Richard was our server the last two times and I walked in tonight saying I hope that's our server again. I barely had to explain my order from the last visit. Even remembered my shellfish allergy before I mentioned it.. Brooke our first server here checked in on us during our visit, I believe it was our servers break. My husband has ordered the same two rolls the last three time we have been here. I think he has enjoyed them every time to say the least. For the second time I picked an alternative change to a roll I cannot remember the name of! Oops. It technically has shrimp but since I am allergic they substitute spicy tuna for me or omit the shellfish ingredients. And it's so good!! I booked a business luncheon here and was glad they saw my note. The online system only allowed for reservation parties of four, and we had five guests, which was easily accommodated with the comment box at booking. The table was ready upon arrival. The restaurant was clean and had a few tables already seated, no wait, however, the parking lot was pretty jammed. All of us were able to find spaces after circling a handful of times for a noon lunch. The service was excellent. Attentive and very friendly. No stranger to Doraku in town and Waikiki, it was nice to see they had a leeward location, so I had an idea of what I wanted, and we started with appetizers. This place was highly recommended to us by my family. We needed somewhere to go for lunch. Not too far from the resort that we were staying at. I was excited to dine here, it looks like they get very busy. But the day we visited it wasn't too busy. The parking is a little scarce because it's located in a mini strip mall. We decided to get there right when it opened, the host at the front had asked us if we had a reservation. That 's when you know this place gets busy. We didn't, but they still accommodated us by seating us right away. There weren't too many patrons there...yet. We took a while to decide on what to eat. But our waitress was very nice and pointed out some recommendations. We ordered some beer, poke nachos and sashimi. The dishes we ordered were soo good! Literally tasted so fresh and buttery! I was really disappointed with my experience at this restaurant. Everything seemed fine until I noticed there was a fly floating in my drink. It's hard to enjoy a meal or trust the cleanliness of a place after something like that happens. I informed the staff, but the situation wasn't handled in a way that made me feel valued as a customer. I didn't even receive an apology. Skip town and come to Kapolei restaurant and you don't have to pay for parking. I like to come when they open up or if you don't have to go back to work I highly suggest happy hour where their prices are significantly lower. When I'm waiting for my next dish I find myself looking at the stuff in the bar area to the decorations on the ceiling. First tried the God of Fire roll which is a spicy tuna roll with cucumbers and topped with jalapeño. Very good and tasty roll. Then I tried the chicken karaage. The crispy chicken is marinated in a sweet chili soy sauce and it's good tasty, moist and juicy. Some of the best chicken karaage I've had in a while. Now let's get down to two my two favorite dishes. The Waygu beef fried rice which is prepared table side on a super hot skillet with steak, eggs, veggies, garlic butter and chili ponzu sauce. This fried rice was banging!! I couldn't ate the whole plate myself but of course I shared with the family lol. Didn't want to but did lol... This went perfectly with the Wagyu Ribeye which is a 10oz wagyu grilled to perfection with garlic ponzu sauce. The steak and rice combo was outta this world. I was so happy eating these two things. Definitely recommend them both. The last highlight was the Honey Toast which is a Japanese white bread stuffed with banana and topped with honey, chocolate and whipped cream. Love the ambience here! Very fun, Asian vibe. We came on a Thursday night around 9PM. We were greeted by the host and seated right away. Our server was friendly, helpful and attentive. The menu has a lot of options for sushi and cooked food. We ended up getting cocktails, chicken wings, chirashi, a salmon roll and wagyu sliders. Everything was delicious!!! The salmon roll was huge! They wont seat you until your whole party is there. Thought itd be more crowded for a thursday night at dinner time. But there were still a lot of open tables. Servers were busy though, seemed like they had large sections. So took awhile to get orders in. Food was pretty good. We had a wide assortment of dishes. The riceless cucumber wrapped one was our fave, we ended up ordering 2 of those. Wouldnt do the teri chicken again. Eggplant was good. Butterfish was good and came with a bunch of tsukemono. I liked that they let you do 1 of each flavor for the honey toast. What i dont like is that it isnt even cut up at all. Never had one that wasnt cut up on the inside. Made it difficult to share since you have all the ice cream on top but need to get to the uncut bread. I would recommend this place if youre craving variety and non-traditional sushi. Just as previously mentioned, we are big fans of Doraku and this location does not disappoint. In terms of crowds, it's a toss up so I recommend making a reservation even if you're planning on visiting last minute. The reservation process is all online and gives you the most up to date availability. It's fool proof. Our course this place can be pricey so we mainly come for happy hour if we can. Their menu has changed a bit over the years but a lot of our favorites are still available. The spicy ahi and salmon rolls are the perfect pupu to start. We also order the salmon carpaccio and otoro shooters every time we visit. It's a must. (Ask for Tabasco for the shooters if you like a little spice). The service itself we have enjoyed so far. Bartender, Chelsea, also makes our experience that much better if we're lucky enough to have her there when we visit... she is a big reason why we (& some of our friends) have become regulars. If you coming for a full meal, our favorites are the wagyu beef fried rice, wagyu ribeye, hamachi carpaccio. If you enjoy mules, must try the momo mule. Doraku's always a good spot to dine in when on the west side. I'm always down for sushi and a good lychee martini! Some of my favorites (may not be pictured) are the lobster tempura, eggplant miso, and of course a few nigiris. The service is A1 when Dustin's working, Ethan too! They're all nice and tentative! Love that the restaurant has tvs too, it's football season! A huge plus side to dining in? They have cushion for the seats!!! I honestly don't remember them having the cushion in the past so it's nice to have them now. The place is spacious and reminds me of the late night Izakayas in Japan, just bigger! Doraku restaurants are mostly consistent in service, ambiance, and taste so we enjoyed our date night experience. The Kapolei location does have more of a sports bar feel than the other locations though which can make it pretty loud. Maybe not the most romantic location but the private booths help. read more

I must admit, I did not have high hopes for Doraku Sushi Kapolei, simply based off their most recent reviews. With that said, I have dined at their town locations multiple times (and loved it), so I figured it would be just as good, or at least 3 stars. Hahaha!! And the verdict? --- YAY! 5 STARS!! :D At 3:30pm, my wife and I decided to try Doraku for an early Valentine's dinner. I was very pleased to have been able to make a 5:15pm reservation, so we could take advantage of Happy Hour (4-6pm). At 5:15, we arrived and the table was ready for us; there were only a few tables seated inside. It did take some time for a server to come over and greet us, but we were enjoying all the Asian decor in the meantime, and the beautiful ambiance which set the mood. Our server was great - very friendly and informative. We ordered our food somewhat family style, and we were happy to have them all hit the table fairly quickly. What we got: Otoro Shooter $6 & Oyster Shooter $6 - both served in the perfect ponzu sauce. I don't eat this, but I did take a sip to capture the flavor of their ponzu, and I must say, I wish I had one! The flavor was crisp, citrusy, and clean. Each of the wife's gulps ended with an eye roll and long exhaled "mmmmm!" Hahaha Agedashi Tofu $7 - Simple dish, can't go wrong! I loved the large blocks of tofu and the garnish of bonito. The tempura sauce was a traditional tasting dashi base, slightly salty, but pretty much exactly what you'd expect if you've had this at a Japanese restaurant. Jumpin' Shrimp $10 - Crispy, lightly battered savory shrimp. Really great value for happy hour. The tempura fried shrimp was served with a spicy mayo dipping sauce which I loved.. this was so simple, but in my opinion, it was perfectly executed & I love when seafood is served with a lemon wedge! Ultimate Spicy Tuna Roll $19 - DELICIOUS!! This roll had been on my radar for quite some time. I'm so happy it was better than I expected! I'm even surprised that my wife had a couple pieces and said it was yummy. Shrimp tempura, unagi, spicy tuna, tobiko & avocado... how can you go wrong? Shishito Peppers $7 - Another simple dish with minimal ingredients. Freshly charred shishito with shichimi & salt. Really good for those who like a spicy side dish - although these really don't pack much heat. This has been my wife's new favorite appetizer, so anywhere we see it, we must try it. Omakase 8 $68 - When I say this is an awesome value, I mean it. My wife is all about the adventurous sushi, and this "omakase" did not disappoint! We were impressed with the gorgeous preparation - it made it hard to devour... but she sure did! From the amaebi served with atama, to the negitoro and hotate with uni butter.... This meal had her melting in her seat! Haiiiyaaaah... lol! Overall, we had a great night out! We dined in fairly early, so while I can imagine the experience might vary during peak hours, our visit was definitely a hit. Having grown up in the restaurant industry, I understand that service and quality can sometimes be inconsistent, but fortunately for us, everything was spot on. I love Doraku's whiskey selection--the variety really stands out and makes it the perfect spot for sipping something a little special. The tableside fried rice is truly a highlight, bursting with flavor and made right in front of you--definitely worth the hype. I'm also a big fan of their purple potato fries, but they can be a bit too fried for my taste--they sometimes end up hollow inside. A slightly gentler fry would make them just right. read more

We came on Christmas Day, hoping to find some amazing sushi, but yelpers failed us on this one. This is average sushi at best. We tried a few things, so I'll break each one down. Started with garlic edamame and sweet and spicy edamame, hard pass. The garlic teriyaki was so overpowering, only one of my sons like the teriyaki edamame. The sweet and spicy edamame no one liked! It's so off-putting with the thick paste it's covered in, and the flavor is not good, waste of money. Spicy tuna crispy rice - it was not crispy, rather mushy and greasy - pass King oyster mushrooms lack flavor, so bland, again I would not order this. Crispy brussels sprouts- these were good, I like the addition of the peppers and pickled onions. Shoyu scallop and pork belly, scallops were decent, but the pork belly was soft and mushy, not a good preparation. Didn't love this dish. We got three rolls, and all of them were just okay, nothing special, small, very little fish, and way too much aioli. The only thing we all loved was the Butterfish, perfectly cooked and seasoned, it was so good. I was so disappointed eating here, we wasted a meal while in Oahu, and on Christmas! read more

Good vibes but mid food. The hamachi carpaccio and the rolls were very good, but the rest of the dishes were just okay. I wouldn't recommend the wagyu fried rice. Although they prepare it right in front of you and it's a cool concept, the flavor and quality just isn't there. There isn't much meat or flavor present in my opinion. The tempura fried rice is where I was extremely disappointed. It was probably 75% batter and 25% ice cream. First off great service. The waiter was very friendly and on the ball the whole time. The misoyaki butterfish was definitely one of the best things that i had there. The fish literally melted in your mouth. The otoro was also very good. My mom liked the agedashi tofu, the various nigiri sushi. She also loved the honey toast. Honestly that was pretty damn good. The one drawback, get ready to open up the pocket book because unless you are only ordering french fries, the tab is gonna hurt. But all in all, a good Japanese restaurant with quality food. We usually love coming to Doraku and have always had great experiences. Our server was very attentive to both my 2-year-old daughter and me, frequently checking in and making sure we had everything we needed. I ordered the wagyu fried rice, and while the first few bites were delicious, I unfortunately bit into something hard and sharp. It appeared to be a piece of bone or cartilage, possibly from the wagyu. I was shocked and immediately removed it and made sure my daughter didn't eat any of it. This could have been dangerous if swallowed. I let the staff know so it wouldn't happen to anyone else. The manager apologized, said he would inform the kitchen, and comped the fried rice. He also offered us ice cream, though we didn't end up receiving it, but I'm not one to fuss. I mainly wanted to give others a heads up to be cautious of bones when eating. read more

Given the amount and quality of the food / drinks I had here for a total of ~$60 (including the items my mom ordered), I'd say Doraku Sushi is worth it. Here's the food/drinks breakdown: Inaka Yakisoba: The pork belly was super tender and just the right amount of fat within it. I think the eggs had a little too much seasoning on it for my liking so I just mixed it in with the rest of the yakisoba. The yakisoba tasted more like garlic flavored noodles with pork belly on the side. I really liked how it tasted but I'm not sure how authentic this is. It's very filling and can be shared between two people along with another dish. Strawberry Sherbert Martini: One of my favorite drinks ever from any establishment. This drink was like alcoholic strawberry shortcake in a glass. It is on the stronger end (at least, to me it was) but I loved how fruity it and refreshing it tasted. The fried brownie: Has a nice crunch to softness ratio woth the brownie. I think this is something to try just once but I'd personally go for the fried ice cream next time. I can't imagine eating this one by myself after a full meal so definitely share this with someone. Even though my mom and I didn't have a reservation, we were easily seated at a table on a Saturday night. There were a good number of other customers inside but it didn't feel too packed.
