Update 6-25-26. I had lunch with my brother. Without my husband lol... We both wanted to eat their oyako don. It was good. The service was fast as we sat and talked stories. I thought they open at 11am but they open at 10:30. That's why my brother said where's the line not knowing they're inside already.

Terrible tonkatsu. Smelled "off", tasted worse.

Delicious Japanese spot in waikele shopping center. I grew up coming here with my family and it never misses. Nostalgic or not, their butter fish is one of the best on islands, with no extra charge! They offer sushi, surf and turf, udon, and teishoku combos just to scratch the surface. Amazing portions, friendly staff, this is somewhere you have to try out. The line does get long for dinner, especially weekends so plan accordingly.

Hungry for Japanese lunch - the restaurant was busy with a lunch rush but we got seated after 20 minutes! Seated - water & drinks served and order taken! Food came out quick with a bit of wait for the Oyakudon but it was served really hot! The AA combo was good but wish the shrimp tempura was served hot. It was still crispy and the selection of veggies good. I especially liked the tempura potatoes and eggplant. The butterfish was excellent and we enjoyed the salad that came w/ the combo. The Ouakudon was excellent- loved the meat and veggies and egg cooked to perfection. Overall a good lunch

This place was amazing. The food was great. And service was impeccable. Everything cost an arm, a leg and 2 toe nails. But portions were decent. Our friend took me and my husband out to lunch here for the first time. We each ordered our combo meals. Our friend ordered the deluxe sushi. Then he ordered 12 pieces of expensive sushi on the side for us to sample. After we ate everything in sight... oh, btw, I have a see-food diet. When I see food, I stop the diet. Anyway, when the bill finally came, our friend took care of it. He was happy to treat us and was so generous. He made sure we had enough to eat. We did. They had to roll me out of the restaurant because I gained 5 pounds right there in the restaurant in real time. Was kinda scary. I turned into the Asian pillsbury dough girl in real time. My husband turned into the pillsbury dough boy. By the time we decided to leave the restaurant, we were 2 happy bouncy marshmallows. When our friend went to the restroom, I took a peek of the bill. Drumroll please.... It was $200. Not including the fat tip that he left for the waitress. This was lunch. I told my husband and all he could say was "wow!" We were two very grateful, very full and very large people by the time we left the restaurant. If you're someone with money to burn, you gotta come here and eat til you sleep. Bring a pillow. Girl's Day luncheon with family. My meal was a step down from the great food experience I come to expect from Restaurant Kunio. Service was on the slower side. A few minutes after the water was brought out the server came back and said ,you no what you want? With no smile. The tempura was the talk of the table. It came out white with no crunch. One guest mentioned that shrimp was not cooked through. I also had the Ikura maki sushi. The serving board was wet, only under the ikura. The other pieces of maki was ok. will try again. Enjoy

When there is a lot of you, the party boat is a must have! It was fulfilling for my whole family. 2 adults, 4 children! Great service. Made sure we had everything we needed. As that our waters and tea were topped off when empty. Food was fresh and presentation great.

Took a friend here for a belated birthday lunch. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Comfortable atmosphere , prompt service and Ono food.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The three of us all chose the combo with Miso Butterfish and a different second choice. Went in at 1040AM and was seated immediately. There were about 4 other tables already seated. Our order was taken immediately and food came out very quickly. By the time our food came out, the whole restaurant was already filled :)). Everything tasted YUMMY. My only complaint was the hamchi/tobiko roll I ordered was only 5 pieces, LOL. But it was good.. I felt like I was ripped some pieces, hahaha..

The food is top notch here. The word is out as the lines are long even at 730 pm on a Monday. We decided the lines are wait was too long so we bought 2 gift cards. They sell gift cards in increments of $25 dollars. We asked for 2 with $100 on each. It was quick and painless and will use them in the future when the wait isn't over 30 minutes. I suggest you could spoil a friend or family member with a nice gift that they'll be grateful for. I guarantee it!

Great japanese restaurant in waikele! Waikele doesn't have many food options so Kunio is always a solid option for good japanese food. I haven't been in years because the wait is always pretty long since they don't take reservations, but we went on Sunday around 2pm and didn't have to wait long. We ordered the gyudon and chicken katsudon. The chicken katsudon was great and was super flavorful, especially the rice that soaked up all the sauce. The gyudon was ok, some of the meat was pretty tough and there wasn't really a sauce on it so the rice was pretty plain. The noodles on top were a nice touch though. Service was really fast and very attentive.

My favorite place to go..I love coming here,they're located at the waikele shopping center however they get really busy & they do not take reservations so i recommend you to come early & put your name on that list!!food is amazing & never dissapoints,my kids love to get the salmon box & udon,if you want a variety of things & there's 4 of yall or more then the kunio boat is the way to go!!it comes with a variety of sashimi,sushi,shrimp/vegetable tempura.Shrimp,chicken katsu,steak,& lobster..it's also serve with salad,miso soup,& 3 different sides.They have so much food options to choose from & the employees are very friendly!

Located in Waikele Shopping Center across the parking lot from Lowe's. In the same small lot where Baskin Robbin's, Genki and Subway are. They don't take ressies and the wait can get long. The menu offers hot and cold noodles, sushi, donburi and set lunches and combo's You can choose 2 items from 2 groups AB or just one group A or B. The price depends on the combo you choose. Everything comes with miso soup, appetizer and rice. The portions are big IMO and worth the $24-26 price. I chose the soft shell crab and mixed tempura combo (AB). The tempura was so good! Light and not overly greasy. There was shrimp, fish, sweet potato and other vegetable. I was full 3/4 of the meal so I didn't see what the other tempura was. The 2 small soft shell crab was juicy but maybe a little greasy- it wasn't a tempura battered. My other friends had the katsu ( tender and not dry) and scallop/miso butterfish combo. It was a pretty big piece of butterfish and was done just right- soft and tasty. It was lunch hour and the staff was pretty busy but we didn't have to wait too long. We did have to flag the servers down for refills on tea and water We all agreed that for what we got and the food was more reasonable than other comparable restaurants

Im so happy they re opened. I havent been here since the beginning of the year. I miss eating here. They have take out, but its not the same while dining in. They put up all plexiglass glass between the booths. They have hand sanitizer and wear masks as well. Like everywhere else, they have u fill out a small paper for contact tracing. They redid the menus, no pictures. Everything else is the same. read more

The customer service for some reason was extremely poor. I don't know if the waitress and hostess were just having a bad night or what but this was a bit shocking. Ordering about $200 in food and a decent regular both dine in and take out, the vibe and the food was definitely different. I am pretty sure our food was rushed because the plates looked as if they were just thrown in together. The Butterfish was also undercooked. The hostess was also very rude to remind that the pick up time and status of order. The utensils and side ginger that we requested was also not in the bag when we got home and we were unable to check our food there since we were rushed out to accommodate the next people waiting in line. I am sure it might just be an off night and its not typical of the food and service here. We will try again in a few months. read more

I'm glad they finally opened for dine in. Before they closed down for Covid there was always a wait. Well, no different even now. The wait can be even longer since the new rules is limiting capacity. We went right when they opened and still waited 20 min but food was worth the wait. Lots of people did take out so maybe that's the way to go until we get rid of this covid crap. read more

I'm a little saddened by my last experience. I just brought my mom for her birthday lunch and things have definitely changed. We were seated quickly and the busboy was quite attentive. Those are the two saving graces for this experience. Our server took our orders, delivered our meals once prepared and never came back. We were seated at a table that she constantly walked pass but not once did she inquire about our meal. She then showed up her last time to drop off the check. The food was just average and the service was subpar, at best. The only reason I didn't give two stars is the very attentive busboy. He constantly filled our water and hot tea without asking. Also, there was a fly constantly flying around our table, which didn't really improve the experience. read more

May I say that the restaurant menu has tremendously great choices of food to choose from it takes awhile to decide what to choose. It was our Valentine's luncheon drive to Waikele our second attempt they do not take reservations first come first service. Their servers and staff all are cordially friendly. I highly recommend to eat at their establishment which is worth the wait. We plan on driving from town to Waikele to eat again and again. read more

Came on a busy Friday. Tip: if wait is long, get the sushi bar seating if available which is what we did. Food was great (love my tonkatsu!) and service was on point despite it being a super busy Friday night. kudos to the workers! Well done. read more

Our server was Edison. He's is the BEST. Greatest experience we had dining there for our first time. Ask for Edison as your server. You won't regret it! We ordered, ribeye steak teisoku. Came in a sizzler platter over a bed of onions. I ask for medium rare but I think next time I'll order it rare since it cooked to medium well. The side dishes that came with it was our favorite. Seaweed with octopus, beansprouts and edamame. Miso soup and rice was also served. Another dish we ordered was tonkatsu teisoku. It was okay. The tonkatsu sauce was okay too. It wasn't anything different or special. They were out of Maguro toro that night. Possibly recommend going earlier than 7. We got seated closer to 8. Vegetable tempura was my favorite. We also had uni nigiri. (A set). It was a little more on the creamier side. Did not really care for it. Overall experience was great! It was more towards the employees working there. Will be going back to try different things. I know they were out of their handmade noodles for sukiyaki, that will be my next dish to try! read more

Seating is the problem just now waiting for 45 minutes, the hostess asked is it okay if you have the back to back to seat/ table my husband said yes, later we heard the hostess calling out names to seat in ,after called more people after us. No apologies whatsoever!! read more

Good, casual place if you want Japanese food in Waikele. Because it's located at the Waikele Premium Outlets, parking is often difficult to find. Often times when we come here, there is a line. Be sure to put your name on the sign in list which is near the register. I ordered their combo AA: miso butterfish and ahi tempura. The food is good. The miso butterfish is tender and the ahi tempura, which also comes with vegetable tempura, stays nice, crispy and fresh! I've gone here a couple of times but this review is on my last visit. I went here for a friend's birthday and got to sit in the semi private room. Since our party was large we had to sit on two tables. My table decided to get the funamori party boat. There is a minimum of a 4 person order to get the funamori boat and is $31.95 per person. It is served with an appetizer, miso soup, salad, tsukemono and rice. The boat consists of lobster tails, shrimp tempura, vegetable tempura, teriyaki ribeye steak, chicken katsu, pork tonkatsu, sushi and sashimi. I liked that there was a variety of choices but we ended up eating all of it and I still didn't really feel full. Service was okay and the restaurant is always crowded so try to make a reservation in advance. read more

Kunio's is a place we've gone to and always enjoyed the food. This past time we did takeout as normal and just after my husband took a bite, out crawls a live roach from his Chirashi bowl!! Extremely disappointed and honestly just hope the staff will do a thorough inspection after this incident. read more

Restaurant Kunio, at Waikele just reopened their doors last week. They have renovated their restaurant and are currently taking "to go" orders. We heard about their reopening and stopped by yesterday. We ordered their Combo dinner meal that included miso soup, toss green salad, an artificial crab salad and two main selections. Our selections were shrimp tempura and miso butterfish. We also ordered maki sushi rolls....hamachi/avocado and their spider roll. The food was so delicious and plentiful. We were glad that they are again opened. Restaurant Kunio is one of our favorite local Japanese restaurants on this island. Check them out and make an order. You won't be disappointed. read more

Food was really good, the sushi wasn't the best . I wouldn't buy it again. I still think Kurukuru has better sushi. The combo was really good the mixed tempura was really delicious. The shrimp tempura is huge I would order the shrimp tempura by itself that's must order . The keiki menu was really worth the price 10.95 and it includes ice cream. The sukiyaki was okay , the only thing is the soup was so salty. I am not sure if it's supposed to taste salty. The restaurant ran out of udon so they had to use soba noodles. Overall, customer service was okay. That's why I gave it a 3 . I would want to try the boat. read more

This establishment should post when their sushi chefs take a 2 hour break! We showed up at 3:45 pm hoping to get in only to find out they were not serving until 5 pm. The hostess was so incredibly rude and pompous, won't be coming back even thought it was highly recommended by my coworker! read more

This place was delicious the shrimp temp was amazing it was yummy yum yum. The butterfish her was cooked to perfection got the miso flavor and to be honest I didn't toast the flavor but it was still yummy yum yum. You need to get there when they open. Or it will be a very long wait. The boats dinners here looked amazing the table next to us for one. read more

Never ever return here. We waited for sushi to come very for a long time. One time sever explained and apologized us. Second time manager said We waiting for sushi just 50 minutes. OMG!!!! She looked like gloomy us. There were 2 sushi chefs in the kitchen. We left there before foods come out. read more

super crazy busy when i went (11am on a monday). i only saw (2) waitresses and both were running around, literally. i was greeted fairly quickly after i walked in, told the lady i wanted to order takeout and she handed me a menu. then it took a while for her to come back because they were so busy. after i ordered took almost 30min to get my food, which was sashimi teishoku all salad. nothing that really had to be cooked/prepared, just sliced and plated. surprised at what i got. when i ordered the sashimi teishoku i thought itd be more like just cuts of ahi/salmon and thats it, like what it looked like in the combination teishoku sets i saw on yelp. but when i opened it up it looked like a chirashi! ahi, salmon, hamachi, amaebi, etc. good assortment! food was good, but wait was long, which i guess is a good thing because then you know the place is legit since they have a lot of customers. ton of people waiting outside to dine in too. read more

We were there last week Tuesday (2/6) for lunch. We ordered two Tendon bowls and a katsudon. All three weren't very good. The tempura for the tendon was quite soggy. I thought this place was supposed to be good. Went to the restroom before we left and there was a foul odor mixed with the smell from the kitchen right outside the restroom (not inside). Don't know how the employees can work there with that sickening odor. Needless to say, I cannot go back there after this experience. read more

This place is the local sushi place in Waikele. There is always a line because they don't take reservations but it's never super long. And sitting at the bar definitely helps with getting inside. For being outside of town the quality of fish is good. Lot of people like the boat(for 4 people) or Teishoku's but I just love the sushi and sashimi. Only complaint I have when I go during the week(less busy) is they don't bring in uni Monday-Thursday, but I can't blame them for that. read more

Nestled in the Waikele Premium Outlet center in Waikele Oahu, Hawaii. They don't take reservations and wait it usually 30 to 40 minutes. We lucked out as we were offered a bar seat and we were able to be seated right away. Service is fast and friendly and food is delicious. We had to wait about 20 minutes to sit down. (2 of us) Chirashi was great. Very fresh. I was impressed!!! Unfortunately service was not so.... They gave our steak to the wrong customer. It took another 20 min. to get another one to us. We couldn't eat our dinner at the same time. After I was "done" with my chirashi the steak finally came. It was a little frustrating. read more

One of my favorite Japanese restaurants. Great selections, great teshoku's. Butterfish and tempura is good. Service is good. The only downfall is the parking and the long wait! Sometimes, the wait can be 45 minutes to an hour! It's well worth the wait to me. read more

This place is overrated. Brought my kids to eat here one day and their meals came before mine. They were done eating and i still waited for my meal.. we also ordered drinks which never came out. We got so sick and tired of waiting that I wanted to cancel my order. When it finally came out I lost my appetite. They gave me a refund for the drinks that never came. Great service and good quality for the price!! Best sushi I've had in a while. I loved my dragon roll out of all the sushi we ordered. Hubby had ahi roll and it was very fresh. Tempura was super light and crispy. Good spot for family too. Small inside and not to many tables but luckily we didn't have to wait for a table because we arrived before the dinner rush. read more

First time here. Got there around 5 p.m. on a Tuesday. No wait, but told the hostess said that there was no sashimi or sushi. Bummers. Service was super nice and prompt. Ordered the steak with lobster and the 2 choice combination with shoyu butterfish and shrimp tempura. It came with a very small amount of gobo, 3 edamame, seeweed, and miso soup. Not generous but dinner definitely was. The lobster was a good size, steamed, and sweetly paired with the butter. The steak came sizzling with a lemon and butter on top. Cooked perfectly. The mixed tempura consisted of carrot, eggplant, long bean, and shrimp. I was impressed with the size of these pieces. The fry was crispy but the sauce was a little bland. The butterfish was buttery good and melted in my mouth but the taste was just not quite there. Overall, I'd definitely come back. Want to try their sushi. read more

I haven't eaten here in over 10 years... mostly because there's often a long line that i'm not willing to wait in. But that's not necessarily a bad sign right. Well we are here tonight, and came a little later in the evening (after 8pm). Perfect timing as there were multiple tables clearing out. We were greeted with a warm smile, and seated right away. I ordered the combo (sashimi, tempura & ribeye steak). Came out pretty quick, and the portions were perfect. Towards the end when we were sipping on hot green tea, my mother tells me, "do you realize you were oohing and ahhhing throughout your entire meal!?" Haha!! No, I didn't realize that, but that's exactly what I was thinking! Everything was TASTY, TASTY, TASTY!!! I'm already thinking of when I'll return! It's a small place, but definitely worth the wait. I had the AB combo & selected teriyaki chicken with sasami. It was hard to choose from the many selections! Upon arrival around 11:00 AM, the restaurant was uncrowded, however, by 11:30 AM, the venue began to fill, necessitating a waitlist. We were promptly greeted and seated. The two- and three-choice meal options were appreciated. Our order included two two-choice meals: misoyaki butterfish with saba, and salmon with chicken katsu. Each meal came with miso soup and a small side dish featuring soybeans, seaweed, and a sweet component. The salmon was well-prepared and not overcooked. The miso butterfish portion was appropriate for a two-choice meal. The saba was well-cooked, although a slightly higher salt content would have been preferred. The chicken katsu was notably well-executed, maintaining moisture internally while achieving a crispy exterior. Overall, the food and service were of high quality. The restaurant was clean, and the tables were adequately spaced. Pros: The food, service, and overall experience were positive. Cons: A preference for increased salt on the salmon and saba. Bad bad customer service I've ever experienced, we were the first ones there yet the last ones to place an order. Steak arrived and it came with bigpieces of fat chunks it was disgusting I could not eat it. then my grandfather ordered chicken katsu and it was pink and still raw, I complained to the manager on duty and she stated she was sorry and would take care of it even asked us if we wanted a redo I said no. I gave her my card and she charged me in full, I was so upset she then said the owners would call me because there is nothing she can do on her end but yet she's the manager... makes no sense, my grandfather threw up at the fact of what he had bitten into and he has a sore stomach. The Korean waitress Sherri was terrible. Poor service, horrible food, and disgusting cleanliness. Sherri served green tea in a cup that had slime on the bottom of it. She said the tea was free anyway and just walked away. She and her male coworker just laughed about the situation. dangerous situation for older ones who eat there as well as for the young ones with lower resistance to uncleanliness like Kunio has. May I suggest Ganki sushi two stores down the pricce is right for the sushi you get. unlike Kunio over priced for the sub standard sushi you get. Top that off with disgusting things you may find on the bottom of your tea cup and lousy wait help like that Korean girl Sherri. read more

Kunio is my favorite restaurant on Oahu. Unlike your typical Japanese restaurant on the island like Gyotaku, Kunio seems more like something you would find in the Bay Area--modern and trendy (I mean that in a good way!). I would have to say their sukiyaki is probably the best I have ever had anywhere. The broth was sweet and tasty. (I poured some over my rice because it was that good.) I liked how there was an egg in it. It gave the soup more body. And there were plenty of meat and vegetables in it. My only complaint would be that it was very hot, and I wish it had shitaki mushrooms in it. One last thing--their sushi is terrific too. read more

Amazing! I love this place. We were so happy when they re-opened. Every bite is always so delicious. My favorite is the Ribeye, but i was so good, I didn't take a picture. lol. Customer service is quick. They were very attentive if we needed a refill or as soon as I started looking around, they asked if I needed anything. Just wish they had more seating, so there wasn't such a long wait everytime. lol. Or maybe if we were allowed to make reservations, that would be nice too. read more

They have no communication whatsoever Food is average at best Be prepared to wait long We had some people in our party not even get their meal when everyone was finished eating. Asked multiple staff where is the food? They gave 3 different answers. Other tables that came after all got their food. We had dinner last week for my aunts birthday. The food was good, the service was unacceptable. We ordered, shrimp tempura, some rolls of sushi, and lots of nigiri sushi, we asked if we could have it with no wasabi.
