Finally, FINALLY got to try this "famous" fried chicken spot! I'd only had it on my to-eat list for, gosh, 6 months now? (Note: I moved to the Twin Cities 6 months ago.) My friends and I came here a quarter after 5 on a Saturday, thinking there'd be a 2 hour wait. I was surprised when they told us only 45 min to 1 hour - regardless, expect SOME wait, as the place isn't very spacious and it seems perpetually bustling. The good thing is that there's a bar right across the street where you can grab a drink while you wait in agony for that text. Once seated, we decided on a whole bird (among three people) - you can either choose southern fried or Texas hot (and we wimps decided to stay away from burning our mouths that day). We also got the mac and cheese and glazed carrots with pecans as sides. The food came out LIGHTNING FAST!!! No joke, it had to have been 7 minutes tops before they set out piping hot, fresh fried chicken and our side dishes in front of us! The breading on the chicken was excellent, and the mac and cheese was very creamy with a slightly baked top (could have used a crumble in my opinion, as I like more texture to my mac). The carrots were good, complemented very well by the pecans. It was the perfect amount of food for three people! While this admittedly isn't the best fried chicken I've ever had in my life, it was a great experience that I'd love to repeat! Oh, and their music selection is on point (think indie rock). Once again revival makes me happy! This time I tried the waffle sandwich with southern fried chicken. It was super filling. The waffle was soft and tasted perfect with the maple butter. Combined with the crispy chicken, white gravy, and sunny side up egg it was scrumptious. Even though it was really good it was quite rich and I think I prefer the normal chicken sandwich versus this one. The Mac and cheese is hot and super cheesy! One of my favorite things there. Sweet tea is perfect anytime of day. It's not too sweet and you get free refills. read more

The service is also great - our food came out with 10 mins and our server was pretty attentive. We ordered the spicy chicken and waffles, the breakfast sandwich, and the drop biscuits! YUM! This place definitely lives up to the hype! Easily the best fried chicken I've ever had, and the best fried chicken in Minneapolis. The Tennessee Hot made my nose run, but in a very good way! The cheddar drop biscuits are deliciously cheesy and have a lovely texture to them. Also, the mac and cheese is just oozing with sumptuous cheese, and tastes even better when reheated at home later as the cheese is given a chance to thicken up a bit. I love this place. You can never go wrong. They are still open and offering outdoor seating. We went on a Sunday mid day and had no issues with getting a table. The chicken sandwich is wonderful. They use thigh meat which makes it extra juicy. We also got mac and cheese and the cheddar grits. I would have to say out of everything the cheddar grits were my favorite, surprisingly. Twice a bummer. Service and food. I desperately wanted to like this place. It's in my neighborhood and smells SO GOOD. First time, I ordered GF food and they didn't tell me til AFTER it was served that they didn't have GF. I'm not sure why we had to sit 30 minutes waiting for food we couldn't eat. Employees were arguing with one another. One girl kept intervening on our waitress in demeaning ways (as if she didn't know the drink options). I just order from this place and I am extremely disappointed and still hungry. We ordered 2 orders of the chicken and waffles. One with the Tennessee hot sauce and one without, a chicken sandwich, and a two piece. That's a total of 9 pieces of chicken and we could only eat 4 pieces of chicken because the rest was raw in the middle. It's sad because the couple of bites I did have, before I realized it was undercooked, was really good. I would call and complain but I'm from out of town, they close in a couple of minutes, and I don't want anyone to do anything to my food because I complained. We've all seen the videos. The price is a little steep too for just chicken and no sides. It was 100.00 bucks for 9 pieces of chicken, a small side of mac and cheese, and two waffles. The mac and cheese is good. This was my first time at Revival Smoked Meats. I decide to try RSM on my way home from golf and get some ribs and a side to take home. The menu has a three rib plate for $16.50 which came with a couple of sides but I decided to get full rack with the idea that I would have some leftovers. The full rack was $36 and in my opinion, it's really a small rack compared to other BBQ joints. The side of slaw was maybe a cup in size and it was $6.50. I have to say I was disappointed. Revival is such an awesome restaurant and I feel like they are mailing it in on this one. The ribs were super fatty. They were cooked properly but only a few were ribs i the rack that you would call "good." I'll give it another chance but wow, this was a tough start. read more

This is definitely a must have when in town! The Mac and cheese is made to perfection with the a crunchy crust and super gooey cheese layer hiding below. The chickengiest fried chicken is a ghost pepper based chicken that is not to under estimate ! For me the portion sizes - a half of the chicken breast and I was stuffed to the max but that's also partly Bc I had Mac and cheese mash potatoes and a buttery seasoned biscuit. I also tried the eggplant which was well seasoned and tasty. Their pickles were okay, not something I would or would not recommend. Mmm! Wow wow wow. This place knows how to do fried chicken, among other Southern favorites. If you like fried chicken, you have to go to Revival. They specialize in whole fried chickens (we ordered 1) and Southern side dishes. I appreciate that they are conscious of their impact on the environment, as they were one of the first restaurants I had ever been to that offered paper straws. My only complaint would be the wait. The establishment is very small with limited space to wait, and unless you go during very off hours, you will wait. It is worth the wait, though. read more

Half way through dining outside, the pipe was leaking gas and we had to go inside which was fine, then light was having trouble indoors. And they charge mandatory tips. I'll start this off by saying I've uttered the words "nah, it wasn't good enough to try again," several times over the past few months regarding this small southern joint that most rave about. The hubby and I ordered take out early this fall and after waiting nearly an hour and a half for take out just to to get home and eat half cold chicken. The food was, admittedly, a bit lackluster- nothing stood out for either of us amidst the chicken, greens,macaroni, and corn bread we sampled. Fast forward to Quarantine 2020 where; if you're amongst those who tend to eat dinner a little later in to the evening, your options are quite scarce come 7:30 P.M. We found ourselves scrambling last minute as the few other places we were excited to check out stopped taking pick up orders at 7. We really had no other good options so we decided to take a chance...and we were so glad we did! Seriously this time around the food was off the charts! Everything was prepared perfectly! We read they were working hard to perfect their pick up system.. and it definitely shows compared to many other places here. They have a very safe and smooth system, and the order was ready exactly when they said it would be. We live down in Lakeville bordering Farmington and I was able to get the food home and it was still warm enough to eat straight out of the box. I had the friend green tomatoes and all white meat two piece. My husband opted for the Tennessee hot chicken, mustard slaw, and sampled a biscuit. The biscuit was good..nothing extraordinary... but good. Everything else was spectacular! The breading on the chicken was out of this world! Very crunchy and full of spice and flavor. Tupelo Honey down in Denver has been my #1 chicken spot in the US.. but man oh man, this may take the cake. The meat was succulent and so juicy, not soggy, or flavorless as I've had so many other times. I've never tried a fried green tomato until now, but this set the bar and my expectations sky high. The breading was very light, none of the tomato's flavor or texture were compromised in frying.. I cannot stress enough that so often fried foods end up as overcooked mush, and there is definitely an art to perfecting the texture. This is the good greasy.. if there ever was such a thing. I guarantee you'll be sucking the bones and your fingers when you pick up a piece of this chicken! We're excited to give it another go this coming week and see if we'll be blown away consistently. If you want the most photogenic, over-the-top, and memorable food in the twin cities, Revival's your place. They make southern cooking an art form here. From the fried chicken to the chicken + waffles breakfast sandwich to the mac 'n cheese, everything is picturesque and super indulgent. But if you want any semblance of balance, I'm afraid you'll find Revival a bit lacking. Was the food delicious? Yes. But it was also super heavy and left me feeling a bit sick for the rest of the day. Your mileage may vary, of course. Just don't come here if you're looking for fresher or lighter fare. Overall we enjoyed the atmosphere and the unique experience. I just don't think I'd want to come back, given that I can't justify the sheer artery-clogging unhealthiness of the food. read more

Revival is a unique, fun, and delicious local restaurant. The perfect place to have the honor of my 100th yelp review (yay!). I've been hearing about Revival for awhile and I'm so glad I finally made the stop. Service was fast and friendly. Our waitress was happy to answer all our questions and had plenty of recommendations for us. My husband and I tried the Revival Double Burger and the Chicken and Waffle Breakfast sandwich. Revival knows how to do fried chicken!! It was so crisp and juicy and you can even pick your level of spice. The breakfast sandwich was beautiful and just as equally tasty with wonderful combinations of sweet and salty flavors. The burger was also great and left me craving another one for dinner. Each entree came with a choice of a side from a long list of amazing southern themed bites. We had the hush puppies and cheddar biscuit and they did not disappoint. My only regret is not trying the Mac N Cheese which I awkwardly stared at and envied each time a neighboring table had a bowl of it placed on their table. Food: What I Like: +Chicken, even white meat, is cooked perfectly. Moist, not overdone. + Sides, particularly the mac, are very good - I may be in the minority here, but I wish there were one or two more additional spicy-ness levels. I find the "hot" chicken to be fairly mild. OVERALL: decent fried chicken, but once you've had it once that's probably all you need. FOOD: I ordered the chicken and waffles breakfast sandwich. I was so excited when I saw the description. Fried chicken, fluffy waffles, maple syrup, honey butter, gravy- and to top it all off a fried sunny side up egg. We had the option to add a side for $3 (worth it) and decide between a classic fried chicken or the Tennessee hot. I love heat so chose the Tennessee hot. Our waitress warned us that it's about a 6/10 on spice level but I was up for a challenge and 6 isn't too bad. When it appeared it was a massive sandwich! Right away I noticed there wasn't much gravy or syrup but that was no big deal. The Tennessee hot was no joke- it was tasty and spicy like I wanted but it was almost too spicy (the salty kind) that it took away from all the other flavors like the egg, gravy, and honey butter. After gulping down what felt like gallons of water it was easier to just take the sandwich apart and enjoy each piece separately rather than together. The Mac and cheese was tasty enough, nothing special but had breadcrumbs on top which was nice. My dad got the cheesy grits and after a couple bites noticed a hair in it (he's bald and I don't have blonde hair) so we sent that back. I had a taste before noticing the hair and it was very bland and the texture wasn't great- but grits can easily be hit or miss. SERVICE: the waitress comped my fathers meal after the hair incident which was nice but she didn't really check up on us often and it seemed like we would go 15-20 minutes without seeing her. ATMOSPHERE: small place where the tables are packed in there. Nothing special with decor. Looks like a hole in the wall place rather than somewhere that's typically raved about. PRICE: $13 for the sandwich (which was massive) and $3 for a side of Mac and cheese. Cheaper than expected but pretty on par for the quality. This is a tough review. On the one hand their fried chicken is darn good. Great crispy skin, lots of flavor, comes out screaming hot and the pieces are a good size. The price is also reasonable. The chicken and waffles comes with three pieces of chicken and two waffles for $14. Service is fast and friendly. So far so good, right? Here are where the stars are lost... the restaurant had a really off-putting smell. Bad to the point that my daughter was hiding her face in her shirt. I have no idea what it was from or if it is always there. Second is the lack of a kids menu. Okay... I am now officially a fan of Revival. This is my second time visiting. I went the first time maybe 1 year after they were open to avoid the long lines that wrapped around a city block. 5 years later, they still have a strong following and the lines have learned to just hang around the entry way or stand outside until they're seated. My party of 6 showed up for my girlfriends bday and we arrived around 5pm and were seated about 6pm. I full hour of waiting... some serious dedication. Ambiance: Small space, 1 unisex bathroom, small bar, and some how they have managed to put 1 million tables in this small room LOL. Most of their tables are for seating of 4 or less. i believe i saw two seats for 6, fyi. They have music playing from speakers above your head, most ppl are sipping wine and beer while they're waiting to be seated and ppl are happy. They came to eat chicken, why wouldn't they be? Service: Our server was awesome... super patient and calm and helpful. Even the lady that worked the bar was slangin' smiles all over the place. It was nice. Nobody's cranky, irritated, unhappy or dislikes their job. Everyone seemed cool. Food: We had wine from a local winery in St. Croix, which was nice. Their cheese curds were super good... crispy on theoutside, cheesy on the inside, with nice seasoning and something a lil spicy sprinkled for your tastebuds. Can we move on to my chicken and waffles though? Literally half of the table had it. You get one waffle, but you aren't advised that the one waffle is the size of two. Im giving Revival a 4 Star because I honestly had no complaints about the food or service but I will still critique the restaurant. Ambiance: First I visited in the dead of the summer so Patio seating was available. The patio is shaded with trees in the middle and edges of the courtyard. There was also an uncovered dish rack, which i found to be extremely misplaced because it was under some trees. Dirty much? I also found out they have no restroom open to the public and I ended up having to go across the street mid meal. The trash is also out side in that same area. Food: I was in the mood for Nashville hot chicken and its the reason I chose Revival so that is what I ordered along side collard greens, mac and cheese, and a roll. The greens were delicious and amazingly flavored with no meat. The mac and cheese was not my grandmothers and i would not praise it past being a descent side. The chicken was also served with traditional dill pickles. It comes in the option of 2 pieces mixed or 2 pieces of all white meat, half bird and whole bird with flavor options of Nashville hot, southern fried, poultrygeist or gluten friendly. I can only review the Nashville hot which was spicy but not at the level I have had from Hattie B's. It tasted like a copy cat but was still satisfying. Everything I had came out tepid in temperature and average in taste. The best fried chicken I've eaten in a long time!! This has been a bookmarked place for some time now so when we knew we were visiting the twin cities we had to visit this spot. Even though there was an hour and a half wait we still hung out to try this greatness. Since there was a wait we hung out across the street at a cozy coffe shop until they texted us our tables were ready. The place is small and cozy, there was about 20 table tops with a bar with 5 seats. The lighting is low and ambiance is really cool and calm where you can have good conversations with your party. My wife and I met a couple of friends who are local and ate here before. Since my friends were experts at this restaurant we let them order for us which happened to be most of the menu LOL. Appetizers was an order of chicken wings and Cheetos flavor pork rhines. The chicken was cooked perfectly juicy and dusted with a slightly spicy Cajun seasoning. The winner was the pork rhines, crunchy and Cheetos flavored but the kicker was the bomb sauce it came with....MMMM. For the entree we ordered the whole chicken (10pcs) regular and 4 pieces of the Tennessee hot flavored. We had mash and potatoes, Mac n cheese, collard greens and hush puppies for the sides. The regular chicken was my favorite, they know what they are doing. The breast was so juicy, crunchy and not greasy at all. After having a five-star experience at the St. Paul Revival this winter (a masterpiece of a meal I apparently never reviewed, shame on me), I brought a gaggle of friends to the original location. Between the two, I preferred St. Paul, but would still happily come to this location any time. My gent and I split a half southern fried chicken, hush puppies, mac & cheese, and mashed potatoes. The chicken, their specialty, was delicious as expected. The hush puppies were amazing and made up for the fact they don't have cornbread at this location. The mac was super cheesy and I went HAM on the mashed potatoes. The rest of our table seemed similarly pleased with their selections. Since they don't take reservations and we had a large party it did take awhile to get seated, even with us arriving around 5 PM. The restaurant was packed by the time we left around 7. But I just don't get the high level of accolades for Revival......the dining space is small so expect a long wait especially as the do not take reservations.......the tables are on top of each other. I'm from the south, so fried chicken is a big thing; this place wasn't that bad at all. The beer-battered cheese-curds were sweet. The white cheddar grits were killer. And the Tennessee hot fried chicken definitely had an ice kick to it, although it was somewhat bland, the sauce made up for it. Apparently this place always always has a wait, which we waited around 15-20 minutes -- not bad. There was a slight longer wait for our chicken to come out, but they made up for it by bringing us two smaller pieces of chicken in the meantime. We have never had compensation like that before and we tend to eat out a lot. But like I said, the service was great! Come early and expect to wait at this hot spot to be seated. Thankfully, in less than 30 min we were seated and ready to grub! The ambience is bright and cheery, but be prepared for a lot of noise. The server suggested 2 appetizers for our group of 4. I highly recommend getting those Johnny Cakes and Fried green tomatoes! The sweet cakes mixed with cheese and a runny egg were a tasty combination. Anytime I see green tomatoes, I'll order them, and these did not disappoint. Often they can turn out soggy or mushy, but no here. For the main course we got a whole bird for the table. It definitely seemed like too much food, but we killed it! We kept it simple with the southern fried chicken and it seemed to satisfy the table of 4 different palates. There was a decent amount of white breast meat and wings for those who enjoy those. As for a side, you cannot go wrong with your own side of the creamy mac-n-cheese! I had my own ramekin! While I we had no room for dessert, I noticed some homemade blueberry maple and banana pies at the table next to us. Presentation was nice, but I prefer mac-n-cheese over sweets! read more

This place has a great formula for success: Take no reservations. Cook good southern food that is hard to come by in the Great White North. Make the place small so that the tables are always full. Offer interesting and little heard of wines and microbrews to drink while you are waiting for your table. Price the food within reason while positioning yourself in a no frills storefront with free street parking. This creates huge demand, especially by hipster foodies that see the lineup at the door and the packed small dining area as a message: You don't know what we even have inside but you need to wait in line with everyone else to get a shot at trying it! The fried chicken is the star here and it comes in regular, spicy and "poultrygeist" which is chicken speak for "inf**ckingferno" as it is coated in a Ghost Pepper coating that encourages spontaneous combustion. I can do a fair amount of hot and I could barely finish 3 pieces because I thought I was going to have to call 911 for a wash down. Another key piece of advice here is that if you order the Poultrygeist style, you may want to consider avoiding touching yourself anywhere sensitive or you will pay for it. You will generally notice something akin to fire ants in your pants as you are coming out of the bathroom which then makes you think something is wrong. Funny in retrospect but not funny at the time! Other than that, the chicken is outstanding and is the biggest reason to visit here.
