Working with contracting companies can be challenging, and Reliable was no exception. Communication and accountability were consistent issues throughout the project. There were missed deadlines, failed inspections, and a lot of back-and-forth that left things feeling disorganized. That said, I want to focus on what really matters -- the quality of the work. Reliable offered a lower price by marking several tasks as "By Homeowner." Some of that was expected (painting and landscaping), but others were a surprise (pouring concrete and finishing carpentry). Be cautious about what Reliable considers their responsibility. The work they did complete is less than a year old and I've already had a few issues -- door handles coming off, nail pops, faulty breakers, door drafts, along with squeaky, misaligned, and cracking floors. Follow ups with Reliable were met with defensiveness and eventually radio silence. Bottom line, I would not recommend Reliable for your next home project. Home improvement and repair should be of good enough quality to last the life of the home. The owners before us had work done by Reliable in 2002. We recently learned the work Reliable did was incomplete and unsafe. Supporting post which are in the plans (which we have) were NOT installed. It will cost us thousands to fix their mistake. Reliable Home Improvement did a major renovation in 2021 of our kitchen and first floor. Last week we had issue with the dishwasher and drainage. After investigating further discovered a clog in plumbing under kitchen sink related to the plumbing setup. I contacted Reliable to alert them, thinking I would need to hire a plumber to redo the drain setup. I got an immediate contact from the office and they set up an appointment for Reliable to come out the next morning. At 7:30 the next day Phil showed up, photo in hand of original install. As it turned out when the dishwasher was installed, after the kitchen was complete, the appliance company failed to put a zip tie on the PVC to hold it in place and it had fallen down. 5 minutes and problem fixed. 4 years after renovation and they still stood by their work! This is a follow-up review. A few years ago, we were running out of space and compared moving to adding on a room. We had a two-story front room and wanted to add a second-story bedroom. The first builder who came out for an estimate said that it would not be possible to build it without putting a support pole in the front room. Reliable was the second builder to come out and they were able to build the second-story bedroom exactly as we had envisioned it, creating supports without putting the post in the front room. They cleaned up nicely at the end of each day and kept us informed of the project steps. They took the time to show my curious young son how the equipment worked. it started well. Lots of promises, great communication. We had all the confidence in the world. Demolition occurred.. then things slowed. 3 days a week turned to 2 days a week and then maybe one day a week. Most communication stopped. We were not sure when anyone would be here or not.Then it all fell apart. Our 100k bathroom remodel went sideways. We found that the installation was not to spec and pointed it out. Great, they re-did the work. Problem was that re-work was wrong. Was a "sneaky" fix to align but was still off, significantly. At this point I decided to review the plans and was very surprised to find out a significant portion of the work was simply skipped. They didn't bother to waterproof the steam shower per the plans at all, the ceiling wasn't pitched per the plans and I was told that the pitched ceiling was "overkill".One would think they would be bending over backwards to make it right.. they did agree to restart and do things right, but all I heard was how much money they were losing. Heard it a lot...Once the shower was demoed, I noticed that there was piping that was not tied down...something the inspector actually pointed out to be done. Well, it was NOT done. That gave me more concern as I started to wonder what else wasn't done correctly. Totally lost my confidence in UNReliable's ability to do this correctly. It's been one issue after another. A new issue seems to arise each day.. but I keep being told how much money they are losing and they are fixing the issues. Mostly via text from the owner Tony, who apparently prefers to communicate like a teenager. We asked for a change to add a shower head.. well, be prepared for an 80% markup on anything, even after all the issues they sure wanted to make that cash back. Installation of a $399 toilet seat - $1058 - found out we were charged 2x by "Reliable" for the outlet needed for the seat, and then again "off the books" by their electrician. Oh ya, that guy installed a new 200 V box and now our toaster blows the circuit...been a month and that's still not fixed..who knows if it will be.. only $2800 for that and who knows how much more to make it right. (Turned out to be another 4 months)If you want to be reminded via text that they are the "Builder of the Year" and have an experience that equates to the professionalism of a stripper, these guys are for you. 9 weeks in and still a long way to go. Shower head addition - 4K to run piping 10 feet in an already" demoed to the studs" environment. Willing to eat the cost of a digital valve to do so - big miss in the overall design. What happened? $1825 valve had to be purchased from UNReliable for $3225 - that was the cost of the replacement. Quite an additional cost when considering the disaster so far. Oh ya, the markup on the shower head pretty much double the retail price. MASSIVE markups and condescending attitudes. Gotta make that $$ back from all the issues I guess. Remember, it's apparently my fault and they are not making any money. Quite a favor to have to do it correctly. I really should be more grateful.Was amusing the owner told me initially he couldn't come see the issues as he was in bed with a bad back that required surgery.. then 2 days later he apologized it took so long to get back to me cause he was playing golf.. sure hope my bathroom remodel experiences a similar miracle!I wrote this originally in Sept... it's now mid December and the bathroom is still not finished. We can't get our shower to work correctly. Many items are just messy - patching not done, doors not attached correctly, aromatherapy not connected - one issue was the hot line was connected to the cold and vice versa. They don't arrive when they say they are coming. Finally today I was told there is nothing more they can do and they have provided a lot of extras. What did they do extra? To start, I paid 1000s extra for anything that wasn't "contracted". The biggest item was the installation of a sauna. I guess they didn't include that - but they were able to provide incorrect measurements so that when it arrived it had to be adjusted. We had been under the impression installation WAS included. Hard to imagine 100K bathroom, but I install the sauna myself. One would think if it wasn't included it would be called out. One more item they purposefully misrepresented. They are up front that they don't paint but we hired their recommended painter, paid half.. it's not done either. What UNReliable does is send their handyman from time to time to make adjustments or try to fix things. Pretty much everyone is a subcontractor. The amount of problems and incorrect installations we have had are innumerable. I honestly could go on and on and on. The owner and his field manager have not been back or spoken to us since September.I was hesitant to give them the last payment without everything working but was told they wouldn't leave me hanging and it was required to schedule the inspector. We talked to Reliable about getting new panels for the dishwasher doors to match our cabinetry. Site coordinator was here daily and answered our questions regularly when not here (and we had a lot of them!). We put an entire addition on our home in just under 8 weeks - just a little longer than the projected timeline due to rain and one or two other setbacks. We recently had our master bathroom totally gutted and completely redone by Reliable Home Improvement. Were they the cheapest? We have no idea, as they were the only ones we actually asked to bid after evaluating several other contenders based on quality, reliability, and reputation. The following are the highlights of our fabulous journey: · Office staff was great, starting the first day we showed up unannounced. Continually throughout the project they were in contact with us regarding various permits and forms to sign. Once, we even had a home visit, saving us the 20 mile trip to their office. There is no way we could have kept up with city requirements without them. · Our designer, Dave K, was great. He came up with a design that exceeded our expectations, fully explaining the advantages/disadvantages of every aspect. He had to talk me into one major enhancement, and now I am so glad he did. · Over the years we've had several major home remodeling jobs, but it was Reliable that introduced me to the concept of having a Project Supervisor. I really feel this was key to the success of our project. I do feel Reliable utilizes only the best available contractors - plumbers, electricians, carpenters. However, even the best contractors need a watchful eye coordinating the myriad of activities. Michael C. filled this role to a tee, making sure each contractor fully understood every detail of the plan and following up to assure that they complied. It's comforting having a technical expert there looking out for your best interest. · The crew that did the prep work and then the final clean up were professional, efficient and quite courteous. Our tile and wood floors were all well protected against the heavy traffic that they would endure throughout the project. · The duration of the project was to be 8 weeks and up front we were provided with a day by day schedule of which contractor would be there. Almost to the end this schedule held true. Due to the pandemic the shower glass was on back order but they made sure we had a usable bathroom, other than the shower. The final completion date came in at 11 weeks. So the bottom line is that we're glad we went with a major firm, one with the experience and resources to do the job right. read more

What a joke this company is. We are looking for someone to remodel are bathroom. Are bathroom is medium size approximately 10" feet by 8" feet. They said on the phone that it would be between $40,000 and $70,000 and Mike the representative laughed on the phone and hung up on us saying we don't do jobs that are below that amount. I urge all people to keep reviewing and giving them 1 star. There are good contractors out there that will do great work. Don't be fooled by the dog and pony showroom or sales people. Read the reviews. This company is no good and if you hire them you have been warned. Mike sleep well knowing how you screw people over. Don't reply and lie. You had no interest in giving us an estimate. You shot a number and laughed and didn't want to be bothered. The sad part is you don't know who you are talking to on the other end of the phone. 40k to 100k was not the issue, the issue was you didn't want to come and give an estimate. So we didn't mis understand so don't insult us and try to cover your behind. Yes are bathroom turned out beautiful and I'll send you pictures and show you what we did and what we spent. This company!! In 2009 we decided instead of moving, we would just make a few improvements to the parts of our house that were somewhat lacking. To wit, we added space in our family room and a sun room and a 3rd bay in our garage. We diligently got 3 or 4 estimates for the work. RHI was by far the best choice. Their architect drew up a plan that included EVERTHING on our wish list for the expanded family room/sunroom. They weren't the least expensive, but they weren't the most expensive either. The work commenced and was completed actually ahead of schedule. 13 years later we have not had ANY problems with the added construction. We love it and are so thankful for this wonderful company and their high quality craftsmanship.I give them 5+ stars! read more

Wanted to provide an update. While Reliable stood by their work for a while on our house -promptly fixing minor issues that came up, we have had a consistent problem that they eventually gave up on - even when I was willing to pay to get it fixed properly. The gutter on the back of our house has a persistent leak - the gutter was original to the house but was cut during the remodel. It leaks where it was cut. They sent someone out multiple times to fix it, but it would always start leaking again. Eventually, they said they just weren't going to fix it. I asked if I could pay to have it done properly (replace the gutter), and they never responded to me. Very disappointing. read more

We have had Reliable complete two projects for us now and we could not have been more pleased with both. What we liked about Reliable was just that... they were truly Reliable! Moreover, their professionalism, helpful service and workmanship was nothing short of terrific! Reliable managed the project from beginning to end. After reviewing our ideas, they presented a blueprint of the project on a big screen which helped us visualize the outcome. Once agreed, Mike and Jeff jumped in to fine tune the details for every trade down to the placement of the switch plates. Incredible! Then we were assigned different people for the various disciplines. I worked with Sharon who helped me choose the best options for the layout of each bathroom from the tile...to the shower doors...to the tub and hardware. She was talented, patient, listened and had a solid grasp on what would be the best option. Sharon was an incredible resource!!! Once they started the actual work, Kurt managed the project. He was personable, made sure each trade was on time, followed the blueprints and cleaned up after themselves. He also jumped in to help when needed. Nice guy! Kurt, Sharon and Beth went above and beyond when it came to customer service!!!! When finished, we were so pleased. Both bathrooms were beautiful and looked like they would be showcased in a "House Beautiful" magazine. The workmanship was impeccable! Last year, I decided to renovate the first level of my house. I wanted to tear down a wall between my living, kitchen, and dining room areas and create an open space. The best parts about working with Reliable included working with Sharon, Reliable's in-house designer. She went above and beyond in answering all of my questions, and was in tune with the style I wanted, and the resources and questions to make it happen. Leo, the superintendent, was wonderful and attentive... things got done quickly and correctly. The turn-around time of the project was long (I first met with Reliable in April 2019 and the project finished in May 2020)... two of those months were due my request to delay finishing due to COVID. And within those months, there were redesigns on my part, which I also know added to the timeline. During the project, Leo kept the area clean and tidy, both inside and outside the home. We just completed our kitchen remodeling with Reliable Home Improvement in Naperville, IL. It was a project we had been considering for years. After a recommendation from a neighbor, and visiting the showroom in Naperville, we met the staff, and felt confident with choosing Reliable for our kitchen remodel. After signing the contract, we scheduled a meeting with our designer, Sharon. She worked with us throughout the process of choosing cabinet style, whether we wanted painted or stained cabinets, what type of handles, interior of cabinets and what type of backsplash. We also chose hardwood flooring. Reliable handled all the scheduling of the remodel, from the architectural drawings and permits, to the contractors and all the inspections that would be required by the village. The office staff at Reliable always kept us updated on contractor schedules, and what was happening next. When the project began, Leo, our job site coordinator was onsite overseeing each contractor that worked in our home. We had daily communications and a written log to document any questions or concerns we may have had during the process. Everyone who worked in our home was very courteous and professional. The workmanship was excellent. From the demo to the installation of the backsplash, the contractors worked hard and cleaned up prior to leaving for the day. The project included removing a wall and the soffits, moving plumbing and venting, replacing the ceiling, new cabinets and hardwood floors. Updates to the lighting in the new kitchen area were placed perfectly. All new items were on hand prior to the start of the project so that there would be no delays. Any changes we made as the project progressed were completed without any problems. The forty-day project was completed with only a small delay in the final stages due to the Covid 19 concerns. The project turned out even better than we imagined. Seeing our selections all come together in a finished project was very satisfying; we are extremely happy with the results. read more

We were very excited to work with Reliable on a kitchen remodel, but, unfortunately, our project stalled before it ever got started. We were planning on remodeling next Spring but wanted to start designing and planning with Reliable now. I explained our timeline when I made the appointment for the in-home consultation and I was told that was fine. They came to our home and we talked about remodel ideas for about 45 minutes. They had really interesting and innovative ideas and solutions. Before we finished discussing ideas, they started asking about our budget and timeline. We restated our timeline. At that point, instead of providing anymore suggestions or scheduling a follow up appointment in their showroom to review a quote-which is the next step according the process they outline on their website-they told us the next step would be talking to someone who could advise us on financing options. According to their operations department, they have customers calling and looking to start their projects in the near future. Therefore, they really aren't equipped with the resources to provide consultations and quotes to people who aren't ready to start their projects. While I respect the need to manage resources, this information should be on the website and this guidance should be shared during appointment setting to avoid wasting anyone's time or setting unrealistic expectations. Furthermore, it seems premature to discuss financing options before we've seen a quote. When we said this, they started talking about the fact that pricing couldn't be guaranteed and that prices might go up, trying to persuade us to move up our project start date. We assured them that we did not expect them to guarantee pricing, but the entire consultation seemed to end when they realized that we weren't ready to start our project right away. We have since decided to consider other companies who understand and can accept our project start date and who listen to us instead of dismissing us. This is unfortunate because Reliable really did have some wonderful ideas, but they have a lot to learn about setting and managing customer and sales expectations during the consultation process so that everyone involved understands the timeline and respects the timeline instead of pressuring customers or insulting them. read more

I cannot say enough good things about reliable. Before during and after the work all superb. We got our master bath completely remodeled. Everyone at reliable from the staff in the office to our superintendent Mike C Ducato to all the craftsman were all so professional. I am a very critical and picky person and when I say I am impressed, that's huge. I don't give that compliment to anybody. They are very organized and stuck to the schedule almost to the day! Before they start they give u a schedule detailing exactly who will be doing what and when. I loved that. Helped my family and I big time. And we got the work done during the Covid and they went above and beyond to take precautions and be safe. And usually these companies are known for being ridiculously late on finishing the job but reliable finished right on time. They have that family run business feel. So they have a lot of more flexibility. And they went above and beyond the scope of the job and fixed stuff for me thet was outside of the scope of the work. Their main priority was my family and my happiness and satisfaction. Also a good sign about whether a company stands by their work is their post work service. It's only been a couple of months but we just had a couple of small issues and mike the superintendent came out the same day and Beth called to schedule it to be fixed. They even have a 6 month and 12 month service request forms where they come out and fix anything related to the job. The 12 month gives things time to settle and go through all the seasons. And even after that the warranty covers labor and material. I couldn't be more happy with them and would recommend them 100%. read more

2 years ago my wife and I decided to add an addition to our house, building over the garage. I vetted 3 companies for this project based on both price, design, and ability deliver ontime and on budget. Most estimate were considerably larger than we expected for the amount of space we were adding. Reliable was the only one that helped make some suggestions to simplify the project, which reduce3d the cost into our budget. They helped us every step of the way and completed the project within a few days of the original target - which in the construction world is almost never heard of. 2 years later, we had a window get a crack in it. Buyer beware. Unfulfilled promises on start date/deadlines. Uses all subcontractors so no accountability and they all argue with each other on whose fault it is when they screw up the job. Expect to pay more even though promised certain upgraded materials. General contractor was seldom on the huge job. High end pricing for medium of the road materials. If I wrote all the problems with the job from tile to plumbing...it would be book. To say it was a disaster is a huge understatement...and I've done many remodeling jobs. read more

I used Reliable for a major master bath remodel. We signed an agreement in February 2014. They did not start until November 2014. We were told that it would be a six week project and now 7 months later it is still not completed. They assigned a superintendent to the project who they knew was leaving the company two weeks later and never told us. Then they continued to do subpar work. We went with the company because we needed help with heating and cooling. Then they failed to even provide us with adequate heating and cooling since once the job was started they told us that the HVAC could not support another line. We would not have even started the project if they told us that. Then the rough carpenter failed to follow the plans which delayed the project a few weeks. The rough carpenter also built a wall crooked and they blamed us when we complained. The plans were drawn to add a walk in closet but only once I spoke with a closet designer did they indicate that I could not have even walked into the closet the way it was drawn. I regularly had to act as the superintendent on the project because workmanship was so poor. Reliable added heated floors that did not work as the electrician did not even know what voltage the floors were (you would think they would look). They installed the wrong shower surround even though I have it in writing that they were to install a higher shower doors. We have a punch list that they will not complete. We paid this firm more than a Mercedes and they are not reputable to stand behind their promises. Beware!!! read more

It was a 5 month disaster--yes, 5 months for them to remodel two bathrooms. Days would go by and no showed up to work. Complaints fell on deaf hears--lots of promises, no action. It's been 3 years since Reliable Home Improvement added a second floor bedroom and walkway to our home...took me a while to write this review, but also confirms to date, no issues. They designed a second floor bedroom without creating a closed in feeling on the first floor. Tony took time to discuss the 3d drawings really let us know what to expect. It was reassuring that a Architect was involved and it showed in the details. Mike was great as the project manager. We were worried about Safety in the construction area, but it was soon clear that they would do things right and that would not be an issue. In fact, they took the time to walk my 3 year old around the project to explain what they were doing and satisfy his curiosity. They also fixed some siding in another area of the house and that's been great as well. I would definitely trust them with our building projects in the future. read more

Reliable is anything but reliable. We scheduled an appointment with them and they insisted both my wife and I be there for the consultation, but they only schedule appointments until 6:30pm (which is hard to make if you have a long commute after work). We set the appointment, received both a call and mailed letter confirming the appointment. On the day of the appointment, they did not show up or call. If this is how they treat prospective customers, I can't imagine how they would treat us once we signed a contract. There are plenty of other contractors out there - steer clear of these jokers. read more

Disappointed in Unreliable builders. The slick sales guy made promises that they didn't keep. I needed a shower put in the first floor. And I needed it done quickly. They said they could do it. From date of contract to completion it was SIX months. That's not quick. They were recommended to me because they knew what to do. Well, yeah, running costs over contract price by 20%, so they knew what to do! However, they took out the heat/light/exhaust fixture and only replaced it with an exhaust fan. Took off the built-in toilet paper holder and didn't replace, same with the towel bar. The workmen were sloppy. They used my brooms and shovel! And didn't have the courtesy to ask or even clean them. They worked in the garage and all the food items on the shelves were covered in sawdust. They said workmen would come the next day...and they never showed, because the head guy forgot to call them. The electricians dumped solder in my kitchen sink and when I called an out side plumber to fix the garbage disposal they found the solder. The "custom" molding was delivered in two different colors...light and dark. The jam under the door from the garage was not shimmed and wind would blow the door open. They blew a fuse and had to manually close the garage door...but never told me and I couldn't get into the house. The replacement doors were of a poor quality compared to what they replaced. I was promised 110% completion the Friday after their deadline...didn't mean anything as it was another two weeks till they finished. I would never use them again. Not enough supervision. Their subcontractors were not great and their touted communication book was a joke. Their subs never looked at it and never seemed to know what they were doing. Be very careful if you work with them and watch them like a hawk. read more

"Reliable" Home Improvement is anything but. Run, don't walk, to an alternative contractor. I had an addition added to my home. As someone else said in his review, the slick salesman made many representations on which the company never delivered. They do get points, however, for consistency -- consistently bad. The project was sub-standard right from the get-go through to completion. Their architect's design was pathetic. (That should have been my first clue but, of course, I was already bound by the contract.) Fortunately, my brother, not a professional architect or designer, sketched a much more attractive plan for implementation. The project manager's mantra through the whole process was "I pride myself on bringing my jobs in under budget." Of course, the finished project demonstrated that! The family's promises to resolve my issues were EMPTY. The family member who was supposed to meet with me to discuss the issues never showed up. And Daddy Ducato's position on the matter was tough (you fill in the blank.) All in all a family to avoid. read more
