Found this amazing Salvadorian restaurant near us that I've never heard of. The inside was spacious and clean - very comfortable room. They brought us the menus and there were so many choices. We were there for breakfast and I chose the pupusa with tamale. I loved how there were so many flavors available - pork, fajita, spinach, cheese...and the dish itself was hot and delicious, even though it took a little time to get to us. I wasn't sure what to do with the soup/salsa and the slaw wasn't quite my style but not bad. The plantains has a lovely char to them and were hot. The pupusa was so tasty and not greasy. My son didn't like his pancakes too much (our fault for ordering) but loved trying my pupusa and tamale. Overall very impressed to have this clean, affordable and delicious restaurant near us and would love to get a to go order of different pupusa flavors to try them all. read more

I have ordered several times. I love this place. Too bad its so far away. I always get the chicken and cheese and beef and cheese. I usually pull my own black beans out the freezer. I did order theirs once it was decent. I just like alot of seasoning. No complaints about this place. The curtida is always fresh and plentiful. read more

We came in on a cold Sunday morning and so had the place almost to ourselves. It was very quiet. The tv was on but the volume was down. The service was quick and our server was professional, friendly and helpful. And the food was excellent. I had the desayuno guanaco and hubby had the desayuno loco. We would for sure order them both again, but we won't because we will try something else on our next visit. Excellent choice for breakfast. read more

It may look a little sketchy from the outside, but that's how you know the food is going to be bomb. I tried a few different pupusas: bean & cheese, jalapeño & cheese, and fajita & cheese. The bean & cheese was definitely my favorite. The others were good too, but the fajita was a little light on the meat. I love my pupusas drowning in salsa and loaded with curtido so I asked for extra of both. Prices are amazing here too. For 3 large pupusas and a soda it was only $8.50. You literally can't beat that! read more

Jeeeeze. As u can see I came hungry ! & left FULL AS A TICK. This place is a hidden gem, I felt like I was back in Central America the food was so AUTHENTIC fresh and delicious! The eggs were soooo yummy and the papusa was recommended by the server and didn't disappoint. Fajita, cheese and jalapeño papusa tht was out of this world. The prices were extremely reasonable and they were willing to accommodate without an up charge but even if they did charge it is well worth paying extra for this quality. I love authentic mom and pop restaurants like this so much. Everything was made to order and so fresh with the best customer service experience. Will definitely be back for breakfast as well as their non breakfast options :-) read more

Yall, this is my definition of a salvadoran restaurant. It's so good. Maybe it's bc the owners are from my region of Usulutan but it hit the spot. We got the seafood soup and the torogoz which had a bit of everything we love here. Everything was just amazing. Couldn't ask for more. Family ran, lovely staff. Ps. The carne asada plate with rice and refried beans and pico de gallo and a fiery hot grilled jalapeno, the plate came with two of the best tortillas i've ever had. I loved their pupusas. I had a revuelta and a queso con loroko. The pupusa revuelta was delicious, you can actually see the meat in it not like other places that mostly give you fat. The queso con loroko was delicious also. The lady at the front desk was very nice. She let me try the aguas frescas before choosing one. I would definitely recommend, there aren't many Salvadorian restaurants with outstanding Salvadorian taste. read more

What a gem of an accidental find! Restaurant Azucena is a very spacious and delicious family run business with menu items to appease both vegans & carnivores. It is very clean and lots of room between all the tables. Plenty of parking outside also. It is literally run by a grandfather, his kid, and her kids. I see them helping out (the teenagers have been my very competent servers and a 5-6year old has eaten next at a neighboring table while the mom & grandfather cook in the back). The main teenage server told me all about Bayo beans because I kept calling them black beans. The food is not only fresh and beautiful and tasty, but it is ridiculously cheap. Side salads are $2 and come with fresh cut avocado at no extra charge! That's un-heard of in this century. I ordered pupusas, salad, bayo beans, yucca and my check total was only $12.34. I made him triple check my bill and actually told the grandfather / owner he's the cheapest restaurant around. It is all homestyle cooking, he confirmed, and told me they take a lot of precautions to not mix allergic foods, daily cut veggies, make salsas/rice/beans. They even make a delicious version of curtido Not only did this food excite my taste buds but also delighted my spirit seeing such a happy bunch of family members all working together to create some thing special. This place is great. Fresh ingredients. Friendly staff. Great neighborhood restaurant that we found. The tacos, tortas, and papusas were excellent! I would have posted pics but forgot since it looked so good. Will post pics next time and try something new. Once you find what you like it's hard to change but I will try. read more

My wife and I are food & beverage service industry veterans with a working experience of 60 plus years combined. At least for us, coming from the industry, we endeavor to be as neutral as possible if we're going to review, good or bad, a restaurant. With that said..... here's our position of Restaurante Azucena on Belfort road; If your from Houston and the surrounding areas, one understands a typical drive from point A to point B. We live up north and went to Belfort for a part time bartending side gig, organizing our supplies, we were a an hour ahead of schedule and had time to eat a small dinner before the long evening ahead of us. On the way in I had noticed Azucena. With an hour free, and hungry, not knowing the area, we went direct there, thinking it was just another taqueria with the typical foods you find in most local taqueria's. My wife is from Puerto Rico and so we look at the menu and realize it's a Salvadoran Restaurant, we (or she rather lol) ordered the nuegados de yuca, chicharrone con queso, and we both had 2 each Tacos de carnitas ..... OMG DELICIOUS . What an absolute pleaseant surprise. Everything was made fresh, came out hot and their papusa dough was outstanding, clearly in house made. The taco tortillas were NOT STORE BOUGHT, and seemed more closer to the papusa dough itself but certainly nothing like a pre-bought 48 pack of your typical corn tortillas. Speaking with the owner (who came from the DC area of the US) learning Tacos are quite a favorite quick bite to eat here in Texas and likes them himself, tho not a normal Salvadoran dish decided to add them to his menu, but one of the biggest differences for us was the way he did he's carnitas. It was not, as said previously, the typical Mexican style, more like sautéed. Topped with a Pico rather than Cilantro & white onion (the taco it was served on tho )!!!! The chicharrone con queso was fabulously delicious, the filling was great, thinner than a pancake, crispy and served with a shredded cabbage salad with fresh sliced jalapeños (Nice Surprise ) all served with his style of salsas. So good, it's not even funny. Lastly, the yuca dish was more a dessert, with a homemade syrup that's obviously a Salvadoran local normal thing.......there was nothing about any part of the food we didn't enjoy, to the point where we asked to speak with the owner and obviously the chef and raved to him about it. This is where we asked many questions, asked for explanations and learned where he was from originally and the food style. At our work side gig, my wife and I discussed the experience all night. Even though it would take us and hour to drive and eat there (depending on the time of day) the drive is most certainly worth it. Well done Definitely worth returning, definitely worth the drive (for us)! The food coupled with their price points, I might add............ Fantastically Delicious!!!!!! La salsa de tomate sabe mucho a comino y el pan con pollo está muy sencillo faltan que le pongan un poco más vegetales. Las pupusas están más o menos pero el precio es mucho para una pupusas. read more
