An authentic Mexican restaurant, with surprisingly large, tasty portions. The red (cheese) enchiladas were good, though the green (chicken) enchiladas were spicier. Neither had a fatty, oily aftertaste. The Pechuga de Pollo (Chicken Breast) was moist and tasty, too. The refried beans which come with most of the plates was some of the best I've tasted anywhere -- again, no fatty aftertaste. TIP: they bring you chips, 2 types of salsas, and a pickled carrot-onion-jalapeno mixture quickly after you sit down. The carrot mixture, though a bit spicy, can be mixed in to your food for an extra kick, or can be eaten straight from the bowl. A great neighborhood place. read more

Jerez has been my go to for awhile now, but I am seriously rethinking my choice. To start, they called asking if I was paying cash, as they couldn't find my payment via Delivery.com. I told them I'd paid via credit card as always. They argued for a couple of minutes, then said my food was on its way. Clearly it wasn't, as the food arrived late. And when it did arrive, the driver hauled butt upstairs to the neighbors, in spite of me telling him EXPLICITLY to wait downstairs. As expected with a late delivery, my burrito and tostada were ice cold. And, he hadn't bothered to keep the order secure in the bag, so my chips were all soggy from ending up on top of the guacamole. I hate when people review their delivery experience rather than the restaurant and I think Jerez's star rating has suffered because of that. (3.50 stars) This small "hole-in-the-wall" was Wednesday's lunchtime stop with my client, and was a nice surprise. While I generally enjoy Mexican food, the bastardized Tex-Mex pretenders are something that I try to avoid. This certainly wasn't a problem at Jerez. Brought a cup of complimentary Mexican chicken soup to start the meal, a hearty platter of beef burittos, yellow rice and refried beans soon followed. While I wouldn't swear to the fact that everything was made in-house, there wasn't anything which would lead me to believe otherwise. The mole sauce was mild, but flavorful; with a generous shake or two of hot sauce, it hit the spot. The burritos were very nicely proportioned between filling, casing, cheese and sauce, and were among the best I've had in recent years. I was particularly appreciative of the fact that the refried beans lacked the heavy and greasy characteristics of a packaged product. Service was friendly, if a bit hurried; excusable because the waitress/owner seemed to be working all of the tables. All told, inexpensive and definitely worthy of a try (or a return visit). read more

Nice place to indulge in some Mexican food. The place itself seems to have had a recent make-over from a few years back. It's not a complete overhaul, just a few additions of reproduced artwork and their menu posted over their walls which is a nice upgrade from their barren picnic checkered pattern table cloths they had back then. Another nice little treat, as a result of their change, is the addition of an appetizer. Along with your expected chips and salsa, they now serve you Frijoles Rancheros right before your dish comes out. As you sit, you are welcomed by a very friendly lady who brings you your menu and chips with salsa before asking you what you would like to drink. The chips are nicely sliced and appropriately seasoned with salt, which makes me think they may be store-bought. Their taste and texture allows me to overlook this speculation. On the table, a small bowl of green avocado based salsa, a small bowl of slices of jalapenos and carrots, and the small bowl with red salsa which goes very well with the aforementioned chips. It seems to have a hint of ketchup, but with the right amount of flavor and spiciness, it is a great match out of the three bowls for the chips that lay before you. The horchata is delicious and appears to be natural and not made from store bough instant powder as other restaurants tend to serve. As you indulge in your beverage and chips, a steaming hot bowl of frijoles rancheros is brought for you to enjoy. Although they are not the best they can potentially be when it comes to their seasoning, the frijoles are a nice touch that separates this place from other local restaurants. The taco dinner plate, although it may seem a generic plate, is a great menu item to choose as it allows you to sample up to three of their meats. Their carne asada is diced a bit too small, but its taste makes up for it as it doesn't require salt or seasoning when eaten on its own. The carne pastor is not as great as in other places, but considering only a few places are known for their carne pastor, they do an adequate job. It may be busy, but the lady that served you your food comes back and checks up on you a few times during your meal, ensuring you enjoy your food. read more

If I see mariachi's singing around the tables and people drinking gigantic margaritas, it's a sure sign they're using gimmicks to get people in the door cuz the food is mediocre at best. I'll stick to the basics, good tasting food, end of story. **Not a 5 star due to one of the waitresses that's there once in a while...must be a fill in when the regular waitress is off. A decent taqueria option in the neighborhood, and convenient if you're on your way to the nearby market or bank. I stuck to a simple order of carne asada tacos and a lengua taco. Tacos are the best way to gauge if a place is worth going back to. The carne asada tacos hit the spot. Just chopped steak, onion, and cilantro with green salsa on the side. My only complaint was that the steak was chopped too fine. The lengua tacos, on the other hand, were disappointing. They had the boiled and diced version. I prefer braised lengua, soft and shredded. Looks like I have to look elsewhere for that type of lengua. But they do have plenty more on the menu (check out their dinner specials), so it's definitely worth trying if you're in the area and need cheap eats. read more

So we ordered from this place because they delivered and they had good ratings. First off I googled them to find a menu and I thought they were pretty cheap so I called to place the order. We ordered the taco dinner chicken only sour cream and cheese (3 tacos rice and beans) $6 +.50 for sour cream and cheese 6 steak tacos everything +sour cream and cheese $1.35 per taco +.50 each taco for sour cream and cheese Steak nachos $3 +$1.60 for the steak which I thought wasn't bad 3 flautas no rice or beans $1.50 each So I call to place the order and she tells me it will be $42 I'm thinking the prices online are wrong and I checked 2 different menus. My fiancé says whatever I place the order she says 30 min perfect were starving 50 min later she calls and says what did you want on the 6 steak tacos?..... Everything +sour cream and cheese. I say yes but we we're suppose to of gotten the food 20 min ago she hangs up on me ....I'm not happy.Ok well now this is 20min over the time we we're suppose to have gotten the order. 20 min later we get our food. We pull everything out and we are missing steak tacos that she called to confirm and all our tacos have sour cream but no cheese which I was charged .25 for each and i got 8 tacos... So I call back to say the order is not completely correct and she knew exactly who I was and said no I sent them... We no I can assure you, you didn't. and she says they must be in the drivers car. AND SHE HANGS UP ON ME AGAIN ... So needless to say we didn't get the food we were missing and I'm out money. The service is never grand, in fact, I've had to chase down the waitress for water when we've been the only table in the joint but overall, they are friendly. Above average cheap taco place. Prices are low, the waitresses are nice, and it's reasonably kid-friendly. The coffee is definitely acceptable. The chicken items sometimes include more fat than I'd like, but whatever, I guess that's authentic, and I know I'm picky. The beans and rice are more than decent, and the service is quick-ish. Pretty much what you might expect looking at the place, plus a retro video-game. UPDATE: in addition the the video game, they now have a juke box with quite decent Mexican tunes, fairy lights make the place even a little more cozy, the staff is still as friendly and competent as ever: a solid choice for a decent comfort-food meal at a very affordable price. (and NO tricky pricing of ala-carte items, or any other kind of shenanigans.) Old-school Chicago taco joint style becomes more appealing to me as I age, I guess. Let me start off by saying that these tacos were the best that I had in a long time. I was eating here atleast once a week. Until one day my coworker and I came here for lunch and after already taking a bite of my taco I noticed something crawling on it. There was a white maggot looking bug slithering across my taco. We called the waitress lady over and told her and she has the nerve to say " oh yeah it's because of the lettuce. They are on the lettuce. Do you want me to give you new tacos without lettuce?" (In Spanish) I'm like are you kidding me? You know you have bugs and you're nonchalant about it? And you think we still want to eat here? We just left. I haven't gotten lettuce on a taco since.
