Went to eat there last night for the first time. We didn't have sticker shock because we previewed the menu on line. We started with the octopus appetizer, admittedly we consider ourselves to be octopus snobs eating it many times during our vacations to Mexico. The appetizer consisted of a circle of thinly shaven ?octopus shards surrounding what tasted like a spoonful of potato salad. The octopus had a weird consistency and was 'fishy' tasting. Having previewed the menu ahead of time to translate the names of the pasta I ordered the ravioli aka agnolotti. Our waitress said they 'ran out of that'. How does that happen at a restaurant that purports to be a finer, high-end Italian eatery. I then ordered the Bucatini aka tube-like spaghetti it arrived on a salad-sized plate and the amount of pasta did not even fill said plate. It was way too salty and had a pasty-like consistency. I only managed a couple of mouthfuls. I should have sent it back and ordered something else. My husband ordered the gnocchi and he said it was the second-best gnocchi he ever had and he had a substantial portion, unlike mine. My stepdaughter ordered the trout which she liked but it was such a thin piece of fish that she was left hungry. In my opinion the experience left me totally unfilled in more ways than one. read more

3.5 stars - what started out as a nice meal, quickly went downhill when a couple who sat beside us knew the chef. We were practically ignored the rest of the evening - forgetting our drinks and barely giving us a second of time and instead concentrated on this couple. It was my husband's birthday dinner and we live in the area so I was hoping to love this place, as we go out to eat often. The food was good, but I've been to Italy 3x and it certainly didn't compare to that quality. The cocktails were a nice surprise - enjoyed several different kinds of them. They messed up our bill. Forgot our drink. Zero apology for either. $150 bill (without tip), which wasn't too bad considering all we got, but unfortunately the poor service left a bad taste. read more

Ate dinner here last week with a group of girlfriends. We had a great time, delicious food and friendly waiter until my friend had an allergic reaction. She called days later to understand where the disconnect happened as she informed the restaurant of the allergy and was responded to with yelling and blame and accused of scamming the restaurant. I am not sure who would do something life threatening just to scam a restaurant. We won't be returning or recommending Alba. They were given a chance to show kindness and sympathy and shocked us all with no remorse. read more

The service was fantastic - our waitress was friendly and attentive. The apps were good, I enjoyed the fried olives and my cocktail was tasty. My dinner was so-so. I had the wings which were on the bar menu. The wings are small but you get quite a few (which is what you'd expect for $16). The description of Calabrian chili - honey and caper sauce with Gorgonzola ranch sounded delicious, but the truth is, they just tasted like hot wings and blue cheese. If I knew this I would've chosen something else from the menu. The wings are breaded and then fried. They were tasty although I prefer more crisp than they offered. If I went back I may try a sandwich - I saw one served and it looked excellent. read more

It was alright . Our server wasn't very good, he told me the beet salad is an entree size. Which it wasn't, possibly one beet cut up with a few pieces of greens. My husband had the pork chop special, pork chop was fine but they put cold sour cream on the potato and made it cold. Maybe they should put the sour cream in a side dish. Can't say I won't go back. This was some of the worst fine dining Italian food I've ever had. The bruschetta portion for the $9-18 price points was laughable, you can plate things nicely and not rip people off. That was a plus the plating was beautiful but someone forget to tell these fools people also want to EAT at a restaurant. 2 medium sized pieces of toast and some beans on top: $9. The cucumber eggplant salad was underwhelming lacking flavor, mostly tasted like mint and over use of garlic. The cucumbers were not crunchy enough, and the eggplant purée with bland. No table bread. The entrees were strange to say the least. Mine consisted of some fish that was substituted for the trout, it was little 6oz portion cooked well but bland and over a sad little bed of salad with absolutely zero flavor: $37. The chicken parm was enormous, I guess they lost my fish in the chicken? Got me. The chicken texture was awful, there was something stringy and not cooked right about it. The marina sauce was bland, and a small dollop of mozzarella cheese that was about 1oz was all the cheese in sight. It was more like a giant Aldi discount cut of chicken with Ragu dumped on top than any kind of authentic chicken Parmesan. All yours for, ready for it... $27. Oh what's that you want a tiny bowl of 8 pieces of penne pasta with some more bland sauce on the side? That will be $5. How's your $32 chicken parm? Shall we dump the hot chicken on top of some fresh greens so they can wilt? Sure why not. The cocktails were typical not bad or good, nothing special about the 4 my table had. The dessert was as best I can tell a pile of vanilla putting dumped into a bowl, and called "Butterscotch Budino" all yours for $11. The place has a great location, great decor, unbelievable good service, and overall great atmosphere. They just forget the excellent food. 1 star, 4 buckets of trash. Most the time I'd give a place a second chance, $175 bill for 2 later, I was disgusted I wasted my time with this pretentious Malvern slop shop restaurant. read more

Stopped in here for lunch and can't wait to go back! It's not a real big place, so having reservations is probably a good thing! We got a nice seat next to a window on King street. They offer a prix fixed menu or you can order off the menu, which is what we did. I went with the Rigatoni Amatriciana and it was simply delicious!! Nice portion size for lunch and it left me a little room to have the Butterscotch Budino for dessert, also delicious! Excellent service throughout. Six hungry and tired Californians were in town for some company meetings. At the end of the day, we were getting suggestions on the best dives to find a good Philly cheese steak sandwich. But the boss steps in and says, "I don't want you in some dive, we're going to Alba." And thank God, we all agreed it was one of the best meals we've ever had. We step first into the newly added bar, and the bartender offered samples of Montepulciano D'Abbruzo Doc, a young, medium bodied Italian wine which was great to sip and went well with food. I also sipped a sample of one of their beers on tap, a plum noir IPA. A great start to a great night. This is a relaxing, colorful, rustic, beautiful restaurant - perfect for a special night out. Everyone's blood pressure dropped slightly as if we were entering a country restaurant in northern Italy. Everything was first rate: the food, the service, the bar, the and the ambiance. Five yelp stars. This is definitely one of the most deliciously creative restaurants. They don't just have the usual chicken and beef - they also have quail, rabbit, and various seafood on the night we went. I love that the chefs use as much local farmer's market produce as possible. They use a wide variety of produce, such as fresh corn, grape tomatoes, broccoli raab, brussels sprouts, fingerling potatoes, and on and on. They don't just throw a piece of meat thrown into their visible bright and hot wood fire and quick cooked the veggies. No, the combinations are nothing short of genius. There are nightly specials. But first, the boss orders and shares the four item antipasto. These were an outstanding mix of flavors and textures to whet the appetite. The tuna deviled egg, and the pepperoni with heirloom tomatoes were my favorites. The one thing I hated was having to make a selection with such great choices. Thankfully, the boss ordered a bottle of the red wine we sipped earlier which helped narrow down the choices. So dramatic foodie me asked the very knowledgeable, efficient, and friendly waitress: "If you were to die tomorrow, and tonight was your last meal, which of your entrees would you choose?" After some probing questions, she helped me settle on the local favorite, slow cooked Berkshire pork with Elbrus sprouts and onions served on sweet white corn polenta. Definitely mind blowing and something you would never find in an Outback! By the way, it says something positive when a wait person (like ours) is there for eight years, since the opening of Alba. My co workers were more than happy to share their awesome plates. Two of them ordered that I sampled was the beef rib ravioli in reduction sauce. The pasta was perfect al dente, and the right thickness and delicately seasoned. Three ordered and I tasted the Hanger Steak Tagliata with arugula, parmigiano, and onion. It was perfectly cooked with an awesome taste, texture, and presentation. The boss had grilled quail which smelled and looked great. We oohed and ahhed every bite, and talking was limited because we were busy scarfing up the delicious food. The one item I can't eat is the rabbit. My brother raises chinchillas as pets, and the distinctive smell of the rabbit and my like of Bugs Bunny make it impossible to eat. We thought we were done, but the boss suggested dessert. We were all sated and very happy. Most of us said no to dessert. But my co worker Mary at the last minute said, "Will, let's order the Butterscotch Caramel Budino dessert!" We all shared it, and it was the richest, creamiest, and most perfect custard like dessert ever. We'll be talking about this meal and this night for a long time. The fare at Restaurant Alba reflects the Chef-owner's support of "Local and Sustainable" in an interesting seasonal menu that nods to the Mediterranean. Big bonus: it's BYOB and we can splurge on more exotic plates when the mood strikes :-) Restaurant Alba books up, so it's a good idea to call for reservations. Why has it taken me this long to write a review for Alba? Alba has been one of our favorites for years. The formal dining room is cozy and great for a fancier vibe. We love the bar area for coziness in the winter. And the back porch is perfect for summertime. I'm really particular about wine (plenty out there are overpriced cheap wine that gives me a headache) and Alba always has a great selection. My husband enjoys the beer selection. Meals are creatively designed with local ingredients. We often order the specials because they sound and taste so delicious! Lots of creativity with meats you wouldn't normally find other places. And dessert--if you've got room--is always wonderful! The staff is kind and helpful and professional and we're so glad Alba is still here after the COVID years. read more

What's intriguing about Alba is that they can take extremely inexpensive ingredients, cook them a bit more or differently, or in the case of the bar, name them something cool, and people will pay a bunch for it. A big bunch. With a restaurant where the tables are right on top of each other, that's an amazing thing! Thats not to say that they do not have dishes with more pricey center pieces, they do, but the vast majority are not those dishes. When it's got more expensive center pieces- the cut of meat, the fish, etc. you will pay big bucks for it. And still be less than two feet from the next table- not romantic, and not great for a social or business meeting. The wines by the glass are expensive for what they are, but most people aren't familiar with those wines. All in all, pay no attention to the man behind the curtain, or your companions. You can't hear them anyway. And enjoy how creative second and third tier ingredients can be. read more

I'm not from PA so I really wanted to try some new places around the Malvern area. Alba didn't disappoint! Not only is their food organic and locally grown but you can taste that it is! It's amazing! I had the lamb pasta and loved it! Also, the Alba cocktail was a great pairing. Although we had to wait about an hour to be seated the service Liliana provided was just amazing. Great knowledge service. Portions are smaller than average but it's with the assumption you are ordering all the courses as it's done in Italy. Party of 4 bill came to $200. Last spring my husband and I bid on -- and won -- a tasting menu dinner for six at Malvern's Restaurant Alba when we were at a fundraiser. We forgot about all about it and a few months ago realized that we were going to lose out on the dining experience if we didn't book a reservation within a year of winning the item, so we finally booked a reservation for last Friday night. Since we couldn't find two other couples who were available on such short notice, we brought our three boys. We didn't know how the kids would do with a limited tasting menu, so we asked the owners in advance if they would let us order off the main menu instead. They agreed, and I actually think they got a better deal because we spent less than the value of the tasting menu for six. I had never heard of Restaurant Alba and, in fact, was confused at first because I thought we had won the auction item for Aneu in Paoli. Glad I confirmed with my other the name and place of where we were meeting before heading out. When we arrived for our 6pm reservation, the place was already half full, and by the time we left an hour or so later, it was teeming with guests with quiet buzz. The crowd ran the age gamut, from mid-20s to retirees, and quite a few families with children. While it is a slightly upscale restaurant (with prices to match), jeans, t-shirts, jackets, and cocktail dresses were equally represented. Our waiter was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, and we took some of his recommendations. We couldn't decide which of the four varieties of Bruschette appetizers we wanted, so we ordered all of them. Good thing since each Bruschette is literally one slice of bread. Not your typical bruschetta topped with savory tomatoes, Alba offers four varieties, all of them delicious. The Applewood Smoked Bacon with Onion Butter was my boys' favorite, while mine was probably the Smashed Avocado with Spring Pea. Each Bruschette was barely large enough for us to cut into four so we could share, but they were four VERY small bites, definitely leaving us wishing there were more. I had asked our waiter what Alba is known for, or what patrons most typically enjoy, and he said their pastas, which are all made in-house, and their wood-grilled food. So, I had to try the Wood Grilled Spiedino of Quail and Pancetta small dish, which he warned me was quite filling. It was incredible, and a lovely marriage of savory quail with sweet creamed onions. Hubby had the healthier Roasted Beets with Local Chevre, and I have no idea what my boys ordered because I'm 45 and can't remember much anymore (or I didn't care because I was happy they found something on the menu they wanted to try). Alba offers their pastas in two sizes/prices to accommodate appetites (and wallets), so most of us ordered a large pasta for our entree, which isn't very large but is definitely filling. I ordered their Buccatini Amatriciana with Pork Belly in a tomato sauce, but I probably should have ordered what my husband had, which was the Potato Gnocci with Braised Goat because it was amazing and more interesting than mine. My 15-yo ordered the Garganelli (a pasta) with Spring Peas and Bacon, the 12-yo ordered the Grass-fed Hanger Steak with Wild Ramp Butter, and the 8-yo who eats only yellow foods ordered plain garganelli with butter. He gobbled it up in about four bites (and it was one of the best pastas with butter I've ever tasted). We didn't order dessert because we wanted to get home, but we will definitely return to Restaurant Alba, probably without the kids because it is pricey for a family of five for a regular outing. Since we had pre-paid for dinner by bidding on it at the auction, the waiter said we were all set and didn't have to pay anything. But we knew we needed to tip him, so we asked for the bill so we would could gauge the tip. Our whole meal, which included the food mentioned, soft drinks/lemonade for the kids, two glasses of wine for my husband, and two cosmos for me came to about $250 with tax but before tip. It was well worth it (and about what we pay for the five of us when we go to Estia) and I wish it were closer because it's one of the best restaurants in the area, and even the cosmo I ordered was made perfectly. (Tip: Bryn Mawr's Biga is owned by the same family.) read more

My only complaint was they only had 2 of the steaks and several in our party had to change their order. We ate pretty early, so I thought they should have had more. A group of 10 of my friends went on a busy Saturday night and had a delicious and delightful time. Whatever you do be sure to start with the antipasti, which last night had this amazing bruschetta made with goat cheese, applewood bacon, and with a surprise twist, Concord grape! It was unbelievably delicious. Our table had some of the pastas, from the rabbit to the wild boar ragu to the pork belly pasta, the later being the most preferred. I had the raved about suckling pig, which had a great blend is crispy skin and succulent meat. They definitely render the fat so the result is not heavy, although I missed a little of it. Served over bok choi with fingerling potatoes, it was delicious without being overwhelming. We ended dinner sharing a few orders of caramel budinos, a trifle of creamy goodness if ever there was some! With a wine list that has some great selections from the southern Italian region to a delightful, rustic interior and service that was attentive and helpful, Restaurant Alba is a delight! I would definitely recommend it for a party of two, ten or anything in between. read more

Every time I have been here has been excellent! The food is fresh, delicious, and the dishes are unique! It's Italian food but more of an upscale and farm to table seasonal type restaurant. I like how the menu changes to the season. It keeps the place fresh and exciting every time you go. The only downfall is the price but I do think the 3 course lunch menu is a steal! You get so much for a great price so I highly recommend that. They also have a wonderful wine selection. I've only been here during lunch. I will have to check out the dinner menu and crowd sometime soon. read more

A mixed review because this is a fine restaurant. A 7:30 reservation found us in the bar for about 15 minutes before our table was ready. No Problem. The bar is a cozy space and the bartender was attentive and made me a very good Manhattan. The "Oh My Gourd!" on the other hand was just a weird blend. To sour and butternut squash???? Our table was ready and we had a very nice view of the rest of the room. Frank was prompt and friendly. He knew the menu very well and was able to explain some of the finer points regarding preparation. Now here's where we lose some stars. We ordered two glasses of wine and Frank suggested since we were both having the same we should order a bottle. Good idea, right? Without the aid of the wine list we put our choice in Franks hands. The Di Majo Norante was good. Not great, but good. The problem was that Vivino, a wine guide app lists this wine at $9.99. My bill for the wine reflected the price at $54.99!!!! $55 dollars for a $10 (retail) bottle of wine!!! Dinner was very good and service was excellent throughout the evening. Great Job Frank!! It's been a few years since visiting Alba but glad I ever back. Great cocktails at the bar with a very friendly bartender. We shared the grilled octopus and the bucatini with Romano and herbs very fresh perfect texture. For dinner we shared the veal rolantini and the grilled trout. Both dishes were expertly prepared and tasty. Accompanied by a recommended bottle of Pinot noir ands some fresh bread. Delicious and still reasonably priced. Service was perfect and our server was new. Will look to get back soon. read more

Very nice for business lunch. Specializing in housemade pasta. Tried the sausage-stuffed fried olives and the 3 course prices fixed for $25. Prosciutto with pickled peaches awesome. Pork belly and favs beans with pasta for main. Chocolate polenta cake (gf) a bit bland but still good. Classy service over all but one of our deserts was forgotten and delivered significantly after the other and I thought this should have been comped but wasn't. Through out the restaurant I noticed the servers consistently were mixing up who had what and there was a lot of plate-passing going on. The decor was rustic and gave an authentic European feel. One of my pet peeves is not having a waste basket close to the restroom door so you can use a paper towel to on the handle upon leaving and that was the case here. I was visiting the Philly area for work, and was looking for an easy going casual dinner spot. I decided on the spot based on yelp reviews. We had a long travel day and didn't really want a long dinner, so we skipped the appetizers. My coworker got the grouper and a side of the mushroom - she really enjoyed it. I got the trout, it was the skinniest trout ever....but OH MAN the hazelnut brown butter was amazing, I could have licked the plate clean. I understand people have a bad day but he was intentionally trying to get rid of a table of 6 who would have paid way more than the 20% requirement for a party of 6 or more. Hadn't been there for several years. Last time I was there they were BYO, which is a long time ago. We were seated promptly and had a very good waitress who knew her way around the wine list, both red and white. Cauliflower lightly fried and served in a ragu was large and very tasty. The Burrata Bruchette was great with honey and roasted thyme. Wild Boar Bolognese was excellent as was the lamb with polenta. Have to keep going back after a very good dinner and service. read more

This time I brought in a work group for dinner and saw more of the same. Service was outstanding. Very attentive but not imposing. Food??? Again ridiculously small portions. Three of us ordered the pumpkin ravioli. Our waitress mentioned that it was "a bit on the smaller side for an entree". I should have listened. $17 for six mini ravioli?? While the taste was very good, they should be embarrased to serve that as an entree. No more. I will find another spot to enjoy a dinner and not feel hungry after. Five stars for service. A very nice find in up-and-coming Malvern. The 3 bruschetta's we devoured up front were creative and tasty. The sheep's milk ricotta, honey with sea salt was the best of the three we sampled. The sweet peppers, arugula and lardo was good, the lardo is weird if you never had it before...back fat, thin, mild taste, funky texture. The pecorino, zuchini and mint was very good. The rabbit agnollati was a small ravioli-type pasta filled with tender, flavorful rabbit, served in a thin, translucent rabbit broth (brodo) with parm...delightful. The pappardelle with wild boar ragu was a good looking dish of perfect al dente pappardelle pasta, but it needed some spark. A little extra grated cheese did help it out a bit. But dessert won the prize for the evening. A five star pistachio semifreddo was thick, rich with nuts and nut flavor. Oh my freakin dog, it was fabulous! Nicole and her co-server behind the bar, were helpful, pleasant, and professional. They just added to this 4 star evening. read more
