I don't want to leave this review, but I think I should since it might help another patient. I had a PRP injection here in May 2020 for a chronic non-healing tear to the ligament (plantar plate) under one of my toe joints. After the PRP injection, my injury got worse and hardly recovered. 15 months later I still have less function than before the PRP, and struggle with basic tasks (e.g. shopping). It's been really difficult. I don't blame Dr. Manning or the team for this outcome. Overall I had a good experience here and would consider returning. Ultimately, I hold myself responsible, but I do think the rehab schedule RestorePDX gave me is partly to blame. I feel bad leaving this review but I think it's important to "close the loop" and also to let RestorePDX know the treatment failed in my case. I never scheduled a follow-up appointment after my treatment because of the cost. But I think there are some pearls here that could help other patients. 1. Think critically about whether the rehab schedule RestorePDX gives you is appropriate for your injury. I received a generic "foot/ankle" sheet with timelines that I assume are appropriate for e.g. plantar fasciitis or an ankle sprain but aggressive for a plantar plate tear. It would have been better if RestorePDX gave me no info, since I tried to follow their rehab plan-- even though I had doubts about it-- and ended up reinjuring myself after the PRP. 2. If you have an unusual injury (e.g. a plantar plate tear) see a specialist in that injury, even if you have to do telemedicine with someone outside of Portland (my case). I really wish I'd done this before my PRP since I think it would have changed the outcome. 3. If you are rehabbing a foot/ankle injury, get an iWalk knee crutch. Way better than regular crutches. Totally worth it. For a plantar plate tear, even a mild one, you should use a tall boot that goes all the way up your calf. I didn't have that, and that's on me. Last, I should mention that when I showed up on time for my PRP appointment, I discovered that the person who "scheduled" my appointment didn't actually put it in the calendar, so in their system, they gave the slot to someone else. Luckily they squeezed me in but I had to wait over an hour, even though I wasn't at fault. So yeah, possibly disorganized. Personally I didn't see the value of doing a prolotherapy dextrose/anesthetic trial injection in my case. Didn't tell us much and added cost for me. I was desperate and dead-set on trying PRP anyway, I figured it might not work but never considered that PRP could make my injury *worse*. Lesson learned: have a specialist with experience treating your injury look over the rehab plan and make sure it's okay. This was my fault and I still recommend RestorePDX to other patients, with qualifications. read more

I'm seeing Dr. Rachel Fischer for Functional Medicine. She's extremely good at what she does, five stars for Dr. Fischer. As other have noted: they don't return voice mail messages, and they don't use their own patient portal, so communicating with the practice can be very challenging and frustrating. I've spent over two weeks trying to get them to send me basic information that my doctor wants me to have, and so far, no can do. I've also been there for injections, and I cannot recommend them for injections. Their protocols around patient management and communication are seriously lacking, and they appear very casual around patients who are heavily medicated. Cascade Spine Center does a much better and more professional job of handling spinal injections. read more

I had an initial exam with Dr. Michaels where he reviewed my MRI scans and discussed the areas where I am experiencing pain and what potentially could be causing the pain. He also completed a physical exam of my spine. He was very thorough and did an excellent job describing my options. A week later, I returned for an SI joint injection. I was called back to the pre-procedure room on time. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The room is a little small and there isn't a lot of privacy between patients in this area. Again, Dr. Michaels asked if I had questions. He walked me through the steps of the procedure before we went back to the procedure room. It took less than 30 minutes to complete. I'm happy to say that I have zero pain now. I'm hoping this is a good sign that the injection was in the correct spot and I'll be on the road to a pain free low back. read more

Currently the verdict is still out. To this point, I have paid $2200 out of pocket to date for my consult and injection 3 weeks ago. However, I just received A bill for $250?? I work in the medical field and have called at least 2x to ask about why my pain was excruciating (after) the 1st week-which to be honest I was told would be bad so I expected that. No one calls me back. Like-no one and I feel badly cause I liked the provider, but now that I am reading some of these reviews (which I should have done my research beforehand). I do worry I made the wrong choice. I only have a partially torn rotator cuff injury and am unable to sleep or deal without constant pain currently. Sigh. Would be nice to have the doctor call me back and let me know Something. :( read more

What a shame that I find myself back here again, and only to find that my last review was somehow demoted to a point of disappearing! As if my troubles with this sorry excuse of a business weren't enough, I received a notice in the mail today that I'm being taken to collections for not paying my extremely confusing bill (for which I have called TWICE in the last month and left messages without ANY acknowledgement from RestorePDX). After detailing the difficulties I have gone through with this company in a previous post, I was responded to by the "business manager" who assured me I would be receiving a call to discuss my concerns. That was in MAY. It is now SEPTEMBER, and I have heard nothing! It really is unfortunate that the clinicians in this establishment, whose skill I do not doubt, put up with the terrible treatment of their clients by their office staff, and do not attempt to rectify matters themselves. I am a healthcare professional and an athlete who is very active in my community. I know a lot of people who are interested in regenerative medicine, and I will continue to direct any interested parties far, far away from this criminally unprofessional "business" until I am contacted directly by someone from RestorePDX. read more

I am an athletic 29 year old female who has been battling hip and back pain for years. I've seen many doctors and then took a year off because I got tired of getting the run around. My pain started coming back pretty severely this last year and I decided to heavily research doctors in the state... I ended up watching interviews with Doctor Michaels and read his research... he seemed incredible!! I already had hip XRays and MRIs showing clear positive labral tear and osteoarthritis but I wanted to learn about more conservative options before considering surgery. Dr Michaels rushes through our initial appointment and poked around my spine immediately saying he was certain that was the cause of pain. He ordered me 2 MRIs (1 pelvic and 1 lower lumbar). His office partners with some imaging company no one in the Portland medical field has heard of all the way out in Hillsboro. He promised me he would get to the bottom of this and was confident this was the issue. I had to take a day off of Work to get the MRIs and when I went for my follow up, he told me I had a disk bulge which was surely the cause of my pain. He rushed me through the appointment again and told me he wanted me to come back for a diagnostic injection in my hip to rule that out after I insisted I wanted to exhaust that potential cause of pain first... he hesitated as he really wanted to do the stem cell injection into my spine but finally agreed to the injection. His office failed to call me back for over 2 weeks to get it schedule and were never available when I called them. I finally got through and his medical assistant told me they got approval to inject my left hip... I let her know it was my right hip that was bothering me. She said she'd look into t and get back to me. She called back and left me a message saying she was ready to schedule a left hip injection. I called back again and asked for my chart notes... sure enough ALL their notes referred to the wrong hip. When I made her aware of this she didn't even apologize for the major mistake and said they'd correct it. They never looked at my imaging before referring me out to get new imaging and having me waste a total of over $3000.00. I ended up going to 2 extremely reputable medical facilities (respectfully keeping them confidential) in Portland and both surgeons told me the MRIs Dr Michaels had ordered me were totally unnecessary. I do not have a disc bulge and nothing was found on the pelvic MRI. I've since had 2 more opinions from the top orthopedic surgeons, one physical therapist, and one sports medicine doctor - all concluding I surely have a labral tear causing the pain. I am still postponing surgery and beginning to explore stem cell injections etc. but taking it slow. I'm very disappointed in the service I received at this office and bummed that this happened. I think Doctor Michaels May be incredibly smart and knowledgeable in his field. He has a contagious passion for medicine that shows when interacting with him and I think he could mean well but didn't take the time with me I deserved. I do not have a lot of money and I lost a lot because of his careless and quick decisions over my medical care. Getting the front desk staff to return a phone call is an exercise in futility. Messages left get lost in the ether. Not only that but they have lost my orthopedist's referral, not once but twice. To top it all off Restore has zero record of me ever being a patient there even though I was seen almost exactly a year ago. The person on the other end of the phone (the one time I've actually gotten through) gave some platitude that they'd had a computer system upgrade. Gee, a system upgrade that dumps patient records? That's really professional. When I was seen at Restore a year ago the physician's assistant found a torn tendon in my foot that a MRI was unable to detect. After verifying his findings with the radiologist on duty, I was on my merry, limping way. Not sure what has happened to Restore in the course of a year. Unfortunately, I may have to wait another month (not even kidding) just to get someone to call me back and get an answer to this riddle. read more

Recently I experienced a shoulder issue that required either surgery or stem cell injections to repair. I met with Dr. Michaels @ Restore PDX to discuss my issue, pain, and corrective options. Stem Cell Therapy was the best alternative to surgery, but Dr. Michaels suggested I also follow up with an orthopedic surgeon to gain a full understanding of the benefits/disadvantages to shoulder surgery. Due to other physical issues, the surgery would have been devastating to my mobility and even the orthopedic surgeon recommended Stem Cell Therapy over a surgical procedure. Despite the cost (not yet covered by insurance), I chose the Stem Cell Therapy @ Restore PDX and the outcome could not have been better. In comparison to surgery, the Stem Cell procedure was fast, had minimal pain, and the recovery was significantly shorter. I was given a referral for a shot in my right hip. I show up for my appointment where I thought I was getting a shot. It ended up being a check in with their doctor to see what he thought of my situation. OK- I get that. So, we have a long chat and he suggests that I feel like crap after months of PT because I've been misdiagnosed by 4 other doctors. The solution is a shot in my spine instead of my hip. I ask about getting the hip injection still- he says 1) not in this appointment and 2) the spinal one will solve the problem. I'm concerned about the spinal one for obvious reasons- no one else has said this to me and there's a "temporary loss of feeling in the legs" so someone else would need to drive me home. Also, he kept pushing his book on me. I call my primary care every day that week (Monday am appt here) and she doesn't get the info until Friday. She still thinks the hip shot is the way to go. I call Restore PDX back and they want to do the back one. So I ask for an MRI from both them and my primary care and get it Saturday (12 days after my initial appointment). I am very clear with RestorePDX that I need this done before the new year due to insurance. They say the doctor I saw isn't available the week between Christmas and NY, but another one is and pending my results, would be willing. I finally get the MRI results on Tuesday, call them and say that my back was fine and ask for the hip shot. Call again on Wednesday (2 different messages with his assistant and with booking). Call again on Thursday and finally get told that there was no way that they could have done the shot this week because "they're just so busy". So now I don't get to have one because they wouldn't give me one in the first place, freaked me out about something new, had me go do a fairly unfun and probably expensive procedure somewhere else to verify it, and then STILL wouldn't treat me. So, I don't even remotely recommend this place. Go somewhere else. read more

The staff here is very rude and unprofessional. I had already seen the doctor at a previous clinc and they had all my records but I was forced to make a new patient appointment anyways. The scheduling for new patient appointments is very limited and inflexible. Also when calling to try to schedule with them I called 4 different times and left messages each time with no call back. When I did reach office staff they were extremely rude and impatient. I have requested they send records to a new doctors office and have yet to receive those. Would not recommend this office. The doctor was wonderful at the previous clinic but the staff and schedule here make it not worth it. read more

I've seen both Jeff Grimm and Rahul Desai and was impressed with them both. Nurse Jeff has a strong functional medicine approach to care and is a whiz with IV therapies. And Dr. Desai was able to save me from having to get surgery for a sports injury that other orthopedists told me would never heal without surgery. (Apparently those other doctors didn't know about PRP!) I'm thrilled with the care I got there. Their front end could stand to be a little more "on it," but they just expanded into a big new space and have a lot of new staff they're training, so I think they'll catch up soon. Oh, and they take insurance! Definitely worth it. read more

An "ok" rating is a bit of a stretch but Rahul Desai keeps it from being lower. Though he was unable to provide long-term relief for my hip problem he did offer sound advice and alternative treatments that helped defer surgery a short while. My experience with Jeff Grimm was less favorable. The lab expenses were not clearly communicated (to put it mildly) and I can't say the recommended supplements helped ... maybe I didn't spend enough! My last treatment with RestorePDX was on 10/7/2015. I know the date well because it's printed on the bill I just received this weekend for services rendered. We thought our account with RestorePDX was clear having paid every bill they sent and receiving no statement (to the best of my recollection) in the interim. Makes me wonder when the next bill will arrive. read more

I saw Dr. Michaels for extreme pain in my neck that continued to worsen over the course of several weeks and was able to be accommodated for a same day appointment when I reached my peak pain level. He was patient, kind, very thorough in his physical exam, and very detailed in his explanation of my injury. He even pulled up images to help aid him in explaining why I was experiencing so much pain. With a short course of anti-inflammatories and some at-home exercises, I was back to being functional and pain-free in a matter of weeks. From the start this place felt like a pop-up shop. I was lied to about what to expect, told "Ohhh, you'll run again!" (didn't do a thing for my torn meniscus). Terrible communication, promises not kept. They didn't even know how to reach the main office or who was supposed to contact my health share. Each sent me to the other -- back and forth for a week. Turns out that time it was the head office who didn't know they were the ones who were supposed to call it in. ?! I was told there would be "a little stiff" for 3 days when I first enquired then when I signed up suddenly it was suddenly "drugs, braces, crutches...many days of severe pain." When I showed up for the appointment she didn't even confirm my name, didn't speak a word just pointed the temperature gun at my face and walked away from me. Requested to see the doc before I left to examine my other ankle -- didn't happen. Never saw him at all and I traveled 4 hours for the visit. My procedure had initially been denied because he left the part about being reinjured just months before out of his notes. No discussion of what they were going to do, review of the MRIs, or what they were doing. They just had at me. My worst nightmare. I felt like a med-school dummy. I tried to ask a question at one point and pointed to a part of my knee from 10 inches away and he nearly slapped my hand away and said, "HEY! Do you want to get it infected??!!!!" I was scared and wanted to talk about it and it was like "lay down and let us do what we do. You don't need to know anything..." I have an incredibly high tolerance for pain and both procedures *really* hurt. Almost too much. Their brace vendor showed up after two doses of drugs and left me with a brace that didn't fit on the off chance it might when the swelling went down (leg is bowed) It never worked and when I tried to return it after the swelling had reduced as much as it would (6 weeks later) they said no and tried to charge me twice what they said I would be charged ($900+). Said it isn't their policy to leave someone with a brace that doesn't look like it's going to fit but won't connect me with the guy who sold it to me and tried to bill my insurance instead of "looking into it" which is what they told me they were doing. Left me alone to sign papers while heavily medicated to the point where I wasn't allowed to go to the bathroom by myself. No assistance. I approached the office manager with all that I had experienced she was defensive and resentful. When I called for a phone number she had to get in a little jab. I told her I didn't appreciate the attitude and didn't deserve it after all I'd been trough and she got all wound up and said, 'We're going going to discuss that again!"... wouldn't give me the number for the brace vendor and hung up on me. I was asking because the number given to me by the office the day before was for a number that was out of service. The maturity level of this crew...at every turn. I'm not the kind of person who demands professionalism. I'm good with casual, but this was ridiculous. I'm transferring to the Medford branch, told them my story and that I was leaving the Beaverton branch and they said I was not the first person transferring from Beaverton with a story like that. I am filing a formal complaint with Regenexx and contacting my health share's referral branch to insure they don't refer anyone else to this branch. I encourage everyone who has had a similar experience to leave a review. People need to know. My goal was not to shame but to point out what needs to be examined and they were not in any way receptive....Some ligaments are a little better but in some ways (almost 4 months out) my knee is weaker than it was before the procedure. There were some gains the first few weeks then it fell apart again. I was prepared for that possibility but believed him when he said I would run again. Those success videos are best-case scenario. What I was not prepared for was the lack of integrity I encountered, the failure to discuss or explain or the lack of professionalism. It was like a bunch of middle-schoolers playing hospital. I was actually scared to show up -- at which point it just got worse. Lesson learned. Listen to your gut. Don't hope things will get better. read more

I saw Dr Desai over two years ago for hip bursitis that 2 other Drs treated with a steroid injection that only helped for a few weeks. He did a Platelet Rich Plasma injection and I am still pain free . I saw him again a few months ago and he diagnosed my back pain and again did a PRP injection of my Sacroiliac joint. I am now pain free again. I consider him to be my miracle worker!!! Unlike other docs who say 'what do you expect at your age" (I am 80), he listens, does a great exam, explains very carefully and gets the job done. I highly recommend him for diagnosing and treating pain. read more
