Don't be scared by the low reviews or unfortunate business name!! This place is under new management and you aren't actually getting a busted/"wrecked" car. I have driven these cars to meet with clients and do some factory tours and no one thought it was any different than a traditional rental car. I honestly love Rent A Wreck, and Carlos the manager is the best. He is super helpful and really tries to go above and beyond to make his customers happy. I started using them when I was fresh out of college and wanted a cheap rental car. Years later, I still use them especially for longer rentals because it is significantly cheaper than Enterprise, Hertz, etc. When you rent at a traditional car rental company, you get brand new cars with super low miles. This company rents vehicles that might be a couple years old, but still have fairly low miles. They aren't trashed, messed up, or in bad condition. But it might be a 2018 car with 30-40k miles on it or a small scrape on a bumper or something, and for most people that is perfectly fine, especially considering the price. The cars are cleaned and all the paperwork is done ahead of time so you can just show up and pick up the car without any hassle. It's a great value for the price and Carlos always takes good care of his customers. I highly recommend giving them a shot - I'm super happy with my experience over the past several years. read more

Under no circumstances should you rent a car here. I waited almost two hours to get the car I reserved, having to make multiple phone calls to the office. The office is not where the cars are -- they put their cars in a parking lot, and YOU will pay a parking lot fee for every day you're renting the car, even though the car is not in the parking lot during your rental. Your final bill will be way, way more than the original quote, as they load it up with erroneous, unethical charges. My recent rental through Expedia with Rent-A-Wreck at Orlando International Airport (MCO) was one of the worst travel experiences I've had in over 50 years of renting cars. Here's why this listing is completely false and misleading: Hidden "Insurance Administration Fee": Because I brought my own insurance (as I've done with every rental company for decades), I was hit with a $19.95 per day "insurance administration fee." There is no "administration" being done -- it's just a junk fee designed to extract more money. Even worse, this charge was not clearly disclosed. It was buried four pages deep in the fine print of their "insurance policy" section, nowhere visible on the main Expedia listing. I had to spend an hour on the phone with multiple customer service agents to get my car that was reserved days ago. I was asked for documents that don't exist, and to upload them to a website that doesn't allow uploads. The shuttle wouldn't pick me up without a claim number, the first customer service person I talked to sent me a text with the claim number, except there was no claim number. In the end I had to email a copy of my electric bill (wtf) to the personal email of a very helpful customer service rep (the third person I talked to) and got my car. Made me very late. read more

I was really hesitant to rent a car from here because of the reviews, but decided to take a chance based on recent reviews. I am really glad I did! The price was right and the car rental process was seamless and easy. I rented the car online. Made a mistake when typing in my number to the online application. I was actually able to find the locations phone number easily (something that is nigh impossible with regular car rental companies), called them and within a few minutes (!) got a real live, nice, customer-service oriented person on the phone, who easily fixed my phone number. I was so surprised at this whole experience I almost didn't know what to do with myself. The company emailed me the paperwork to fill out as promised, I filled it out online. Then, they emailed me the claim number as promised. I called when I arrived at the airport, got in the shuttle, which took me to ABC parking. I went in expecting a long line and a hard sell like at a normal car rental place, but I was in and out in 3 minutes. I am not exaggerating. There were other people ahead of me, too. And in 90 degree heat with two little kids in tow. All they did was hand me the key and the claim number, then I went out and got into the car. The car was a 2018 Honda Hrv. It wasn't beautiful but it ran great. One seatbelt in the back didn't work, I could have gone back to switch the car out, but I had two working seatbelts for my kids and didn't want to deal with switching it out. Returning the car was just as easy and the customer service was great then, too. The shuttle left right away. I am never renting from anywhere else again at EWR. Esp if you have little kids and don't want to deal with taking the air train to the car rental place, dealing with the bs and waiting in the loooong line, come here! read more

I booked a rental with them, unfortunately there was a clause in the contract that I didn't agree with and ended up not going through with the rental. One of the employees explained me later that it wasn't necessary to do that clause, but I had already booked with a different company. They put my money back on my card promptly and for that I'm giving them the 5 stars. I also want to add that even if I never used their services, I already knew what I was getting into, the name itself explains it all: RENT-A-WRECK. Turn signals don't work, trunk doesn't open (had to out bags in from the back seat), heat doesn't work but on highest fan speed, car has 224K miles, broken interior lights, no sunshades, and the topper of all was the smell. I was flying into Newark and needed a car to take me to a wedding in New Jersey. I was a little hesitant because of (1) the name and (2) some of the reviews, but ultimately took the chance because the cars were almost $100 cheaper than other options. I had a great experience. The contract process seemed a little sketchy at first, but it really makes everything easier to present your information and sign the contract ahead of time. My car was a nice, spacious, clean Santa Fe. I had no problems getting to and from the lot with the shuttle and overall it was a great experience. My only complaint is that the car had about 1/4 tank of gas when I picked it up. Because of this I didn't return the car with a full tank of gas but did leave it with more than I started with. read more

But when I got to the airport, they never sent me a confirm number for the shuttle which they said they would give no later than 2 hours prior to my pick up time. I couldn't leave a message because it said the voicemail is full. 15 min later I get an email from them saying they don't have a car available. WHAT SCUMBAGS!!! Drove 20 mins into Jersey before realizing it because they had no staff on site to vet their cars, (which I got with a 1/8th tank of gas, by the way. Apparently, they have some other company as their go-between, and so they--brace yourself--had me drive an illegal vehicle back to the airport. Had I been pulled over, I shudder to think what would happen. A total nightmare due to a lack of professionalism. But don't worry: they made it up to me by comping $8.78. I was shocked. I was very reluctant to try Rent-a-Wreck given the negative reviews but I'm so glad I did. I have used Rent-a-Wreck 5 times now and waited to write a review to make sure my first positive experience wasn't an anomaly; it wasn't. I've had great experiences all five times. I have family in the New Jersey/New York area and I'm so glad I found Rent-a-Wreck and will continue to use them in the future. It's really important to know from the beginning what Rent-a-Wreck is and is not. This is not a luxury car rental company. If you want flexibility to change your rental at the last minute or cancel without paying or you want a company that will be on call 24-7 to help you if you get stuck, this is not the company for you. What Rent-a-Wreck is is an incredibly easy and cheap option for renting a car in a generally very expensive area. First, you do all your paperwork in advance and email it to Rent-a-Wreck. This may seem annoying but it will save you tons of time when you arrive and I ended up preferring it. Rent-a-Wreck will send you an email the day before with your claim number. When you land at the airport, you call the number of the parking lot where Rent-a-Wreck stores their cars (ABC Parking) and give them this claim number. ABC will come to your terminal and pick you up. They are incredibly fast - from the time I have called them to the time I get into their van, I've had to wait at most ten minutes and it's usually faster. It's about a ten minute ride or less to their parking lot. Once at the parking lot, your car is waiting and they give you the key and you're off. That's it. Super simple, easy, and fast. When you return the car to the lot, ABC Parking gives you another claim number and takes you to your terminal. You email Rent-a-Wreck with this claim number and tell them the mileage on the car and how much gas is left in the car. Overall, the cars I've gotten from Rent-a-Wreck have been perfectly adequate, functional, and with low mileage. I've never had any problems with the cars. Of the five cars I've rented, one had a slight smell of smoke and one of them the gas tank wasn't all the way full when I got in the car (it was between half full and 3/4 full). The price for the rentals has been excellent. Even compared to Costco rental cars, these prices are generally about half of what you can find elsewhere. A few other things to note: there is no way to get an EZ Pass from Rent-a-Wreck. This means that in New Jersey, when you can go through the toll and pay in cash, you MUST do this. You should come prepared with quarters (tolls range from 75 cents to $1.50 on the Garden State). If you don't pay tolls in cash, you'll get charged the violation fine plus a fine from Rent-a-Wreck. In places where you cannot pay the toll in cash (it's toll by plate), you can just go through and you'll only get billed for the toll cost. I had one problem with this during one of my rental experiences where two tolls that I went through were toll by plate but Rent-a-Wreck charged me for two toll violations. I reached out to them over email and they double checked and credited me back the violations. They were professional and easy to work with when this happened. If you happen to have an EZ Pass, you can use it in the rental car. Rent-a-Wreck warns you that you can't, but I think that's only to cover them in case it doesn't work. I've used a spare EZ Pass that I have on my last two trips and it's worked fine. I have made sure to add the rental car to my EZ Pass account. I also think it's really important to make sure that if you ever got stuck with a Rent-a-Wreck car in non-business hours, you'd be able to take care of things until the next day. You need to have car insurance (or get it through Rent-a-Wreck) to rent. I also have AAA in case I get stuck on the road. Unlike a more mainstream rental company, in the non-business hours, you may not be able to reach Rent-a-Wreck until the next business day and you need to make sure you're prepared in case you get into an accident or something happens to the car. This has never happened to me in Rent-a-Wreck but I think it's important to be prepared and have a backup. Overall, given the cost and quality of the cars and the ease of the experience, I love Rent-a-Wreck and will continue to use them. However, it's not for everyone. Make sure that you understand what you are and are not getting through Rent-a-Wreck and you're okay with this. It's very important that you consider whether (1) you're okay with not being able to change your plans at the last minute, (2) you are okay with not being able to reach someone at Rent-a-Wreck in non-business hours, and (3) you understand and are able to figure out the complexities with not having an EZ Pass and paying any toll you can pay in cash with cash. I gave 4 stars instead of 5 because I do think Rent-a-Wreck should have an emergency number to call during non-business hours and wish they had an EZ Pass option. read more

WILL NEVER USE AGAIN. And you shouldn't either. Thought I would save a few bucks by using a car that was not brand new, and never considered they would rent me a car that was barely operational. I didn't find the paperwork process in advance to be an issue, and the people weren't that bad, but this piece of poop that I picked up at the Trenton airport had me in complete shock. It was a very old, and battered maroon Hyndai elantra or something...tough to see through the scratches and dents. It was embarrassing, the condition of this WRECK would not pass inspection and was a hazard to myself and others to drive. I tried to swap out "but we don't have any available". The car made a terrible noise in the front axle (thought the wheel was falling off). It also rattled when going over a bump, something was loose underneath and jiggling around. The tire pressure light was on the entire time, although the tires were not low? The radio did not work - never expected that one - quite a miserable experience. The windshield had a 24 inch crack through the entire passenger side - they told me this was OK and wouldn't be a problem. The passenger side door was badly dented, with the mirror taped on and visable dry wall screws holding the panel onto the door! Starting a new paragraph because the list just goes on: car smelled bad, was terribly dirty, and had stains on each and every seat cushion...unable to take clients, whom I was visiting, in the vehicle. Scratches around the entire car, and the trunk was cracked down the middle where you put the key in. The a/c worked (one of the few things that did) but was blowing out moldy air...something that should have been cleaned out 100k miles prior. I probably could have taken a sledge hammer to this piece of junk and the company would not have known the difference. I deleted all my photos because it was embarrassing to think that I actually rented this turd pile, and having them on my phone reminded me of the idiot I was who rented it. I too got a $150 charge for tolls that I did pay on the turnpike, and am in the process of dealing with that...the representative in Ewing told me it was OK to use a friend's EZ pass but apparently this backfired - to the tune of $200+. In the end this will cost me much more than Avis or any other vendor in the area...and with a car that shouldn't be allowed to be rented. So then I asked for the address. Again she sounded very annoyed and told me "we don't give that out until after the contract is signed." I explained that I just want to confirm the location. I was very displeased with my car rental experience through Rent-A-Wreck. Upon arriving to Newark Airport, I called ABC Parking to arrange for shuttle pick-up and was given inaccurate directions to locate the shuttle pick-up. This lead me to circling the airport numerous times trying to locate the pick-up location. I had called ABC Parking to see if they could clarify directions and the woman seemed very bothered and like she didn't know what to tell me. After finally arriving to ABC Parking, the attendant pulled my vehicle up. I was shocked to see a Ford Mustang when I had requested an economy car. Having formerly owned a Mustang, I know that is far from being an economy car and is not good in gas mileage. The vehicle's back tire was also flat. ABC Parking was kind and filled the vehicle's tire up with air. I was reluctant to accept this vehicle, but with it being the holidays I knew I was most likely out of options. Driving the vehicle was a nightmare. The window defroster was broken which resulted in a very cold driving experience. The vehicle was in overall very poor condition with buttons being broken, the inside wreaking of smoke, and very shaky wheel suspension. The attendant at ABC Parking also made a comment saying, "They rent these cars to people and don't even check the condition. Horrible." I had called the next day to request a different vehicle due to true fear of the vehicle breaking down, however the gentleman told me that there were no other rentals available. I was very irritated with this outcome due to the fact that I had my family in this vehicle and felt like I was putting their life, as well as my life in jeopardy. This whole ordeal made my Thanksgiving this year not very fun. I am very disappointed with my Rent-A-Wreck experience and will not be doing business with them in the future. Even though I made reservation already.). I made a car reservation with this company for my personal trip starting on Aug 19, 2016. The car which was provided to me was actually a 'WRECK' contrary to what is advertised by the merchant online that its cars are well maintained (e.g. Rent-A-Wreck vehicles may have been personally owned, or they could have been owned by another rental car chain company.) The car that was given was a 'total' disaster; the seats were torn, the steering was wearing out, there was patch work all over the place in the body of the car, the headlights were falling out, there were hay/straws hanging out of the boot; although I could not dare to open and check as there was so much of foul smell in the car that no-one can even stand next to it forget about driving it. The doors were almost falling apart and were somehow fixed to the body of the car. The car even had the sticker of 'REJECTED during Motor Vehicle Inspection' on the windscreen, I don't think anyone would dare to risk their lives by using that car. I made multiple attempts to reach out to the company while standing in ABC Parking, Newark (where I was asked to pick up the car) but could not reach them. After getting no response from the merchant, I had to make on-the-spot reservation with another company at Newark airport by paying much higher amount that I would have paid them by making advance purchase. I even could not reach this company over next few days as well. All my calls went to voicemail and they did not reply back to my mails. When I requested merchant for the complete refund as the services were not provided as expected and car they provided was not at all used. I was told they will look into it and refund my amount. No one has reached out to me so far. I would sincerely request everyone NOT to do any business with this company. Biggest POS ever! Massive dents all over the outside and a huge 2ft crack across the windshield. The inside was disgusting, too. The passenger side door handle was like melted off so when I went to close the door, I got some sticky goo all over my hand. When pressing the ignition start button, it took several tries to get the car to start and the entire dashboard moved in at the same time. The car made a crazy loud cranking sound when making a right turn and had no suspension and questionable power steering. I'm guessing this car came from a salvage yard and is not even legal to drive. Every warning light was lit on the dashboard so we were worried the car would break down. The state of NJ requires a vehicle inspection sticker; ours had none. We called to return the car so we could get a safer one but were told there are no refunds for pick ups from EWR airport. Scammers. read more

We tried to look for a decent car and thought to ourselves "OMG, we are renting a WRECK!" Our car came out to be literally a WRECK, with screws holding the bumpers up in place, over 150,000 miles, the steering wheel was wore out, the seats were nasty, the interior odor was like a nursing home, and the list goes on. This company is awful for what they charge - it's only $10/day more to go to Hertz or Enterprise, just do that. They advertise like you're getting a relatively new rental -- the cars they rent are minimum 10 years old, drive like crap, and have potentially dangerous damage to them. My car had a crack huge in the windshield, a bad transmission, no airbags, and the windshield wipers didn't work. Not to mention the check engine light was stuck on and the car was filthy. read more

Honestly can't believe this place is in business. The car they gave me was a complete train wreck and looked like it hadn't been cleaned in 5 years. I asked for another car and they gave me one that wouldn't even start, so I had to take it. Covered in dents, rust, with a literally screwed on bumper, this 160K mile gem had the engine light on, airbag light on, no radio and cigarette burns, ashes, soda spills and (likely) blood on the seats. The jammed doors had to be manually unlocked and the crank on the window handle had no knob. I had to sit on a towel because the seat was so disgustingly filthy. Like a few other people here, I was skeptical when renting from here but my flight was canceled coming home from overseas and I had to book a last minute rental and the price was right compared to the other places online. The booking process seems strange and maybe shady... you have to E-sign through DocuSign all of the rental agreement paperwork and send photos of your drivers license, etc... but honestly, looking back at the experience from start to finish, it was the easiest, most streamlined car rental experience I've ever had, period. The paperwork is already completed and your car assigned to you before you get to the airport, there was a shuttle that picked me up promptly once I called for it at baggage claim, and the car I received was super nice, very clean and in great shape. The portable building at the car lot was a little intimidating since it looked a bit run down, but everyone I dealt with was incredibly nice, very accommodating, and I was out of there in less than half the time compared to the last 5 times I've rented a car at the more name-brand places. I even had an issue with the keys getting locked in the car while it was running the morning I was set to fly home, and the customer service guy was so amazing and reassuring, and even though I was in the middle of nowhere NJ they had a guy out to unlock the car within 30 minutes, and I still made my flight no problem. I don't know if its the new ownership or what that has improved things so much, but I was more than impressed and I would absolutely rent from them again. :) read more

The van was missing several parts. It smelled like vomit. The tires needed a ton of air. The air conditioning didnt work. There were no other vehicles to choose from. The place doesn't even have its own establishment, it rents a car space from a privately owned parking lot when the van is in between renters. I didn't feel safe driving it so I walked across the street to Avis to rent a great car for less than $17 more per day. It was a hilarious start to an epic bachelor party weekend though. read more

NEVER AGAIN!!!! This was the most insane process I have ever endured renting a car. I waited a decent 20min for the "shuttle" to get me. Which was a cargo van that wreaked of body odor and ethnic food. The location shouldn't even be considered Newark Airport as it took a good 12-15min to get there. The location itself was a junkyard. Got out of the van with 0 idea how to navigate to my car. I finally walked in a small office where I was told to pay an addition $15 for parking? and that I would be reimbursed. RIDICULOUS! OK, now the car. The car I was given was barely drivable. I get its Rent A Wreck, but this thing was on its last leg. Half of the back bumper missing, dents, holes, no grill. Rust everywhere. The interior was 85% stripped, with tears in the seats and 0 trim. It was pretty much a shell. This car appeared to have been TOTALED from an accident. DEFINITELY NOT WORTH $40. This was a $5 car! I immediately requested a different car, which was given to me 30min later. This car wasn't better, barely sufficed. I returned 3hrs later and went to enterprise. What a WRECK!! Worst customer service ever! Made a reservation online a week before my trip. When I called to find out where to get a shuttle, they didn't answer my question, were rude. Claiming I never filled out paperwork so they had no car available. I've never been treated so poorly. Didn't even over a solution or explanation other than no paperwork. I had my confirmation number, but to no use. NEVER RENT from them! read more
