There's even a security guard on site, which only adds to the impression that this place is fire. So when I happened to drive by on a 100-degree afternoon and found no line, I took it as a sign to finally give it a try. The small parking lot adjacent to the truck was nearly empty, except for a few other patrons who probably had the same idea. Ordering was simple and to the point. The menu keeps things straightforward: a selection of meats served as tacos or plates with a handful of sides. I ordered two barbacoa tacos with salsa verde. Less than two minutes after placing my order, they were in my hands. Fast service on a scorching day is always appreciated. With no seating available, I retreated to the comfort of my car to eat. Based on the amount of grease packed into these tacos, I would recommend doing the same. Eating them while standing could end with your shirt becoming an unintended side dish. One thing to note: don't count on a generous napkin supply. I realized after returning to my car that none were included. Consider keeping a few emergency fast-food napkins in your glove compartment. Those leftover Taco Bell napkins may finally fulfill their destiny. The barbacoa was flavorful, the salsa verde complemented it well, and overall, the tacos were overall tasty. Hands down my favorite taco place for over a decade or longer lol. If you need a late night spot they are open until after 2am I believe. I always get the fajita taco with queso (Yes like a quesadilla), the charro beans and the red salsa. They have the best meat, so not sure who their supplier is but regardless what time you go it's always fresh. I don't know who makes the Charro beans but they're absolutely my favorite in comparison to my mother-in-law. I know it looks funny in the container that they come in, but once you taste them that does not matter. You automatically get onions, cilantro and red or green salsa with your tacos. I finally got around to trying El Taconazo, which is a little bit north of downtown. This establishment is cash only and is usually always packed. I was able to find street parking and waited in a line that already had about 10 people at 11 pm on a weekday. I ordered a barbacoa and lengua taco and a fajita taco with cheese. I want to try their special plate where it's just a whole stack of meat and cheese and you get tortillas on the side, but I'm not big back enough to eat all of that by myself. The tacos are wrapped in foil and were piping hot. They gave me the cilantro, onions, and lime in a separate bag. Honestly I feel like the cheese doesn't add much to the taco. The fajita itself could've been more tender but it was aight. Barbacoa could've been more moist as well but it was still solid. I actually really liked the lengua the best. Decided to come here last minute and didn't know they didn't have flour tortillas. If I had known ahead of time, I probably wouldn't have come. As often as I've visited, I've missed leaving a review. But here it is now. Hands down my favorite taco truck at any time of day, but usually stop in after a night out when in the area. The parking is limited but there is a parking lot across the street where patrol is on duty every time I've visited. Simple, no fuss set up: cash only food truck, get cash ahead of time. Sometimes you walk up the line, other nights & especially weekends, there's a line wrapped around the corner. When you walk up, there's a menu on the truck with their offerings, there's quite a lot, but I am a simple man and stick to the fajita tacos on corn. The hickory smoked flavor is in every bite and that's what I really love about these tacos. You can eat the tacos without adding anything to them, they're always bursting with flavor and they put plenty of meat in the taco. I do like some garnish which they give you on the side consisting of cilantro, onion and lime and choice of green or red sauce. THAT IS ALL A TACO NEEDS! They tend to move pretty quick, but seems like forever especially when you're hungry and the smell is lingering in the air. The line moves fast tho. Prices were really cheap. It is cash only - so remember to bring some. I got three fajita tacos + the hibiscus lemonade. The flavor of everything was really great. The hibiscus lemonade was really good and earthy. I thought the meat had an excellent Smokey texture and was seasoned very well. The garnishes were fresh (although my lime didn't have mud juice)... When it comes to barbacoa, there is no taco truck I visit more often than El Taconazo. Despite the dime-a-dozen carts, food trucks, and streetside taquerias that are scattered throughout the city, very few do it as well as they do. They have become my gold standard for late night eats in Houston and feature some of the most tender taco meats in the Northside. After sunset, this place becomes destination for locals from all over the city. During their peak hours the lines can be long and the surrounding area is littered with cars just trying to make street parking work. During their busiest nights, they will have an armed parking guard who is either directing traffic or monitoring the area. The area gets somewhat shady at night, but that only adds to the charm for me. There is no seating. Most everyone is either getting out or eating it directly on the hood / trunks of their car. While the guys in the truck speak a decent amount of English, español is definitely the way to go. It's cash only and it's better to assume there is a line than not. I tend to park on the autoshop side while the majority will aim for the lot across the street. It's a tight squeeze with no less than a dozen potholes, so drive slow. The truck usually has no less than a dozen folks working all at the same time. While it may appear to be two separate trucks, the other one is really more o a prep kitchen and potentially where they prep the delicious meats throughout the night. They only have four meats: barbacoa, lengua, fajita, and trompo. All are quite good, but the Veracruz roots are definitely coming in handy. The barbacoa is tender, fatty, and full of flavor. I am usually dismissive of fajita meat, but their version is quite good. I usually purchase by the plato especial ($18), which comes with one's meat of choice covered by a nice helping of cheese. It's loaded with 7-8 tortillas most of the time and it's perfect for the amount of food. This is an experience for almost everyone. I appreciate that prices have been consistent, the service is quick (food takes almost no time), and the flavors are excellent. They're open till midnight on the weekdays and until 2:30am on the weekends. Have some cash as well as an appetite, and enjoy some of the best tacos in Houston. read more

I don't know what the hype is all about. Based on reviews, I ordered the fajita quesadillas & trompo tacos. The fajita was chopped into tiny pieces & cooked well. I just didn't experience anything flavor wise that would make me return even though it's less than 2 mi. from my house. I want a party in my mouth & to make involuntary noises of pleasure with every bite. I'm going to check out a place in Spring Branch soon to see if I'm expecting too much. That said, service was super fast. My order was ready before I was able to pay. I came after 1:00 & there wasn't a line. I can't imagine standing in a long line for this. Perhaps you need to come late night while partying to appreciate it more. For the money, I'd rather buy a lb. of HEB ready to eat brisket, butter tortillas & make my own at home. Finally got to try out this gem thanks to our lovely CM Jando's recommendation (And I got to see first hand how fluent his Spanish was: Let's just say it's somewhere in the level 5: Native/Bilingual Proficiency area if you're on LinkedIn, while by contrast I'm still at the Duolingo elementary popcorn vocabulary level..) Anyways I definitely see the hype about this place, delicious tacos/fast service/opens late/cheap.. Personally I always enjoy a simple menu where a place knows what they offer and do it with efficiency/friendly service. I enjoyed my barbacoa taco as recommended, seasoned well, a bit dry but delicious. Lengua I wasn't a particular fan but it's a popular pick. This was our go to spot ever since I can remember visiting my grandma's house down the street by the car wash. They have gone up on their prices and I was aware of that. A few words to describe El Taconazo: Iconic taco truck of Houston. When my friend told me he knew the best taco truck in Houston, I was skeptical. But he didn't have to convince me very hard to give it a try. Pulling up to the spot, I realize my friend is not the only one who thinks this is the best spot. Him and 20 others in the line that wraps around the corner think so too. Parking is tight during peak hours - limited street parking and ~10 spots in the lot across the street. However, people are coming and going often and there is an off duty police officer directing some of the traffic. If you cannot find a spot, look in the neighborhood or circle back. The exit to this place is on a one-way street so be ready to turn when you arrive. The menu is pretty simple. Tacos are served with 2 corn tortillas with your choice of meet, onions & cilantro, salsa, and green and red sauce. We ordered the fajita and barbacoa. The fajita meat is nice and smokey with a good amount of chew to tender ratio. It pairs well with the green sauce as it's lightness lets the meat shine through. Barbacoa is rich and tender - can't go wrong ordering it. The red sauce has some heat to it but won't make you begging for water. Each taco is loaded with a decent serving of meat and the toppings are on the side for you to add as you please. For $2.50 per taco, the value proposition is indeed proposing. For me, 4 tacos is more than enough to get me full. The line is long during peak hours and we waited about 15 minutes on a weekend night but probably less than 5 min on a Sunday afternoon. Line moves fast, however, and be ready to order before you get to the front. The employees speak enough English to get your order but Spanish is king here. Also don't forget CASH! Its a super casual truck and there's no seating or anything so be prepared to eat while standing or head somewhere else to eat. Ordering went by pretty quick and food also got prepped very fast. I tried all their meats in taco form so the babbacoa, fajitas, lengua, and... what I call al pastor. The tacos themselves are quite large and filled with lots of meat, so very good value. How can a Zedd concert get any better? Just add tacos. After a long week of traveling and eating profusely, we wound up at a Zedd concert with Jose L. Instead of our third floor GA, we got into the ground floor. After a night of crowd crushing entertainment, we left hungry. Jose threw out a few places, and having never been, this was the spot. ZERO disappointment in this decision. I had seen and heard there is always a line, and this evening was no different. But that line moved faster than a knife fight in a phone booth. No sooner had we walked up, and it was already order time. Cash only, and it goes a long way. It is a relatively short menu, but that's also the beauty of it. You are there for one reason, and you will love the food. It comes out quick, these folks are movers and shakers, quick on the delivery. The lengua taco was some of the best lengua I've had in Houston, succulent and the right amount of seasoning. The Plato especial is perfect for building your own tacos with the tortillas and putting on the salsas they provide which give the tacos a nice touch.
