was one in the warehouse but it was marked as defective/RMA. Eventually he said he found one, so we completed the sale. I left the store with my pillow in tow. I wanted a Tempurpedic pillow, but he talked me out of that too. I visited the store maybe twice in the 14 days I was waiting for my $11k massage chair. Each time the other floor sales guy ignored me and Cody's "nice-happy to help" sales guy mask came off. Cody was impatient with me, which was weird, since each time I was in the store, I made a purchase. Crazy right? Delivery Experience (Terrible) I never asked Cody for delivery updates. I just trusted him that it would arrive as promised. It did not. Cody called me on 11/11 asking if the delivery guy reached out to me, to which I responded no because he hadn't. Cody then gave me Juan's name and number and said if he doesn't reach out today 11/11, he'll definitely reach out tomorrow 11/12. I phoned & texted Juan to get a delivery date and time and he was dismissive and disrespectful. He said they couldn't deliver until Thursday 11/14. The order was now late, so I cancelled it on 11/11 at 7:13pm via an online request to cancel. Rob Walker calls me after hours to try to save the sale. Make no mistake about it! I noticed the chair was already unboxed and was defective. He unloads it in my place, and leave. I go ask him to plug it in to make sure it at least works. He plugs it in, the light comes on, so he says "It works!" while running out of the door without doing a test run. Juan said "If there's a problem, you can just call the store." After I insist, he agrees to do a test run. The feet attachment moves. He said okay it works and leaves again. *Well the rest of the chair didn't work. $11k dollars, 2 weeks later & time wasted.* I believe they sold me the defective chair Cody said was in the warehouse. At 4:35pm, I call the store immediately. Cody asks me to do a bunch of troubleshooting things I've already done, and then tells me he's on his way. I don't want this. I ask to have Juan take the chair back but he insists he wants to check it for himself. Same result. I ask them to take the chair back but they want to keep trying to figure out the problem. On 11/13, Rob admits neither of them know anything about the chair because it's so new. Now it overheats. I mention to Rob and Cody that I didn't really get the $1,000 discount Cody offered. They both refused to honor it, and maintain their deceitful sales practices. I cancel, ask them to remove the chair since it's not working and refund me my money. To keep an unsatisfied customer out of the store away from potential customers, they gave my refund check to Juan to deliver to me. Never knew Jacki til this review. I hope my review helps you get a better deal/service from them. It's wild how they attack you because you gave them feedback on an experience they created for you, instead of fixing their problems. I realized I might be having low back pain from the lack of lumbar support on my Steelcase Leap and Herman Miller Aeron - which I've been using for basically a decade at this point, so I started researching the perfect office chair. I spend a ton of time at my desk for work/gaming, and my research took me in the direction an Anthos chair which apparently had amazing lumbar support. I went to Relax The Back solely to try that chair out thinking it was gonna be the winner, didn't really like it, then Cody steered me toward a chair from a brand I'd never heard of (Lifeform). Very little information about the smaller company online, but working with Cody - who is awesome (and amazingly patient) by the way - he guided me to probably the best chair in the world for me. I bought the chair ~3 months ago but am just now reviewing it, and I love it. Thanks for all your help Cody, I'm glad I took the risk on this unmarketed chair thanks to you steering me to it! As an addendum, I normally leave reviews on Google and then copy/paste the same one to Yelp whenever I have a good experience with a company. I'm glad I never looked this place up on Yelp before I went because I would have been dismayed by all the 1-star reviews. When I received the chair, found that the fabric I chose was not comfortable. But Robert went above and beyond to help facilitate an exchange for the same chair with a different fabric. Update as of 4/12/21 The entire process has been a nightmare. The crux of the issues are ..... this Relax the Back store is individually owned and operated. What does it mean for you?! * If you order, you pay the full amount and hope that there are no shipping delays from the manufacturer. In my case, I paid and waited 2 months for a chair. Meanwhile this store is holding onto $1300 of my money. Hypothetically, if the store went out of business during the 2 months, I could kiss my money goodbye. My advice: 1) Put a deposit down and pick-up your purchase from the store. Don't have the product shipped directly to your home. 2) If you go the route of drop-shipping, don't believe the shipping date on the Sales Order. 3) Remember the staff in the store is paid on commission. They make money when they sell. You should be skeptical of anything the salesperson says. Lastly, don't believe when the salesperson says, "I'll give you shipping updates" OR "Please pay in full so we can place the order." * If you buy from this store, you should be prepared to do the legwork of calling, emailing and leaving voicemails multiple times on shipping updates. Don't expect much post-sale customer service from this store. Don't call the website # because they can't do anything. In my case, I mostly chased the manufacturer, Humanscale for shipping updates or issues with the chair. I couldn't get any updates from the group that runs the website, which is a separate party to this store. My advice: 1) Relax the Back resells product so try the product in the store, THEN order directly from the manufacturer. read more

I had bought a special video game play seat that had speakers and subwoofer built in so you would 'feel' the game and gives you a more personal experience with my new home theater. Unfortunately whoever designed the chair must have also designed the awful concave seats on airliners or used one as a model. Sitting in the chair for prolonged periods of time really started to be uncomfortable so I bought a gel pad at Costco and then went to Relax the Back after I saw a lumbar support on their website at a reasonable price to remedy the large design defect in the chair I bought. When I arrived at Relax the Back in Menlo Park early Saturday morning I was the only patron and after perusing the store saw everything was well stocked. When I told them what I was looking for they brought out a floor sample one for me to test to make sure it was exactly what I needed. This was great customer service to let me 'try before you buy.' I also had an extensive conversation with Chris Neves who speaks from personal experience as she suffers from back issues and wears a back brace! She demonstrated a lounge chair that inverts you to relieve pressure off your spine as well a massage the back muscles. This was a bit over the top for me but sort of fun to try it out. So if you suffer from back issues this might be the place to find something to help you cope with it! read more

Went in to look at options for a kneeling chair. The staff were friendly, and the woman who was working (I don't remember her name... this was on 9/30) was especially helpful and patient. I ended up going with a very comfortable Varier Move stool. Since they didn't have the color I wanted in stock, the employee helping me worked hard to clean up the floor model for me, which I really appreciated. I had a back surgery 3 yrs ago and finally decided to buy one of the zero gravity chairs. I was sold on the craftsmanship, nice leather, back heater, ect.. had the chair over 1.5 yrs and I wish I would have found a chair that can also move in a stretching type movement. This chair lifts the legs and then tips back. When I sit for longer than 30 min, I realize my circulation is cut off. That's when a 3rd chair movement is needed. We just purchased a number of Lifeform office chairs from Relax the Back in Menlo Park. I was lucky Barbara answered the phone! She made it possible to complete the transaction start to finish without having to fight traffic and make time to travel to their store. Since these chairs are made to order, there were a lot of possibilities and decisions, so it was great that she handled everything on the phone, via e-mail, or though regular mail (samples). Barbara even worked with me to keep the cost reasonable. Since Lifeform chairs are made to order, it does take a while to get them, but we not only received them a little earlier than promised, Barbara kept me apprised of the progress while they were in production. Delivery day arrived and ran smoothly. Juan assembled all the chairs and Barbara and Rob did a great job getting everyone fitted, answering many questions, and even going back around to refit those of us who "weren't quite sure." I came here last week purchase a couple Temperpedic neck pillows & try out the Temperpedic Adapt Hybrid, an office chair foot rest, & zero gravity chair. I went back to this store, where I had purchased the chair, worried that replacement parts might no longer be available. Imagine my surprise to discover that not only were parts still available, but the store had one in stock, and it was free! Apparently, my Lifeform Dream Wave chair was guaranteed for life! Dear Relax The Back, Apparently we're having a communication problem. I am not a bank. Three weeks ago I purchased an overpriced ass pillow here as part of my "make the horrible commute more pleasurable" plan. As I was paying IN CASH for my overpriced ass pillow the clerk made mention of the fact that if I didn't like it, I could return it in 10 days. Five days later, I returned the overpriced ass pillow that didn't make a lick of difference (maybe I shouldn't use "ass" and "lick" in the same sentence but whatever). Since I paid in cash I expected to get my $92.86 back. Wrong. Apparently the clerk that helped me with my transaction failed to mention that any returns over $50.00 would be refunded via check. Yet ... I didn't pay by check. I paid IN CASH. As far as I know, cash clears the bank pretty quickly. No mention of this policy is on the receipt. Oh, but it's on the 8 1/2 X 11 sign on the register desk. Silly me. It's now been 17 days since I returned the overpriced ass pillow and I still don't have a check. I went to this store on Friday 9/20/13. i have just developed "Shoulder Impingement Syndrome"--probably due to stress and repeated shoulder injuries in soccer. It's quite painful. I also wake up every day with a very stiff neck. So, I went to this place in order to get a pillow that would hopefully support my neck better and make me better. The salesperson was certainly helpful. She assured me that my neck would get better with the high end pillows that they have. I picked one that was supposedly going to help me since I sleep on my side. It was $140!!! I decided to buy it despite the price as I was desperate for anything that would help me. I tried the pillow for two nights and I felt a LOT LOT worse! It just wasn't working for me. I tried today to return the pillow and they simply refuse to return it or swap it. The reasoning is that it is not "sanitary". I completely understand that argument--but if you sell a pillow for $140 (at probably a 95% Gross Margin), you should allow a poor first time customer who is not happy to return the pillow. You don't have to resell it. It should be part of doing business in the very high end of the market. Anyways, I am out $140 and with an exotic pillow that I cannot use! I am never going back. It's too bad as I was considering buying reclining chairs from them at $2,400 each (4x for my media room). They are out over $10K of business because they won't take back a $140 worth of merchandise! read more

I purchased my second chair from RTB. The first one, years ago, saved my neck and I used it for years. (Sold it due to covid). Adri helped with my current chair. She was awesome. The chair arrived much earlier than expected, and I picked it up and brought it home, and then realized there was an issue with the fabric. Best sales staff I have come across in a while. They listened to our every word and worked hard to find a zero gravity chair that would work for us. They found one in stock (at the warehouse) and it was delivered in a couple of days. We chose the Novus and it delivered with a heat timer issue on the back heat controller. We chose the Novus because it is great and American made. I called the mfr. and the phone was picked up right away and they are putting a new heater timer in the mail right away. I needed a new pillow, my neck had been killing me for weeks. After 15 minutes of explaining what I currently sleep on and pain I was experiencing, I left with a contour memory foam pillow, leg support pillow and goosebumps(orange massage balls) and $140 later. I could have found the contour memory foam online cheaper but when you can try it out, the salesperson was helpful, I can take it with me immediately and wake up the next morning without neck pain then the higher cost is worth it. They also have those awesome massage lounge chairs with massaging leg attachments, not your dad's barko lounger. If you spend the money for a plasma screen TV, you might as well drop another $2K for one of these leather beauties. If I win the lotto, this will be one of my first purchases! I love this store. I went a few weeks ago to find something to use when I drive to work. I usually sit in traffic for an hour or so and can barley stand to even get out of the car, Daniel the store manager helped me find a cushion to use for my back. He was so knowledgeable too, just knew exactly what it was that was causing the pain. 6 years or so ago I bought several expensive products from Relax The Back, about $7,000 worth. For the most part I have been very happy with the products. In fact, if I had to rate Relax The Back on their best products I would give them a decent rating, but based on their salespeople support and every subsequent contact I have had with Relax The Back, and this particular store specifically has just been miserable. Today I walked in with some questions about how to replace the mattress pads on the expensive ( $4,000 ) convertible sofa bed Relax The Back sold me a few years ago. I could see almost in fractions of a second the dumpy salesperson lose interest in talking to me when he realized I was going to ask him for some information and he did not think he could get a commission out of this. If he had bothered to wait and listen ... but ... It's clear the guy did not know anything about the current products, or the older products. He right away backed up, threw up his hands, started qualifying how the management changed and they had no relationship to what the store used to be. The salesperson looked like Hogan's Heroes' Sargent Schultz and like Schultz he knew nothing. He could not get away from me quickly enough. His eyes glazed over at anything that did not involve spewing out some company slogan or sales pitch. He did not offer to have a more senior person contact me, or give me the main number to Relax The Back. What a useless asset to the company. That alone would not have prompted me to write this 1/5 review, but over the years when I have come this store I have had every experience be something like this. Not only is their support poor, but their staffing and salespeople are like advertising robots. This is a company that should go out of business or who needs management geared at something other than fleecing people. I'm not supposed to write Yelp reviews that claim businesses change my life and such superlatives, cuz the Yelp software deems these as "suspect" and fake. But what if this shop actually did change the quality of my day to day life? I bought a custom ergonomically designed leather chair for my office. I customized everything from the level of support, arm rests, padding, wood type, type and color combination of leather, and also bought two rocking wooden footrests. Hot damn, frikkin beasts these people are. Total bomb and professionals. They know what they're doing, and then some. I have the crappiest posture and all sorts of lumbar back issues--I'm a spinal hot mess. This chair and footrest changed everything about how I sit and type and non-productive stuff, as well as waste a crap load of time surfing the net. The chair is built to last a lifetime, doesn't quit, the thing swivels to the beat of my whims, and then some. I love love and love it; I seriously am not sure what position I'd be in had I not plunked down the serious cash to buy this. I hesitated a lot before ordering it, because it's waaay more pricey than I wanted to pay, but I rationalized it by telling myself that it's a tax deduction. The staff were really accommodating coz I think my friend tried 5 chairs and like Goldilocks, nothing was right for her. The staff keeps on emphasizing that they are not commissionable (but we didn't ask) . This store has everything you need for alleviating any back pain like car cushions or pillows , exercises for the spine etc. The most popular zero gravity recliner starts at $3,000 but since its designs for the astronauts ... zero gravity with your feet up in the air will surely heal that pain in the back. read more

i've recently been on a lot of long international flights and both my back and my tailbone were killing me during long flights. I live in Menlo Park and I've always seen Relax the Back, but have never been in. Went in looking for some kind of solution that would take car of both my back and tailbone pain, but would still be portable during flights. These guys are extremely helpful. Ended up getting like a 15-20 minute consultation on the right way to sit at a desk, etc. Walked out with 2 very unique (and portable) self-inflating foam cushions that I had no idea existed. I now use these cushions every day to (a) sit on at my desk (b) drive with -- much more comfortable than the extra lumbar support that I was using, but still provides great lumbar support. And, if/when I find myself on a very long international flight, I'm going to take both cushions with me. My back is starting to feel much better already. I'm betting I paid a slight premium on the foam cushions, but the advice and service were great. And I probably saved on many trips to the doctor and/or occupational therapist. If you are suffering from constant back pain, check out the store. You'll be glad you did. read more

I wandered in here recently, as I never pass a back store without checking out the wares. I am a big afficinado of ergonomic and comfortable props. My tempurpedic bed is wonderful, as is my tempurpedic pillow...and my aeron chair is superb (all purchased before I found this place). I rounded out my collection nicely by purchasing a big triangular pillow made of tempurpedic foam, and a neck rest that you can adjust onto the pointy edge of the wedge. It enables you to sit up in bed and surf or read with much better support and comfort. I plan to go back on Sunday for a leg rest that in conjunction with the triangle (in a different position) will allow me to enter zero gravity, and sleep that way if I wish. The sales people are very helpful and the higher prices are quite justified on that count. It's going to be a dreary day when we have no more shops to shop in and all our stuff will come in amazon boxes after we've spent a couple of days hoping we're going to like what we get. Additionally, I would love to get one of their $2300 chairs. They are the most comfortable things I've ever sat in. read more

I did a lot of research and determined that Relax the Back has the best selection of high quality massage chairs in the Bay Area. Selecting the right chair is a very personal experience, requiring significant time trying out each chair's capabilities. Cleo and the staff in Menlo Park were very helpful and patient, explaining the functionality, encouraging my husband to sit in each chair for a full massage, answering questions, and letting us measure every dimension fully, without ever pressuring us or hurrying us in our decision during our multiple visits. Also - I expected to pay above avg because of his location in Menlo Pricey, but the TheraCane was cheaper than on-line! BUYER BEWARE! I purchased a desk chair at this store...LAST time I'll do that! For a total of $789 no less! It fell apart after just a few weeks. After dropping the chair off I was told the owner would call me back the next day. I waited over a week, then I called them back, on the fourth call I finally got a real person, not their answering machine. The owner told me he wouldn't take returned merchandise after 30 days, the manufacturer sent parts to fix the chair, they will fix it and I can come pick it up. Who wants a chair like that? Not me. I wouldn't consider buying anything else at this store. I wonder how many people are return customers here. Good luck relax the back...I'm going back to Costco, where their return policy makes way more sense. read more
