Today was a good day for having lunch with friends at my favorite Korean restaurant, Yakiniku Jang Su in the Pearl Kai strip mall! We got to Yakiniku Jang Su at about 1:00pm, it was pretty quiet so the 4 of us could fully enjoy the food and surroundings! We ordered Fish Jun, Big Bone Kal Bi, Man Doo, Soft Tofu Soup, and Butterfish Soup. As I am not a spicy food person I ordered the Man Doo and Big Bone Kal Bi. I use the House made GoKujang to live a little bit on the wild side!!! As usual I was able to add to the already tasty Kalbi, Man Doo, Fish Jun, and a few of the vegetable sides! My two friends who ordered the medium spiced soups enjoyed their soup! I Love the taste of the Big Bone Kal Bi and the Man Doo, however, I'm going to venture out to other items on the menu at our next lunch! Disappointing Customer Service We dined here for dinner tonight, and unfortunately, the customer service left a lot to be desired. When we asked for more banchan (side dishes), the waitress became noticeably rude. She grabbed the empty side-dish plates and stacked them aggressively, causing them to clank loudly. It came across as though she was irritated with us for asking for additional side dishes. Throughout our meal, none of the servers checked on us or refilled our water. For a restaurant with relatively high prices--many à la carte dishes are around $25-$40 for family-style dining--we expected much better service. The most uncomfortable part was when we paid our bill. The server asked whether the payment included a tip. We said yes, and she then asked, "No tip?" Later, while we were saying goodbye to friends at nearby tables, she asked again, loudly enough for everyone to hear, "Did you leave a tip?" Tipping is optional and should reflect the quality of service. Customers should never feel pressured or embarrassed about their decision to tip, especially in front of other guests. Unfortunately, the poor customer service really overshadowed our dining experience. Casual ambiance with booths. Banchan taste has changed over the years. I loved the taste of seaweed soup which was comforting in cool weather. Fish cake tasted bland, yet still edible. I didn't really enjoy other banchan. Don't expect refills. My husband received one free refill on kim chee. Price for banchan cost extra $6. Dol Sot Bap was served steaming, heat hot, mixed with beef, veggies, egg yolk, crunchy rice at the bottom. Yummy and reminiscent of the good old days! I've tried this spot twice now and we love coming here. I have ordered the beef kimchi soup it comes out piping hot and hubby loved the spicy pork. On Yelp, this restaurant was listed as having many vegetarian options. Keep in mind there are veg side dishes (banchan) but no main veg courses. We ordered the clam and vege soondupu. I liked it because it was flavorful but not too salty. We didn't have a fresh cracked egg in it though. Service was good. They were busy and getting ready to shut down. Ambiance is casual. A sick friend motivated me to pick up some Sam Gae Tang. Reading the review "best Korean food in Hawaii" I decided to go out of my way to try Yakiniku Jang Su's. I did a take out order. Opening the tray--My friend and I were surprised by the small portions of ban chan. The taste was as expected, except I found the cucumber kim chee to be a bit mild for my taste. I like mine more vinegary and sweet. Even the portion for the soups was smaller than I'm used to. The Yook Gae Jang was tasty and not a single drop was left. I am ignorant in regards to eating Sam Gae Tang. My friend and I were surprised to see a whole hen. My friend--finished up the soup. The ginseng was a two inch x 1/4 inch slice. I was surprised to see the hen stuffed with whole garlic, rice and a jujube (see the photo). Visit Maangchi's YouTube episode on Sam Gae Tang prep to see how it's prepared and eaten. I should have educated myself first. The restaurant includes a little container of salt to dip the pieces of chicken. Finally got to try this Korean restaurant located in the Pearl Kai shopping center across from Pearlridge. About 1 month ago I picked up a customer on Uber and apparently I dropped him of at this Korean restaurant he told me that he's a cook there . So finally I had lunch there they also sell plate lunches as well as yakiniku style . I had their spicy squid but I requested not spicy so it was more on the mild side it was good lots of squid . My wife had their sizzling spicy pork it was very tender on a bed of sautéed onion on a sizzling platter. This place is very busy I'm not sure because it was lunch hour or on a Sunday . Service is terrible. The Korean lady at the restaurant said the empty tables were all reserved. She pointed my husband and I to a corner table, which was so tight with no leg room. The table is totally not suitable for patrons to sit and enjoy their meals. There were 3 empty tables which were for 4 or more people. Only 1 table with reserved sign. It wasn't until my Auntie recommended we meet halfway for some Korean food that I brought myself out here. She chose Yakiniku Jang Su as our meeting place for a weekend dinner. I thought it was a good place as the service and food were efficient. I'll be traveling to Korea soon. So I needed to get my Korean food fix before getting the real deal! Overwhelmed by the menu, Yakiniku Jang Su is most known for their yakiniku or grilled items. Along that they also serve stews, pan-fried items, and fish dishes. Since it was a cold and rainy day, the soup was on my mind! I chose their Soon Tofu Chi Ke with mild spice--a soft tofu stew. My Auntie got the same thing with medium spice and her niece ordered their Chicken Katsu. The stew was good but nothing extraordinary. It came piping hot with various vegetables and a few clams and mussels. The soup had an umami flavor, the broth was thin, the toppings added color and texture, and the tofu was nicely soft and silken. My Auntie and I agreed that even with our spice levels of choice we wish it were a little hotter. We did appreciate the banchan they gave and ate it up (kimchi, cucumber kimchi, marinated bean sprouts, etc.). My meal left me full and I found it to be comforting on a cold night--price point was good for what I got but some items seemed to be a bit pricier. Our dishes came out relatively quickly but all staggered. The Korean ladies running the restaurant were quick and prompt. Throughout our night we weren't checked much on but our water was always refilled. The inside of the restaurant is on the smaller end with several booths and tables. Each booth has a grill in the middle to partake in yakiniku. This is a no-frills Korean restaurant that serves a variety of popular Korean dishes with decent service. Located inside the Pearl Kai Shopping Center, you can find Yakainiku Jang Su. The restaurant is situated next to a lot of other eateries. Parking is free and plentiful throughout the center's lot. 1-6-2021 We decided to have lunch at Pearl Kai(lots of eating options) after an appointment at Pali Momi. It's very close by. I wanted Gen but hubs(party pooper) thinks it's too much food/cost for lunch. I still believe that old adage, you get what you pay for... It was a toss up between Thai and Korean food as they were next to each other. I saw Chicken soup with ginseng on the menu posted on their window and got excited. Not many places have it on their menu. Hubs loves Korean food so it really was a no brained for choices that day. Luckily when we entered no one was eating in there so, quick, grab a table and order. A masked man looked at us and motioned any table. He gave us a menu with a contact tracing slip paper clipped to the menu. He did not take our temperature. The only visible woman took our order and 2 other parties that came after us. She scurried them back as they entered to take their temperatures. No smiling eyes or friendliness, just strictly business here. As we arrived first, our meals arrived quickly. First the water with straws, then the ban Chan and finally our entrees. Hub's plate came first then a while later my steaming hot, bubbling soup arrived. Remarking to hubs the chicken looked much darker than any other place, even in Insadong. There was no flavor to the chicken or soup. I added a couple sprinkles of the rock salt, but still blandness. For $20 I expected more taste and didn't see any ginseng. Usually you can see the whitish hairy like root but saw none at this restaurant. Shuckins... Their cucumber kim chee is crunchy and super delicious. We asked, may we have more kim chee? She promptly brought out more cabbage kim chee. Maybe our fault for not specifying cucumber. My favorite is usually the cut up fish cake but their way of preparing it, sorry pass. Paid for our meals and then left. For now, S's down the road next to Ben Franklin has legit ginseng chicken soup. Hubs also rated them a verbal 3 saying it was alright. read more
