They required me to photocopy my license and credit card information and send it electronically. I have never had to do that for a rental car, let alone renting a used junker. Don't kid yourself - you're not getting a better deal. What with the extra charges (yes, the "parking fee" of $23 is apparently a thing) and hassle you have to go through to pick up the car (they don't have an office - just a shuttle service to the parking lot), you're better off spending a bit more for a reputable company. Horrible experience so far, we called to get the shuttle and the woman working on 10/19/18 at 8:00 am yelled at me and when we picked up the car I asked her for her name and she told me to go f...k myself. We got in the car and it smelled like cigarettes and had less than half a tank of gas. Horrible experience. Very complicated procedure pick up the car, sign the contracts, catch a shuttle, etc. There are no humans to deal with. The pick up location is in a big trucking lot about five minutes from the airport (none of this was communicated until after I made my reservation). My car was truly a WRECK. I reserved a compact car and ended up with an old, bright yellow Mitsubishi Eclipse with an obscenely large spoiler on the back. The passenger side rear view mirror was attached with masking tape. The interior dome light did not work. The tire pressure alert light was on. The air conditioning did not work. The gas tank was a sliver above empty. I don't think the car would've passed inspection. Don't do it!! I used this service when I flew to Newark this past weekend. They work with a local parking company, ABC airport parking. ABC was great. They picked me up very quickly and gave me the keys quickly as well. However the car was terrible! It was very old and scratched up. The passenger side seat belt didn't work. The headlights didn't fully work. I did not feel safe driving that car. I dropped off my car at the end of the trip and had to call their number to let them know I dropped it off. No one picked up. I was going to leave a message but a lady picked up and yelled at me for calling since it wasn't an emergency. She told me I need to leave a voicemail. I asked how was I supposed to leave a voicemail if she picked up, so she got mad and hung up on me. Its just very confusing. They make you call a company, have a claim number and repeat it to them with all this information. If you don't follow any of the (many) steps they will charge you extra. Just pay the extra 10-20-30 dollars and use a legitimate rental company. PS: ABC Airport Parking is very difficult to find. Call them for directions because the GPS will take you elsewhere. PPS: They make you photocopy your license and credit card and email it to them. Pretty shady. read more

So I found these guys on one of the travel sites advertising bargain deals. I wasn't too turned off by the name, as it's not like I was trying to impress anyone on this business trip. I was skeptical, however, so I called the number on the website. Sure enough, someone answered, was kind, courteous and assured me that they offered a 24 hour shuttle to their lot. This was reassuring enough, so I made my reservation. I received an email the next day, informing me that the reservation wouldn't be complete until I filled out some forms that they would email to me some other time. The forms never came and honestly, I didn't think about it. All I remembered was that I was promised a ride. When I made it to the airport, there was no shuttle. I called the numbers listed on the website and the number on my confirmation, but both seemed to go straight to someone's personal voice mail. Keep in mind that this was an evening flight and most other car rental companies were starting to close. On top of that, my cell phone was down to four percent and I did not want to risk getting stranded in an unfamiliar city. I made the decision to take a cab to my hotel and deal with a new car company later. At this point, no one has called to find out what happened nor have a been billed for anything. I'm glad that I haven't been billed, however it's curious how these guys obviously have no idea what is going on. I would definitely not recommend this company for anything what so ever. read more

I've seen a lot of negative reviews, so I thought I'd provide another perspective: I expected an older car (which it was) and with a scrape or two (dent in the front bumper and cracked grill) but it was (surprisingly) a Mercedes C Class. And everything on it worked. It had not been cleaned inside or out (for which they reimbursed us to have it done) but it performed well on our trip around the tri-state area. We incurred no additional charges on their basic rate and they promptly credited back our security deposit when we returned the car. They have no desk at the airport, but it was easy to find them in a nearby airport parking facility. The van picked us up quickly after our call and took us back equally quickly when we dropped off the car at the end of our trip. read more

Let me break it down in two ratings. First, I had no problems at all with the company itself. The reservation, electronic paperwork, deposits and refunds, ride to and from airport, experience at the parking lot all went flawlessly. I replied to their emails with questions and they replied promptly and with complete answers. I'd give this part of the experience 4 stars. My only issue is with the vehicle itself. Summary is that, like many other reviewers noted, the vehicle itself is a WRECK. I reserved a compact. Imagine my surprised when they handed me the keys and said it was the 4-door Mercedes with sunroof out front. Score! Then I walked out to it. Trunk wouldn't open via key fob or button inside the car (I guess that made it a compact - you used the back seat as the trunk). Engine alerts for overfull oil level (that's a think?), no windshield washer fluid (stopped at a gas station once to clean it), and one of the blinkers was broken. Annoying but no big deal... Missing trim in and outside, broken center console, driver power mirror didn't work (luckily window could open so I could adjust it manually). All of that I could deal with, though grudgingly, since I was paying a great rate on the rental. However as I drove off the front end made all sorts of creaking and groaning whenever I made a turn. I'm doubtful the front end has ever been properly serviced (98,000 miles on the car). I'd give the car 1 star (or less) Summary - I don't get the feeling they actually do any preventive maintenance on these cars. If you're one who tends to randomly destroy your rental car, then this might be the company to rent from as I doubt they'd notice if you slashed a seat, ripped off a door handle (like mine had), or some other vandalism. If you want a ride that would pass a safety inspection and not keep you hoping it survives a 3-day rental without a break down, you might look elsewhere. Thus my overall rating - 2 stars. read more

I returned with in 2 hrs and cancelled my trip. True to their name, Rent-A-Wreck really does rent wrecks. I never encountered the company directly. ABC parking picked me up from the airport and took me to their extremely sketchy location where the car was parked. ABC parking then charged me 15 dollars for having the car parked there, which is supposedly refundable by Rent-A-Wreck. I was given a Mazda 3 with large gashes on the body. The key fob did not work. The tire pressure light was on. The gas tank was almost empty, so I filled up the tank. The car was filthy, both inside and outside. The interior smelled overwhelmingly like cigarette smoke. After the car had been parked for a few hours, the battery was completely dead. I was able to trade that car for a Hyundai Elantra. They did not offer to reimburse me for the gas I put in the first car. The second car still smelled of cigarette smoke, but not as strongly as the original car. It had about half a tank of gas in it. It was also very dirty and had body damage. It made some bad noises and felt very bouncy, is if something were loose. Both cars had over 150,000 miles on them. I would not recommend renting from this company if you can avoid it. It's well worth the extra money to rent from a reputable company. read more

Unfortunately my flight was cancelled due to severe weather that was approaching that evening. When I called to cancel my rental I was told that I was going to be charged the full amount anyway! The check engine light was on and it would beep when we accelerated and sometimes the engine made a funny noise during acceleration. The passenger air bag was not functioning. We called rent-a-wreck and they said "it was fine to drive it with the check engine light, all our cars have them on". And the said the "cleaning person was sick yesterday and was unable to clean the car that is why it is so dirty". That is a complete lie as there were receipts in the car from several months back. DO NOT RENT!!! What a nightmare. We jumped through tons hoops to fill out the paperwork before we left for our trip. When we got to the airport we were picked up by a filthy van and dropped at the car lot. Nobody told us where to go or what to do. We found the office (trailer) and they said they would bring our car around. The car that was brought was truly a wreck. It had different color panels and multiple dents. The trunk didn't have a lock, so we couldn't open it. The inside of the car was dirty and smelled. There was a greasy rag in the backseat. When we sat down and turned the car on, multiple warning lights came on. The tires were low on air, the car needed an oil change, there was less than 1/4 tank of gas. We did not feel safe taking the car. When we went back to the office, we were told they couldn't help us. When we called Rent-A-Wreck, we were told this location was a franchise and they couldn't help us. I was initially skeptical of renting from here because of all of the negative reviews. However, I also read that they were under new ownership and that they upgraded their cars. I decided to give 'em a shot and it all turned out great! My friends who dropped me off to pick up the car were surprised when they saw the economy car I rented. New model Kia, clean from the outside and inside. Nice modern technology inside. Everything functioned properly. Radio and air cooler worked great. I got unlimited miles for a week and a few days. Since I added all insurance extras, I payed $600. I got the extras to be safe but turned out I didn't need to use any of 'em, thankfully. There were no mechanical problems and I didn't get any flats. I returned it nice and clean and the person driving the shuttle to the airport waited for me. I also got my $100 deposit back within a few days! :D read more

I gave this company 1 star because only good thing we were able to do with the car we rented was going to antlantic city and coming back to Newark safely. The car was a "wreck". 2005 model chevy, with a few dents on the body. Inside of the car was dirty as hell, there were some sticky mess along with chips around the gear stick. Also a couple of empty coffee cups. We started our journey and when we get to Philadelphia we parked it in the street. Then realized our right back door was not locking so we had to park in a parking lot. Also there was a screw instead of a lock on the left back door which came off eventually. Also half the way, chck engine light blinked and never gone away. The car made all sorts of noises while driving and I had to hold the steering wheel to the right slightly, since the car kept swaying to the left if I did not. Yeah, it did the job of getting us to atlantic city and bringing us back, but we were stressed out during the whole journey. I did not check out the reviews before renting, which was a mistake on my part, but I should at least be alarmed by the name of the company none the less. To sum it up, don't rent from them, it may look cheap at first glance (it was 30$ per day) but with the extra payments about insurance and stuff, it came out just as same about other companies. Needed a large van for my daughter's birthday party, to take a bunch of teens to a haunted corn maze. They wouldn't all fit in the minivan, but I didn't want to spend a ton of money. I also had a few requirements, like 24/7 returns, 15 passenger van availability, pickup somewhat close to home, etc. Rent a Wreck were the only ones who a. had a van, b. were within 20 miles of home, c. were open for returns late Saturday night or Sunday morning. I was a little skeptical, and their process is a little convoluted (multiple emails to sign contracts and get the pick-up code for the van), but in the end it worked our very well. I was able to get the contract signed, I got a reasonably clean and functional 15 passenger van, and I returned it with no problems whatsoever at 11:15 pm on Saturday night. The only reason for 4 stars is that the renting process is complicated and took a few emails. It could be easier but it worked out and the price was right. read more

They are extremely difficult to get in touch with and offer no refunds when they fail to follow their own procedures. I rented a car on Christmas day and wasn't given my confirmation number to pick up my car even though their instructions said I would receive my confirmation number the day before. I tried calling every office I could and tried calling numbers provided to me by ABC Parking, but their systems do not allow for voicemail and will hang up on you. Also, this place is not at the Newark Airport and you have to take a shuttle out to another town. I made a reservation one month in advance for a minivan in Newark, NJ. I received a phone call on July 4th to confirm the rental. I called back and left a message to confirm my reservation, which I already had in writing. Today, July 9th, I received a phone call from Kenya in the Newark, NJ office saying that my reservation was cancelled after failure to return documents emailed to me on July 4th. She gave me a number to call back if any problem. I called and was told that this was not the correct location for Kenya. They gave me the correct phone number. I reached Kenya and she told me that I never responded to their email on July 4th. I insisted that I never received it, not even in my Spam or Junk folder! She insisted that it WAS sent to me at 12:15pm on July 4th from Rent a Wreck. She said she was looking at it and wished she could send me a photo of her screen to prove that it was really sent. After several minutes and few options left to rent a van (sold out except for an older 2004 model), she said she would email me the documents again. I asked to remain on the phone while she did this. She said she was too busy to do it now. She called me back in 15 minutes and told me she was ready to send them to me. I asked to confirm the email address. She spelled it out incorrectly and when I told her so, she said well that was what I typed into the reservation. I told her I was looking at a print out of my reservation and it was not spelled the way she just recited. I spelled it back to her very slowly and she finally saw the mistake. It was in fact sent out spelled incorrectly the first time. There was no apology for this error, just a smug attitude. She was about to resend me the documents again when I told her I was very upset by the cancellation of my reservation, the loss of the vehicle I thought I would be getting, and no longer wished to rent from RENT A WRECK. Jose was initially helpful in getting my contract to me, but once I went to pick up the car and told him it was filthy inside to the extent that the seats were black and there was ash throughout the compartments, he was rude and crass. He lamented that I was renting from rent a wreck and that's normal wear and tear; that was definitely not the case. This was after he stated that the car cleaner was off yesterday. He offered a second and third car all of which were the same interiorly. Each time I called, he hung up on me. He stated that I was trying to be cheap because other companies were 30 dollars more a day and telling me prices of other places that were actually incorrect. I ended up renting from somewhere else and paid for a car I never took. Lesson learned; I will never rent from this company. Jose's disrespect was uncalled for and belittling.
