Went in on a Saturday evening. It was super slow. Staff was ok. The place is very casual. Went in at 8pm. Food wise - it's all hype on social media. The fish quality is ok - not super good. The soft shell crab appetizer was a disappointment- the batter was so thick and was lacking salt. It was oily as well. I don't think I'll go back. Another thing - they turned of the lights at 8:30 at the dining area where there's 2 more tables eating. We were seated by the bar so we didn't get affected. Always a favorite, neighborhood sushi spot, Niko is expanding and remodeling, and this refresh is going to make a lot of people happy -- the busy place will have more room for its fans. I arrived for a late lunch, so there were plenty of spaces open at the sushi bar. I sat with Archie, who took excellent care of me throughout. Spicy Octopus Salad was the perfect appetizer: tender, chilled and packed with a pleasing balance of vinegar and spice. If you've never had this dish here, you've gotta give it a try. I followed up with their Dry Aged Toro, which they age in-house. As Archie promised, the dry-adding process made the flavor more intense, and married with their house-made sweet soy, this was an exceptional bite. I finished up with Spicy Tuna on Rice Cake, but with the addition of their secret Truffle Sauce. This was a far more complex and interesting truffle add than the usual dose of scented oil -- this was a fusion with citrus that gave an unexpected, very enjoyable acidic pop to the richness of the truffle. That trio with some iced tea was enough for lunch, but I'll be back again soon to enjoy more of what Archie and team are serving up. read more

Good sushi! I came here two weekends in a row. The first weekend was AMAZING!! Omg such good rolls!! Very cute restaurant and such a nice vibe after the new year. But the second weekend I came, omg horrible unfortunately. And I think it was because I got a new sushi chef that did nooooot make good rolls. He also did not understand at all what we were ordering and we were reading off the menu! Terrible chef. They have not compromised on quality AT ALL. The fish is incredible. The service is quick and attentive. I love sitting at the sushi bar where you can interact with the sushi chefs! Niko Sushi in Tarzana is one of those little hidden gems that proves you don't need a huge restaurant to have a good experience. The place is tiny basically a small circular sushi bar where everyone is gathered together around the center. I'd guess there might be room for about 25 people max, which gives it a cozy and friendly atmosphere.I ordered a California roll, and I was a little surprised that it didn't have the cucumber and carrot that I'm used to seeing in one. It was definitely different from what I expected, but it was still fresh and tasty.The most memorable thing we tried was an adorable pink sushi roll with cream cheese and a pink wrapping on the outside. Came here based off of their fabulous Yelp score! Service was great. Came right when they opened in the afternoon and it was super chill. I loved how they were blasting Olivia Dean. I ordered their hand roll lunch special, which comes with thee or four hand rolls, edamame, and miso soup. It was a nice amount of food for about 20 bucks! I think it's a pretty good deal. I was a little bummed that my hand rolls seemed to be a little more loosely wrapped than I'm used to. I absolutely loved the spicy scallop hand roll! We also got an appetizer that was tuna with spicy scallop on top and it was phenomenal. You can really taste how fresh the fish is! I ordered my usual Shishito pepper as an appetizer, and the style here is a little bit different than I'm used to, but I did enjoy it. There's a little to no sauce on them, but they have an excellent char which brought out a lot of the flavor. The miso soup was also very delicate and served perfectly hot but not burnt your tongue hot. Overall I found the sushi here to be very excellent! I would be excited to come back. Right as we were leaving I finished off my iced green tea and noticed there was a little bug in my drink. Not a total dealbreaker for me, but it was more so a buzz kill from such a wonderful meal. I thought I combed through the neighborhood sushi spots but I haven't tried this place yet so me and my son went here last Saturday night. The place is cozy and has a sushi bar pretty busy on a Saturday night. I loved the halibut and yellowtail, it was really fresh and soooo good. We had yakitori, salmon teriyaki and California roll in the 3 dinner combo. Nothing special with the salmon teriyaki but overall good value for the dinner combo. Their sushi prices are between $8-$12. My son's Niko roll was huge and tasty! He didn't go wrong with his order. We sat by the bar so service was pretty good and fast. I love sitting at Nikos bar, especially on a Monday night. I've been trying sushi restaurants along Ventura Blvd and I'm so glad to have found Niko. Their fish is very fresh and their sushi rice is great- creating the perfect sushi. We had their black snapper sushi, jumbo scallop sushi, bluefin toro (!) , no.4 roll and 6oysters. Lil secret- they do $1.25 oysters on Mondays right now and I'm stoked to go back and indulge in my love of oysters. They prepare it with lemon juice green onions masago and it's just the best- can't beat it. I loved the scallop and the black snapper so much we got a second round. The ambience, guests and owner Hoon are a lot of fun and personable. On Friday nights I heard they have a DJ and that it's a great time. Really disappointed in the service. Continually had to ask if we needed water or tea. The food was also really slow coming out. The worst part was that they seemed to be remodeling and the room next to us had bright fluorescent lights that they kept turning on and off. The portions on the miso soup, edamame and salad were also small in comparison to other spots. I ordered 3 salmon cucumber hand rolls but received a salmon avocado rolls. Very disappointed with my experience. I ordered dinner for my wife and I using Uber Eats. They pressed the, "it's ready" button triggering a driver to pick up. When he got there, they refused to give him the food or explain what's going on and told him he had to wait outside in the cold. It was an usually freezing winter night. He reached out to me to call them, and when I did, they told me that they hadn't even started making our food and that it would take 20 minutes. TL;DR: A humble and historied sushi establishment that has stood the test of time for a reason--quality fish, preparation, service, and ambiance at a price competitive to others in the valley. This will become a new go-to for my family (just don't get the anago). The Details: On a busy Sunday night when another restaurant's wait was an hour long for our whole family, we turned to Niko Sushi. Even though my family had lived in the valley for the entirety of my life, we hadn't visited nor even heard of this place before; what a gem we'd been missing out on. Compared to other, similar or higher caliber nigiri sushi / sashimi restaurants (i.e. not restaurants that specialize in cut rolls with fun or slightly cringy names) they don't seem to have as expansive or curious of an array of specialty fish. However, they still have some and most importantly they have the staples; we ordered quite a variety--blue fin tuna, yellowtail belly, salmon, kampachi, kurodai, jumbo scallop, uni, albacore belly, saba, and anago. Fish-wise I'll start with the bad--the anago was very overcooked and dry and sauced afterward rather than baked with the sauce; hopefully that was just a fluke. Moving on to the pretty good, the jumbo scallop was tasty, but the masago topping felt a bit random and didn't seem to add much to the taste. The saba was a little bit too vinegared for my liking, but vinegared saba prep definitely happens on a wide spectrum so not gonna dwell too much on that. Everything else though? Delicious--generous cuts, quality seafood, and savory and sensible preparations for the albacore belly, kurodai, and kampachi. Rice texture was a bit too soft and sticky, but the seasoning was fine, and when the fish and prep are quality, minor deviations in rice prep become much easier to overlook. This used to be a wonderful sushi spot, frequented by my in laws, so we ate there with them from time to time when we came to visit. It is now under new ownership, and boy have they changed. First off, they have no menu's to describe the contents of their specialty rolls. No pricing known upfront. You have to ask what's in each roll. I ordered the baked scallop roll and some salmon sushi, and I made clear that I have an allergy to avocado and the waitress wrote it down. I asked what was in the roll and she said there was no avocado, just spicy tuna or crab(I don't recall which) a mayonnaise sauce and the scallops. It arrived as a cut roll with each piece laying flat, the scallops on top covering what was inside. I ate most of the roll thinking the creamy center was the mayonnaise sauce. It was AVOCADO!! I immediately called the waitress over and her response was "oh sorry" then she left, and came back and said sorry again and that she'd told the chef. We asked for the check and when it arrived it still had the baked scallop roll on it. Someone in our party called the waitress over who said, well the card had already been charged. Like "sorry" but what should we do now? So then another lady came over and said she would refund the roll in cash. It didn't help me a bit and I was quite sick after. I know some people have life threatening allergies, mine makes me ill. Don't go here if you do you'll never truly know what's in their rolls as it's not listed, and apparently the chef doesn't realize he could kill someone. For me, I just get horribly sick. For others it could be anaphylactic shock. This restaurant is permanently off my list. They were barely concerned about what they'd done. I think they showed less concern than if someone just got a wrong order. This was serious. But she did say she told the chef. So I guess that was supposed to help me?? Their prices have also increased dramatically and you won't know much about that until you get the bill. $225 for a ruined dinner, and a night of pain and sickness. Thanks Niko's! We visited this restaurant for the first time today, hoping to enjoy some toro nigiri--but unfortunately, they were out. We tried to substitute with octopus nigiri, but that wasn't available either. In addition to the sushi, we ordered a chicken teriyaki bowl for our 1-year-old son, which never arrived. Since he ended up eating some of the chicken yakitori (which thankfully came midway through the meal), we decided to just take the teriyaki bowl to-go. Even after we paid the bill, we had to wait quite a while for it, and I eventually had to take my son outside because the wait was so long. The pacing of the meal really affected the experience. Orders came out very slowly, and we didn't feel full by the end. We were considering ordering more, but overheard the table next to us being told that a roll would take 20-25 minutes to arrive--so we decided not to bother. Had we known how long everything would take, we would have canceled the teriyaki bowl altogether. On the positive side, the sushi itself was good and the servers were very friendly. But unfortunately, the service and overall dining experience were frustrating and left us very unsatisfied. This was the first time we've ever left a restaurant feeling this disappointed. I hope they improve their kitchen timing and service. Overall, I wouldn't recommend dining here--especially if you're hungry or dining with kids. Be prepared to wait for a long time. read more

This is my GO TO sushi spot in the valley. I go here so much the staff greets me and my kids by name. The waitresses are so lovely they always take the best care of us. I always order the seared salmon nigiri, albacore belly with truffle oil is a must, scss roll on soy paper, the special roll, spicy scallop crispy rice and spicy salmon crispy rice. They have a lovely bottle of nigori thats like $11 which is such a steal for its size. We adore niko and the sushi chefs as well. Literally cant say one bad thing about this place.
