Nice small cafe in the Madison Centre building. The place is brightly lit and good to grab-and-go or to sit and chat. There isn't a lot of seating inside but you can walk into the building lobby and enjoy your coffee there. Good variety of coffee choices and some food options. Good coffee with unexpected service. I showed up on a Tuesday afternoon at 4:10pm and order a drip coffee. They close at 5, so the barista informed me that they did not have any drip coffee left. Perfectly understandable. I then asked for a pour over coffee and was promptly informed "Yeah, I'm not gonna make you a pour over coffee." A for honesty; F for customer service. Ordered an iced Thai+chai, which combines Thai iced tea and chai I think is a limited drink. After tax and tip paid about $7.50 for a 16oz, and it tasted just like, if not worse than a Thai tea I've made with concentrate from the grocery store for a fraction of the price. Did not have a good experience at all. I came in super excited for a new local coffee shop and after reading the reviews I figured I HAVE to try it! But this excitement was very short lived. There were three workers there when I came in and I was greeted nicely by one of them, who also recommended the spiced mocha for me. After ordering - I got an 8oz extra hot, no foam spiced mocha and their Moroccan turkey melt - I waited for a good 60 seconds just standing there for someone to take my payment. The girl who rang me up just stood there, not telling me when to pay or even how much my total was. It was really astounding to me. Once I paid (my total was $11.56 after tax), I went to the side to wait for my coffee. The girl who greeted me repeated my order to the third girl who was making the coffee and forgot to say "extra hot", so I spoke up and made sure that they knew I wanted it that way. Well, needless to say by my preface of not having a good experience, my coffee was neither foamless NOR extra hot. And as if that wasn't enough, they all (the workers) completely forgot about me as I stood there waiting for my sandwich. I literally stood there for a good 7-10 minutes just waiting for them to give me my turkey melt, because they had already put it in their heater when I ordered. When 4 more people who had ordered after me had received their drinks and left, I finally asked the girl who took my order about my sandwich and her reaction was not apologetic at all. She just said "oh" and went and got my sandwich and said a subtle "sorry about that" and went back about her business. As if that wasn't enough, when I got to work and opened my sandwich to eat, it got worse: 1) I found that it was BURNT 2) was missing one of the main ingredients, the sundried tomatoes, 3) the "caramelized" onions weren't caramelized at all, they just looked lightly sautéed, and 4) the ingredients were so minimal with barely any turkey slices or cheese at all. I feel like I should have just gone to Starbucks and bought one of their (slightly more expensive) sandwiches - at least I would have gotten what I paid for. I haven't been this disappointed with a cafe/coffee shop experience ever - the only reason I'm not giving a 1 star is because I noticed how nice and friendly the workers were to some people, so I know they have the capacity to go above and beyond (or even just meet expectations) if they want to, but sadly I didn't experience that. Yet another excellent coffee shop in downtown Seattle. Not that there is any shortage of excellent Java slingers, however, this was right next to my hotel. Stopped in for some morning Joe and was greeted by two smiling faces. The menu while expansive was not overwhelming. I asked about their drip coffee, and was given a very detailed response between the options. The barista was accurate in her description of the coffee. Dark roast, chocolatey, nutty, and smooth. I also ordered a lavender chai with oat milk for, the wife. Both were excellent. Try the Marionberry biscuit, it was both our favorite. read more

I came to Retro mid-week and was pleasantly surprised to beat the morning rush for coffee at 8:30am. (A decent line started forming shortly after I arrived). After climbing the steep hill, I could definitely use an iced beverage, so I ordered a 12 oz iced caramel latte. The caramel syrup was not too sweet and was more fragrant and flavorful than at other places. There's free wifi and a nice little seating area inside of Retro, but I had my heart set on exploring the adjacent lounge. Beware: the lounge is not open to the general public but is only accessible via keycard access for businesses within Madison Centre. Nevertheless, if you're lucky enough to get in, it is well worth the visit. The interior decorations and view of the Seattle Public Library are simply stunning. read more

It's located next to the Marriott Renaissance hotel and the business center, which has a beautiful lobby with a view of the library and a living wall. They have some local chai and gluten free options. However the coffee itself is not mind blowing. The presentation is pretty and it seems like a local "go to" for those who work close. I ended up ordering a dirty spice chai with coconut milk and it was over $7. This was quite possibly the most ridiculously priced coffee I've ever had. So for me it was a bit too pricy, especially considering one of the chai choices was Oregon chai. Average local coffee shop, still has friendly staff but the coffee taste didn't make me remember it or beg for more. 3 stars. This is still one of my favorite coffee shops to visit within the business vicinity in Seattle. Knocked down 2 stars from my previous review. I came in during a weekday morning. It was somewhat busy, I ordered my usual and I understand why the barista might have done what she did but it's unacceptable in my opinion. I took a sip of my drink and it was COLD. Mind you, I ordered a hot drink. The milk was not steamed properly. By that time, I didn't have enough time as I had to head back to work. I ended up "microwaving" it to heat it up. I understand if the barista did that to speed up the process. But I'm paying for a good cup of coffee. I ordered a hot drink and instead got a cold drink. You cannot expect the milk to reach a certain temperature after steaming for less than a minute. Not sure if I would go to Retro again. read more

I'm in the middle of a coffee crawl in Seattle, and stumbled across this gem. The atmosphere is great, the pour over was wonderful, but it was really the barista that made the experience for me. This coffee place is a good surprise! It is part of the Madison Center on 5th & Madison, across the street from the central library. Drinks - I tried the lavender chai and loved it. I agree with the other review that it's a little pricy. My 12oz chai with tip was over $6. (Great taste though) Space - the coffee shop looks new and clean. It's a small space but they manage to have 6 or 7 tables for two and a big table with benches for group. There is free WiFi. They constantly have customers, most of them do not stay so the place is not crowded. 2 or 3 people were working on their laptops. They seemed to enjoy the environment. read more

I came here on a business trip, right next to the Renaissance Seattle hotel. Great ambience and service. Breakfast sandwiches and wraps were really tasty. I recommend the lavender chai latte. Drinks were yummy too. The only complaint I have is that they don't fill the cups with the drink. There's a lot of space between the drink and the top of the cup. They also have a great selection of pastries, breakfast sandwiches, oatmeal and yogurt. We were staying at the Renaissance Seattle just around the corner and coffee was an important ritual for us before we headed into work. Retro Coffee sits at the base of a beautiful modern office building. Not only did they have coffee, but they had some breakfast foods there as well so it made for a good stop as we walked. I usually went with the nitro cold brew which they mostly have on tap but sometimes that wasn't working (tap is much better). They have a ton of other drinks as well of course and occasionally I'd switch it up and go for an espresso. Their breakfast sausage sandwich was great as well. Although not the healthiest thing around, it got me through our busy day. Have them heat it up in the back and pack it up for you to go. Don't forget your frequent purchase card. The customer service here is great and occasionally you can find yourself in a situation where there's a line. They are quick though and you never have to wait more than 5-6 minutes for your order. read more

Retro coffee was basically downstairs from the hotel I was staying at, so could not get much more convenient with the location! They open at 7 and just a few minutes past had a few people of a line- another good sign. Not an exorbitant amount of food options, so wouldn't go expecting breakfast, but for different am caffeine options plenty of choices! Biggest downside is there was only one barista trying to handle warming pastries, taking orders, being the cashier, and making the drinks, so there was a bit of a delay. New coffee spot in the area and strong out of the gates. It's located inside the 920 5th avenue building, and you can enter from the side off of Madison or you can enter through the front of the building and up the escalators from 5th avenue. I started with just a brewed coffee to test how well they do just the basic, and they pass the test with flying colors. Next is the spiced mocha with just a taste of chai and mocha and coffee. They also have pastries from Macrina bakery and sandwiches from Homegrown. They score love points from me for carrying local. The ambiance is magic with light airy space, art on the walls, and nice overhead music. It's a nice working space with plenty of outlets to plug in all of your numerous electronic devices, and they have a long picnic table for a small group get together or meeting. The staff is very friendly and answered my many questions. I can see Retro Coffee is going to eat up a big portion of my coffee budget. read more
